Mortal Kombat Vita Will Have Touchscreen Fatalities, Exclusive Challenge Tower

Earlier in the week, Warner Bros. announced that 2011’s Mortal Kombat would be heading to the PlayStation Vita this spring. In addition to retaining all the content from the PlayStation 3 version of the game, the Vita port also has new features built specifically for it.

NetherRealm Studios Creative Director, Ed Boon, says that the PlayStation Vita version of Mortal Kombat has a second Challenge Tower, since the development team felt that the Challenge Tower mode was a good fit for mobile gaming sessions. This second tower has 150 additional challenges, several of which involve making use of Vita-specific features, such as the touch screen and accelerometer.

On the subject of the touch screen, touch controls have been implemented in the Vita game in a limited capacity. For instance, you can touch your X-Ray meter to do an X-Ray attack. Fatalities will be easier, too, as you can making slashing motions (eg; away, away, up) on the touch screen to perform them.

Boon also assures that the Vita version of Mortal Kombat will run at 60 frames-per-second, just like the console versions. Finally, DLC characters and Kratos are readily playable in the game as well.

It’s awesome news for the Western market (myself included) but damn, with the PS Vita selling only 18k units last week Sony needs to come up with a few games that will appeal to the japanese market or else they’ll just lose it~.
