Shaman King To Return In Shueishas Jump X Magazine

Shaman King will be getting a new short story in volume 5 of Japanese publisher Shueisha’s Jump X magazine.

The 44-page story will be handled by Shaman King author, Hiroyuki Takei, and will feature a previously unseen story about the protagonist, Yoh.

Manga News report that Jump X say the story is a lead up to a “big project,” which will be announced next spring. Volume 5 of Jump X will feature Shaman King on the cover and also come with a large poster.

What will this be about? Yoh Asakura centered or his son, Hana?

    • Solomon_Kano

“[...] and will feature a previously unseen story about the protagonist, Yoh.”

      According to the article, Yoh.

      • SeventhEvening

Thank god. The stories with Hana were pretty boring. All the “next generation” characters were carbon copies of their parents. Really didn’t offer anything new as far as I read.

  • http://www.facebook.com/norakisaragi Evan Waugh

I wonder if the big project is a new anime series? Because, IIRC, the manga goes way past where the anime ends. Lots of story left to tell.

    • kylehyde

Actually half of the anime is very different from the manga itself.

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Like Kyle said, it’s an anime-original ending

  • Solomon_Kano

    Awesome.

  • sandra10

I hope the announcement is about the continuation of Flowers or something. Takei’s non-Shaman King manga haven’t really hit any buttons for me.

On a side note, whatever happened to Ultimo? I really liked what I saw of that.

    • Aoshi00

Volume 7 just came out, I like Ultimo and his new art a lot. Only read the one volume of Yumbor and it was not bad. I’ve always liked the art of Watsuki and Takei. It’s monthly like Embalming, instead of weekly, so the serialization will take a while..

      • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Ultimo is great and I like his art too. I never realized that in English its just one volume behind JPN, they keep it close.

        • Aoshi00

I don’t follow Viz anymore, I guess they’re keeping a pretty close pace w/ most Jump manga right.. also this is a monthly serialization each tankoubon doesn’t come out in a long time so gives them plenty of time to translate too (instead of weekly, each volume comes out in ~2 months)..  His new art has a bit of Matsumoto Leiji vibe :).. very fluid and graceful, but also very fine lines.. cool to see how much his art has evolved since Shaman King..

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S2UKKIGGOA4V5EIFXAD7BQQOV4 Heehee

I suppose maybe it’s because Stan Lee is involved.

          • Aoshi00

It’s nice to see the man in kimono and still making cameos in all the marvel movies :)…  Takei and Stan Lee make a great combo.

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

            Stan Lee: ……What?

            ^^

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

            LOL Stan’s a great man.

I met him a few weeks ago in DragonCon. I managed to have him signed volume 1 of Ultimo and he said that it was the first one he signed all weekend, or ever for that matter. Some fans he has. xD

          • Aoshi00

Lucky you..  my sis saw Stan before too at some con but she said the line was too long so she didn’t get him to sign anything :(… definitely a good sport doing cameos in every new Marvel movie despite being at such old age.. always hilarious..

  • Somazu

I hope this “big project” is either a new manga(as ultimo was garbage), or a remake of the shaman king anime following the manga to the end.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002395146276 Peace Legacy

Seems like Takei Sensei can’t do anything right without Shaman King
Well, here’s to the hope of a new Shaman King (with the original generation cast)

  • Aoshi00

It’s pretty cool some of the classic anime are being revisited..  Like Shaman King or Kenshin.. I was just watching Seisou-hen on blu-ray and still couldn’t fight my tears even though it’s been 10 years *.* (can’t believe it was from 2001), so sad and moving… looking forward to the Kyoto-hen remake..  I became a fan of Paku Romi because of Tao Ren. The Shaman King anime was quite good.

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

      Don’t forget about Hunter X Hunter :D

      • Aoshi00

Definitely.. Well, HxH manga is not yet finished though unlike the others which ended long ago, I was hoping Chimera Ant would get animated once the manga gets far enough ahead.. it’s going to be epic.  I hope the animation quality would be more like the TV series and have Goto Takayuki (Pls Save My Earth/Baby & Me) as the char design, the Ryodan and GI OVAs’ animation quality were only so-so, Tagashira Shinobu (Ueki no Housoku) was the char design.. come to think of it, the new HxH series would be wide screen too, how time flies :)… would be nice to get Jinchuu TV someday.. I’ve been re-reading my old Kenshin manga lately.. the pages are all yellow now :(.. but it’s different for HxH because the manga is still running now.

        • http://zerodestinypro.blogspot.com/ Zero_Destiny

Well this isn’t being handled by Nippon Animation like the first series and OVA’s were. MadHouse is doing this remake. I’m not sure what to think. Madhouse has some great animation but some cheaper animation as well. Especially when they make kiddy shows like Beyblades. But I’m excited none the less. Even though I think I’m the only ones out of my friends who is. Then again I think I’m the only one out of them who hasn’t given up on the manga yet. They all stopped reading it. Couldn’t handle the hiatuses. I’m glad to see some other people who actually plan to watch the show.

I really don’t know about the new character designs. They look too, I don’t know kiddy. Gon’s hair is too big now too I think. But I guess it works well enough. It does remind me of the manga but I liked the better built less chibi designs of Nippon Animation’s anime better personally. The new voice cast seems okay but I Know it gonna take some time to get used to. Hopefully it shouldn’t bother me too much. From the little bits we have heard though I do like Megumi Han’s Gon voice. I wasn’t sure what to think since she’s a newbie but so far I actually find it fitting for him. But that said I don’t know if she can ever replace Junko Takeuchi. That’s quite some shoes to fill.

I really REALLY REALLY hope the anime can last a long time and cover the parts that Nippon Animation didn’t get around to but I have a sinking feeling that it may just be another 13 episode anime. I don’t know maybe I’m just paranoid. But I don’t see the anime going past like 52 or 64 episodes at the very most. I don’t know why but I just don’t think it will make it that far. Maybe I’m setting my standards a little too low and expecting the worse. I don’t know, man. I can’t think of any Madhouse anime going past the 50 or 60ish episode mark in the past 10 years. And all of those 50 episode animes were stuff like Beyblades and not their better animation quality shows. I guess there are some though The cat show er Chi I think is one of theirs but still I just got this gut feeling.

Also it may just be me but with all these new reboots they only serve to remind me of how much I miss good old cell animation days. The little we’ve seen of the new HunterxHunter is so bright! The colors are in your face but at the same time their also flushed out. It looks odd. And the little bit of the colors of the new art (and yes I’m being super nit-picky here and only going off of a picture I know) for the new Kenshin movies look the same. They look wrong and don’t hold up to the older coloring.

My biggest fear is the pacing. HunterxHunter has such great pacing. It’s willing to take it’s time and still be really fast when it comes to battles. The world is well thought out and the powers of everyone is explain very well and complexly and not just brushed off as not important information. I would be SO SAD if like a lot of the other new anime today that this new version of HunterxHunter ends up like the ADD show that has to do a whole arc in 13 episodes no matter what. And then gotta change opening and endings every 13 episodes. The pacing will be ruined. If it does that I’ll be heartbroken,

My sinking paranoia that the show won’t last too long aside and some minor gripes like having to get used to new character designs and actors I’m still really excited. Been reading about the new opening and ending songs. The bands seem like kinda on odd fit but I think they can pull it off. Just like the whole show I don’t know what to feel about the music but I’m hopeful. Although I already know no matter what they do for the opening it will never be as good as the second opening for Nippon Animation’s version. I love that song. The Sun also shines at Night or something it I’m remembering it’s translated name right. lol I did like the song in the PV. Hope the music will be like that.

yea, the Gen’ei Ryodan OP was very cool.

Wait, the new HxH anime won’t have the same seiyuu cast? are you kidding me!?  I was wondering if Killua would have the same voice, but Takeuchi Junko is still voicing Naruto.. why would they find a newbie to voice Gon?  It’s like having a different voice for Inuyasha or something, that’s awful.. never heard of this Han Megumi.. so like you said total rookie..

I don’t know about the studio, but I thought the reason why Chimera Ant arc waited so long to be animated was because to wait till the manga finishes, and now we’re almost at the final battle after so many years.. so far they have animated everything, the TV series, Ryodan, GI, never missing a thing.. I think they would just animate till the very end, otherwise they would’ve done it in OVA installments like Greed Island instead of a new TV series now.

New seiyuu replacing Takeuchi Junko for Gon, such a weird and bad decision, this is supposed to be a continuation, changing the cast is so unnecessary…  at least we don’t get to hear the new Kurapika or Leorio lol.. so they’re animating some old scenes for a quick recap or something in the preview clip?

The new anime design looks OK, need to see more.. but I really like it when Goto Takayuki was the char design for the first TV series.. his art style was tons better..

I can’t believe the series is starting like next week.. also this is airing Sunday morning too.. I hope they don’t tone down the violence too much..

          • http://zerodestinypro.blogspot.com/ Zero_Destiny

An all new cast for every single character. I guess Studio Madhouse is gonna do the show their way and just ignore that the original show existed. Kinda like how NAS’ Yu-GI-Oh anime has none of the same cast from Toei’s anime, and a totally different character designs that look like the manga much later on but not in the early past (Toei’s character designs matched the artstyle of the early parts of the manga instead of doing post art shift character designs for all of the show like NAS did with their anime) I guess. From what I know that is clips from the first episode. It’s a 100% overhaul restart of the story from Chapter 1. Like that new FMA anime.

            Source: [http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2011-08-01/2011-hunter-x-hunter-anime-to-retell-story-from-start]

And the first episode’s title is:
            Journey x And x Friends
            タビダチ×ト×ナカマタチ
Tabidachi x to x nakama tachi
            (Info taken from animenewsnetwork)

Pretty much hit the reset button on us.

Oh if you want to try to see this new cast and maybe get your head wrapped around it:

Those are the actors who are currently credited for their roles. Their all different from the original. :(

I remember them planning a Chimera Ant Arc OVA at one point but cancel it because of “Production Problems” or something. That’s what I heard at least. Anyways it looks like it’s just a matter that Nippon Animation has sat on their hands this whole time and now Madhouse Studios is gonna take a swing at it.

Oh if you’re curious about MadHouse here’s some info:
            [http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?p=11] and [http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=392]

There a pretty good company for the most part. They just got off of their Marvel Anime series this is the first non-comic book (well western comic book lol) anime in like a year. I just hope this won’t turn into an ADD show like a lot of other current animes are.

          • Aoshi00

Thanks for the info.. wow, that sucks.. had no idea they’re doing a reboot like FMA, I thought it was just a continuation picking up at where they left off from the OVAs, which is NGL and Chimera Ant since that’s over 10 volumes of new manga alrdy.. Before they always just animated whatever new stuffs after the manga got further ahead.. like after TV series ended in the middle of Ryodan, then 1st OVA picking up at Ryodan, then 2nd OVA being first part of Greed Island, and the 3rd OVA concluding GI…

The rest of the new cast doesn’t seem so bad.. I could imagine Fujiwara Keiji being suitable for Leorio.. and you have Sawashiro Miyuki as Kurapika, but Kaida Yuki’s was perfect.. I don’t know Ise Mariya, stuffs she voiced are fairly new.. and they have Han Keiko (Luna from Sailormoon, Athena from Saint Seiya) as Aunt Mito..and the new voice for Gon is totally new, from the trailer she sounds kinda similar to Takeuchi Junko..

Yea, Madhouse is okay I guess.. the Death Note anime’s animation quality was quite good..

Still this is very surprising for me being a reboot and having a new voice cast is a bit disappointing.. I didn’t really follow any news and just saw the blurb about a new TV series from the latest manga, which I just assume finally Chimera Ant is getting animated.. what’s the point of doing a total remake of the original when they have ongoing new material from the HxH manga.. you know if you haven’t told me all this now, by 10/2, I will be like “What the hell is this?” lol.. because I was totally expecting this new anime to be starting at NGL.. instead of reboot doing the whole thing over..

          • http://zerodestinypro.blogspot.com/ Zero_Destiny

Yeah I don’t know how I didn’t think of Death Note as an example that was one of their more big hits in the recent years. lol Most of slipped my mind. I don’t have too many problems with Studio Madhouse. I’m sad that it’s a reboot but kind of glad because it gives me a chance to re-experience everything again. But that of course brings in the inevitable fact that I’ll be constantly comparing it to the original which may make the experience worse then it should be.

Hopefully the anime is a good and faithful adaption that doesn’t have bad pacing or anything. I feel the same about the actors. It upset me at first but I’m pretty happy with the new cast for the most part. The choices seem to be good one. Granted I wanted the original but hey this isn’t the original show so whatever I’ll take what I can get. I’m sure it will be sort of a  transition but hopefuly the new actors can come through for me.

I think the anime is trying to advertise the manga. Well I mean all animes based off of mangas do that but it feels like this new show is meant to get more new people into the series that haven’t seen the last anime or read the manga. And it’s trying to bring people back who stopped reading because of the hiatuses. The anime can act as a good memory refresher. That’s just my two cents on the whole thing.

Anyways like I said in one of my earlier comments I’m excited and happy but at the same time don’t really know what to think and am worried. I got a big list of worries about how they can mess it up. But hey if you look for the bad that’s all you’ll find. Gonna try to focus more on my happy opinions and just keep my fingers crossed that this adaption will do the series justice.

          • mikanko

            lol

I remember the topic we were talking about HxH a couple months ago.  It seems you missed the original post I was responding to where I was kinda disappointed they were remaking the series rather than a continuation.

          • Aoshi00

yeah, I totally missed it, I just naturally assumed they would pick up at where they left off before since that’s how the 3 previous OVAs were, I just read the blurb from the latest tankboubon the anime would start again.. still find it a little hard to believe.. I guess Zero Destiny explained it pretty well after so many hiatus it’s been a while, but most fans never stopped reading the manga all these years.. and the original TV series’s animation was good for the most part and had really good pacing.. the OVAs’ animation weren’t as good but still ok..

Good thing I hear that from you guys first, because I don’t follow anime news anymore, otherwise when I first see the first episode next week I would be really shocked by the reboot and new voice cast :) Man, I was anxious to see how Gon (voiced by Naruto) and Killua venture into NGL and let the search for Kaito and bloodbath begin *.*…

          • mikanko

From season previews it seems to be planned to at least go to 50ish eps.  I’m guessing they’re going to see how well it does before committing further.

          • http://zerodestinypro.blogspot.com/ Zero_Destiny

Hm thanks for the info. But I’m always a little cautious of those previews. And in the worst case scenarios some longer animes have been canceled and cut in half. :( Anyways I guess I won’t be satisfied until I know for a matter of fact the episode count. Anyways the 50 episode count does make me fear that the show will ether rush all the earlier story arcs to show the new ones or never get around to the new ones. *sigh*

Oh well lots of anime now seemed to be planned for 52 episodes and then get another season of 52 episodes. Like that Fairy Tail anime going on right now and the D.Gray-Man anime that I barely watched. lol Maybe we can get more episodes if we’re lucky and it does well in marketing and ratings. And hopefully the studio won’t rush through the material before they get a chance to get a second season. That is if that’s the actual episode count of course. Anyways it makes me a little happier to think it will go past 13 episodes.

          • KyoyaHibari

Yea I heard about that too, I really hope they follow through with it this time around, this is one of many series that needs a full adaption, as opposed to some of the other crap out there, I mean, how come Rainbow only got one season when the manga ended a few years prior, it was literally halfway through the manga, if they had like another 24 episodes, it would be perfect, but I don’t want to really get into my burning dismay yet again about that, but I can’t believe Seikon no Qwaser got a second series but Rainbow didn’t…for the love of god…

      • KyoyaHibari

Yea, I can’t believe I forgot to mention HxH in my comment, I’m a moron, it’s only my favourite shonen series, and the remake comes out in a week practically lol

  • KyoyaHibari

Lol what now? I mean, it would be cool if Takei did a total remake of the Shaman King manga and patched things up, because the additional Kanzenban chapters were pretty bad even though they provided a true look at the conclusion of the series, I think Takei was too caught up in actually making legitimate chapters to tell us what happened before the ending that it ended up extremely rushed and shallow; plus the way they “defeated” Zeke/Hao was too tree-hugger and a bit anti-climactic. I want a deep, mature, intense & morally stimulating, remake of Shaman King, that would be awesome.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002395146276 Peace Legacy

Agreed, Shaman king was my childhood (until the point it got canceled, before KZB)
but remaking Shaman king just won’t work, the series is just not old enough for that yet

      • KyoyaHibari

Well I mean, there’s been other series that have been remade pretty early, Rurouni Kenshin (sorta, but the new movie looks crappy), Berserk, etc.

        • Aoshi00

The movie looks pretty nice from the couple of screenshots, too early to tell (the art is different but director is still Furuhashi Kazuhiro).. if I were in Jpn I would definitely go see it on the big screen.. would just love to hear Suzukaze Mayo as Kenshin again.. it’s good to see all the old VAs reprising their roles..

          http://www.kenshin-tv.com/shinsaku/index.html

          • KyoyaHibari

Yea it looks pretty nice, but if I can recall, wasn’t it supposed to a story of the Kyoto arc from Misao’s perspective? I don’t know…I’m in the same boat as most others about that, for 1, I want them to do a full anime remake start to finish for the manga (eventually), with Watsuki supervising to make some well needed changes to the Jinchuu arc. And 2) I’m not sure Misao’s perspective of the Kyoto arc will work out well…

          • Aoshi00

The shot w/ Shishio and Usui looks good :).. I dunno, the Jpn official site here never mentioned anything about the story being told from Misao’s perspective, so I’m not sure where people got that bit from.. anyway it’s obviously more or less just a summary of the Kyoto arc remade as a two-part movie (like they did that a bit in Seisou-hen).. If it’s being shown in the theater, the animation quality should be pretty high and it’s nice it’s by the same director of the TV series and two OVAs..

Like I said before I doubt they would do a total reboot at this point (I really don’t think every series needs a reboot), they just finished re-airing selected old eps in Jpn to get people ready for the movies.. if there’s one thing I want, it’s just a continuation of the Jinchuu anime eventually.. which is what I wanted for Hunter x Hunter as well, just a continuation picking up at the Chimera Ant arc.. I’m surprised the new HxH anime is a total reboot w/ a new cast..  So I’m glad they’re using all the same original cast for the new Kenshin OVA/movies.. otherwise it wouldn’t be consistent, last thing I want is a remake really…

          • KyoyaHibari

@aoshi00:disqus Yea, I’m hoping they go through with Hunter X Hunter, it would be nice if they did the same to Rurouni Kenshin, Ninku and others too, but we’ll see. Anyways, there’s only been about 50 episodes proposed for the new Hunter X Hunter so far, but hopefully they will add continuations to it and stuff, and hopefully, Viz will pick it up in full this time around, and potentially on Blu-Ray since they are starting to delve into Blu-Rays more with the new Bleach & Naruto movies along with Professor Layton. There’s a bunch of anime they need to release on DVD & Blu-Ray instead of licensing new stuff, they should domesticate some of their recent streaming pick ups for home video, like Reborn, (which I’m also waiting on for a sequel) Tiger and Bunny on Blu-Ray, Inuyasha Final Act and possibly the original on Blu-ray, Nura 1 & 2 on Blu-Ray, etc.

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

There’s rarely…rarely been a manga “remake” to the point of them being nonexistent (yay, inb4 someone prove me wrong). An anime remake would be great, of course, but for Takei’s sake, he should go for an Ultimo anime.

    • PrinceHeir

what was wrong about the last episode of shaman king??? :

never read the manga. but the final episode was awesome; though i agree with the anti climatic battle felt too rush and didn’t give Hao chance to fight back.

if this is like the new Rurouni Kenshin adaptation that would be nice :P

anyone notice the revival of some of the old series you grew up with like Rurouni Kenshin, Hunter X Hunter, and now this???

      • KyoyaHibari

I’m referring to the manga, it’s alot different lol, if you read the additional Kanzenban chapters, you’ll know what I’m talking about, when they are fighting the 10 Patch members, in the Kanzenban chapters (which aside from volume 1 are actually the only ones I’ve read lol) they basically go area to area, one of the 5 warriors of Yoh, Ren, Horohoro, Lyserg and Chocolove faces off with one of the members for like 5 pages then moves on without much action or depth to the characters they fight really, they should show their pasts and how they may have played a part in the series overall instead of passing them off as just stepping stones in order to confront Zeke which was also a really boring conclusion and very anti-climactic, they should have at least FOUGHT Zeke for awhile before they ended up doing…well, I don’t want to spoil it really.

        • PrinceHeir

          interesting :D

might read the manga if i had the time

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clifford-Pierre-Louis/1389950966 Clifford Pierre Louis

I feel the series was very under rated, it was a great manga and anime, i recall not being able to put down Vol.1 when i first read it after having my interest peaked by the anime which I watched on foxbox(4kids TV way back when), but i digress a remake of the series is always welcome. For some reason this reminds me of Toonami back in the day when Cartoon Network was the $#!+ but now…well you know :(

Just posting to say the GBA Shaman King games were very good. Like Symphony of the Night Castlevania games. A bit uglier looking, though also more challenging.

  • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

I remember reading parts of the manga when I had a chance to buy a Shonen Jump from a grocery store.

  • Learii

i would love to see shaman  king game on ps3 that be epic

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

Sure, add another shonen jump title to the hack and slash list.

      • Kitestwinblades

Shaman king is pretty old and unique. The old games where free for all fighters and side scrolling/platformer rather than hack and slash. Besides what would the characters of shaman king be doing? I doubt they’d be fighting armies of anything XD I’d REALLY be interested in seeing a Current Gen game of it too. there’s plenty of potential!

      • KyoyaHibari

I never watched the anime but the manga started to get really weird near the later half and it ended without much of an ending… The series reminded me of the way Yu Yu Hakusho was, started off slow, got off to a really good climax then just petered off at the end. Doesn’t sound like this new one shot is going to wrap things up any better :|

I realize now that the YYH ending is more meaningful than what I first thought when I was younger, I thought it was a great twist and a good idea on Togashi and Yusuke’s part, I use to think *SPOILER Yusuke losing to Yomi was the stupidest thing, but after rewatching it, it felt morally just, I mean, Yusuke couldn’t become the Ruler of the Demon World AND live with Keiko, he made the right decision, he doesn’t wanna turn out like his bastard father after all lol. I thought the final saga itself was weaker than the actual climax, aside from Yusuke, Kurama and Hiei’s fights, the rest were practically non-existant and seemingly pointless, I really wanted to see Shishi duke it out, but it was only seen for like 10 seconds and he lost -.-, and btw Kanzenban was garbage, I suggested he do a total rewrite of the series but who knows, or he closely edits and supervises a new anime.

I love that ending as well. In the same way on how Slam Dunk ended their Nationals. I think those kinds of endings are better than making them the king of the world. ^^

Wait so is this “big project”  Shaman King related? Is it something new that Hiroyuki Takei is going to do? Does anyone know anything yet? This really got me curious. I loved Shaman King and this new story for Yoh and what ever this “Big Project” is really has me exited.
