Wipeout-Style Racing Recreated In Real Life

By Ishaan . January 7, 2012 . 10:39am

Sony’s Wipeout series has some very devoted fans at the “Japan Institute of Science and Technology”. Siliconera reader, Celedin, linked us to this very cool Wipeout video they uploaded recently, trying to replicate anti-gravity racing using liquid nitrogen tanks:

(They even used one of my favourite ships — EG-X!)

I don’t like Wipeout but even I have to admit that’s pretty cool

Meh, everyone knows Qirex is where it’s at.

    • SpiderCVIII

Ha! Everyone knows Assegai is where it is really at.

      • Sam G-nIus Paris

Tch’ Its all about that Qirex R.D.

    • konsama

Every one knows AG-Systems is where it’s at :P

  • PoweredByHentai

Um, some of the other sites like Andriasang, Joystiq and Kotaku have heard that this might be entirely CG and not real.

The other red flag is that there exists a Japan ADVANCED Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) but not Japan Institute of Science and Technology (JIST).

It’s been widely regarded as being fake.  The technology to do this exists, but this is not a video of it.  There’s a lot of problems, like the condensation trails clip through the track at one point (1:13-1:16), there’s no JIST (there’s a JAIST), and so on.

edit: and that floating social networking toolbar on this site is going to drive me crazy. :(

    • godmars

Just agreeing with you about the toolbar. Hated it the second i saw it and it started moving. Its very intrusive and blocks text.

At the very least Siliconera, please put it right of the screen.

      • PoweredByHentai

I used Adblock Plus to kill that stupid floating toolbar.

Agree with the floating tool bar

    • poisui

To block the floating social toolbar:

If you have Adblock Plus, block the following url:

      I hope that helps. :)

I’ve always avoided adblock since I generally want to support the websites I visit.  But this is dreadful, and it’s even on the mobile version of the site.  :(

I love auricom but its cool.

  • SirRichard

Even if it’s fake, it’s still a pretty neat little video.

Reminds me; I got WipeOut HD back when the PSN came back up after the hack, still haven’t played it…should get on that.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

I guess I didn’t do a very good job of conveying that it was probably a fun fake. I just kind of figured people would see right through it…

Although, I guess a lot of them did!

  • http://twitter.com/marcox199 marco lpz

    too slow for f-zero…

    • http://twitter.com/josequijano jose

Well, I would consider F-zero slow, I mean it stayed way back in 2004. :D

      PS: I actually agree.

  • Mister_Nep

    Science!

  • Stahn Aileron

Actually, if you think about it, since when was liquid nitrogen distributed in CO2-cartridge size containers? The insulation and reinforcement needed on that would be enough to essential negate the viability of nitrogen being distributed like that. Never mind the fact the “nitrogen” was simply injected into the model. (And the fact the injector nozzlehead piece wasn’t very insulated either.)

Oh well. Fake it may be, but it’s still cool.

  • Bio_liquid

They used both my favorite ship AND my favorite track!
