Does This Legend of Zelda Timeline Make Sense?

By Ishaan . December 21, 2011 . 3:17pm

This week, Nintendo released Hyrule Historia, a Legend of Zelda encyclopedia in Japan, that covers art work and the history of Hyrule across all the games. It also reveals the series’ much-debated timeline.

A fan has gotten his hands on the book now that it’s out in the wild, and seems to have reported the timeline at this link. A Kotaku reader took the liberty of translating it, and this is what we end up with:

Does This Legend of Zelda Timeline Make Sense?

Update: The Oracle games were missing from our previous chart. The chart has been updated to include those.

A big, big thanks to Robert for the awesome tip!

Makes perfect sense. Debate is done, let us move on with another meaningless argument.

The three way Split makes absolutely no sense at all, cuz why does he fail? In wich scenario? So if we say he pulled the Master Sword in OoT and disappeared from that Timeline and leads to ALttP, shouldn´t the Master Sword disappear too? And if they mean Link fails to defeat Ganon in the Adult OoT Timeline and Seven Sages seal him off later, wouldn´t it lead 1. Into Wind Waker and not ALttP and 2. would there be a Scenario that didn´t even occur?

So i read through and the most thing making sense to me is when Adult Link travelled back for the Shadow Temple leaving the Master Sword in the Future behind and with him disappearing from that Timeline, the Sages are able to banish Ganon into the Dark World (If they are the same Sages or not doesn´t really matter. Could be that the War from ALttP Prolog occured a long time until Sages sealed him.) wich leads into A Link to the Past. Makes rly most sense to me. Everything else is kinda fine except for Four Swords Adventure that would fit after ALttP because of the resembalnce of Ganon. Everything is fine and it look like it could be that from Oracles to Adventure of Link it is the same Link.

I don’t think he leaves the Master Sword in the future. I think it just sits in the Temple of Time. Even still, I thought it was the same future all this time. Does this mean we’re going to get a fourth timeline for when Link returns to being a child for the Spirit Temple, too?

I also like the fact that the two Original Zelda NES games are the last one…. at the moment. In a weird way we the players have been playing the Zelda legend from end to the beginning.

Makes sense now, since the town names in Zelda II are based on the sages in OoT in honor of them.  Amazing continuity there.
Also we have to prevent Ganon from returning by not dying.

I think they missed the point of the timeline. XD

I haven’t played Zelda a great deal because I’ve never owned the right systems. Anyone mind telling me why the timeline splits?

My point of arguement is the following, how did ganondorf from twilight princess get the triforce of power sign on his hand, since he was sealed before the door of time ever having been opened..(because link traveling back from adult time line prevents the attack from happening at all) plus, how come there are 6 sages sealing ganondorf, even though in the child timeline the 6 sages were not present..(they became sages after link draws out the master sword)
