    but kenshin looks weird…

    • aoihana

He’s Kenshin 2.0, he may not look like his old self, but personally, I think he looks good! (●´∀`)ノ♡

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3ITUZUKPZYUV2VUCVXUW3DVO6Y AJ

It seems Kenshin is making a bit of a revival in the public eye.  No kidding, I actually decided to watch the first and second season, then read the real third season in the manga.  I did this rather recently, about a year ago and I’m glad I did.

But now, the series is getting a live action movie and a retelling of an arc.  What happened?  Did the show re-air like DBZ?

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

It doesnt seem like it stands up to modern anime? Will characters have magical skills? Right now this looks comparable to what Im reading in the Flame of Recca manga (only on chapter 18 or so), so I have some interest in seeing Rurouni Kenshin for the first time ever.

    • Solomon_Kano

Magical skills… no, not really. The series is realistic. Or, comparatively so, I would say.

      • SalomeHarras

Being able to vaporize rock with your fist is pretty “magical” in my eyes.

        • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Thats more like it, the other posts were turning me off from it if it were just regular dudes fighting with regular swords doing regular things.

Is this too regular and boring for you?

They were slightly super-human, but they don’t shoot fireballs or anything like Dragonball, it wasn’t anything goes.  The fights were pretty exciting and amazing, also meaningful, people fighting for their ideals and conviction in a period of turmoil transitioning to a new era, you could learn a thing or two about Jpn history too.

          • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Wow, that actually looks far from boring, looks pretty cool, especially the Amahakaru one. Tempted to peek through the manga! Thanks.

          • Aoshi00

That’s a sick move indeed. That’s what we’ve been trying to tell you all this time man, just read the manga, drop your Bleach, drop your Naruto, you won’t regret it. No one in Jpn does not know of the classic Rurouni Kenshin, even non-anime fans. People were just trying to tell you it was more grounded in reality, “relatively” speaking.

          • malek86

@tristtrist:disqus do check it out. It’s slower than Bleach or Naruto, and not something that you can just enjoy by shutting your brain off (although, yeah, some fights do get ludicrous enough), but it might still appeal to your taste for scenic battles. On the other hand, just like Naruto, the characters seem to like imparting moral lessons during their fights, so you may feel right at home.

I’d tell you to check out Yu Yu Hakusho too while you’re at it, which is a different stamp but awesome in its own way. And it has “magic”, like you say. To make an example, there’s a guy shooting flaming dragons out of his palm. It also gets ludicrous later on – must be a staple of shonen manga. I find it more appealing than Kenshin because it’s not always trying to shove some life lesson down your throat. For the most part it’s just dumb fun, like DB.

          • MisterDandylion

Briefly speaking: in general terms, it’s more realistic than most shonen mangas and it’s quite entertaining.

This is just my opinion but the only “unrealistic” parts about Ruroken are some of the stunts that are portrayed. I won’t spoil the details (Yahiko VS The Bomb-Dropping Juupon Gatana: WTF?; Kenshin VS The Sword Collector Mercenary: SO ludicruos IT’S AWESOME ) because you must give this timeless story a shot, Tsuna.  With my sincerest desires: stop being a sucker for Naruto, Bleach and Reborn! and make yourself a favor, man! :)

          • KyoyaHibari

Realistic swordplay doesn’t automatically make it worse than any fictitious, magical fighting, that’s like saying if there was a fight in DBZ where Goku landed 1 Kamehameha and ended the fight it is automatically better than Kenshin clashing swords with someone with fluid grace, power and speed, although some RuroKen fights are borderline fantasy, there’s still a somewhat realistic science and logic behind how some of their attacks work, for example, Kenshin fights Shishio in this very arc, and at first it seems as though his sword can just spontaneously catch fire for his attacks, but he actually has some highly explosive gunpowder in his fists which flies up the sword when he swings and the friction of the blade with the force of his swing creates an ephemeral tornado of fire around the blade when he strikes (or something along those lines IIRC).

Edit: Better yet, if you do wish to see the fight for yourself, I found this video, it’s a condensed version of the fight, I believe it’s the Animax dub though so watch with discretion about the sound, the dub is kinda bad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bufL1Vk8Kxs

        • Solomon_Kano

          I’d agree. See: “comparatively so”.

      • malek86

Well… the Kyoto arc, maybe (ok, aside from the giant dude). The Jinchuu arc not so much. The fights get ludicrous, and the whole almost-real historical setting is apparently forgotten.

I think the problem with Kenshin is that it follows Hokuto no Ken quite closely: a great first half, a not-so-great second half. No wonder that most people only remember the first arc (and, well, it doesn’t help that the second arc was never animated).

I might say that it’s a bit more “realistic” than other shonen anime, but the presence of weird punching techniques and guys who can run faster than your eye can see, still puts it in the “magical” department. I’d consider something like Slam Dunk realistic, although the focus is different (though POT and other series show that sport manga can fall for that too).

Is there even any realistic shonen series? It would probably get boring soon.

        • Solomon_Kano

Yea, you’re right. There are quite a few absurd moments but, considering he’s named after a KHR character, I figured I’d say comparatively so to cover all bases. Ridiculous as some of the moves get, it never quite hits Bleach or Naruto territory.

I think a realistic shonen series might be an oxymoron lol. Wait. I take that back. I’m currently watching Sket Dance and there’s not really anything too crazy in there. The most “unreal” it gets is that the main character has amazing powers of concentration — and that’s definitely tame for its demographic lol. It’s a shonen series too.

    • aoihana

Rurouni Kenshin isn’t about magical skills, spells, or enchantments, it’s about sheer swordsmanship! When you’re losing a battle here, you don’t retreat via a fancy teleportation technique, you freakin’ die! (*^ワ^*)

But you should give it a try, it’s pretty awesome! (◕‿◕✿)

      • SalomeHarras

“Die”?  I’m not so sure about that.  How many of the characters actually “died” in the series?

“Sheer swordsmanship?”  Again, I’m not so sure about that…maybe it was like that in the beginning, but even during the Kyoto Arc, it got progressively more and more ridiculous as it went on.

If you were talking about the first OVA series, ok, I’d believe you.

        • aoihana

“Die”?  I’m not so sure about that.  How many of the characters actually “died” in the series?

I meant in general, as in, if you’re gravely injured in battle, you either fight it out, or die trying. You can’t summon a barrier and flee from battle proclaiming to come again.

“Sheer swordsmanship?”  Again, I’m not so sure about that…maybe it was like that in the beginning, but even during the Kyoto Arc, it got progressively more and more ridiculous as it went on.

Again, I meant in general. Compared to a lot of shounen anime, it’s relatively sheer swordsmanship, as in, no Getsuga Tenshou’s, Senbonzakura’s, Bankai’s, or any of that stuff.

Kind of like Gintama, except Gintama is a little out of this world, so it may not be a good example, but it’s swordplay is what I’m talking about here.

Not that magical elements is bad, it’s just that like @Solomon_Kano:disqus  said, in comparison to a lot of anime/manga, Rurouni Kenshin is more realistic

Although, realistic is a slight overstatement, in regards to shounen manga in general, Rurouni Kenshin included. Specifically, it’s physics could be a little ridiculous, but hey, what anime isn’t! (◕‿◕✿)

          • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

When I watched the anime when I was 12 or something, I thought Shishio having gunpowder in his bandages and igniting them on point blank is the coolest thing ever. A couple of years later, I learned that it’d blow up his hands. BAD.

    • shion16

Gin san doesnt have magical skills, he doesnt even have a special move and hes awesome

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

Though he does try and do the kamehameha :3 ( but yeah not every main character needs super special magic moves, just good old Samurai action)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1769064526 Vivian Mai

If you’re seeing Rurouni Kenshin for the first time ever, don’t start with any of the OVAs…watch the TV series, read the manga and get caught up!

And Rurouni Kenshin is regarded as one of the best mangas & animes ever~ There are uber awesome sword skills rather than magic though!

    • Aoshi00

Don’t mean to offend any Flame of Recca fans here, if there are any… it was crap for lack of a better word, compared to Rurouni Kenshin, a timeless classic.  Recca tried to copy Yu Yu Hakusho and it was nowhere near as good.  Azai Nobuyuki was a complete hack.

      • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

Hahaha that was a bold move, Aoshi, but unfortunately I’m in the same boat as you.  *cough*MAR*cough*

        • Aoshi00

When I saw Flame of Recca and Kenshin in the same sentence I kinda cringed, but it’s Tsuna lol..  I was going to mention MAR *choke*.. it’s amazing he’s still employed by Sunday at all.. I hope he really gets to read Kenshin in its entirely some point in the future..

    • SalomeHarras

I think the Kenshin OVA series (at least the first one) stands the test of time. I think the tv series is a little more shaky (especially when you look at it as a whole rather than just the Kyoto arc, which is what most fans think of), but I wouldn’t say it’s bad.

I personally think either is better than Flame of Recca though.

    • KyoyaHibari

Flame of Recca is pretty garbage, very cliche and substandard, RuroKen is a timeless classic, you don’t need over the top abilities and magic to make a shonen great at all, (not to say the fights aren’t dynamic, heck, they are spectacular!) like Aoshi said, drop Naruto & Bleach, pick up RuroKen, it’s better than most of the ongoing shonen today.

      “Will characters have magical skills?”

AHAHAHA! Magical skills!!! XD XD XD

      I’m sorry. I had to laugh. :P

      • z_merquise

        You’re cruel, dood.

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

Huh?! You have no right to say that to me, you freakin’ penguin! KNOW YOUR PLACE!!!

          • Alexis Matthews

            ._.
            You’re overreacting again…..

          • WilliamJasper

            That’s Etna for you. :P

    • WilliamJasper

“I have some interest in seeing Rurouni Kenshin for the first time ever.”

Oh…..It’s your first time ever? Such a classic should not be missed. You should watch the anime now.

  • Solomon_Kano

Gotta agree with @facebook-737323208:disqus , Kenshin looks a bit off. Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1769064526 Vivian Mai

The style of the animation seems good so far, but Kenshin…maybe his hair is too bright…? He DOES seem a bit off…

But it’s more Kenshin, so I’m happy! Can’t wait!

  • shion16

    Awesome i love Ruroken…..wait………….NOOOOOOO!!!
THE ART STYLE!! IT LOOKS LIKE THE BORING OVAS!!!!

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

You thought the OVAs were boring? Dude…I mean, yeah, it wasn’t fighting the entire time, but it was a great story from the start to end.

      • shion16

Its a great story but it wasnt well told in the ovas, the manga is tons of times better.

        • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

I definitely agree with that last statement right there. If anyone really wants to get into the RuroKen story, manga > anime.

          • shion16

            totally agree

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Farid-Belkacemi/1073052585 Farid Belkacemi

EPIC ! More kenshin = more awesomeness, count me in ;)

  • Vino (Tim N)

Its looking good, I’m really liking the subtle colors they have going in this one. I wouldn’t say it looks like the OVA style at all.

  • Aoshi00

Suzukaze Mayo and Ikeda Masanori still sound awesome as Kenshin and Shishio (was worried Mayo wouldn’t be up to it).. Sakurai Tomo sounds a lot more mature as Misao but very cool (the line was classic)..  I still have my doubt this new 2-part OVA is being told from the PoV of Misao as many have said, every English site has been saying that but I found no Jpn site mention of such setting… was it due to a mistranslation?

I dig the art style too, it’s not as anime-ish as the TV series (eyes are not as big) but not as ultra-realistic as Tsuioku or Seisou-hen OVAs, I think it’s just right :) Aoshi and Saitou look great :) Hoping for really good animation since this is just a two-parter and would be premiered in theater first.. having original cast to boot, unlike the new Saint Seiya game *.*… and part 1 is showing in the theater in 2 weeks!

    • http://www.facebook.com/AshCrimsonTJL Theofratus ‘Geese’ Lester

Now as for the others who’ve voiced their counterparts, I’m sure they’ll make their return.  If they can do that with Dragon Ball Kai, I’m sure they’ll do the same for this.

      • Aoshi00

yep, it’s all original cast, except probably Suzuoki Hirotaka/Saitou since he’s no longer w/ us…  DB Kai had most of the old cast for the main chars, but for secondary chars like Nappa, Dodoria, Zarbon, Team Ginyu, they were all replaced.

        • http://www.facebook.com/AshCrimsonTJL Theofratus ‘Geese’ Lester

Ah, right.  Forgot he passed away.  I was saddened by his death when I first heard about it.

  • Shogunreaper

    Only a 2 part ova?

    Sigh..

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

the arc was already fully animated. why should they drag it out?

      • Shogunreaper

Why should they bother redoing it at all?

I mean if they are going to remake it might as well not half ass it.

        • Aoshi00

Original Gundam movie triology, Zeta Gundam move triolgy?  Do they really need to remake all ~50 eps for each series?  It’s more like a celebration of a classic.

          • Shogunreaper

No they didn’t need to remake zeta, and butchering it into 3 movies was just retarded.

          • Aoshi00

It was a digest, for the fans who were alrdy familiar w/ the original or for those who haven’t the chance to see the original, Jpn fans have the chance to see this on the big silver screen too.  Just like the 4 new EVA movies instead of remaking 26 ep series + 2 movies.  No one said anything about this being a complete remake, not everything needs to be remade.  If you don’t like it, no one forces you to buy or watch them.  For me it would be a trip down the memory lane hearing the same cast reprising their roles after 15 years, and just see how the same scenes are presented differently. No need to be all negative about this. If you want to relive the exact original experience, why not go back to watch the old series again?

          • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

It’s more of a re-imagination than a remake. I knew I released several body fluids when I saw Zeta transforming in high resolution. Omg, that was memorable. Same goes for Macross F, Eva,  and the 3 Gundam movies.

Edit: I didn’t notice Aoshi mentioned the original Gundam movies. My bad

  • http://talesattbokmph.wordpress.com/ Setsuryuu (TBOkmph)

Ah, I saw it on ANN the other day. I really liked how Misao looks. Everyone seems a bit older in this version… And bulkier. Even Kenshin. That’s weird, he was always a skinny small “dude looks like a lady” that had incredible drawing sword skills and unmatchable speed. The way he is drawn there make it seems he will drop his sword and settle all by fists like a king of the street fighters!

    And that’s wrong.

Oh well, the movie itself might be good though. After all Kyoto arc was full of win.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

Still wish they just remake the anime over (hell Gundam Seed is get an HD remaster….why?!!! ugh) well whatever i’ll be checking it out but i’ll mostly be re-reading the manga again~

    • eilegz

what? one thing its releasing HD content of old stuff (mostly upscale of what we currrent have) and other its REMAKING the whole thing adding new stuff

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UYNL44GEJ7BEGB76JT42XDLYEI Christopher

I wonder if this is an attempt to see if there is still interest with the “Kenshin” property so maybe they are looking into finally giving us the third arc of the manga we never truly got?

  • http://twitter.com/Xander_VJ David García Abril

    Looks pretty cool.

    I don’t know… I don’t think Kenshin looks weird or anything.

I’m more concerned with the fact that they have to squeeze the whole Kyoto arc in a 2-episode OVA. I don’t think they will have enough time for that. :(

  • darkbartz

It looks nice, the animation looks a tad darker though. Man I loved Rurouni Kenshin, the first few anime-filler arcs were no great shakes, but they were decent. The last one though, ouch. Thinking about it is enough to make me cry on the inside.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jan-Daryll-Palanca/100000250304791 Jan Daryll Palanca

kenshin battling it out with shishio with new animation in HD = WIN!

  • doomspeller10

Only a 2-part OVA? It better be worth it, looks like it won’t be enough for Kenshin fans. I’m guessing it’s just to get them hyped for the movie.

  • TheMysticalNinja

They better make each OVA part last at least an hour. At least -_-

  • http://www.facebook.com/juan.m.m.s.mdp Juan Manuel M. Suárez

That Kenshin looks too manly for the image / persona Watsuki tried to convey. Even in the darkest parts of the manga, Kenshin always looked somewhat frail and with a hint of gentleness. The rest of the characters in the trailer looked pretty good though~.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Aunna-Terrell/100001267508146 Aunna Terrell

SETA SOJIRO~ <3 <3 <3 < But it's just stuff that I'll have to overlook when I watch the OAVs, I guess. lol (Misao's eye color is gorgeous tho! D:) And OMG, I didn't realize how much I missed Suzukaze's voice. I think I almost~ fainted when Kenshin spoke. XD (lol, please don't get me started about Sojiro's appearance.. I almost died there.)
