Members Of The Panzer Dragoon Team Are Working On Project Draco

Panzer Dragoon creator, Yukio Futatsugi, along with many other members of the original Panzer Dragoon development team, is working on Project Draco, a Kinect rail-shooter for Xbox Live Arcade. In an interview with Gamasutra, Futatsugi reveals that the game design lead, the lead programmer, concept designer, and a member of the sound team were all members of Sega’s Team Andromeda.

Futatsugi reveals that in Project Draco, you’ll have access to about 150 skills, and you’ll be able to customize your dragon using these. You’ll be able to use three skills at any given point; one mapped to your right hand, one to the left, and one that requires the use of both hands. Since Project Draco is built completely for Kinect, the game won’t support a regular Xbox 360 controller.

Another of the ways Project Draco differs from Panzer Dragoon is that it’s set on a planet inhabited by dragons that humans are in the process of colonizing. For this reason, Draco’s dragons look more creature-like, as opposed to the weapon-like dragons from the Panzer Dragoon titles.

Project Draco doesn’t have a release date yet, but when it is released, it will be under a different title. You can read more about the game in Gamasutra’s interview.

Wait, “Xbox Live Arcade”? So it either won’t be a full game, be really short, or be a huge download? I hope it gets a disk release, because I’m hoping for more than just a quick-play title… This is the only Kinect game I’ve looked forward to…

If it’s on XBLA, it’s probably because they don’t think it would make a return on retail. I guess it will have lower production values than a full game, but no reason to think it will be short… well, shorter. This kind of shooters have always been pretty short.

After all, let us not let nostalgia cloud our judgement: if you played the first Panzer Dragoon from the first level to the last boss, it wouldn’t even last two hours, and it was a retail game. Much like shmups, they were made for repeat playthroughs. This will probably be the same. Child of Eden was similar, which is why I think it was a bad idea to launch it at full price at retail. At least they aren’t making the same mistake here.

Aww that’s sort of disappointing if they don’t think it’s worth putting out on disk… I was hoping for some awesome dragon cover art! It’s still in development, so who knows if they’ll change their minds or how things will turn out in the long run.

    PS3 please ^_^

      This is a Microsoft game…

      • malek86

I wouldn’t completely exclude it yet. Ninja Gaiden 2 was also published by Microsoft, and it eventually found its way to the PS3. I think it happened a few times with XBLA games too. Wasn’t Limbo published by Microsoft?

Still, yeah, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Except I’m pretty sure that this is a Microsoft dev group. More that sort of like asking for a Bungie game when they were still working for MS.

There just needs to be something more than the first/third perspective adventure/shooter games we’ve gotten this gen.

          • malek86

The developer is called Groundlink, apparently. Not sure whether they are internal or not. Still, it does look like there’s a Microsoft producer, so you may be right.

        One can dream lol

I’d say better a Lair remake by Naughty Dog, but then it would be about bareknuckle brawling other dragon riders while looking for treasure with a smart talking side kick.
