A Closer Look At How RPG Maker Plus Allows For Different Time Periods

By Ishaan . September 30, 2011 . 4:02pm

RPG Maker Plus for Nintendo DS is due out this December. The game allows users to create modern and sci-fi settings, as well as historical settings such as the Warring States or Sengoku periods. You can even combine them all. Here’s a look at how the same character can be made to reflect the sci-fi, modern and historical settings:

As you would expect, characters sprites can also be given different expressions:

Each setting also comes with its own enemy designs:

RPG Maker Plus can be used to design a variety of environments, including fields, cities, dungeons. Here’s a look at the different editors and tilesets in the game that allow you to do that:

    It looks good…

But…you can’t make your own character portraits, huh? That’s a little disappointing. I had plans for a Pokemon RPG where you control the human characters…There goes that idea.

I agree, it sucks you can’t customize more, that your example is prob why. They don’t want to get screwed with any copyright. I bet many people would make their own Pokemon, Final Fantasy, Mother, etc. Actually, I think Mother can be made pretty well on this.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

The first guy and girl character on the left gives off so much “LoH: Zero no Kiseki” vibes, it’s not even funny.

I wish all of these were available to extend upon RPG Maker VX, not JUST the Sengoku Period Add-on… I really need some good modern and futuristic city tile sets…

    • TheGoddamnedKamina

well the RPGMaker communities are pretty huge, I’m sure you would be able to find some futuristic tilesets on one of those.

I guess, but I just hate digging through google and forums. Oh, well. XD. I might get this game though haha. *Looks at bottom of post* There’s a new version for the PC equivalent to this? Hurray!

        • TheGoddamnedKamina

It’s not exactly equivalent to this, but there’s RPG Maker VX. I heard good things about it. Played some games made with it that were actually pretty amazing. Never really made anything with it though.

Bottom-left screenie: “Our eyes met! I won’t go easy on you!” *cue Pokemon Battle music*

I like the art style used for the portraits. I played with a earlier RPG Maker when i was younger and would certainly love the DS game to come to North America so i could take another crack at it.

  • theworldofnoboundries

Damn this look damn good. But reality sucks as it probably will never come here.

  • Kitestwinblades

Will levels be uploaded!? *gets hopes up*
I mean there’s a PC equivalent, so bring it on! I love killing time on these! XD

  • MarkMario

Wait so the portraits are going to have the same pose the whole time?

I spent a lot of time with RPG Maker 2000 when it came out, though I never finished my game. Guess imma was too lazy/busy/whatsoever. But ME WANT ENG VERSION of DS version (T_T) however sadly chance of it coming here is even smaller than impossible.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Instead of offering us RPGs, maybe it’s now time for publishers to let us create our own.

I loved RM2k, RM2k3, RMXP, and RMVX and I used them a lot. I wasn’t even a teenager when I made my first RPG in RM2k, and looking back at that game now it’s pretty good actually. There are the obvious flaws you’d expect from a 10 year old, but if you can look past that. Maybe I’ll remake it some day, just for fun. :P

This was on PC however, and if this was for PC as well I’d get it, but it’s not so I won’t. I’m sure the DS game won’t allow you to make your own sprites and artwork and import them to your game, quite limiting what you could possibly do with it. I’m sure some people can enjoy it for what it is, but I always saw and used the RPG Maker series as tools. For making RPGs.

If you don’t care about making a real game, so to speak, and just want to have fun – or you simply don’t care about using the sprites, artwork, music, et cetera, that comes with the “software” – it’s probably one of the most interesting and fun games to be released for the DS, past, present, and future.

As an avid RPG Maker 2k3 user, I wholeheartedly agree with you. The PC makers are just way superior. And judging by the enemy sprites it seems that it will come with a frontal battle system… again. That’s why I use 2k3, it comes with a FF6-like system. Unless this game includes support for scripts (which I doubt) or some other battle system to choose from, I won’t even try it. Let’s hope that at least your characters appear in the battle screen for a change (not just some face picture).

I’m ignorant to the history of past RPG Maker games.  Is this one likely to make it to the West? :o

    • Draparde

most of the PC versions make it out in English to my knowledge. but im not sure about the console versions

    • http://twitter.com/Dudechileno Keycross

They do appear on the west, mainly the PC versions. The first ones were fan-translated, but since RPGMAKER XP they seemed to focus more on the western audience.

Here is the official website if you´re interested: http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/

  • Extra_Life

I would very much like this. I’d be straight on a time travelling RPG!

  • http://twitter.com/Narukahana NKH

Excellent. I’m sure that I’m not the only one who are tired with the typical medieval setting.

  • http://twitter.com/Dudechileno Keycross

First thing I thought when I saw the screenshots was SMT:Persona. Possibly because of the mix between the modern characters portraits and the monsters. It´s good to know the game itself promotes the idea of not only using fantasy-medieval settings.
