Dead Space 3 Takes Place On A Frozen Planet, First Details Inside

Electronic Arts is developing a new Dead Space game. No surprise there, but it doesn’t take place on a spaceship. Dead Space 3 is set on Tau Volantis, an icy planet where Isaac Clarke has to wade through white-out blizzard conditions.

Early in Dead Space 3, Isaac crash lands on the planet. He believes he may be the only survivor and makes his way to an abandoned waystation, which he uses for shelter from the snowstorm. There he finds a survivor who is severely injured. Isaac speaks to the near dead comrade who reveals there are other survivors that trekked off to another facility. One of them is Ellie, a key character from the original Dead Space game. Isaac grabs a snowsuit and heads into the blizzard.

Later in the game, Isaac reunites with Ellie and a new character named Jennifer. The trio scale a mountain, but Jennifer is reluctant to do so. She’s a tech type excited over finding a codex and plans to reverse engineer research by a group called Rosetta to gain access to it. As they climb up the mountain, they hear a howl from below, but cannot spot what kind of creature made the sound.

The enemies in Dead Space 3 are being referred to as "the hive mind."

This news comes from our mole that sent us details about Electronic Arts’ Syndicate reboot a few months early (stories: here and here). Pictures are from previous Dead Space games.

That can’t be right. The Dead Space team left about two weeks ago. Why would the next sequel be announced so quickly?

    • Solomon_Kano

They closed one branch of Visceral (the Australian branch), the rest of the teams are still around.

    • http://twitter.com/Cyn3x Justin

Just because a single office is closed out does not mean a project is dropped, and in this case a extremely profitable project at that

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

They haven’t announced the sequel at all. If you read the whole article, it says the information came from a mole

  • DanteJones

From the info in the post, I wonder if EA will be steering away from necromorphs in this one? It’d be a nice change of pace to have a whole new set of enemies instead of a couple new necromorph mutations plus the ones from the earlier games.

It -does- take place in an age where humans have traveled pretty far into space so they could just, ya’know, be like “Look! A new species of violent mutant monsters that want to kill you!” or something. XD

  • skull2j

Well on IGN awhile ago, they had a picture of a poster at EA and it said Dead Space 3 on it. So i dont think that this is wrong or fake.

  • LezardValeth

How is this game getting a third installment…wtf.

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

to put it scientifically? The others made a buttload of money

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Humzah-Jan/100001147084979 Humzah Jan

That and the ending wasn’t closure at all in DS2.

        • Ludakriss

Yeah, man. ***SPOILERS*** Didn’t the last boss say something about “Mars must thrive again” or something on those grounds?

    • punkchobit

Cause they are the first good games to come out of EA

  • Solomon_Kano

Huh. Sounds interesting. Then again, I’m a sucker for snow settings in games. Why? I have no idea.

    • JustThisOne

Hee hee. Ice planets always reminds me of that one scene from Star Wars. I guess Issac is Luke Skywalker.

      • Solomon_Kano

:O I think you’ve just uncovered my attachment to snow settings! I loved that part of the movie and Hoth always was my favorite level in Star Wars Battlefront on PS2.

  • PrinceHeir

i though Isaac successfully escape and will be able to return to earth??

haven’t played Dead Space 2 yet so i don’t know what happen in the end.

very excited for this. i just hope after this they’ll make a new IP as strong as Dead Space.

  • Thomas Evans

I don’t believe this story at all, it has got to be a hoax! I am a huge dead space fan, I played through 2, and the story at the end was being steered in a totally different direction than an ice planet with a new kind of enemy. Take this as what it is. An anonymous tip from an anonymous source about a game that is years from being released. I call BS.

  • SalomeHarras

I’m probably in the minority here, but I don’t think Dead Space should continue from an artistic integrity point of view.  I would rather not elaborate on this because it would take a lot of words, but I personally feel it’s detrimental to the core of what makes the original so strong.  While I strongly believe that not all stories need sequels (or prequels, or side stories, or whatever), I felt it was possible to continue Dead Space in a 2nd game…I just didn’t agree with they way they actually went about it.

That’s just my opinion, and I hope this “tip” doesn’t turn out to be true.

    • http://twitter.com/NeverUnplaying Sonny Oliveira

I agree, the first was so good and Extraction was a fun prequel. The second kinda was going off the path and this one isn’t even in space!

    • punkchobit

I want as much dead space as ea can make. It took 20 or so zelda ganes before i was too bored to play twiligt princess. Theres over a hundred mario games and people are still excited for the new 3ds one.

      • SalomeHarras

The games you mentioned have 3 main things going for them:

-From a narrative point of view, they don’t lock themselves into a singular experience…hell, you can argue that their precise lack of narrative is what allows them to be economically exploitable to that degree.

-They’ve had some of the greatest game designers in history behind them, infusing creativity and/or solid gameplay to reinforce a great overall experience.  That being said, of all of the Mario games released, I only consider 3 of them to be truly great (not that the others are bad, they just aren’t as great imo), which I can say the same for the Zelda series.

-They’re not as plagued by the horrors of “familiarity” as something like Dead Space is.  Eventually, if you don’t innovate, you will reach a ceiling and “familiarity” will saturate your experience to the point of not being enjoyable for any game, but certain types of games are more resilient to this than others.

        • punkchobit

” -They’re not as plagued by the horrors of “familiarity” as something like Dead Space is. Eventually, if you don’t innovate, you will reach a ceiling and “familiarity” will saturate your experience to the point of not being enjoyable for any game,”

Exactly why i was too bored to finish twilight princess

    • Tarlol

While I agree with you that making sequels to Dead Space (at least, making sequels starring Isaac) totally messes with what made the original game so strong, I think it’s easy to enjoy these sequels on a different level. Adding on to the story doesn’t destroy the original game. It’s still a great work. These sequels should be read more as a “just-for-fun” sort of thing. Judging by this brief explanation of the new plot, I’d say it’s fairly clear the devs are having fun with it. They sure do love their movies.

      • SalomeHarras

I understand your point, and I won’t lie, I sometimes indulge in these guilty pleasures, however, you have to ask yourself if the game in question really needs to be called “Dead Space” at that point.  When you dilute or remove the traits that identify what the original was to a point, can it really be called by that title anymore?  See, I wouldn’t have a problem with this concept if it were another game.  Hell, they can even recycle a lot of the assets they used for Dead Space in this new game, that’s fine (to a point), I just have a problem (again, from an artistic integrity pov) with it being called Dead Space.  At that point, you’re just shamelessly exploiting the name of Dead Space for financial gain, rather than legitimately expanding the series in a positive way.  From a business perspective, that’s fine I guess, and as long as demand is there, that’s ok too, but for me at least it chips away at the very essence of why I liked the game to begin with.

On an unrelated note, I completely agree that Isaac should be removed as the main protagonist.  It’s not that I have anything against Isaac, it’s just that his story is told and there really isn’t anything more you can do with him at this point.  To be honest, I felt he shouldn’t have been the main protagonist of 2 either, and that ambiguity over his fate could have been used positively in the 2nd game.

        • Tarlol

I agree with you that Isaac’s story should have been over with after the first game. It is an economic issue, though. EA probably wants another Dead Space a lot more than they want another new IP. Visceral has proven itself to be a studio that is quite fond of Hollywood movies, and Hollywood movies are notorious for this type of exploitation. Look at the Alien franchise, which really should have ended with the first film. If we look at it in this light, we can see Dead Space as an homage to not only the films produced by Hollywood, but to the entire Hollywood movie making process.

Well, that’s my positive spin. To be honest I just agree with you that it’s lame, but I love Dead Space as a game enough for it to overwhelm my irritation with its sacrifice of artistic integrity. Sad truth is, this is just how art, especially high-budget, costly art, functions under capitalism most of the time.

        • http://www.facebook.com/NiNFAN1990 Matt Bradley

Then you have to ask yourself also; Should Resident Evil have ever been called Resident Evil?

          • SalomeHarras

Actually, I don’t have to ask myself that because I’m not talking about Resident Evil at all…

I’m not going to go off on a tangent on RE, but I’ll just say that the RE example is a very interesting one.  I think it would have been more constructive to build upon the Alien -> Aliens transition that Tariol brought up, which has a lot of parallels to RE.

  • Syltique

I’m all for this.  The Thing is one of my favorite horror movies.

  • aoihana

Another Dead Space? Hold on, let me stock up on diapers, I ran out when I played the first 20 minutes of Dead Space 2.

  • Chow

Isn’t Ellie from Dead Space 2?  (or am I remembering the names wrong?)

*Realizes something and looks behind over shoulders*

    “Wot?”

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FH7K2O7JRA42VMVMPVJN5QYJ2M Jessah

Yes, you are correct. Ellie was only in DS2. The author clearly never played the games or they’d have known that.

  • http://www.blackxino.blogspot.com Xino

    deeply hoping for co-op experience

    • TheGoddamnedKamina

       wouldn’t Co-Op boner-kill the whole horror-aspect of the game?

      • http://www.blackxino.blogspot.com Xino

i suggest you look into more horror genre that supports 2 player A.I or 2 player co-op

        • http://www.facebook.com/kainevil.rc Kainevil Rc

You know nothing about the horror genre son. You probably think resident evil 5 was the scariest and coolest RE ever LOL.

i’m gonna ignore you for now.
I don’t even have time to educate idiots like you online.

      • Squatchmen

here’s the thing- they strongly established the fact that Dead Space 2 was more action orientated.

so no, having Co-Op for an action game is a god sent. by the way, I like the original more than #2

Storywise, I wonder what cause the ship Issac/Elie were on to crash on a icy planet, and no one’s forgotten what of the other Markers. Besides that DS 3 is must be quite fun to play when it comes out.

  • Ludakriss

This is really rather bad. I mean, sure, I appreciate the details and the story-as you would expect from the Dead Space franchise- sounds great and intriguing. However the fact that the details had to be LEAKED rather than given to the media by the actual company. Ehh not sure it’s cool. More pressure on Viceral now.

Isaac should not be the main character anymore – hasn’t that guy had enough? :)

Seriously; he’s unluckier than Jack Bauer.

Already with you guys. Great games!

Just don’t screw it up, pal. I’m personally pretty sceptical about the ice planet idea, But I’ll hold my fan-rage in until the game’s out.

    • Squatchmen

please listen to Nicoles farewell,  but stop it before the 1:50 mark.

picture this: there is a giant holographic map showing the planets surrounding a ubiquitous planet, with several other planets in orbit, in the background shows little hints of what happened in the previous games. the camera slowly moves forward getting ever so close the planet where Isaac is suppose to land on.

next cut scene, you see him in the crater he dug himself in on a low angle from the camera in a blistering storm

    … haha posted twice sry

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicholas-Denash/100001474718218 Nicholas Denash

This article is so bad and such a waste of time.  It looks like the “mole” they have at the studio has both been discovered and tricked.

Firstly; Ellie was in Dead Space 2, not Dead Space.

Secondly; The Hive Mind is the boss at the end of the original Dead Space, so sorry to say but we’ve already encountered and beaten the Hive Mind.

Thirdly; An ice planet, in my opinion, would hurt the Dead Space series instead of helping it because:
         1) It’d be like Lost PLanet (great game by the way)
         2) it’s named Dead SPACE…not Dead ICE.

Dead space gains its appeal by feeling helpless inside the depths of space, whether it’s on the Ishimura or inside the Sprawl.  If it were on an ice planet it would be an entirely different game.  Granted it would be good, being a Dead Space game can’t dissapoint, and though I agree in series taking new turns and new directions, I don’t agree Dead Space should be on an “ice planet”

And, again being my opinion, I have to disagree with everyone who is saying Isaac’s story is complete.  People first said so with Dead Space one, and in a way I can see why they say that, but with how Dead Space 2 was executed and played, I think Dead Space 2 was a perfect sequel.

As for Dead Space 3, I think Isaac still needs to be the hero, as for all the rest of the Dead Space games (within the main franchise of course; not the spin offs, prequels, etc.)  But as of Dead Space 2 Isaac has become a Maker of Markers if you will, which means both the government and the Unitologists WILL NOT leave Isaac alone.  His story will continue until he either dies for one of their causes or destroys all the Markers.  Though I will say I have a feeling the series will end with Isaac’s death; possibly even him killing himself so that neither organization can use him).

    • http://www.facebook.com/allan.locke2 Allan Locke

great points. i agree isaac probably will end up doing himself in, the marker changes all.. so he’s not functioning mentally on the same level as everybody else, i don’t think he ever really was, firstly dealing with a mostly absent father, and later the disappearance of his mother in his adolecent years. after finding love with a young medical student he loses her too, and has to deal with her death again and again. isaac always gets what he wants along with something he doesn’t and often in an order that’s very taxing mentally and emotionally. complex issues created by losing his loved ones, and the insanity bred by the marker are tearing him apart. he only suffers from mild dementia at the moment, he’s cognitive abilities seem fine he only suffers from hallucinations obviously designed by the marker to wear him down and frighten him, more serious forms of dementia would see isaac losing track of time and creating false experiences and memories kinda like strauss’. i’m pretty sure isaac will be in the next game they’ve done so much to build this awesome character, it’d be a shame to throw it all away now.. and there are so many questions about his past that must be satisfied. unfortantely the future doesn’t look so bright dementia is a serious thing and if it continues social, emotional and higher level thinking capabilities will deminish, and anyone involved with isaac especially ellie who he appears to care for, observable in his desire to get her off the station “also proof of his fear of losing people” would have to cope with it, and the potential danger of being killed by him, and the situations they’re placed in.

however i must disagree with your feelings toward going to a frozen planet. it’s a great idea and completely harmless, in fact kinda obvious this whole thing started on a planet ” earth in the chicxulub crater”. the game isn’t called dead space because it’s in space and the dead <– "scary" are everywhere epescially since they don't stay that way very long<–"even scarier". space is just one of the settings and space ships are just a necessary means of transport, low and behold, to planets so their resources can harvested and brought back on a space ship to civilization usually orbiting or inhabiting a celestial body of some sort, which usually are rather cold, why.. because space is cold dam cold. and obviously it's a frozen planet (doesn't have to be but ice is far more unsettling than rainbows and lakes), it means it's solid there's a surface to walk on, which means light and survivable conditions for the cultivation of life.. plants and animals and if the article is anything to go on its the latter because plants don't howl. another good reason for a frozen planet, is weather. i wonder how long he could survive outside,.. mmm this is kind of like when isaac runs out of air, and when he has to negotiate the functions on the ships. also dead space likes to make things difficult by using scarcity of equipment in a frozen baron raging wilderness how abundant are your supplies my friend? space and ships aren't the only things in the dead space universe, btw which all reside in SPACE.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Ilfariun Ryan Hamilton

You do realize the title of the game doesn’t represent space, right? “Dead Space” is the area immediately surrounding the marker that the marker doesn’t effect.

    • Squatchmen

I disagree, like you mentioned about Lost Planet (its Lost)

I do agree that it shouldnt be outside, where necromorphs hide in the light.
personally, it should be half/half, where Isaac is inside, possibly underground buildings, but outside he goes in a giant ass cave.

maybe one necromorph that stalks you in whiteness

  • Citygator

DS1 and 2 are awesome. Love the story and action. I found the first terrifying and could only do less than an hour of play time straight before it was taxing. Kept wondering what was around the corner. The second was just flat out fun. Great quotes… “Stick around, I’m full of bad ideas”…”is it safe?… I don’t know how it could be”. and of course the end “What?”

I like Issac’s story and would love for him to find some peace at the end. Wtf is wrong with a happy ending? I liked Ellie too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alexander-James-Marshall/100000744811689 Alexander James Marshall

To be honest the only way they could make that work effectivly was if Isaac crashed on the planet towards the end of the 3rd game, similer to how the first game played out. What id really like to see is for the game to be stepped up a level, im not saying its bad its one of the best games ive played in years, im just wondering how it would go if they made it free roam, so you had access to any given part of the ship or whatever it happens to be at any time, you still get your objectives but youd need to find your own way to them, something could happen as the game went along, like flesh blocking a rout or an entire section decompressing. i donno just a thought btu i really look forward to the third, i mean at the end of dead space 2, at the end of the credits some guy says about other facilitys, that the sprawl was just one of maney.

    horror survivals are the best.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Soubhik-Paul/100001936768035 Soubhik Paul

you spoke my mind…I couldn’t play it more than 1 hour constant…

  • http://www.facebook.com/alexgormankiddo Alex Gorman

I agree that being set on an ice planet would hurt the series greatly. Personally? I wouldn’t mind a prequel of the first Dead Space, where we explore the beginnings of the Necromorphs and how they got on Aegis 7. I personally feel that they didn’t touch the matter much in the games or movies, but then again I haven’t been able to play much of Dead Space 2 and the other games. Hell, I’d absolutely love to see a live action Dead Space movie, but then again it may take away the beauty of the game where it kept you on your toes the whole time and kept you completely on edge the whole time.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=503049800 Nabeel Chutkae

the prequel to dead space is the animated movie. it shows exactly how the necromorphs started.

you have to put this into the game:

its both gameplay and story driven.
Dead Space 1- very scary, slower pace
Dead Space 2- less scary, fast action
My idea is that in DS3, it is still action based, and in the first walkthrough it is linear and all doors for said path are open even if tracking back, most other areas are obviously closed off and or locked.
Second walkthrough will grant the player access to a once locked door or area, only one per level. Once inside, instant dark, very moody, bleak. These areas MUST scare players. only one or two necromorphs in a given area, once killed, players may also read uncoded CEC material that expands the Dead Space universe i.e. how markers are made, and where the infection might have originated.
This I hope makes it in the build of a game

Why do i sense that this will be more inspired by ”The Thing” than anything else?

I have nothing against that because it would be so fucking awesome if we get introduced to necromorph types that can mimic humans perfectly.

Would be an insane twist for me but i think these guys are too smart.
But i love the icy planet idea :)

haha you tell him. just like the previous statement before, it would be cool and great to have Co-Op for an action game, and even if they go back to the originals formula to ACTUALLY scare people, they could have a pathway system before meeting up again- so each player gets a thrill

I call bullshit because there was a connection between him and the girl from DS2 and she was with him in the end….she would obviously survive and yea…im just gunna stop there with your bullshit…
