Capcom Hope Dragons Dogma Will Be As Big As Monster Hunter And Sengoku Basara

In an internally-conducted interview at Capcom, Dragon’s Dogma producer, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, says that the idea for the game originated from a director at the company wanting to create a “fantasy adventure”. As discussions ensued, the concept ultimately turned into an open world game.

The target audience for Dragon’s Dogma, Kobayashi feels, is “hardcore or fairly hardcore gamers that already have a PS3 or Xbox 360”. Regardless, he hopes that Dragon’s Dogma will be a hit in the same vein as Monster Hunter and Sengoku Basara, both of which were developed entirely from scratch as well, and are franchises that Capcom can rely on for support.

Kobayashi isn’t unrealistic, though. Speaking to the development of entirely new games — which are developed at Capcom every 2-3 years — he says: “There’s no guarantee each new title we churn out will go on to be a big hit, but I’m confident that some of them will become pivotal series in our next-generation of games.

Two examples of the kind of new games Kobyashi is talking about are the Dead Rising and Lost Planet series, each of which has sold over 4.5 million copies according to Capcom’s most recent sales data. While Kobayashi doesn’t mention specific sales numbers for Dragon’s Dogma himself, one of the captions for the interview is: “An entirely new product that aims to shatter the million mark”.

I feel the most “meh” towards this game than one can possibly feel.
Not sure what about it makes me feel so indifferent.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/jodecideion?feature=mhum TheWon and Only

It’s generic! It’s Monster Hunter without the anime Japanese appeal.

  • Arcm

I have high expectations for this game and I can’t wait to play it. It kinda looks like a mix of Demon Souls and Monster Hunter at least that’s the vibe I’m getting from all the trailers I’ve seen.

  • Syltique

I’m definitely buying it.  Looks more interesting than Skyrim to me.  I see no reason why this game shouldn’t be a success.

  • Exand

The issue I have with Dragons Dogma is I still don’t know what the game is supposed to be.

Is it like Monster Hunter where you go out to hunt monsters, but in a more traditional fantasy setting?

Is it like Skyrim where you adventure through a vast landscape with a RPG story?

Is it like Demon’s Souls / Dark Souls where it’s basically a throwback platformer with a sprinkling of RPG elements?

Or is it a combination of all 3? Until I know I can’t really get hyped for it, and I’d imagine people who are only fans of one of the three series I mentioned above can’t get hype for it either.

From what I’ve seen more in the realm of MH mixed with Demon Souls. But I know exactly where your coming from, I’ve been kind of surprised there’s been so few screens, footage that gives a clear depiction of what the game is. @gatchaman1 although can at the very least say it’s not Zelda o3o; lol

      • Exand

I agree on the surprise of how little info is out there on the game. It seems like a game that Capcom has put a lot of effort into, but the lack of information I think is giving people the “meh, we’ll see” attitude.

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/HAEBCODVH3BGFIHE47BKNDXD2I Jonathan

Thankfully, I actually like all three of the aforementioned games. . . though I wonder how well they would meld together into one game.

    • PrinceHeir

      good observation.

all in all im giving this game a chance since it’s from the directors and producer of DMC3/4 and RE4.

i wish they would bring Monster Hunter games here :

also what happened to Lost Planet series?????

it seems it just disappeared into thin air.

    • Solomon_Kano

From what I gathered of the presentations I’ve seen and previews I’ve read, it’s more like Skyrim than your other examples. Even then, it’s not very similar. It does answer your question of it has a vast landscape with an RPG story, though.

In gameplay terms, it’s a WRPG base that they’re adding action and (very) light strategy elements on top of.

The party system is more like Dragon Age but, even then, it’s doing some new things to differentiate itself. Your party members can be sent out into the world to level with other players and learn how to defeat enemies from what those players do in their presence, that’s pretty new.

The action has (light) platforming elements in the way that they approach larger enemies (think Shadow of the Colossus).

You can customize your main character like with most WRPGs, but you can also customize your pawns (party members) to a good degree.

I’m finding it interesting for all the disparate elements that they’re putting together and the new things they’re doing on top of them. Will it all come together? That remains to be seen, but the thought of what that could be like, if successful, is enough to keep me interested.

I suppose the fact that it’s taking from these other areas may put some off. From your comment, I’d imagine that you’d rather play any of those separately than have elements of them in one game.

I wasn’t impressed with the e3 demo build of Dragons Dogma. It did not have the same tension as Monster Hunter or Demon’s Souls. To me it felt more like a toned down version of them both. I hope they adjusted enough gameplay mechanics to make it feel like a challenge. I think the appeal this game will have is too just beat the piss out of mobs with some friends.

  • hush404

Dragon’s Dogma looks kewl… but what are they talking about it getting as big as monster hunter? hell aren’t they the ones not bring MHP3 out of Japan? They’re their own worst enemies at times.

    • Gatchaman1

I guess they dont feel the MH market is that big in the West as they’d like it to be. Maybe they think this’ll be more accessable

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

It’s not that they aren’t bringing it. It’s that the technology that the game runs on in Japan (a modified version of Adhoc Party) isn’t available in the U.S.

      • http://profiles.google.com/dnlblue Daniel blue

I’ve heard the biggest issue is getting permission from Sony to release a retail PS3 game without trophy support (which is compulsory in the US, but not in Japan it seems).

    • http://profiles.google.com/dnlblue Daniel blue

“aren’t they the ones not bring MHP3 out of Japan?”

No. The ones not bringing it over are Capcom USA. Blame them instead.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/HAEBCODVH3BGFIHE47BKNDXD2I Jonathan

I’m holding out hope for this game, mainly because it’s a new IP, as apposed to another sequel or rehash from CAPCOM.

As for gameplay, they’ve said it’s open world, so I’d assume it’s going to have to live up to Skyrim (a real challenge), Kingdoms of Amalur (another new IP) and other RPG franchises getting released around the same time.

that being said, I’m just happy there are more RPGs on the way for home consoles, and that there is a Mage/Fighter class lol

  • Learii

dragon dogma a open world game?  really?

    • http://profiles.google.com/dnlblue Daniel blue

hm… yes? We’ve known that since it was announced, actually.

      • Learii

lol i tho its like an action rpg like demon soul/dark soul or dragon age

btw its is an open world skyrim right? like walk around in towns, cliam up the moutains or walk around the forest?

        • Solomon_Kano

Yes, yes it is. The open-world aspect is something they talked about a good deal in announcing it. It’s not exactly an analog of any of the series you named, though.

          • Learii

i know its not analog of any of the series  i was asking if they have forests or mountains like skyrim

          • Solomon_Kano

Oh, I wasn’t saying that you thought it was. I was just saying to clarify my own comment.

        • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

Dark Souls is also open world..

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000845705140 アリャム くん

They also hope that people will buy all the 2830523497512303 DLC stuff that they’re going to release for it.
And among which, only 8 will be actually useful. :D

  • http://profiles.google.com/dnlblue Daniel blue

I don’t know, it surely has potential, but the feel I get from looking at it is that they are trying too hard to follow generic fantasy tropes. Cyclops, Griphons, Quimeras? Kings, Chosen Heroes, Medieval Europe architecture?

I’m sure there are many creative artists at Capcom and not having them try something truly outlandish and awe-inspiring in such a massive HD project seems like a waste.

Look at Monster Hunter – ingenious creature designs, yet sufficiently realistic as to not look outlandish or ridiculous. They could follow that route just fine.

OH, and I still want a proper HD Monster Hunter, Capcom! How is it going to become a hit in the West if you don’t release it on the systems we own?

*goes back to playing Portable 3rd*

  • Solomon_Kano

I hope so, too. I love seeing new IPs succeed, especially from company’s as big as Capcom. It’s nice to see that they’re committed to continuing to move forward, even though they could sit back and make bank on the 2 or 3 huge franchises they already have.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/jodecideion?feature=mhum TheWon and Only

I’m sorry I don’t a western version of Monster Hunter. I want Monster Hunter!  This is like having a american animation company trying to make anime. Sometimes the get it right Teen Titans, and Avatar. Most of the time they get it wrong.

    • Solomon_Kano

Except this isn’t a hunting game, so it wouldn’t be a western Monster Hunter.

  • eilegz

if it plays like monster hunter then no THANKS…. Capcom biggest issue its the gameplay deparment…

    • http://twitter.com/PafuPafu7 Kevin Lor

I like the gameplay mechanics for MH! Whats wrong with the gameplay? If your character was fast like Dante in DMC then the game would be too easy. The game makes you feel weak but using strat and timing to win.

    • http://profiles.google.com/dnlblue Daniel blue

Camera issues aside, Monster Hunter’s gameplay is excellent. It just plays in a way some gamers can’t seem to adapt to.

    • Kris

It actually feels more like Shadow of the Colossus. You should try it!

  • AaqibRawat

If the combat is good i am in.

i dont care about the setting

i want to kill more monsters.

sorry playing dark souls just makes me want to kill moar monsters :P!

capcom are good at combat so we should be ok

  • badmoogle

The only thing in this game that kinda puts me off so far,are the creature and character designs.
Not that they are bad or anything,it’s just that they are based on actual western folklore which has been done to death for many decades now in all the forms of western entertainment.I would have liked it more if they had given more freedom to their artists to go more wild with original fantasy concepts than to base the world on the usual Tolkien-esque elements we have already seen a million times.
I’m not saying that it has to be like Final Fantasy or something but i think they could have kept it’s style medieval and still aim for originality within those boundaries.Maybe something like Demon’s/Dark Souls but perhaps less dark and ominous and with more variety.

I think one of the things that really sets Japanese developers apart from many western ones is their ability to create really unique worlds so i kinda wish Dragon’s Dogma wouldn’t be a waste of opportunity to create something really unique in terms of art style.

  • BelmontHeir

    I’m a fairly hardcore gamer.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

Well as long as the gameplay is well, I won’t care about the art style and they can always count on my support for this game. Besides, the graphics look fantastic. Capcom, you have my interest.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=685220688 Vince Vazquez

Dragon’s Dogma strikes me as another attempt to make a “western friendly” Monster Hunter (just like with Lost Planet 2). I’m not looking forward to this then. It’s an open world game, but it’s mostly just giant monster hunting and clunky combat. Dark Souls is more interesting and compelling for western audiences, and games like Borderlands are better at providing co-op campaigns.

I really wish Capcom would stop trying to push Monster Hunter on the rest of the world. Or keep recycling what successes they have (like the multiple SKUs of Street Fighter IV, Marvel VS Capcom,  and Dead Rising). They should just stick to trying out a ton of new IPs, like Asura’s Wrath. Or reviving Mega Man in a relevant, big budget way.

But hey, maybe I’m wrong. Perhaps Dragon’s Dogma has a ton of story elements, interesting characters and great world design? If it does, they sure haven’t been showing it off like that.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

It should have good story elements, with the story writer of Breath of Fire involved. The one thing I’m curious about is whether we’d be riding dragons, but that’s just me. Kinda weird that we weren’t even given a trailer regarding the story or more on the gameplay elements.

Translation:  Capcom hopes they can release sequel after sequel to Dragon’s Dogma with minor updates for $60 each.

Translation: it will only come out in Japan.

    • darkraiders

Dragon Dogma is planned to be released in NA on march 27.
If Capcom would have released this game only in Japan i’m almost sure they would have made a big mistake this seem like the kind of game that’s more popular in NA then Japan.

      • BGMcDF

I know they’re releasing it here. Sengoku BASARA is only released in Japan and Monster Hunter is largely for that region as well, hence the joke. And I’m expecting a lot of comparisons to Dragon Age on release, not all of them favorable. Hell, few of them.

  • http://twitter.com/ExceptionL ExceptionL

I think this is Simply Capcom’s Response to Skyrim, Dark Souls, etc. like how Sengoku Basara was their Dynasty warriors.

  • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

    The Monster is big enough

  • theworldofnoboundries

Well with Berserk Weapon inside this game is already sold for me and i believe more of the West would want to try this game.

  • http://twitter.com/StizzyStrawHat Stizzy Straw Hat

I hope so, too. I think this will be the sleeper pick of the year, folks.
