Zelda: Skyward Sword And Super Mario 3D Land Sales Soar In U.S.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is the fast-selling Zelda game ever, according to a USA Today report. Speaking with the publication, Nintendo of America president, Reggie Fils-Aime says Skyward Sword, released for the Wii on November 20th, has sold 535,000 copies in the U.S. to date.

Meanwhile, Super Mario 3D Land on the Nintendo 3DS is seeing similar success. That game, released on November 11th, has sold 500,000 copies to date, making it the fastest-selling portable Mario game in the series’ history.

3D Land also had a significant impact on Nintendo 3DS sales upon its release. Nintendo of America say that 3DS sales have increased by 325% as of last week, compared to the week before Super Mario 3D Land’s release.

Fils-Aime also says he believes Fortune Street (known as Itadaki Street in Japan) will do “quite well” during the holidays. Fortune Street is a Monopoly-style board game for the Wii, featuring Mario and Dragon Quest characters. It’s slated for release on December 5th.

Well, nothing I wouldn’t expect. Skyward Sword is, in my opinion, the best Zelda ever, hands down. I’m LOVING IT!! Currently going through Lanayru Desert.

    • Gatchaman1

Is there horse riding exploration in Skyward Sword?

      • Shinji Kazuya

I don’t know but I think there isn’t. Only bird riding exploration.

I’m glad Zelda was able to beat out the competition from Wii’s other big holiday hitters

  • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

Wow, congrats to the Zelda series and Nintendo! It’s fantastic that a franchise over 20 years old can keep growing and building momentum!

  • Natat

Those are some well-deserved sales indeed, these games are just amazing.

Haven’t played 3D Land yet but Skyward Sword, to me, represents the direction I’d always secretly hoped the 3D Zeldas would take.  I like that the outdoor areas are more like secret-packed mini dungeons than sprawling expanses of nothingness, as was the trend in games in like Ocarina and Twilight.  Ocarina could at least blame some of Hyrule Field’s vacancy on the technical limitations of the N64, and the fact that the game did so many other things right did well to make this excusable.  For Twilight Princess, though, I feel like having a gaping central hub field served no real purpose, and it was a mark against a game that couldn’t have afforded any more marks against it.  Skyward Sword, some 30 hours and 5 dungeons in, is a dazzling return to form.  It feels a lot closer to the older 2D games and the handheld titles, which is a very good thing to me.

now if only FPS games sales could plummet

then I would be a happy gamer

    • SetzerGabbiani

I don’t know if FPS sales will decrease that much, but hopefully the tide will be stemmed a bit from oversaturation.  It’s like 2-d platformers in the 90′s.

      • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

And when pretty much everyone was making a JRPG in the 90s. Including Activision.

    • JustThisOne

Or how about just FPS games that are more varied? I feel like they’re starting to write themselves into a corner by making them all about world war and nuclear activity. What could possibly be even more epic than that?

I feel like there needs to be more stealth based FPSs. Something smaller scale.

      • http://www.facebook.com/jstack Jon Stachewicz

Or just ones with different settings/tones.  Bulletstorm was a wonderful, comedy-charged take on the genre.

        • Gatchaman1

          What happened to Galgun

    • Luna Kazemaru

      No

  • JustThisOne

Sounds great, but I really really really don’t think that Fortune Street will do that great. Not that I don’t think it would sell at all. I just don’t think it’ll be anywhere near the numbers of any other Mario games.

…And here I am, being such a mardy bum. Congratulations, Nintendo, you really did well. :D

    • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

Advertisement works. There has been plenty of it on website ads and even television commercials so I think it may do somewhat well.

      • JustThisOne

:O I haven’t seen any ads. But yeah, you’ve got a point. I’d love to be proven wrong, since I personally love Fortune Street-type games.

        • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

I saw a commercial for it on cartoon network and nick. I was surprised it got one. lol

          • Barrylocke89

Wow, Fortune Street got a commercial? That’s really cool. I hope that game does well, I love mario, and monopoly, AND Dragon Quest. Plus it has wifi support.

Once again proof that 3DS is bound to succeed yet these silly people keep saying the system is doomed. Please stop fooling yourselves and accept Nintendo isn’t going third party. You want to play Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and Smash Bros? Get a Nintendo system. Simple as that. There simply isn’t enough of you Nintendo doomsday prophets for the systems to fail.

Wii U and 3DS will sell well. Problem haters?

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

There aren’t too many Nintendo doomsday prophets on this site, at least every time I read here.  Not even sure there are console wars here aside from port begging.  We are such a harmless community. lol  Until a Tales article shows up.  =:X

      • JustThisOne

        Or DmC, or Megaman. :P

        • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

          Or Monster Hunter. :p

        • Luna Kazemaru

you forgot valkyria chronicles aswell. (╬ ಠ益ಠ) ▄︻▇▇〓〓

    • aoihana

Honestly, I don’t know what haters your referring to, well, actually I do, but a few don’t really warrant such a reaction!

Like @Kuronoa:disqus said, it may seem like there’s an awful lot of doom and gloom for Nintendo, but it’s actually the very same people hitting every article they can, it’s actually an illusion! (*゚ロ゚)

There aren’t too many in plain sight, but every now and then there are a few articles that are sensitive to a few people, with reason, I suppose, but apart from that, we’re all a big nice community, or so I like to think! (◕‿◕✿)

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Colin-Tosh/1662494377 Colin Tosh

I have seen people here as well but I know what you mean. This is a nicer community (like CVG). Which is why I prefer to post here and there. Because its easier to meet nice people like yourself.

        • aoihana

That’s the spirit! Like any community, we all have our moments, but we get passed them and learn from each other. That’s why I like posting here, too. Such nice folk! Welcome! (。´∀`)ノ

  • aoihana

It warms my heart that Nintendo is doing so well after their hiccups! (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)

    Fight Nintendo! O(≧∇≦)O

I know Ishaan assured before, but I still hope Mario Kart 7 does even better! I hope my copy really does ships by the 1st, so I can play with all of you sooner than later! (◕‿◕✿)

  • sinGestalt

Well damn, huzzah Nintendo! Gotta love seeing stories like this when there’s so much hate spewed out from other places, not here! Which is a much welcome change. Now.. to finally get to playing these games >.>

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nick-Tetlow/1301633575 Nick Tetlow

    Good on Nintendo.

Hopefully this means i won’t have to deal with naysayers anymore.

    (I don’t mean you guys, you’re cool)

  • http://zerodestinypro.blogspot.com/ Zero_Destiny

No real surprise. Both games are amazingly good and both are major franchises after all. I bought both of them this month (and a 3DS too). Have not regretted any of these purchases; I’m really happy with these games. Both games felt like a nice breath of fresh air for their franchises.

Mario 3D Land is a 3D Mario game, there is no doubt about that but it also feels so much like a 2D game. It’s hard to explain but the gap between the two feels almost non-existent while playing it, it’s very cool. Plus this game has the best 3D I’ve seen outta any 3DS game. I’ve only played like 4 3DS games though so I’m not really an expert but the 3D for Mario has put the other games’ 3D to shame. It’s amazing looking in 3D.

Skyward Sword is just golden too. Very streamlined but has so much to do still, kinda like the Pokémon Black & White of the Zelda series. Quite honestly I don’t want to go back in the case of Skyward Sword. I was playing Zelda on the 3DS the other day and that’s when it hit me. I just realized truly how fresh Skyward Sword is. It’s hands down the best way to play Zelda now. There’s no going back! At least if you ask me. Anyways these are both great games and I recomend them easily to anyone who owns or is thinking about owning the systems. I’m glad to see they’re doing good in the sales too. They earned it.

    • kylehyde

Actually I’m kinda surprised with both cases. The last zelda games hadn’t exactly succesful on short term, however is good to know that they sold that number in a short span of time. About super mario 3d land, well the last 3D (3d graphics not stereotopic 3d) mario (galaxy2) didn’t do it to well in their first month, on the other hand the 2D marios really sold a lot on their respective months, however is good to know that this title is really working on their porpuse, selling the 3DS and making the people interested on the 3D marios.

On the rest I’m agree with you, super mario 3D land has really put the quality standard about how the 3D (both senses) has to be on the 3DS. Is good to see that great titles are having good sales.

      • http://zerodestinypro.blogspot.com/ Zero_Destiny

I didn’t know about Twilight Princesses’ sales, that’s interesting. But on a personal note Super Mario Galaxy 2 was a great game and I’m totally glad they made it but it just felt too soon. We got Super Mario Galaxy 1, then The New Super Mario Bros, then like 4 and 1/2 months later Super Mario Galaxy 2. I was all Mario-ed out by then. lol I’m not really a big sales tracking kind of guy but I figure if anyone else was like me maybe that could have something to do with it?

But I’m still not surprised to be honest. lol Mario 3D Land is pretty much THE game a lot of us we’re waiting for. It should of been a launch title. (I’m glad they took their time with it though since it’s so good). And releasing it in the Holiday season and what’s more as a bundle with the 3DS system itself was perfect. The timing is just too good for it to not sell. (imo)

Pretty much the same for Skyward Sword (if you were to ask me), it’s holiday season release will probably help a lot and the bundle with the Wiimote was definitely one of the best ideas Nintendo had. Not a lot of people I know who bought Skyward Sword had Motion Plus and weren’t going to buy it because of that. But then I told them all about the bundle and that’s what they all went out and got. :) It also helps that my Gamestop had a big display for the game with a crap ton of the bundles. Also Skywad Sword had a lot of word of mouth, at least with the people I know. And these guys aren’t really the “gamer” type. They didn’t even know about the bundle or anything. But to them Skyward Sword was “The last hurrah for the Wii” and is going to be the way they end the Wii off.

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Thats a confusing paragraph, so the 325% sales increase of 3DS was due to Black Friday and new bundles, while the sales increase of 49% was because of anticipation of Super Mario 3D Land, did I read that right?

I wonder if 500K sales is enough to get these Ninty titles in the top 5 of the game sales this month…

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

I believe what they meant is that the week 3D Land released, sales increased by 49% over the week prior to that. And then, last week (ie; Black Friday, like you said), sales increased 325% over the week before 3D Land.

  • Solomon_Kano

That’s great. All but dead and the Wii can still rake in a half-million copies on some software. I’m also glad that 3D Land did well.

Really, I’m glad that the holidays have been good for Nintendo so far overall. Now let’s see how well they do over Christmas.

    • gustave154

its pretty sad that the wii have to die so soon though…

      • Solomon_Kano

Yea, it really is. That’s the price of Nintendo trying to revolutionize control without keeping everything else in line with this gen’s other systems though. It’s hard for publishers to support it in the same manner they do 360 and PS3.

  • http://www.facebook.com/wahyudilestadi Wahyudi Lestadi

Yes, so fast, that even I cannot get any of those Zelda bundle … many stores run out and the price is rocketing high …

  • Gatchaman1

If they feel Fortune Street will do well why the hell didn’t they localize the DS game years ago?

    • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.dickenson1 Shawn SomethingOtaku Dickenson

      no clue..

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Priorities, I think. The reason they’re looking at Fortune Street now is probably:

      a) Their ties to Square/Dragon Quest
      b) The Wii games they’re releasing this holiday are the kinds that appeal to families

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Roberto-Armando-Iraheta/775564143 Roberto Armando Iraheta

Congratulations on Nintendo’s part. It was about time they released something of worth on their platforms.

  • 128bitigor

Wait, didn’t the operation rainfall call to boycott Zelda?
