Beyond The Labyrinth Has Turn Based Battles, But You Don’t Choose Commands

By Spencer . December 5, 2011 . 12:01pm

Beyond The Labyrinth Has Turn Based Battles, But You Dont Choose CommandsWhile tri-Ace tends to create action oriented battle systems for their games, Beyond the Labyrinth has turn based battles. The twist is instead of selecting a command like attack, magic or item players choose the strength of the attack and the target. Attack strength changes the turn order since a powerful hit has more recovery time.

Beyond the Labyrinth also has three elements, which are named after rocks-paper-scissors terms in Japanese. If you hit a scissors-type enemy with a rock attack the damage will be released in the air. The next character, friend or foe, can absorb the damage and recover HP. Exploiting weaknesses has a tradeoff, but players can also tweak the turn order by using different attack strengths to block enemies from healing themselves.

These videos demo the battle system and HP absorbtion mechanic. Thanks for sharing them Suicunesol!

Beyond the Labyrinth comes out on January 19 in Japan.

umm what? so it plays like fate/Extra? or something new? WTF I was hopping it played like Ico damnit but I’ll give it a try if it comes to the states

    • Solomon_Kano

Like ICO… you mean like moving and fighting in real-time? Because I thought they said a while back that you aren’t actually controlling the girl. She’s supposed to be your guide or something, I think. So that was always out of the question, unless I heard wrong.

      • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.dickenson1 Shawn SomethingOtaku Dickenson

yeah the girl is a Guide of some sort  and its  ( first person)

        • Solomon_Kano

Ah. So I  did hear right. Ok, cool. So yea, somewhat unfortunately for you, it won’t be like ICO.

          • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.dickenson1 Shawn SomethingOtaku Dickenson

lol Its fine  the game play looks fun I’m sold

          • Solomon_Kano

            Oh. Great then!

    • Suicunesol

Why would you think that? People were comparing the style and atmosphere to that of Ico–not the gameplay.

      • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.dickenson1 Shawn SomethingOtaku Dickenson

because it looks like Ico type of game

The UI of the second screen could use work, I wish more resources were dedicated to the upper display.

No thanks.  Having everything on the bottom touch screen works well in turn based RPGs, no need to clutter the action on top especially with 3D effects.

      • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

By dedicate more resources, I guess I meant more towards enhancing the graphics, I like minimal to completely absent HUDs.

        • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Shouldn’t we be on the same side then?  The bottom screen as the HUD works well towards purifying the action on screen.  It isn’t easy to make a RPG with small amount of HUD if that is what you are implying.

    • punkchobit

I agree with kuronoa. The 3d screen is for the action. The touch screen is for the hud and ui

Love the minimal approach, hopefully it doesn’t become one-note.

Sounds simple enough. I hope the battle system has a brisk pace, at least. Oh, and I also hope for a Western release or supreme 3DS hack.

The preview picture to this article looked like Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep’s Aqua. I was totally about to be psyched haha.

  • Solomon_Kano

That’s… interesting. Well, I look forward to seeing it in motion all the more now.

  • Suicunesol

You’re not going to post the battle videos from youtube?

Didn’t know those existed. Thanks for sharing them!

    • Solomon_Kano

You, sir (or madame), are awesome.

Am I the only one who likes that box/cube/whatever-looking effect when your character attacks? It looks cool.

  • nyobzoo

probably more to it but right now that battle system looks really underwhelming. Which is disappointing considering Tri-Ace is known for great battle
    systems in their RPGs

    • fayt255

Yeah I kind of agree but still Tri-Ace has never let me down so far so I hope this gets localized.

  • puchinri

Huh, intriguing. With everything shown already, I’m sold anyway, but it’s nice to see that in a way, it’s still a very tri-Ace battle system. Looks interesting.

  • kenichi_san

intriguing indeed, i love checking out new/different battlesystems. :)

  • AzureNova

Now this is something different! Sold! Now just have to wait for it to get localized.

  • Joanna

I like it. It’s really simple but has so much room for strategy. Now we just need Konami to announce this for the west~
