“Top Men” At Capcom Discussing Mega Man’s Future For The Next Ten Years

Top Men At Capcom Discussing Mega Mans Future For The Next Ten Years

In a new “Ask Capcom” video Q&A, senior vice-president, Christian Svensson, once again answers a few Mega Man-related fan queries. First, Svensson touches briefly upon Capcom’s plans for the upcoming Mega Man 25th anniversary.

“We are continuing to noodle what our plans and what our celebration should be,” Svensson shares. “There’s a whole bunch of things that we know we kind of have to get in a row before we actually really divulge or start to celebrate Mega Man.”

Later in the Q&A, he fields a question regarding whether or not Mega Man fans will have things to look forward to in the future.

“I hesitate to say exactly what, because I don’t want people reading more into it than is there,” Svensson says. “Let’s just say there are top men thinking about and actively discussing where we’re going to take the brand for the next ten years and how we’re going to do it.”

Extraordinarily bad chose of words there.

*mental image of Megaman being wheeled in to a giant warehouse, never to be seen again*

Knowing capcom, it’ll probably be ‘updated’ so it’s a Gears of War clone

    • http://www.facebook.com/LQUMB Franco Castaneda

Thank you for not making me the only one who thought of that scene. Now i’m sad.

      • godmars

Who didn’t think of it immediately when reading the title, that’s what I want to know.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tim-Bustin/100002646117128 Tim Bustin

I honestly feel that the best route to take the series is some place new for it while maintaining the feeling of the mega man series. I think taking the X series the metroid-vania route would be the best fit. The whole game would take place in Sigmas fortress or something. Adding some RPG elements to it too add some depth and there you go. One can dream

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q6NXXGMO5XNSMJ64NIHYHFP56A Vince

Well, something like that but with all Blue Bomber incarnations ranging from Rock, X, Zero, Aile/Vent, Ashe/Grey, Trigger, .Exe and Star Force in like you said, -vania setting, ala Harmony of Despair.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/xxHiryuuxx Hiryuu

‘I hesitate to say exactly what, because I don’t want people reading more into it than is there…’

You might as well have just said ‘no comment’.  This is just asking for PR burn.

  • KotaroInugami

I’d rather be told megaman is dead, than have this false hope.

    • Testsubject909

It’s sad then that Rockman’s Sprite Logic on mobile phone would be Megaman’s Swan Song…

      [edit]
My bad. I wrote Megaman’s Sprite Logic. We never got that mobile game here.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q6NXXGMO5XNSMJ64NIHYHFP56A Vince

If that MML3 prototype is still around, might as well make it available for public purchase on the Anniversary.

    Hey, one can dream, right?

It’s either the “Top Men” finally give the MM fans a new game, continue to troll or worse… Put the Blue Bomber on retirement.

  • cmurph666

Mega Man Legends 3 or Bust~!!

  • http://twitter.com/ifarah12 Gren

Maybe you could, you know, release the Legends 3 demo since it was finished and all.  I just do not get the decision of not releasing it, maybe it was to spite Inafune like everyone says.

At this point i’d rather Mega Man die then for current Capcom to handle him.

  • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

I’m really concerned with the future of Mega Man. I’m not sure how his 25th Anniversary will go.

  • epy

Too bad Capcom’s “top men” are a bunch of old business suits who know nothing about games. Low expectations is the way to go with these guys.

    • AuraGuyChris

If it’s blue and it shoots things, it won’t reach their standards.

Capcom loooooves to pour salt and lemon over the wounds they made to their fanbase.

    • godmars

      hmm, lemon salt…

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q6NXXGMO5XNSMJ64NIHYHFP56A Vince

..And it hurts more with trolling on teh side.

    • elsalvadorps

Or this specific fanbase seriously…seriously overeacts about anything they say or do

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jonathan-Ingram/100002032335254 Jonathan Ingram

The fanbase having good reason to be a bit jumpy.  2 canned games in a row is never a good message.

        • Testsubject909

And then consider the last Megaman games that were made this past year.

In 2011, the last Megaman games that were made were….
Rockman Diver. Rockman the Puzzle Battle and Rockman’s Sprite Logic.

All three were mobile phone games.

      • Guest

That too, but capcom pumping them with Legends 3 and then cancelling the whole thing was a bit of a dickish move. Might as well not bother announcing the game at all.

        • Testsubject909

You barely hear anyone mentioning Universe nowadays…

  • http://twitter.com/Laith_Rem Laith Rem

Look you give me a ZX sequel and I’ll put a good word on you guys.

      pffft, HAHAHAHAHA!

so im NOT the only one who thought that.

    This needs more Legends 3.  It went too far to just be abandoned like it was ;_;

    • Testsubject909

“We did not receive enough fan feedback to deem the project worth our time and effort” My ass…

      I hate you Capcom…

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

This is nice, but I still just want a new ZX or Star Force game. Make it happen someday, please. :)

    …….Please? (◕ _ ◕)

    …………………….(ಠ_ಠ)

    PLEEEEEEAAAASE!!! (>.<)

    Gosh, I hope that works. ( ̄□ ̄;)

    • godmars

Wish they put ZX on the Vita. PSN/XBLA.

      • Testsubject909

ZX has some great potential, but you know what I’d really love?

A game that takes into account the entirety of the Megaman Universe within itself… I wonder what kind of game could do that…

        • godmars

Something far too much for the current Capcom to deal with I’d bet.

    • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

I just hope they can do it right. But that’s just me saying.

    • Testsubject909

If it were on the Vita… With the incorporation of a back touch screen and a front touch screen you can now make some gimmick powers as well, on the back touch screen alone I could imagine something like a radar wave, you tap to create a visual wave/sonar that would detect hidden items hidden or possibly even knock them out of their hiding spots if the shockwave is close enough.

For a fast machine-gun style power that would replicate Bass’ buster, you could curve the bullets by creating a sort of ‘magnetic pocket’ with where you’re touching on the back screen which could add more complexity and depth to the puzzle games.

On the front screen you could set up proximity bombs of sorts or simultaneous bombs to be activated by a tap of a button though with obvious limited use, again both puzzle solving and useful for bosses in some ways, this is just me throwing ideas out here.

There’s also possibly canvasing enemies, pinching them or unpinching them to bring up a quick analysis of them in a pause menu as part of your helmet upgrade, letting you know more of the enemy and turning the battlefield into a virtual lexicon for your entertaining pleasure.

Or actually moving the screen around to scour around and see what’s around you, maybe check if above you in a tunnel there’s some hidden path or item waiting for you or something.

…And nobody in Capcom will do anything I said or anything remotely close to it. My expectations are shot dead.

  • PoweredByHentai

Capcom: We shall celebrate Megaman’s 25th anniversary with a tombstone.  If that’s not enough, we shall have a figure of Megaman touching a spike.

    /has-low-expectations-about-capcom

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q6NXXGMO5XNSMJ64NIHYHFP56A Vince

If Capcom does pull that off, might as well ship the corpse to Keiji Inafune as a message..

      • PoweredByHentai

There won’t be corpse.  Megaman always explodes into multiple shiny balls of light.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q6NXXGMO5XNSMJ64NIHYHFP56A Vince

          Game-wise, yes.

      • alundra311

Just wondering, since I’ve read that Keiji Inafune was a character designer on the first Mega Man game, who actually created Mega Man and designed the gameplay?

  • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

Megaman been dead to me since they canceled Megaman Legend 3. They probably do a shoddy job in their 25th anniversary game (if it is a game) like they did with their iPhone release of Megaman X.

Seriously Capcom just sweep Megaman under a rug and forget about it.

New game in the classic series where you play as Dr. Wily’s deadliest robot yet “Spike Man” on a quest to destroy Mega Man.

It ends with a R.I.P. for the entire series.

  • http://www.facebook.com/cbosak1 Christopher A. Bosak

    Dear CAPCOM

Get your Sh&t together i’m so fed up with you milking the SF & especially the RE franchise which should’ve ended with RE5. I demand MEGAMAN X in Ultimate MArvel vs. CAPCOM 3 Arcade Edition. I know they’ll release this version at some point.

  • Draparde

I doubt there’s anything they could say that people would not try to read too deeply into lol.

  • Kris

So… instead of griping, can we all take this as a positive?

    No?

Oh well, I’ll take it as a positive. I’m glad to hear that we’re going to see some new Mega Man stuff in the near future. Since they’re talking about where to take the franchise in the next 10 years, I’m assuming that they’re thinking about a potentially new incarnation of Mega Man, which I kind of like.

I personally thought that while ZX and Star Force were good, they borrowed a little too liberally from the Zero and Battle Network games. I’d like to see Capcom try something entirely new, even if it meant taking the series into 3D again (I don’t think that Legends or X7 really transferred the Mega Man gameplay into 3D as well as they could have). Really curious to see what they have in store.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/xxHiryuuxx Hiryuu

Capcom has something to prove.  Color me a pessimist until proven otherwise.

  • Yesshua

Well that’s a very interesting question isn’t it?  What to do with that brand to make it grow and become more profitable over time.

They’ve tried a retro-reboot, but MM 10 didn’t sell as well as MM 9.  That’s moving in the wrong direction.  They made their money but now need to move on.

They tried rebooting the Legends sub-series, but that didn’t pan out either.  We don’t know why, but we don’t need to.  Just accept that they’ve explored that avenue of inquiry and it doesn’t work for them.  Don’t suggest this.

Do you try a whole new take on the character?  Megaman is pretty… different from the top selling games of today.  If you do something new odds are you’ll either move too far away from what pleases fans or be unable to attract a mainstream audience.  Or both.

Do you try the retro-reboot again with a different sub-series?  I don’t think that’s a good idea because retro-reboots sell based on nostalgia and none of the spin offs have as much of that as the original line.  I don’t think going back to the X or Zero continuities would be very profitable at all.

Do you make a game aimed at fans and only at fans?  That’s what Siliconera readers would like for sure, but is that a good idea?  Are there enough fans to make development profitable?  And would you really be able to expand the user base with a game aimed at Mega Man fans?  A game aimed at that audience would need to be hard.  Very hard.

What are your thoughts?  Please don’t rage about Capcom here, I’m looking for ideas about how to make the brand expand and make a lot of money.

    • theworldofnoboundries

Well if u ask me, the reason why MM10 can not sell as well as MM9 is because of the nostalgia effect is dying, people has been always hoping for another good MM game before the 9 and then voila, Capcom give it to us and many old fans were happy.

However that itself cause many of the MMX series goes in rage and said why the hell capcom create MM with a lame graphics.

At this time, MM series fans has slowly but surely becoming Sonic fans where they will complain with any single thing that the company create for.

Example: MMZ-MMZX. (WHat the hell is this Kamen Rider thing????)
MMX-MMZ.(Why did Zero goes into this kind of lame style???)
MMBN(Since when Megaman is about A.I??)
MM9&10(Why in this modern era people still use this lame ass graphics???)
MML(Lol this Megaman sucks as it is not a 2d ones.)

All of the series has their own problem it is just nowadays with Internet people who can voice their opinion is becoming more and more which causes  many of them to express thheir feeling.

The best way to makes fans happy and makes the brand expand? To create more of MM series!!!

With more MM series keep coming out whether it is continuation or it is a new series, It will surely be able to bring more fans to like the franchise.

However what Capcom did now is cancelling MML3 which causes the rage of the MM fans which is indeed one of the worst step that Capcom should take.

    • Quadsdat

So this is where we stand with Megaman today. We want more, but looking at sales more of the same isn’t going to work out (MM(X) , MMZ(X), I’m not sure about MMBN but am inclined to think it is the same). Even as a big fan of Megaman, I wouldn’t buy any of those too. Their charm has worn off and as a game, the latest in each series just isn’t very good, honestly.

So, clearly what Megaman needs is something new. Something that follows modern trends, to appeal to and draw in an audience outside of its core fanbase, and something that retains its spirit to please the fans. Wherein lies the problem, in the opinion of this humble poster. Most of them have already been done before, or wouldn’t fit with the Megaman that each of us have in that little spot in our hearts.

So I have nothing to suggest, except to simply make a good game. But this is why I’m simply a gamer and not a developer. And as a simple gamer, the best I can do is stay optimistic and hopeful that there indeed will be a Megaman in the near future and show my support where I can for it to happen. With any luck, it might be a smash hit or, even better, one that I’ll enjoy.

  • z_merquise

At least Mr. Svensson is letting the fans know that they don’t really forgotten Megaman and that him and the “Top Men” had plans for the character. For me, that’s could be good.

C’mon, they still wanted to remind fans that they still have plans. It’s better than nothing.

There were other franchises out there, whether they’re from Capcom or in other developers, that were completely ignored even after those series reached like 10th or 15th or whatever anniversary.

Just expect something better. I know they (or at least, Mr. Svensson) were all aware of the backlash and hopefully, they were doing something that would make the series fans happy in the end.

Just let it Die, Capcom.  Stop bring it up every god damn time.  Just let Megaman rest with Shemmue, Every Rpg that square has made that isn’t FF, Earthbound (Mother), God Hand and a few others.  We don’t want you doing another X6…especially without Inafune

    • Testsubject909

Capcom: Hmm… It appears they don’t want another X6… What could that mean? Oh, they don’t want another 2D Megaman? Okay, we’ll try to do X7 right!

They just need to hand Megaman over to Cyber Connect 2 or Platinum Games.

    • Spirit Macardi

Yes, definitely CC2! They could make a great Legends 3 just by using the game engine from Solatorobo.

    • epy

A CC2 Megaman would be so awesome.

    • theworldofnoboundries

I think giving Megaman to Nintendo is also not such a bad idea seeing how Nintendo is quite familiar with the series while….. i will say no for Platinum games even though the game they release always consist new concept, they are more into western and modern style of gaming.

  • ShadowWolf

Yesshua raises a good question, well, many good questions.

i think another 3D megaman game might be the way to go (thats not Legends) (well that, or port as much of Legends 3′s data as possible to another console, but i can’t imagine that being a good idea)

so many questions that need answers.

  • papuruka

Either outsource development to WayForward, something regarding Legends 3 cancellation (and how to gain the fanbase’s trust after that horrible incident), or nothing.

Don’t know about you guys, but the guys behind the Devroom thing were pretty sure about what they were doing before it got cancelled, so something else must’ve happened other than the story they gave us.

It is more likely that they look into the mobile phone market since it is growing extremely fast. Micro-transactions always come in handy.

    • Guest

You’re just giving them ideas! Next thing you know there’s a “gritty” reboot of Mega Man, where a young angsty teen-robot must battle an army of robots in Reality-topia.

      • Exkaiser

It’ll just be a reskin of Resident Evil 4. Megaman will be Leon, Roll will replace Ashley, and Wily will be Salazar. Krauser will be replaced by Bass, and Wesker by Protoman.

They won’t even change the weapon system or the enemy types.

        • mikanko

          What happens with Ada Wong?

Oh, and please tell me they keep The Merchant.

          • Exkaiser

Well, the Merchant would be Auto. Ada would be… Cossack’s daughter?

  • http://twitter.com/seph_luis_br Luis Camargo

    Simple:

-Continue with Legends 3, making one version for 3DS other for Vita
-Sell past games via PSN, Live or Nintendo Network. I mean all series: Megaman, Megaman X, Battle Network, Zero, and so on.
-Create a 2D HD game for PSN and Live or Retail
-Make a new series with a focus on gameplay (platforming, action and exploring)

    • Exkaiser

Sounds like a list of ways to throw away money.

      • http://twitter.com/seph_luis_br Luis Camargo

Hardly I would like to see it like that. Legends 3 could be continued and ported for the Vita. If the game is well done, there’s no reason to believe it would not sell on both platforms.

Past games for games archives, psn classics, etc could come with some money at low cost. If Capcom could sell the Battle Network or Megaman Zero series to 3DS users, I bet many would buy it.

And I would hardly call making new games as ways to throw money away. A series cannot survive forever on past content.

        • Exkaiser

Releasing things on Game Archives/PSN Classics/Virtual Console/etc nets an entirely negligible profit. It’s profit, but not a whole lot of it. Not enough to fund the other radical ideas you’re proposing.

Restarting Legends 3, and then pouring even more money to port it to the Vita and then even more money to develop two different versions (because the hardware is sufficiently different enough) wouldn’t lose them money? It would be nice to live in this fantasy world where this is a rational and profitable decision, but I’m afraid we don’t.

Making a new series is a pretty reasonable idea, and they’ll no doubt do it sooner or later, but their last few attempts (Star Force and ZX) petered out extremely quickly. It won’t do them any good to make a new Megaman and have it die after the second game.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see the franchise revived in all sorts of ways. I love the Blue Bomber. I just don’t really think the ways Megaman fans are proposing are reasonably sound.

        • Guest

Legends being revived for the 3DS? Sure, it could happen, very difficult but not imposible. Now, ported for the vita? Forget it, all big games released for handhelds are going to the 3DS for the next year at least, if not more. The vita, just like the psp, is starting in second place, a very far second place from where the 3DS is right now. The userbase of the vita right now is so small, it’s going to take a lot of time for it to grow.

    • PrinceHeir

i want a Megaman game with the Metroidvania style of play!!!

  • EDGEucator

How about you guys don’t plan a thing & hand the franchise
over to either Nintendo , Platinum Games , Inti Creates  or Intercept
    (Inafune’s new company).That would be a huge , reassuring Birth-Day
gift for Mega-Man & the fans/supporters/ex-Capcom employees who have
    worked on the franchise.
Capcom has fallen & will continue to. I’d rather see the franchise
struggle in 1 of the 4 names of companies I’ve listed above , who are
talented & have brilliant minds in their field(s) , than with a
company who gives little f**k about their job , which is to make
“quality” & “fun” “games” deserving of each title(s) status’.
    It’s not a hard job/lifestyle if it’s what you’ve always dreamed of
doing or went to school for.

Which reminds me not too long ago I visited a hobby shop and they were selling 1/10 or was it 1/8 scale model kits of Classic MM, Roll, and Protoman. Judging by the box it looked like new releases and the price was around 35$ each.

They’re pretty recent, just came out last year.

They also made a MMZ-style Zero.

It’s weird that they have no games announced this year for megaman. I wonder if they forgot the anniversary lol.

…. So, basically, they had nothing planned and now that people are calling them on it, they have to rush something out by the end of the year.

    Noodleman for Megaman 11

  • Testsubject909

Hmm… What could we do to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Megaman?

We’d need something grandiose, something that truly encapsulates the influence that Megaman has had over the gaming industry and gaming culture across the year. Something that respectfully provides memories and gaming goodness to all, something that is in itself a self aware celebration of all that is Megaman.

Perhaps… Something that takes in the entirety of the Megaman Universe… Hmm… Wonder what game we could make… Nope. Nothing comes to mind.

The fanbase does have a good reason to be pissed, although I have to put out that some of these childishness I’ve seen from people after two canned game, not all of them, but let’s just say some people who commented several things that is ridiculous to no end.

It sucks a lot of a** that two cancelled games leaves a horrible taste in our mouths, especially after several megaman games have followed up to this point where it is uncertain of anything for some people anymore.

Megaman 9 and 10 were great games even though 9 fared well than 10. No denying that. ZX series was fine in itself, although it would kill them to finish the story they started at some point after leaving us with a messed up cliffhanger for those who beat ZX on Expert mode.

Star Force was..okay, just okay. In a sense, for a game that is similiar to Battle Network on another take. They did just fine.

I could go on with any series, but the point of this is whether if Megaman will still come back swinging. I still hope so, unlike those who already considered the Blue Bomber to be dead already to them, just beating themselves till they bleed.

Megaman had a lot of okay games, even when it had its lows and still held on. When Sonic started to struggle with bad games, it took Unleashed and Generations to get him back on his feet. During those times, some people wailed on the hedgehog constantly saying he’s s**t and that the franchise was dying and some crap like that. What I’m seeing is similiar because of two canned games on Megaman’s side.

There are reasons why games ended up bad or cancelled for some reason, any business issues, ideas that struggled which eventually ended up didn’t work, financial issues, and no fresh ideas are such reason why games of any kind struggle. And people blame bad games on the developers. (To note, it is STUPID AND SILLY TO GET MAD AT A FICTIONAL CHARACTER FOR BAD GAMES WHEN IT WAS THE DEVELOPERS WHO MESSED UP.)

    “TOP MEN”?

It’s funny because that was the same thing a fat guy from Indiana Jones said to try and convince Jones that the Ark was being examined…by “Top Men”. But in reality, the Ark was locked away, never to be seen again. THAT’S probably what Capcom’s doing with Mega Man.
