Tri Ace Helped Out With Final Fantasy XIII 2

Tri-Ace’s Yuichiro Kitao revealed something interesting over Twitter today. Tri-Ace staff were involved with the development of Final Fantasy XIII-2. Tri-Ace helped out on the game with aspects of game design, art and programming.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 was released in Japan this week. The U.S. and Europe will see the game on January 31st and February 3rd respectively.

So….XIII-2 could actually be good, right? I’m probably asking too much, but I’m open to that possibility and trying not to move on from XIII.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

For what I read not, the game is not that good.

Plus I hate that Noel and Serah are the only characters in your team, because the others are monster. Lightning is a dlc character I think.

      • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

I guess going the monster route wasnt to their advantage. Hopefully they do not include it for future Final Fantasy games.

        • Gatchaman1

It’s actually not bad. The problem is being forced to JUST use Noel or Serah.
They should give you the ability to  use other characters but the way they wrote the story doesn’t demand it. Also it should be  three playable human party and two monster supports imo

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1051780171 Tan Wei Lun

really? i’ve been on gamespot forums and there has been nothing but good besides one or two.

      • LynxAmali

Source? I haven’t heard any of that other than you have option of having monster party members and other characters from XIII joining at points.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

In gamefaqs they posted japanese videos and I saw the final battles and final boss (wont tell you anything about that) but  It was Serah, Noel and some monsters in the party. There are some character but they join you in certain chapters I believe, like guest. About Lightning I heard that she is a DLC with her old costume, don’t know if she join you (I didn’t see her in those videos) others said that her DLC being just a battle against her in the Coliseum.

You can asume that maybe that player prefered using monster instead of other characters. About the system, graphic and maps, the game is clearly better than XIII they said.

The true ending is horrible and the others paradox ending some seems good and other just fun D:

          • http://www.facebook.com/santd Daniel Sant

Ugh.  People on gamefaqs have no idea what they are talking about.  I’ve been on that messageboard and its a cesspool of morons and trolls. The ending isn’t horrible at all.  It fit the game perfectly, tying up the story while leaving it open ended.  People don’t even understand what happened and they are ragging on it.  Ridiculous. Even stuff they SHOULD be able to understand without knowledge of Japanese they completely misinterpret and blow out of proportion.

So thats why weve been waiting so long for Star Ocean 5?

Based on the last games from Tri Ace I played, I guess this is good that they had a helping hand, ultimately assures that I will enjoy this game beyond the main attractions.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

Star Ocean 5 and Valkyrie Profile 3 please, I been waiting for those games. Star Ocean 4 is easy to fix, they just need more interesting characters and better development on the story then just some modification in the battle or exploration (wich was good already) but the story messed up a lot.

And with Valkyrie profile, I been so desesperate that with just another side-storie like the DS one It would been fine too xD and with VP3 I want an story with Chris D: clearly that chick was a bad girl and I like that <3 I would be cool seeing think from her side and some good development of her feelings.

    • Solomon_Kano

Probably not. This likely contributed to the wait for Star Ocean 5, but the real hold up is all of the other games Tri-Ace has been doing. In the time since 4 they did Resonance of Fate, Frontier Gate, and Beyond the Labyrinth.

So hopefully they’ll get to Star Ocean 5 soon, but this likely wasn’t much of a stall on it.

      • fayt255

Star Ocean 5 may not come until next gen. since their has only been one Star Ocean game per generation.

        • Solomon_Kano

Well, there’s a first time for everything. I’d be fine if it doesn’t happen this gen though.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XOM34SO6OW2RYC2SP2OVXCTE6Y Me too

Tri-Ace get to work on your own game for PS3 or PS360 based on that tech you showed (last year?)!  Star Ocean 4 was good gameplay wise, but I need you to get back to your Star Ocean 2 level of development, as it was your most awesome!!!

    • fayt255

Star Ocean 2 is my favorite game of all time!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Akshat-Jiwan-Sharma/1187421478 Akshat Jiwan Sharma

    That’s reassuring

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Javon-Hernandez/706489182 Javon Hernandez

If the battle system is the same shiit from the first one, I couldn’t care less.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_472QBVARRYERRGHATSUGCVCTTA Ian

haha if FFXIII-2 change to star ocean battle system that would be like “oh snap”
For star ocean 5 i think tri-ace should be work with stories and more special move… Star ocean was good but stories kinda messed up… I remember when playing it Like “What this is last stage already ?!” O_o But the bonus dungeon help the game to be playable… a lot XD
Sorry kinda off with star ocean stuff XD

  • aoihana

Very interesting, but speaking of Tri-Ace, I can’t wait for Beyond the Labyrinth.

Very excited, it’s almost here! (◕‿◕✿)

  • http://twitter.com/TheSwordUser TheSwordUser

Oooooh, so THAT’S why maps in this game are as complex as they’re supposed to be.

  • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

Interesting. And if you ask me, them helping out is somewhere around 80 points!

    • SolidusSnake

      GO TO HEAVEN.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Mc-Devitt/100002626261475 Stephen Mc Devitt

Well a little outside help wouldn’t hurt Square, in fact at least some people who don’t like S-E’s recent games, because those games were developed by internal studios, will be relieved to know XIII-2 might be one of the better ones.

  • TheDarkEmpress

Glad to see alot of these big-name companies are starting to look outside of their own bounds for inspiration and assistance….sort of like what Kojima did with Platinum. Don’t get me wrong, Tri-Ace and PlatinumGames aren’t small/unknown names in the industry, in fact they’re super talented. Hopefully a trend will start from there…instead of being stubborn and keeping everything behind their own doors perhaps branching out into development collaborations will end the strife of lack of innovation and creativity that’s currently plaguing this generation of games.

I wouldn’t have even considered XIII-2 after XIII failed so bad on so many levels, but after everything I’ve seen and heard over the past year I have that game on pre-order…it’s pretty hard to get an audience back after slighting them once, hearing that Tri-Ace had a hand in the development has sealed the day one buy for me…Same for Revengeance, wasn’t even going to check it out until I heard Platinum was working on it….they’ve essentially created 2 of the most outlandishly over-the-top, ridiculous, well-polished action game titles so far this gen….I’d be crazy not to give their 3rd a try.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

Haven’t heard from Tri-Ace in a while. I truly appreciate their offer to help SE. Tri-Ace helping them made me believe that FF13-2 is a much bigger project and game than I thought! This also gives me confidence, since I heard from Tri-Ace again, that there is going to be another Valkyrie Profile game in the future. X3 I want the name to be something like….

    Valkyrie Profile: Hrist

    or

    Valkyrie Profile: Freya

…….:P Actually I just want a new VP game starring either Freya or Hrist. That would make me sooo happy! X3

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

Honestly I don’t want Freya, clearly I don’t hate her in fact I like her but not enough to be the main character, then again we had a human male as the main character in the DS game and he was not pimp >:

The new VP if it has a number 3 the game the main character SHOULD be a Valkyrie and like I said I would love if it is Hrist. She is evil but she has feeling too so I hope they develop those things while see her being rude unlike her others sisters.

      • ShadowWolf

would be kind of cool to play as one of the other non human characters, who also go around collecting souls.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

Nibelheim herself? or one of her knights.

          • ShadowWolf

            …..yes

      • JustThisOne

I actually liked Wylfred. He was like Hamlet, but not as genius. :D

But yeah, I don’t think Freya has enough to her character to be a main one. Other than her relationship with the other gods, she doesn’t really doesn’t show any real depth with her interactions with anyone else. And I don’t think she ought to.

    • PrinceHeir

      oh yes please :D

actually last year they were rumors about a new VP game called VP3 Hrist.

      come on Tri Ace!!!!!!!

    • TheDarkEmpress

A new VP for PS3 would be absolutely beautiful…regardless of who they pick as the protagonist, I’d be all in.

Although…Hrist would be the most obvious choice as they already did one for Lenneth and Silmeria….Hrist would just be awesome as she is the eldest of the valkyries and much less empathetic than her sisters…I could see ALOT of bloodshed…and this is lovely.

    • http://twitter.com/ChestnutBowl Chestnut Bowl

      “Haven’t heard from Tri-Ace in a while. ”

Really? They’ve been in the news for a past few months with their latest games, Frontier Gate for the PSP and Beyond The Labyrinth for the 3DS.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

        Oh-*facepalm*

You’re absolutely correct. I forgot about those! Guess I’m just used to SE and Tri-ace working together and not Konami and TA. Silly me. :P

  • vrakanox

    I’ll give Tri-Ace a 10 out of 10!

  • Solomon_Kano

    Really? That’s awesome.

Hopefully they’re working on Star Ocean 5 now. Alongside finishing up Beyond the Labyrinth, that’d make me all kinds of happy. I still need to play 4 (so, so late), but 3 was one of my favorite PS2 games.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594742092 Robert M Fenner

I loved the first two SO games. Tolerated the third one, but the fourth one, hoo boy.

    • OneOkami

I’ve tried twice to play through The Last Hope and lost interest both times.  The story/gameplay literally drove me to sleep.  Despite that, I intend to eventually try a 3rd time.  I feel like I sense some charming potential in at least some of the characters.

      • Solomon_Kano

@OneOkami:disqus @facebook-594742092:disqus So… I should set my expectations low then?

        • OneOkami

I guess it wouldn’t hurt.  Better to be pleasantly surprised if anything than disappointed.

          • Solomon_Kano

Indeed. That’s how I dealt with FFXIII. Alright, so I’ll check it out.

    • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

Try it, but please do not go in expecting much. Especially if you have played Till The End of Time (the much better game)

      • Solomon_Kano

Ok. Will do. I think I’m pretty good at setting my expectations low enough to find enjoyment, so it should be fine.

    • puchinri

I’m unfortunate in that I never got to play the first two Star Ocean games so far, and 3 was my first, but I was really mixed about it. But it was really only a fault of the characters. However, I was going to get 4 no matter what!

And I did. And I love it. So very much. It’s definitely one of my favorite games for a lot of reasons, and especially for the PS3 (alongside Resonance of Fate). I’m looking forward to 5 now (and can’t wait to play the first two, of course).

      • Solomon_Kano

I haven’t played the first 2 either. That was something I meant to rectify when I got my PSP, but it just didn’t happen. So I’ll definitely be checking out 4.

Is Resonance of Fate really good? I heard a lot of negative stuff about it when it came out.

        • puchinri

That’s one of the more significant reasons I want a PSP still, to play both of those (and Lunar SSS, among other titles).

I enjoy it a lot. I’m still in the beginning, but it’s fun. The learning curve is a bit steep, and it’s easy to forget how to play and more intricate parts if you leave it for a while, but I think the battle system is fabulous. There’s lots of great customization, and the characters are fantastic.

People say the story lulls, and it probably does, but for me, characters do a lot to drive a story, so it won’t be horrible for me. For some people, the setting and scenery is a little barren too, and it’s a valid point, but I think they handled their “map”/board and the setting(s) well enough. For me, the battle system, character and weapon customization and characters alone are enough for me to invest plenty of time and love into the game.

When you finally get to play SO4, I hope you won’t mind telling me if you enjoy it or not!

          • Solomon_Kano

I’d completely forgotten Lunar! Would you happen to know if it and the Star Oceans are on PSN? I’m trying not to buy anymore UMD games with the Vita on the way (though I wouldn’t really mind buying a good JRPG twice).

Hm… the game sounds interesting enough from your description so I’ll probably end up grabbing it one day. Probably during the usual summer lull.

And I’ll certainly let you know how I feel about SO4 once I play it! Considering how cheap it is these days, that shouldn’t be too far off.

          • puchinri

            Oh, good question actually! >u<
As far as I know, they aren't on the PSP store. But that could change, most certainly. They may have snuck on there recently and I didn't catch it, but as far as I know, not a single one of them. ono

I hope you enjoy it, when you get it.'

            Awesome~!

          • Solomon_Kano

            Thanks for the answer.

Hm. If not, I hope they start putting more PSP releases on PSN once the Vita comes out. If I have to buy them on UMD though, I certainly will.

          • puchinri

I would hope they do, but I somewhat suspect they will too. Within the first month or two would be smart to me. Then again, maybe it’s something they’ve already started looking into~! That’d be great.

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, it’d be great to go along with the UMD Passport thing (supposing we see that in the west at all) around launch time. So I guess we’ve just gotta hold out hope!

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=20704987 Heath Bunch

I think the story was much much better in 1 and 2, so you should definitely give them a shot eventually. Not to mention that you don’t need to go running back to any ships for item creation, ala SO4. Lol

        • puchinri

From what I’ve seen, read and heard, the story sounds a lot better compared to 3 and 4, but playing 1 and 2 has been a goal of mine for a long time now anywho, so once I’ve experienced those (and completed 4), I’ll probably enjoy the story of all of them much better.

I actually didn’t mind returning back to the ship so far for item creation. x’D
But I’m only on my, like, second planet? So maybe it’ll be ten times more tedious down the line and I won’t enjoy it then, hehe.

  • Alexis Matthews

I have issues with FF13. Sorry for going off-topic, but can anyone help me with these issues? Here they are, and sorry for the super long post.

    Problems:
In certain cutscenes (such as some in Chapter 3), it just freezes in place, forcing me to skip them, and I really wanted to look at them. In certain maps, when I go to a place where an event happens (when it’s about to go to a cutscene), it gets stuck on the loading disc icon and it never loads, which not only doesn’t show the cutscene, but it also makes me stuck in the same place on the map, yet I can still move around. Finally, sometimes, when I load my file, and it goes to the loading screen when it also presents a summary of what is currently happening at where you last saved at in text/many paragraphs, the music cuts off and it just sticks to the loading disc icon, and it never loads, forcing me to restart the whole game!

When did I have these problems:
When I first got the game back in January 2011, I never had these issues. Ever. Now (beginning of Dec.), when I start a new game and I try to complete it, all these issues pop up.

Things I did before I asked this question:
I checked my disc to see if it’s scratched under my lamp light and I found no scratches, and just to make sure, I also found no cracks at the side of the disc. I even it cleaned it gently with disk cleaning wipes and that didn’t work either. I checked to see if my PS3 had any corrupted data and it didn’t had any. I looked to see if it’s up-to-date, and yeah…..it is. Deleted my data and started over. Didn’t work. I try to find solutions online and I found none. I finally gave up and just wanted to buy another copy (which doesn’t cost that much now), but I couldn’t find any at the local stores near me such as Gamestop, Best-Buy, and friggin’ Wal-Mart! I don’t trust ordering online from Gamestop because they constantly mess up my order and make ugly excuses, so ordering from there is a no-no for me. I hate Amazon and Ebay because I don’t trust them either plus their items mostly aren’t in good condition (experience), Target takes too long (experienced from them) and most of the other sites I don’t know (which means I don’t trust), so……ordering’s out of the question.

Yeah……Again, I made this post really long, but I tried providing as much information as I can of what my issues are and from what I done about it. Please help……if even possible……T-T

Got a new copy off of eBay for $15…I’ve never once had an issue with eBay or Amazon….I don’t understand why people have such a hard time….Nobody goes to retail stores anymore….I’ve gotten like 4 or 5 games so far on Amazon without paying full price ON release date….can’t beat that.

      • Alexis Matthews

        ON release date?!

        …….Ugh. Speechless, really.

    • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Sounds like its a hardware issue but you didnt say anywhere in your post if it happens with other games.

If its the disc why not just contact Square Enix for assistance or a replacement disc? Some publishers replace discs free of charge.

      • Alexis Matthews

Oh yeah. No, just this one, so I don’t think it’s a hardware issue. Also, I heard many times that SE would very rarely reply to consumer issues.

    • KOKAYI5

My FF13 never freezed once. I heard about problems, maybe it’s a matter of bytes and space?

      • Alexis Matthews

        *Sigh*

……..This is so stupid…….No, not this or you, ME! I never tried that! Maybe that will fix it! I’ll see how it goes! :3

        • KOKAYI5

My PS3 broke into pieces after like 7 years of good gaming and lots of data stored up. I backed it up but now I gotta hunt down a PS3 that can still play PS2 games. Most of my RPGs are PS2.

      • Alexis Matthews

GASP! IT DID! IT DID! Thank you soooo much, @KOKAYI5:disqus ! Such a simple solution and I never even knew!!! You have my appreciation! X3

        • KOKAYI5

NP, I hope you get to play it thru now with unhindered.

  • landlock

This sort of thing is pretty common if you look at the credits. Like Media Vision (Wild ARMs) helped out on Vesperia.

    • KOKAYI5

I miss Wild ARMs games so bad. I wanted a 6th game, but like all PS2 RPG series (except Tales and FF) it died.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Max-Lestage/100001999473380 Max Lestage

No wonder Lightning looked like something out of Valkyrie Profile.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Wow, I never even thought of that. Not sure if Tri-Ace had any bearing on that, but it definitely is one heck of a coincidence, haha.

    • fayt255

As well as Vallhalla being mentioned.

  • ShadowWolf

and now i have higher hopes for the game.

  • kroufonz

This is good news, Tri Ace still have relation with SquareEnix

    VP3 is still Possible!

    • Xerain

I never thought it was impossible. I seem to remember tri-Ace’ Stance on VP to only make VP games when they feel inspired, and not simply to because they can. As having a restricted viewpoint on the events of world history is often intentional, I imagine merely depicting past events often referenced in the games is not a good enough reason for them to make another.

    • fayt255

Yeah It’s good to know Tri-Ace is in good terms with SE.

  • KOKAYI5

I wish one day FF would do a game with a battle system like Star Ocean 3 or 4.

    • Solomon_Kano

I’d like the FF system to continue changing, but what would be the point of it aping another series when… you know, that series is still around? Couldn’t you just play Star Ocean for that?

      • SerendipityX

I agree with wanting the FF system to keep changing. For a while I assumed they would be doing the same ole thing until FFXIII and FXIIIVersus came around. If anything I’d want to change things up so it doesn’t become predictable and I already know how to play the game before I even start it.

        • Solomon_Kano

Yea, that’s something I’ve liked about the series from X up. While X wasn’t TOO different, I had to adjust a bit after IX what with the Overdrives actually requiring you to do something. Then there was XII and XIII, and Versus looks to buck the trend again (even if it’s doing it by moving into KH territory).

I’m liking that Squenix doesn’t seem content to let the gameplay stagnate.

      • KOKAYI5

Star Ocean 4 was the last, the alluded to that with “the Last Hope” subtitle. All I can do is play their games over and over now.
One day, mark my words, all RPGs will be action oriented and people like me who still like Turn-Based ones too will be ignored and forgotten. Everyone will say “get with the times or stop playing games”. And that’s just not fair.

        • Solomon_Kano

That is indeed unfair, but I don’t see there ever being a time when there are absolutely no turn-based RPGs. Even now, while they’re seemingly in the minority, there are new turn-based RPGs being made.

As for 4, has that allusion ever been stated officially? Because that title was also an allusion to the game’s story. I just prefer not to declare a series dead til the makers have actually said so. Helps me know when to keep hope alive for a new one or not lol.

The makers did in fact say the series was over and that they wanted to move on to new things. It’s a shame, because I like some of the cast of 4 but it had the weakest cast of the games.

RPGs being in minority is how it starts. Then one day they’re gone, at least no more may ever reach the US. Even an exec or something in Square said that they could no longer ignore the meteoric growth in fanbase for action and action/RP games. I think we may see our last traditional RPG around 2014. Look at PS3, PS2 was full of RPGs and lots were anime-influenced. Now lots of people are making FPSs that have RPG elements and other games are getting deeper storylines. As a whole, RPGs are dying at least in Europe and US when it comes to ones that are anime-influenced mainly, but all may die out one day.

Trust me, I fear and hate the idea, but I used to get one new RPG ever 3 months. Now I get like 2 every 8 months, if that. I play action/RPGs, and sometimes non-RPGs but they’re my first love and if they truly go, I basically have to retire from games.

Oh? Well that’s unfortunate. It was a good series. Ah well, their next console project should be good.

I don’t see them dying in the manner you predict. The lesser degree of anime-influenced RPGs on PS3 has to do with the lesser degree of RPGs on current consoles period. We all know that J-devs were slow to adopt the current-gen with many still preferring to develop for PSP. SE is not the end all be all, so they can’t really speak for everyone. The real reason why this gen has less RPGs than the last is simply because it costs more to develop them for HD consoles and the Japanese are fond of their handhelds.

They won’t die, but they’ll certainly change. You can probably look forward to your favorite non-Tales, FF, or Persona RPG shifting down to portables in the future if they haven’t already.

Honestly, I love any kind of RPG. So if the RPG gives way to the action-RPG, then it’ll be the action RPG I love. One of my favorite series, Kingdom Hearts, is an action-RPG. I take no issue with them so long as they’re well-made. If ever there’s a day when turn-based RPGs truly die, then I have a hundreds across the SNES, PS1, and PS2 that I may yet return to. I don’t think the genre’s future is quite so bleak.

That’s a pretty interesting bit of information. It’s cool to see Square Enix getting some outside help, especially from one of my favorite companies.

This may not be the first time it’s said but I just want to put it out there.  Anyone else feel it refreshing to find so few trolls on this site?

  • TheMysticalNinja

Well that makes me all the more excited for this game.

  • JustThisOne

Awesome! I wonder what part of the game design they did specifically. :O

“Tri-Ace helped out on the game with aspects of game design, art and programming.”

      • JustThisOne

:P Well I meant more specific than thaaat. Did they contribute in level design? General plot ideas? Gameplay tweeks? What part did they play in character design, if at all? That kind of thing.

no wonder it seems less linear and more exploration, bravo tri ace!

Oh~Tri-ace… How I love you so… Please create a new IP or ROF sequel!! I really miss your games!!!

  • Duc PC-QB

OK So where is my Star Ocean 5 and Valkyrie Profile 3 ?

  • xNekux

No wonder it looked so much better.
Tri-Ace is probably the only part of SE that still gives me hope

  • skymap

    So that’s what they’ve been doing. :o

I wonder if Tri-Ace is capable of giving Star Ocean 5 a halfway decent cast/story. The gameplay for the 4th one looks intriguing, but I wont touch it because the story looks just that bad. But maybe it’s no worse than Tales of Xillia and FFXIII …

I’m glad they did, because it shows. The game seems much better than the original FF XIII.

Sweet, that’s a guarantee the battle system won’t suck :D
