Steins;Gate Will Make The Shift To PlayStation 3 This Year

Famitsu.com revealed today that Mages and Nitroplus’ Steins;Gate is being ported to the PlayStation 3 this year. It will be available starting May 24th in Japan for 7,140 yen.

Additionally, Steins;Gate: Hiyoku Renri no Darling, a love-comedy spin-off, will be making the jump as well. This, too, will be released on May 24th for 6,090 yen.

Both Steins;Gate titles will also be available in a double pack on the same day. A price hasn’t been announced for the double pack yet. The two games are already available for the Xbox 360 and PSP, so this will be their third console release.

YES COME TO AMERICA NIS,ATLUS,MANGAMER ANYONE LOCALIZE THIS DO IT FOR THE BANANA D:.

      • mirumu

If they translate it into english then I don’t care where they release it. For now I’ll just content myself that a high definition version without a silly region lock exists.

      • Jrpgfanatic

I just want to interject a “NORTH” in front of your “AMERICA” because, you know, America isn’t the only country in North America, despite that being the popular theory among Americans lol

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

Ah, yes yes. That’s true lol. :3

        • EusisLandale

But now you’re just ignoring South America. America is a better way to put it, even if some people think of the States at just the one word. Americas I suppose? Either way, spread the love right? Of course right!

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

I thought it wasn’t just N.America, so I just left it as it is. It’s just usually N.America, but S.Americans have to have fun too, right?

    First Robotics;Notes, then the Vita, now this! 5pb. loves my wallet too much. ;_;

  • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

Ah, screw it! I’ll import it on PSP if I need to…or to a lesser extent PS3.

  • Ben Lyd

For those wanting a US/PAL release, the PC version has a translation patch that’s almost finished. Get dat.

    • Ryos

While that’d be nice and all, some of us would prefer to support a local effort when possible.  At least in theory a PS3 release would be likelier but for obvious reasons, I’m not going to hold my breath on this one either.

      • Ben Lyd

I’m not at all against an official English release, either. I just think the chances are so low there’s no reason to hold out for a localized version when you could patch the PC version.

      • mirumu

I’d think it’s got a better chance than most VNs given it’s good looking unique visuals, lack of ero content, and it’s comparitively high profile overseas. If any VN would sell well outside Japan this would surely be near the top of the list.

But yes, unfortunately even then the chances are slim as you say.

    • mirumu

Interesting. The PC version still seems readily available for purchase in Japan too. Tempting, tempting.

  • Opn

a victory…FOR SCIENCE *holds up dr pepper and drinks it and laughs like a maniac*

  • Darkrise

What’s missing in that title is “with an overseas release.”

    • godmars

Think there needs to be a 3rd party translator company like Working Designs for that to happen. And as far as I can tell the industrial community needed to support it, the dub/sub companies like ADV, VIZ or Bandai, have all but collapsed.

Again, the fan community is certainly there/here, but the people who’d Sony or small JP game devs would actually talk to, simply aren’t there. Were driven out of business by piracy.

      • Ryos

Uh, correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think a single anime company localized a visual novel.  While they are certainly less interactive than most games, they’re still handled by video game companies – at least here.

        • godmars

Media Blasters did Phantom of Inferno which I think was playable on PS2 as a media playable DVD.

Obviously the practice didn’t take off.

          • Ryos

Come to think of it, MB did a couple eroge.  You’re right though, it’s not  commonplace. Hirameki handled the DVD playable Phantom of Inferno title.

          • Ladius

Hirameki localized the visual novel’s interactive DVD port, not Media Blasters. A shame they weren’t able to simply port the PC edition, since the interactive DVD of Phantom of Inferno is a chore to play.

      That would be great.

Guess I know what I’m importing around May!

This is sexy, i wish they could release them digitally, so it could make it easiert to get them by downloading, im already getting psp ver. of the lobu lobu one, and had to wait for psp ver of normal steins;gate… i need to save my money for robotic;notes for ps3 I WONT BE ABLE TO WAIT FOR PSP PORT ANYMOAR… ps3 japanese games too expensive T___T

  • Hours

If this gets an English release, I’d be ecstatic.

  • http://twitter.com/charliesabers Carlos Escalante

I loved the anime series, would love for this to be my first visual novel :).

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eduardo-Herculano/100002609376138 Eduardo Herculano

you should try it. the visual novel is much better than the anime.

      • Aoshi00

It’s better to have played the game first before watching the anime though.  If one has watched the anime from beginning to end alrdy, there wouldn’t be much surprise for the story, except it’s a bit more detailed.  I thought both the game and anime adaptation were excellent.  This is one of the best time traveling stories to date.

        • Gatchaman1

Its certainly much better than XIII-2

          • Aoshi00

I beat the game over the weeekend, got several alternate endings too.. I enjoyed 13-2 a great deal overall, a really good FF in a while in fact.  The time traveling was done better than I had expected.  For me 13-2 was like a mix of Chrono Trigger and Steins;Gate.

        • Darkrise

Hm, would it be better that I dive right into the VN now even though I’m up to the 18th ep? I got the ‘beta’ eng patch for the pc version.

          • Aoshi00

Ep 18 is still kinda OK.. but you’ve alrdy watched liked 3 endings (Suzuha, Luka, Feyris, they got alternate ones in the game too of course).. If you are really going to play the game, it would be better if you stop watching the anime (if you could stand the temptation that is :) On the other hand you only have 6 eps left, if you can’t wait to see how it ends you might as well finish it, truly epic :) Again, if you play the game not knowing the story, there’s a lot of shockers, so…

I think once people have finished watching the anime, the impact would be a lot less compared to if you experienced the game first w/o knowing the story. Otherwise now you’re just reading a more detailed version w/ more text and less animation, the feeling’s probably different. When I first heard S;G was getting animated, I finished the game first as I didn’t want to be spoiled.. so many moments made me heart pound and shed tears.. I was pretty slow in playing it, took me like 50 hrs.. really one of the best VNs that set the bar higher (and w/o gore and sex too). The anime adaptation did the game great justice.

Another thing to keep in mind, the game’s art would probably look a bit weird once you’re so used to the anime… I much prefer the anime art style compared to huke later, even got the anime artbook w/ lots of posters, loved Sakai Kyuuta’s anime char design :)

  • icecoffemix

I’m still puzzled why did Japanese developers, let alone VN developer, even bother with 360.

    • http://twitter.com/Haseosan87 Francesco

I think it’s because programming on X360 is pretty much like programming on PC, so making games for that console is simpler.
Anyway, this is such good news! I’d really take it if someone would localize it.

      • Gatchaman1

Yeah but the audience is so limited its kinda not worth it imo. I mean, take a look at FF XIII-2. They shipped 1 million PS3 copies and sold 750K. They shipped 30K 360 copies and sold like 10K.

      • icecoffemix

I thought this was old news and has improved considerably? There are even free cross platform engine by Sony now http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhyreEngine

And doesn’t the 360 version actually have higher chance of making it to the west?

    • http://www.facebook.com/strawberry.kurosaki William Hsia

didn’t the president say how he preferred dev on 360? this is kinda a contraindication to his word but i don’t mind

The S;G PC English translation patch is currently undergoing a complete script overhaul but progress on other fronts have grinded to a halt (see vn.shourai.net and http://e17time.blogspot.com/ for more details) so I doubt we’ll be seeing the ‘final’ patch any time soon.

On a brighter note, the current script has been ported to the iOS version of S;G so you can get your fix of Mayuri on the go in English along with your tutturu ringtone.

It costs $34.99 on itunes though, making it one of the more expensive titles on there but way cheaper than what you’d pay for it on console. It would still be wise to grab a discounted itunes gift card to further lessen the hit to your wallet. Also clear some space on your iDevice, the game weighs in at 1.83GB.

    • Gatchaman1

Yeah ….how the heck does that even work btw (transferring a fan translation patch to an iPhone/iPad game)

      • Ken Chan

For Steins;Gate iOS you just connect your iDevice to your PC, browse to the Steins;Gate app with a file explorer e.g. iFunBox and drag and drop the translation files into the relevant directory.
http://tsuuun.blogspot.com/ is where you can find the iOS patch and additional information if you need it.

  • Solomon_Kano

I’ve heard nothing but good about the game, so hopefully this earns it a chance at localization… *sigh* yea, wishful thinking is a pain lol.

    • Aoshi00

This is really one of the best VNs or time traveling stories ever (the characters were unique and amazing).. It’s good but different from Back to the Future or Chrono Trigger, it’s relatively based more on reality and science than fantasy.. and has none of the sex or gore in most other VNs.. it is all about emotion.  I’m not too big on VNs or dating sims anymore, but this is on a different league and set a higher bar for the time traveling theme..  I just beat FF 13-2, I didn’t think the time traveling story in that was too shabby either :)

Now Steins;Gate has conquered 360, PC, PSP, iPhone/Pad, and now PS3, this is truly the choice of Steins;Gate :)

Personally I think this game is best to be played on console w/ achievement/trophies.. I didn’t like the spin-off that much though.. wasn’t that great compared to the main game…

      • Solomon_Kano

Hm. I’m always up for a good time travel story. I’m glad that 13-2′s turned out fine as well, since I plan on picking that up. Loved the demo. I’ve never given a VN the time of day but, with what you’ve said, I would certainly buy Steins;Gate should it see a localized release. I’ve held off on watching the anime, so I guess I’ll hold off a while longer.

        • Aoshi00

Yeah, if they do decide to localize the game one day, it’s better not to have watched the anime first.  Other than some minor omission, the anime adaptation was rather faithful and really did the game’s story and chars justice (has much more animation than the VN too :)  I don’t collect that much anime, but bought all the S;G blu-rays.. I really can’t imagine one playing the game after watchng the anime, there’s really not much point since you alrdy know where the story is going and what’s going to happen to the chars, and the experiernce would be totally different..

I think most people liked the 13-2 demo too, S-E was right to put it out before the game release :)

BTW, I’m not a huge fan of VNs in general either, so I had put off getting Steins;Gate for a long time, then when I heard it was getting an anime, I thought I should try the game (after seeing the unanimous positive reviews on Amazon Jpn), and I hit myself for not playing the game sooner :)

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, the 13-2 demo probably swayed a lot of people who were on the fence about the game. It’s just the right size to give one a taste of all the changes that were made over 13, so that was a good move on SE’s part.

Well, I guess I’m going to buy what few VNs do see localization in the hopes that it would encourage publishers to bring more in the future. Looks like I’ll be starting with Hakuoki. If I had some understanding of Japanese I’d just import Steins;Gate and be done with it, but I guess this will be in lieu of that.

      • PrinceHeir

do you plan on buying it :D

        • Aoshi00

lol.. nah, as much as I love it, it’s just the same game, not like double dipping on the Jpn & US ver of 13-2, unless they localize it in Eng.. Frankly I’ve spent a lot of money on Steins;Gate alrdy.. the 360 game, OST, drama CDS, nendoroids, the spin-off sequel (I regret getting the limited edition, totally not worth it), the 9 anime blu-rays, and anime artbook :)… like over $1,000 *.*…  but I love S;G :) I dunno.. I wonder what the PS3 covers would look like, probably some new kick butt huke illustration :) I just thought it’s good it’s finally on PS3 w/ trophies, unlike PC/PSP/iOS… the achievement add a lot ot the game.

          • PrinceHeir

            *goes into zombie mode

            YOU…MUST…GET…IT!!!!!!

            O___________________O

          • Aoshi00

lol, a big maybe :)… btw I just finished watching Walking Dead Season 1, so good *.*… I don’t want to double dip like I did Catherine and then triple dip when it’s localized, not sure what are the chances though, seems a bit higher now that it’s been released on all platforms and anime..

      • Gatchaman1

Not to mention Kuristina is in Phantom Breaker and Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk II (as a summon)

I watched the Anime on Crunchyroll and it was cool

Though if this doesnt get localized, there’s still the fan translation project for the PC/iOS version

        • Aoshi00

I like Kurisu a lot, but I’m not too interested in either Phantom Breaker nor Neptunia though (they’re milking it a bit much).. I still have yet to see the Steins;Gate anime subbed, I would get the US blu-rays too if they’re released later.  Like I said I prefer playing this game w/ achievement (I never play games on the PC and don’t have an iPhone/Pad), if they localize it I would definitely get it on PS3.
