Tales Studio Will Be Absorbed In Namco Bandai Games

By Spencer . November 20, 2011 . 11:30pm

Tales Studio Will Be Absorbed In Namco Bandai GamesNamco Bandai announced the Tales Studio will no longer be a separate entity. Tales Studio was previously run as a fully owned subsidiary of Bandai Namco Group. Pending board approval on November 29, Tales Studio will be dissolved and absorbed into Namco Bandai Games starting on January 1, 2012.

While Namco Bandai did not announced a reason for absorbing Tales Studio, this does not necessarily mean the end of the Tales series. Tales of Innocence R for PlayStation Vita is slated for release on January 26, 2012. Tales of the Heroes: Twin Braves, an action spinoff for PSP, will come out on February 23, 2012. Namco Bandai also has plans to release Tales of Graces f for PlayStation 3 next year.

Namco Bandai has other internal teams like Project ACES (Ace Combat), Project Soul (Soulcalibur), and a Tekken team. Perhaps, Tales team would function like these other groups instead of a separate studio.

I’m glad you guys didn’t make the title of the article like some other sites did!

      Lemme guess. Destructoid?

      srsly

So it was hard for us to get Tales games outside of Japan when they were a seperate part of NamcoBandai. How much harder will it be now when they are absorbed into NamcoBandai? =(

I hope this will make me so much happier when I´m wrong and they start localizing all Tales games that they make.

  • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

I hope this is good thing

If they continue to make good Tales of games, no problem.

  • aoihana

    Fuuuuu-Sion-HA!

    /。◕□◕)/  (◕□◕。

They were awesome as separate entities, so now they’re bound to be even greater!

Seriously though, I’m pretty sure they’ll be a dedicated internal team like the rest of their franchises.

“Tales Studio Will Be Absorbed in Namco Bandai Games”

    “…Namco Bandai Games…”

    “…Bandai…”

…Oh dear. Bad Bandai memories rushing back in. Does anybody have a freakout montage?

    • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

Less amounts of localized quality Gundam games in the past and their excessive drooling towards DBZ was all I remembered of them, pre-merger.

      • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/DrakosAmatras DrakosAmatras

Much of my bad memories revolve around how flimsily they handle their Tokusatsu games (Kamen Rider and occasionally Super Sentai), especially considering they’re part of Bandai’s yearly cash cows. That, and a good part of their internally developed games just aren’t that remarkable in quality. Some, like Crisis Beat and Digimon World 3 are charming while still flawed, while some, like Digimon World 4, are downright disappointing.

Seriously speaking, I’m not very worried, but there’s still a big cloud of skepticism and inconfidence (regarding Bandai) looming in my head.

I don’t know what kind of effect will born from this for tales franchise outside japan. i want to hope that this will bring good thing for localization (not hoping to much tough since it is namco bandai)

is not like they will localize Vesperia hybrid complete PS3, or make sure to confirm or deny if a tales title will be localized or not at least 6 month after japanese release, or make Xillia localization much much faster and getting better marketing (graces f localization is quite long with almost no marketing push), or making future tales title get simulteanous release, or making HD remaster of unreleased japanese tales game for worldwide release:P

my only greatest wish that this will resulting in much faster release of budget/best version of japanese only tales game (at least one year after release like other bamco francise )

  • Tom_Phoenix

If the absorption of Banpresto video game operations is any indication, this will change….absolutely nothing.

Assuming the development teams will remain as they are, this is really just a formality.

    • kroufonz

you mean like how even less banpresto title localized after absorption?

      • Tom_Phoenix

No offence, but as much as I would like to see more Banpresto/B.B. Studio titles getting localised, the fact that they are not being localised has jack squat to do with Banpresto’s video game operations being absorbed into Namco Bandai Games.

Instead, it has everything to do with most Banpresto/B.B. Studio titles being licensing nightmares and from extremely niché genres. It doesn’t help that the few localisation efforts that have been made haven’t exactly lit the sales charts on fire (to put it mildly), thus putting off publishers from localising even those titles that realistically could make their way outside of Japan.

Banpresto’s video game operations getting absorbed into Namco Bandai Games ended up changing nothing and that includes the likelihood of localisation. Heck, Endless Frontier is preety much proof of this. Even in Japan, it was released AFTER the absorption took place and it STILL ended up getting localised.

        • Gatchaman1

Endless Frontier and OG PS2 games have no licensing issues and neither will 2nd OG for PS3 so thats a moot point.
Only the ones like SRW Z2, L, W, etc are a problem.

          • kroufonz

            and summon night series

          • Tom_Phoenix

I get the feeling you didn’t read my post past the words “licensing nightmares”…

Licensing isn’t the only problem when talking about Banpresto/B.B. Studio titles. Turn-based tactics games have a small audience, particularly outside of Japan. Also, Banpresto/B.B. Studio games and the SRW series in particular tend to be extremely text heavy, which results in very high localisation costs. And lastly, all localisation attempts so far have preety much been commercial failures, meaning little profit or even loss for the people who put in the effort to bring these games outside of Japan.

You seem to be under the impression that publishers are just lining up to localise these games and that “big, bad, mean” Namco Bandai simply isn’t letting them. Unfortunately, the truth is that, from a business standpoint, Banpresto/B.B. Studio games simply aren’t very attractive. In other words, these games aren’t being localised simply beacuse nobody wants to localise them; the audience for them is simply too small to justify the expense such projects would entail.

One more thing. This discussion was about Banpresto/B.B. Studio games in general, the majority of which are not OG titles. For them, the “licensing nightmares” point still stands.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

And? Banpresto has recently been a part of games that had anything to do with Super Robot Wars, and SRW titles continue to have Macross series in it. And when there’s Macross…

        • Gatchaman1

OG Series.   They came to the U.S. on GBA via ATLUS. No licensed characters.
OG PS3. No hint of localization.

  • Mystena

I’m not sure what to think. I guess my biggest worry is whether or not the group will exist in an independent capacity to produce the series. On the other hand, I suspect that the main reason for this change is reducing management costs and perhaps make it easier/cheaper to swap and share development resources.

Having worked in a media company, it’s amazing how pathetically political things can get when it comes to even shared server space.

  • Benny Tormoes

Insert “please localize Vesperia PS3 or Xillia” comment here ;)

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

Wasn’t Tales Studios a part of NB to begin with? I don’t see how much this absorption will change anything since they have made one of NB’s key titles.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_472QBVARRYERRGHATSUGCVCTTA Ian

I hope this means the localization of tales game is easier as naruto,Tekken,or soul calibur games

    • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

As long as Namco Bandai doesn’t expect something ridiculous from the Tales franchise like international sales figures at DBZ/Naruto/COD-levels, then I can see Tales flourish as an alternative to FF.

  • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

lol the pic used in the article.

  • PrinceHeir

as long as they get to make the Tales games and easier localization.

    it’s all good :D

  • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

I hope this means they will back up the games more :D

  • http://twitter.com/diptadiptadip Pradipta Permadi

for the better of tales series i hope

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8wQURL-xG4&feature=related Kira

      True!

  • darkfox1

I hope because of this the series gets better marketing. As their other series like the Tekken games. I hope this will do the series better and a lot of good fortune :D. Which im sure it will.

  • Learii

i hope that mean more tales come to the west

  • RaikageV

Why is it tagged as “VITA”?

I think this merger could be a good thing. It could make localization easier.

  • JustThisOne

    Let’s positive thinking.

  • Raharu95

let’s all cheer for the best!

I find it very odd that Tales Studio HASN’T been a part of Namco until now. Very odd.

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

Here’s hoping this won’t translate into less or worse Tales of games in the future. Keep ‘em coming coz the series is awesome and I like ‘em the way you’ve been making ‘em NB.

  • theworldofnoboundries

While we have seen many bad response from other websites saying that this is such a bad moves from Bamco or Tales series is dead. I will just be positive and hope that this step will be for the best for the franchise seeing Tales is the only Jrpg left that i never miss playing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/trevor.nicolaysen Trevor Nicolaysen

I’ve heard this before… But that was Atlus and index holdings.

  • Kitestwinblades

Hey! That means they can throw in some Tales gimmicks into the Character creation of SCV! DO IT NAMCO!

You can seriously go crazy with weapons and customization.
Weapon and Armor replicas from something as simple as a bracer to the exact weapon. Who wouldn’t like to see those weapons made in 3D Soul Calibur style?

Also… Moar Cat suits & Gaint Pow hammers! X3
