Miyamoto Working To Find The Next Big Nintendo Hit

Last month, Nintendo Senior Managing Director, Shigeru Miyamoto, shared in an interview that he would be taking a step back from supervising Nintendo’s development teams, and instead, focusing on training the company’s younger employees.

Additionally, Miyamoto also expressed a desire to work on his own, smaller projects, either by himself or alongside the younger staff that he intends to train.

That having been said, smaller projects or not, he’s still searching for the next big Nintendo hit, he says.

“I am spending more time than before on finding new ideas for new developments rather than focusing my energy on work in my (development) teams in order to solidify the contents of (existing) franchise titles,” Miyamoto shared with Nintendo’s investors during a recent Q&A session. “After all, developing big hit titles must be the solution [to Nintendo’s ongoing financial losses].”

He continues: “I am acting with the understanding that one big hit title can change multiple phases of a situation in the entertainment business, and I feel that finding such one big hit is my basic job.”

With regard to how he sees the company’s younger staff progressing, Miyamoto says that, in the case of recent graduates, he believes that college grades don’t really matter in the long run. Instead, he believes it is the kind of work they do while actively involved in game development that shapes their abilities.

I’m just hoping for some substantial titles because the 3DS had a rough start without a Mario or Zelda game.

This new hit will be something similar to the Miis, and Wii Type games. In this day and age it’s hard to have a break out character type of game. Something were you are the character will attract more people to the game. So it may not be Wii U Sports, but something were the gamer is the game main character.

It would be nice if Nintendo would do a real RPG franchise in the same vein as Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy. It really seems like a huge gaping hole in their offerings.

Mario and luigi and Paper mario are both really interesting (and fun) takes on the genre. In fact, paper mario is my favorite rpg series to date :P

Eh, I never really liked the Paper Mario series, however, the Mario RPG on the SNES is wonderful. Too bad they don’t make them like that anymore.

Mario and Luigi is fairly similar.

While that’s pretty true, I personally think davidvinc’s idea is pretty nice. An actual first party RPG that’s entirely original. Technically Golden Sun is something like that, but that’s not exactly first-party.
I’d love to see Miyamoto’s take on a more traditional RPG as opposed to Zelda’s action RPG style.

“An actual first party RPG that’s entirely original.”

Isn’t that exactly what Xenoblade was? Considering that Monolith Soft is a first-party studio now, I think they’ve got that area covered.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up for Miyamoto working on an RPG, though. He said he’s looking to figure out what the next big hit will be. It’s not going to be an RPG. :P

I wonder what Miyamoto is capable of making now. He made mario and Zelda with only a few years of game design experience, i’m sure that after 30 years he must of picked up some new tricks :P

Wii Sports and Wii Fit were the culmination of that 25 or so years of experience, I think. After you’ve done it for over two decades, I can understand not being interested in making “traditional” games anymore.

So something other than Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, and Kirby?
How about a hulking mass of flesh and / or a guy in a futuristic suit that runs around with guns blazing? It worked for Microsoft…

In 2014 Miyamoto announces a game that redefines the FPS genre. Celebrations are held.

is it me or the man never made one mature 18+ title..?

    • Azuku

No, Miyamoto’s games definitely tend to shy away from the erotic content.

  • theworldofnoboundries

Well anything new that Miyamoto comes out is already gold for me lol. Like how on the old the Sega times, everything Yu Suzuki comes out is gold to me.

    Mario Western.

(That’s technically still Mario and not a new title but damn, that would be a hit. Now hire me Miyamoto-sensei.)
