Take A Closer Look At Pokémon + Nobunagas Ambition

4Gamer have put up several pictures of the Pokémon + Nobunaga’s ambition booth at Jump Festa. If you’re just getting caught up, yes, that game is indeed a crossover between the two franchises.

4Gamer report the game is being developed jointly with Tecmo Koei games and The Pokémon Company. Here’s a closer look at the booth and some screenshots:

Anyone who isn’t bonering over this is pretty much definitely a bad person.  When I first heard of a surprise announcement I was thinking it was JUST gonna be Pokemon Gray, and now?  Now I am cumming everywhere.  Can you feel it?

    Edit: CAN YOU FEEL IT???????????????

I would play this game so hard.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Aunna-Terrell/100001267508146 Aunna Terrell

lol, I haven’t played a Pokemon since Yellow. I’d buy and play the crap outta this game. XD

  • KyoyaHibari

Wow, now THIS is something to get excited about! What an unorthodox mashup, a mildly popular Japanese strategy game series (I think) with the global phenomenon of Pokemon, but yet it actually sounds like a great premise. Integrating the popular monster breeding franchise into the sometimes surreal stories about ancient Japan, it’s like Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce with the magical gate lions or whatever, it will be interesting to see how Pokemon can drastically alter the way war plays out in this simulation as opposed to the normal horse mounts, pandas and other odd beasts from the Dynasty & Samurai Warriors series. Putting together popular monsters with the majestic, chaotic and chivalrous samurai of the Sengoku era will be quite a spectacle! DAY 1 BABY DAY 1!!!!!!

  • Tom_Phoenix

In this day and age of leaks and constantly reused concepts, it’s extremely refreshing to see a game announcement that takes everyone COMPLETELY by suprise.  :D

That aside, as a person who’s grown to love turn-based tactics games, I really like the idea. Infact, I hope they end up localising it for non-Japanese markets. It would give the genre some much needed boost and attention here in the West.

Also, for people who keep saying why this isn’t on the 3DS, the DS isn’t dead yet. It’s being slowly replaced by the 3DS, sure, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be more games for the DS for at least a while longer. The GBA was replaced by the DS relatively quickly, yet it still saw games being released for it as late as 2007. Plus, the 3DS is backwards compatible with the DS, which translates to an even bigger potential audience for developers.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

It’s funny how Pokémon can fit into pretty much any genre and still sell it better than any other brand, isn’t it? Rogue-likes are possibly the most niche games out there, and yet, the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games sell pretty decently!

    • OverlordZetta

      Exactly.

You’ve got it right on all fronts. Well said, friend.

    • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

I dont know it seems odd to do it as a DS game though or have no 3DS version.  Assuming people do like me, then one would just stop buying games on an old console and just focus on games on the successor, assuming its not available digitally. Why would one play a game that doesnt take advantage of the hardware?

      • Tom_Phoenix

“I dont know it seems odd to do it as a DS game thought or have no 3DS version. ”

Why is it odd? The platform is cheap to develop for, it has a sizeable audience, the system is still selling (albeit not as much as before) and the 3DS is backwards compatible with DS games.  Overall, there are still reasons to develop for the DS and, as long as the system is making money for Nintendo, it pays off for them to continue supporting it to at least a limited capacity.

“Assuming people do like me, then one would just stop buying games on an old console and just focus on games on the successor, assuming its not available digitally.”

Most people aren’t like you, Tsunayoshi. Most people aren’t early adopters, but wait until a system either becomes cheaper or has a sizeable enough library of quality titles. Infact, a significant chunk of hardware sales occur late into platform’s lifecycle,  including after a successor has already been released. Heck, the PS2 is STILL selling on a regular basis to this very day (5 years after the release of the PS3), even though its only supported by sports/licensed game makers nowadays.

“Why would one play a game that doesnt take advantage of the hardware?”

Beacuse people don’t play games for the hardware, but for the software. Infact, most consumers view hardware as an expensive OBSTACLE, which they only begrudgingly pass in order to play the games they are interested in. This is why killer apps are important; consumers will only buy a system if they think the games on it are quality enough to justify the expense.

Also, while making good use of the hardware CAN result in quality titles, it’s not by any means mandatory. For example, both New Super Mario Bros. games are some of the best selling games on their respective platforms and many people bought a DS and/or Wii in order to play them, yet they didn’t do squat with the touchscreen/motion controls.

I’m a little surprised honestly, because I wasn’t expecting such a thing with Pokemon but I am intrigue. I like to see where this is going, plus I’ve played the Samurai Chronicles game on the 3DS so I’m up-to-date with the Warring State stories (but somehow I lost the game, case and all, and it’s ticking me off! I haven’t max out any of the characters yet on the Affection gauge! I kinda wish you can date someone… I don’t know, but I like having the option when your the MC of the story).

Though Eevee again for a Starter? I don’t mind, it gives me a good idea to think which evolution to pick at start, but I’ve always been particular fond of the Fire-Type Pokemon so Flareon is a given at least.

However I would LOVE to have Charmeleon as my partner, he’s my favorite Pokemon of all out of the Charmander evolution tree (my favorite Starter and partner from Red and Blue… good times, good times). Seeing Bidoff with the Player Character you can recruit more Pokemon, which is good and obvious as you have to collect and raise Pokemon.

I wonder if you are your own General of your own part of the country or such? Or you and your team under the commander of another?

I’m really excited now! Please localized this! I will buy and play the heck of it! I love Pokemon and this crossover looks promising!

  • Testsubject909

    My brain just broke…

    • SerendipityX

Can’t be as broken as mine since I want this game and have zero love for Pokemon and don’t know what the heck Nobonaga’s ambition is…

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

Ya know…….I couldn’t have asked for anything less. I see nothing wrong with this idea. It’s fun to see the history of Pokemon within Feudal Era Japan. You can look at this as yet another Pokemon spin-off game, but 2,000+ years ago…and with Mewtwo in it. lol

I’m anticipating this game with great heights and can’t wait to see the crossovers. Yukimura + Blaziken? Tadakatsu + whatever’s considered the strongest legendary Pokemon.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jtylerroddy John Tyler Roddy

I don’t even like pokemon and am considering buying this.

  • Altoire

Who’s the one with articuno? and who’s the one with jigglypuff? o_o

    • theworldofnoboundries

I think the one with Articuno is Mitsuhide Akechi while the one with Jigglypuff is Ooichi, little sister of Nobunaga.

  • RaikageV

Never played Nobunaga’s Ambition. But the screenshots look good.

  • http://twitter.com/followthereader Matt Davidson

Nope, sorry. This looks like it’s going to suck exactly as much as I thought the first time I heard the announcement. People talking about how cool it’s going to be to have a giant Pokemon army sadden me; to me that’s completely alien to the whole concept of Pokemon, I can’t think of anything WORSE than a giant Pokemon army (except maybe a Pokemon game crossed with feudal Japanese strategy . . . oh wait).

I can’t imagine this possibly being released in Western territories, and that doesn’t bug me one bit. Makes it easier for me to ignore its existence.

Let’s just cross our fingers for a real Pokemon announcement in CoroCoro!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/VirusChris Christopher Nunes

Well in a few Pokemon Movies THERE were Pokemon Army that fought in a war, Lucarion and the Mystery of Mew is a perfect of this, so it isn’t too far-fetch as it sounds.

I’m actually looking forward to this game.

      • EusisLandale

Not like the main games don’t have the implications of military use of Pokemon anyway. You’ve got Surge, you’ve got police armed with pokemon, you’ve got criminal organizations armed with pokemon. All that’s changed is you’re not some random kid being dragged into thigns. Or are you? :O
Also a tactical game is the logical progression of what’s been going on. Single battles, then doubles, then triples. Might as well just skip straight up to using a full team of 6, at which point a change in battle layout is needed, so tactical combat it is. Might even let the size differences between the Pokemon come into play by how much space they take up.

Also, I really doubt that this won’t end up released in the west. Pokemon is insanely popular, there is absolutely no reason for them to not do so and plenty of reason to do so. I eagerly await it as well.

        • http://twitter.com/followthereader Matt Davidson

I disagree that tactical strategy is an obvious evolution of Pokemon’s gameplay. Despite double/triple battles, the core of the series has always been about raising individual Pokemon to a certain level and altering their movepools/stats to fit within your own playstyle. The series has been closely focused on the interaction between a Trainer and a single Pokemon at a time. Having a ‘team’ is simply a way of rounding out which individuals you’re raising. To command a giant army of Pokemon loses that sense of individually training them. One of the greatest joys of Pokemon is pitting a monster against its identical-looking counterpart and seeing how their stats differ through different training metods. Is that really going to happen if you have a thousand Blaziken Flamethrowering all over the place? You’re just going to have carbon copy Pokemon ad infinitum leaping all over the screen.

I realise people are getting excited and don’t want to trample all over that; I’m obviously in a minority with my viewpoint here and I hope you all enjoy the game. But for me it’s just not POKEMON. It’s a big old strategy game where the sprites look like Pokemon, but it’s no more Pokemon than a Mario sprite in the middle of Suikoden would be a Mario game.

          • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.dickenson1 Shawn SomethingOtaku Dickenson

Never said it even better then that my friend

          • EusisLandale

And do you have proof that you specifically are going to be using a giant army? If you go ahead and take a look at the trailer, you’ll see that the fights are actually pretty light on unit count. This doesn’t look like some RTS or anything, it seems more like an SRPG, which typically keep the unit count fairly low, at least on your side. Then again, haven’t seen too much on the gameplay since we’re not seeing both screens. Unit count seen is low one way or the other though.
At worst I foresee the occasional 6vs6+ fights, being the logical step forward from the chained trainer fights of the normal games. Maybe even a 12vs12+ with half your team being AI allies, again a logical step forward from the double trainer battles when you’re not alone.

    • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.dickenson1 Shawn SomethingOtaku Dickenson

Pokemon game crossed with feudal Japanese strategy is really odd and I don’t see it selling very well in the states a Hunting game would have been a better crossover

    • OverlordZetta

If by completely alien to the concept of Pokemon you mean it’s really just using the exact concept of Pokemon in a slightly different way to match a different type of gameplay, then yes, I agree with you.

If you meant the thing you actually said though, then I have nothing but pity for you.

      • http://twitter.com/followthereader Matt Davidson

Save your pity for people who need it :D

Here’s the thing. Pokemon is aobut collecting. It’s about forging connections with the creatures you collect. It’s about discovering new things about them. It’s about training them to be the best. It’s about improving their stats to grow them into their potential. It’s about young people going into the world for the first time and having their best friends beside them. It’s about going on a journey and being the best you can be. It’s about finely-tuned battles, using the best attributes of each individual Pokemon to push victory in your favour.

In Nobunaga’s Ambition, “the player must allocate resources to raise a capable military force,
provide a productive economy to support both military and civilian
expansion and support the peasants in order to sustain their respect and loyalty.”

Looking at that second description, it baffles me how anyone looks at that and says ‘oh wow that sounds kinda like the concept of Pokemon, good fit’.

But this is all just my opinion. People want to play Feudal Pokemon Conquer Japan, then I hope that they make this an awesome game that those people can enjoy. But I just hope that this is being developed by a subsidiary team, and there’s a main team hard at work on some real Pokemon games :D

  • Souji Tendou

I’m sorry Siliconera for being rude here but, I have to say this is the stupidest crossover idea, EVER!

  • MagDX

Wow….Just wow, Not sure how to feel about this, But hey, I can give this game a shot when it comes out. I mean, Its not like Kingdom Hearts looked like the greatest idea ever when it came out..

  • deathman00789

    Mewtwo looks like a BOSS

  • SuigetsuHiramura

The Pokemon part looks pretty good…the other part, not so much.  I’ve never even heard of Nobunaga before ^_^

    • XerosBeat

He’s a really famous deceased warlord in Japan, along with Shingen and probably some other people who will be featured in the game.

  • Maotoujin

I’m surprised. This actually looks like pretty good, despite what I initially thought when I first heard of this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/wahyudilestadi Wahyudi Lestadi

    nobunaga never become this cute

  • http://twitter.com/GameGodZER0 Ben Sylvia

When I think about it, I kinda wish it was Pokemon + Fire Emblem instead.
    Maybe next time.

And I am so looking forward to this being a great game that sells lots of copies just to po the haters.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ronald-Bixler/100002183818350 Ronald Bixler

If that was the case, they might add in perma-death from Fire Emblem. I would  think that a pokemon’s pre-death speech would sound pretty awkward. “P… pi… ka… ch……” *Your Pikachu has fallen in battle!*

      • XerosBeat

        Noooo!! Pikachuuu!!!

      • http://twitter.com/GameGodZER0 Ben Sylvia

Well I would hope they would be like the Mystery Dungeon Pokemon and actually talk.  Then die.
If anything make it more like the Pokemon Special manga where the characters are constantly about to be killed.

    • http://twitter.com/followthereader Matt Davidson

      I’m coming out as a hater :D

BUT that doesn’t mean I want this game to do badly. I hope it sells really well and the people who buy it love it (just not so much that they scrap the whole main series altogether and spend ten years pumping out Pokemon’s Ambition!)

    • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

If it had been Pokemon + Fire Emblem, I might’ve fainted from the sheer greatness of it.

  • Kitestwinblades

    I like the presentation!

Wich Dragon type will Date Masamune have as a partner? Waiting for this game x)

  • Bunzi

I like the idea of a Pokemon RTS/ Tactical RPG game a lot, in addition to a game with a really good story for the series for once, but I wonder: how well will the Pokemon themselves be implemented into the story?

Either way, it’s good to see Gamefreak branch off into somewhere really different with the series.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Naito-Midna/100000029806268 Naito Midna

This looks really cool. I already want it.

I always wanted a Pokemon crossover. I thought Naruto, One Piece, etc. but if it’s for games I would like to see a Pokemon/Inazuma Eleven crossover, just for the hell of it, LOL! (Teikoku’s Piplups).  The Fire Emblem crssover idea sounds cool too.

Anyone had crossovers ideas for Pokemon too?

Doi. This was supposed to be in reply to someone asking for Disgaea + Pokemon, just to clarify. Not taking a swing at NIS here out of the blue.
