Why Did Natsu Replace Taki In Soulcalibur V?

By Ishaan . January 31, 2012 . 2:02pm

In a behind-the-scenes video, Soulcalibur V director and producer, Daishi Odashima and Hisaharu Tago, give some insight into how they went about deciding upon new characters for the game.

In the case of Patroklos and Pyrrha, the two were chosen because they were Sophitia’s son and daughter. Sophitia, having a connection with the Soul Edge and Soul Calibur, plays an important role in the series, and her children gave the development team a reason to continue the Soulcalibur story.

The decision to include Natsu came from deciding that Taki would likely be too old to be a ninja anymore. In Odashima’s mind, you can only be a ninja up to a certain age, after which you retire from active duty and focus on training younger ninjas. While Taki has retired, she’s still watching over Natsu, he adds.

You can watch the video in its entirety above. More behind-the-scenes videos are included in the collector’s edition of Soulcalibur V.Why Did Natsu Replace Taki In Soulcalibur V?

…which is why it’s totally fine that Taki’s replaced by Natsu in my opinion.

Well, that surely didn’t stop him to put Ivy.

Oh, well, “Dos tetas tiran más que dos carretas”, as they would say in Spain…

    • godmars

Like her pirate father at this point, she’s probably undead.

Also don’t forget she made her own sword by putting a demon in it.

Taki got old and  Talim? I don’t know why she inst in the game

No sabia que ese dicho era de España :p . But yeah, that sounds like the main reason.

    Poor Talim fans……

  • RaikageV

Sorry, but that was kinda boring.
I don’t mean the video itself but the way they are talking about it. They should be more energetic and shouldn’t talk about some random reasons why Patroklos is the new main character (“Because he is Sophitia’s son”… yeah sure, they could’ve also make him Siegfried’s (or any other character’s) son. There wasn’t a real explanation. (though I don’t need one)).

  • mdarkprince92

It only makes sense, not that I don’t love her 100 pound boobs bouncing around in a fight, a girl CANNOT be so agile with those things being that big. This new ninja Natsu makes more sense as a character.

I miss Setsuka. She’s the biggest troll character, after Raphael. (In fights, anyway.)

    • http://twitter.com/JezzSan Jezzy

DLC perhaps! They already found Zasalamel’s character model on the disc so the rumors about previous characters returning as DLC may have some credit after all.

  • Herok

i know as a talim fan that they were saving her for the being the second dlc character for the game or at least i can dream

  • Hours

It’s weird that they say they are focusing more on the story this time, when it’s already been confirmed that this has the least expansive single player content of the series so far.

Characters don’t even have individual endings and a lot of the roster have very little impact on the story mode itself. (Which happens to be quite short.)

This is really disappointing to me since the reason I like Soul Calibur so much is the characters and their connections. Especially since they are introducing so many new characters, it’s a shame they really didn’t get very much exposition. (Plus leaving out super obvious additions like Bangoo and characters fans have been clamoring for like Hwang was really lame.)

I’m still excited for the game since the fighting mechanics and the CaS system are apparently the best in the series, but I’m hoping they’ll see all the disappointment about the lack of story and single player content and release an upgraded version with more modes, endings, characters, etc.

    • OverlordZetta

The connections are there, you don’t have to worry about that, just not as… open ended as they were. You see them from the perspective of the story, y’know? I admit, they could have done better, but they certainly didn’t do BAD, I think.

And even WITH multiple endings, I don’t think anything could be as lackluster as IV.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Mc-Devitt/100002626261475 Stephen Mc Devitt

Too old? They mean unattractive because who wants to play an old hag with saggy (can’t say next word). Taki’s fit, I’m sure she would’ve still be attractive at the age of 46 (a milf minus having children).

To all Talim fans out there, why not try ZWEI a bit? His weapon is a bit similar to Talim’s. Just a suggestion.

    • Setsu Oh

u cant be a ninja that late. not as nimble and agile asbefore

  • http://www.genkaibreak.com Code

I don’t think that has anything to do with anything, because if you ask me, half the playable characters from previous games hardly aged in a consistent manor any ways o~o’ Honestly the fact they shelved half the cast blows my mind xpx’

At least SCIV will have the nostalgia factor with it’s near complete cast. On top of that I feel some of the new additions really miss the point of Soul Calibur. I thought it was about a clash of weapons; I feel like Zwei and Viola, using a werewolve ghost and magic ball miss the point T3T’ (Although I do support the idea of werewolf ghosts, just not in this capacity zoz;;)

But yeah I think I’m just done with Soul Calibur for now, all I asked was that the mechanics get reworked, and from videos it looks like they’ve just added another layer of gloss to the same system we’ve been playing since SC3 o~o”

    • raymk

Viola does use a weapon besides the orb she uses claws on her hands as well or do people forget that?  Also a magic ball used in the way she’s using it in is a weapon.  Either way they did change up the gameplay and I don’t know what you wanted them to change.

      • http://www.genkaibreak.com Code

Although they did do a few things with the gameplay, I feel like the series just needs to be overhauled. Not on a cosmetic level, with changes like characters ages; but on a very basic level; with focus on game balance. The cast doesn’t have to receive cuts to make the game different.

And yeah true Viola does use the claw on her hand, and Zwei uses that bladed tonfa; but the focus is definitely around the orb she manipulates as a projectile in 3D space, and Zwei’s ghost werewolf thing. I mean I don’t think her concept is bad (I feel like Zwei is though o~o’) but I just feel it’s more out of place in a game that focuses on what is essentially sword fights. But then again we are coming off Darth Vader and Yoda as characters *shrugs* so you’re probably right >w<'

For a franchise that hasn’t been fun to play since the Dreamcast original. Then hasn’t been interesting since the exclusive PS2/GC/Xbox characters game. I would say does anyone really care about the ins, and outs of this game.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

Someone obviously didn’t own a PS2 to play Soul Calibur III, which was the height of the series.

      • Luna Kazemaru

        clearly he has not.

      • Gatchaman1

I did not care for that one actually as many did not either. SC  & SC II. SC for DC is what put SC on the map with its perfect score.

        • Nemesis_Dawn

I will give you that Soul Calibur 1 is better than Soul Calibur II.

          • Bio_liquid

Soul Edge > All SCs due to nostalgia

      • kupomogli

Soul Calibur 3 was the series decline.  Almost all characters were simplified and downgraded, a lot of attacks from Soul Calibur 2 being removed altogether.  Soul Calibur 2 was well balanced also, and then with Soul Calibur 3 they threw it all out the window.

Soul Calibur 4 is even worse than Soul Calibur 3, and Soul Calibur 5 might not do any better.

        • Nemesis_Dawn

For me, the awesomeness of the story mode and the vast amount of options in CaS is what made SCIII the best of the series for me. Plus, my two mains played great in it, Ivy and Astaroth, before their moves were changed too much in SCIV.

      • OverlordZetta

Gotta agree with you there. With the dozen or so extra “characters” added by custom fighting styles and all the single player stuff to do, that one’s still hands down my favorite.

    • Dantis

You have very strange grammar usage.

And yeah, I think so. I know a few people who are super pumped for this.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

Not to mention, you certainly care enough to make a post about it. Though it is one of your usual “It’s not from Nintendo, so it’s crap” posts.

  • http://twitter.com/xerosbeat Nelson Ocasio

Well didn’t Tira try to make Sohpitia’s children the new host of Soul Edge in one of the games? I think that’s the reason right there, they have been a target of the blade since they were babies.

  • Nemesis_Dawn

Personally, I’m more curious as to why there’s so little single player content this time, considering that Soul Calibur was the game that defined what single player fighting game modes could be and one of the biggest complaints was how sparse the story mode of SCIV was. To not even put individual endings for Arcade mode is just lazy. I’m very glad I heard about that before I dropped $60 on this.

    • Chiupon

The main storymode actually had promise — but then it ends. There are so many plotholes, and it only focuses on Pyrrha and Patroklos. If the attention they got in the storymode expanded out into ALL of the characters each getting scenarios like that, it would probably have one of the best story modes in a fighting game. :C but it falls short because this game is basically half-finished.

      • OverlordZetta

I do agree that it was short and it left a lot open. I don’t think it was half-finished, though, but more like an experiment, maybe? Testing the waters of their new world and all. They really amped up customization some, and for the characters it DID focus on in the story mode got a ton of focus – maybe not enough to be worth the story mode of a story based game, but then, this is a fighting game, right?

Maybe VI will fix that, maybe not, but I don’t think it’s half-finished at all. It has a polished fighting system, decent online, the story has a boatload of cutscenes, and there’s a good deal to do in single player. Still doesn’t rival II or III, I admit, but we’re getting there.

        • Nemesis_Dawn

When there’s twenty something characters and the story mode only focuses on 3, then yeah, it’s not finished.

          • OverlordZetta

Lacking might be a better word, but we still got a complete story around the one set up and all.

  • PrinceHeir

well they plan to make SC VI-IX so i don’t think anyone should worry about other characters not appearing.

just got my CE of the game and will watch it there :D

sadly the way they put the disc is disappointing since they are using some sort of cotton like thing to hold over the disc instead of the traditional plastic holder in most media cases.

definitely can be frustrating at times since sometimes it won’t hold it good and might fall out if you open it in any way.

  • http://talesattbokmph.wordpress.com/ Setsuryuu (TBOkmph)

Well that makes sense. You can only do those Taki jumps that goes higher than your own height up to a certain age.

…Actually I don’t think you can do them at all. Oh he says that! (“superhumans”) Good. Does that means Taki still appears in the game as Natsu master or she “is the master but don’t appears?” I hope she does, cuz I got the impression that Taki, even 17yrs older, is prettier than Natsu…

I just want to see this whole thing of the relation of the swords finally cleared! And I mean in a proper way, with fun storytelling! You can do it! xD

People missing Talim, lol.  My main was Xianghua and Leixia is already out so I’m good. xD But what about Cassandra? She had no kids all that time huh?

  • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.dickenson1 Shawn SomethingOtaku Dickenson

simply the game was rushed and taking out fan Favorite is a bad idea the story mode is short  and single player mode is a let down

    • OverlordZetta

RUSHED? Are you nuts? This is a million times better than IV was. It’s got more depth and character than it ever hoped to have, and it opened up a whole new world that future sequels can live and grow in.

What they did was not only a fantastic idea, it was pulled off tastefully and done without most of the crap that comes with a timeskip.

If anything, what’s a letdown is reactions like yours.

      • Nemesis_Dawn

Being a million times better than IV is not a hard feat. It’s like saying being stabbed in the foot is better than being shot in the stomach. Sure, I guess, if I have to choose between the two, the foot thing won’t particularly kill me. But I’d rather just not be assaulted.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Morandi/100000837836996 Daniel Morandi

I can jut hope to make another sexy female ninja using Natsu style and being prettier than her.

  • pockystix

I wouldn’t mind old lady Taki

again, I think we need more Genkai like ladies in fighting games

  • http://twitter.com/AwesomeWillv1 Will Gonzalez

I have no problem whatsoever with Natsu replacing Taki, but that reasoning makes no sense. They brought Maxi and Hilde’s old asses back for another game.

    • http://twitter.com/GameGodZER0 Ben Sylvia

Maxi has the same excuse as Ivy, Soul Edge fragments.
And Hilde can come back because she doesn’t do acrobatic leaps over her enemies heads now does she?

    • http://twitter.com/TimeSage Kevin Lazar

Hilde only had one game under her belt (one and a half if you count the PSP port). Her returning did not surprise me.

  • shy_mel

It’s odd he says that because the art book that comes with the game says Taki is on a mission and Natsu is looking for her.  Not too old to take on missions but too old to be a ninja?

    • JustThisOne

Recon duty! Probably stalking Mitsurugi or something. Nothing too strenuous.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

Because Taki would’ve been too old? No offense, but I find that an odd reason. Oh well. I’m loving Natsu anyway. Farewell, my beloved Taki. You will forever be missed……T-T

    • Raharu95

Completely agree. She is my favorite character.

    • http://www.facebook.com/VirusChris Christopher Nunes

Yeah, I’ll miss Taki as well but Natsu is shaping up nicely as Taki’s successor. Did you get SCV Michael? Which version did you get? I got the PS3 version.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

I don’t have a PS3 yet, but my eldest sister (Tabitha) has the PS3 version so I’ll be playing on it.

        • http://www.facebook.com/VirusChris Christopher Nunes

Cool! I finally manage to beat Legendary Souls… which took me about 45 minutes to beat… god the AIs are cheap! And I’ve unlocked all characters.

I look forward to challenging you online! Also did you get my message on YouTube?

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

            Yes, I sent a reply.

        • http://www.facebook.com/VirusChris Christopher Nunes

Cool! Let me know what you think of the chapter when you have time! ^_^

    • z_merquise

Too bad Taki wasn’t here but you know what’s worse for me? No Talim. And no Amy (she’s my main in SC 4).

Still, I’m very excited for this game. Really looking forward to use my other favorites and try the new characters especially Viola and Ezio.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/Kamek20xxExtra?feature=mhee Michael Stevens

I love Talim and Amy (especially Amy! My main too), so I’ll miss them greatly. I don’t dislike any of the new characters at all though (I’m loving Viola, who will most likely be my main).

  • Souji Tendou

Taki’s busy finding ways to decrease her bewbs size, that’s why she’s not playable. She’s disturbed by the facts that they’re always get in the way when she’s fighting. :p

    • ddh819

i forgot who Taki was, so i did a GIS. What I saw was… unexpected.

      • Souji Tendou

        What did you saw? O_o

  • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

“Taki’s too old” is just an excuse for why they kicked a great character out of the series for their original-character-do-not-steals. From the very moment they announced the premise, a 17 year time skip, it was blatant the sole reason they did it was to have an excuse to get rid of the majority of the series’ characters, particularly characters they personally don’t like.

I can say without a single shred of uncertainty that Daishi knows “Taki’s too old” is complete bull, too. Back when everyone was asking about Taki’s potential inclusion the first time, Daishi outright said something along the lines of “Taki’s getting pretty old now, but then ninjas are very superhuman.”

tl;dr Daishi is making up a half-assed excuse for why he replaced a character he has no respect for with the shitty animu chick of his dreams.

    • OverlordZetta

Honestly, this is probably for the best. IV had a solid conclusion, and other than an all out reboot, this is probably one of the best and even most original things they could have done. It’s pretty damn rare for games to pull timeskips, and after actually playing it, I have to say that Soul Calibur did a damn fine job of it. A tasteful one as well, as opposed to some of the usual “okay it’s been a few years now people are older let’s continue with the same old/same old” that we see so often.

I know that haters will hate, but cry less, play more, and chill out. It was this or likely NOTHING, and with THIS, the series might just have been revived for a lot more sequels to come, and that’s worth losing a few characters (most of whom’s fighting styles ARE still around/are otherwise mentioned in the background) in my book.

      • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

So many people play the “at least we got something instead of nothing” card, and I disagree with that notion completely. After the past eight years I’ve seen of how Squeenix has treated their games, I’ve learned one valuable lesson: it’s better for a series to die with dignity than live in disgrace.

When I supported a return of Soul Calibur, including signing Daishi’s petition, I was supporting a return of Soul Calibur, not Daishi using it as a chance to kick out characters he doesn’t like and forcing in his own creations as replacements we’re forced to accept.

But more to the point of this specific game. One, it’s not just “a few,” it’s most of the old roster that got cut out. Having their styles in the game is meaningless, because it’s still not the same character. Natsu is not Taki, but she DOES come off as a frankenstein of ripped off (if slightly tweaked) gameplay style and new, awful personality.

And second, and far more importantly, time skips are an abysmal, completely unnecessary plot device. You want to change the roster? You can do that easy without the time skip. Instead of jumping ahead 17 years as an idiotic excuse to replace a majority of the old roster, gradually replace old characters with new ones. Give the old characters a nice, big send-off in the story that honors and respects their contributions to the series, while simultaneously introducing their replacement in the same game, as a playable.

If this game is the future of Soul Calibur, then Soul Calibur is forever dead to me. It’s been replaced by Mortal Kombat both for gameplay AND story anyway. Great gameplay built by listening to both competitive gamers and series fans, combined with finally making good use of franchise lore, while honoring the series’ past and characters. The latest Mortal Kombat is a shining example of how to do a modern fighting game and a reboot the right way. Soul Calibur V, nope.

        • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

          @  Salarta
Nice, hating on “Animu Chicks” and then go to “I love senseless violence instead of boobs”. Why not try “Something Awful” or other “I love Guns and hate good looking Women” forums?

          • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

            You’re welcome!

You see, I don’t hate “animu chicks” in and of themselves. I’m buying Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk-2 for example. But “animu chick” is what she falls into, and it doesn’t fit this series at all.

          • OverlordZetta

The way you phrase that, it sounds like you’d be fine with her if she had had black hair.

          • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

OverlordZetta: Nope. The principle of the issue is that no matter how Natsu looks, Daishi is using a timeskip as an excuse to justify removing a great character just to insert his own creation, with no respect granted to a character that started the series. The fact that Natsu comes off as an anime chick just further highlights how horrible this direction is.

But I’ll be honest, I might have even accepted Natsu if Taki got the respectful send-off she deserves while introducing Natsu. It would have been a sign that Daishi in turn respects the series’ past but it needs to move forward, and Taki isn’t going to live forever. Daishi chose to try and force Natsu on everyone, and because of that, I choose to not accept her. Bring back Taki and do it right next time, then I’ll give Natsu a chance. The same goes for the rest of the roster, though just bringing back Taki and Sophitia and doing their send-offs right would be sufficient for me. I do not require every single character back, but at least respect toward the two women that helped to start the damn series.

And I know about a certain development in SCV. That is not sufficient, for many reasons I’ll refrain from saying so I don’t spoil the game for everyone.

        • OverlordZetta

This… honestly isn’t even worth replying to. I’d bet dollars to donuts if everyone had magically been able to be included along with the new roster, you’d be singing a completely different tune, mm? This has nothing to do with the direction of the series, this is all about some characters not being there anymore. Boo freaking hoo.

All I can say is you’ll be missing out, but you won’t be missed.

          • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

            Haha, wow.

I’d probably complain about Setsuka’s exclusion, but it wouldn’t be anywhere near as strongly voiced as here for a key reason: Setsuka isn’t important to the Soul Calibur universe. She’s my favorite character, but even I have to admit her reason for being there was fairly shaky in the first place, and it makes sense to remove her.

It makes no sense to remove characters like Sophitia and Taki but keep a character like Ivy. That’s blatant favoritism and bias.

I wouldn’t expect you to care what I think, considering you don’t seem to care about the series much anyway. Not if you think kicking characters like Taki out of the series for half-assed reasons just so she can replaced with someone new is justified. And I know that Daishi doesn’t care either, if he did then he would have shown more far respect to Sophitia and Taki when making this game. I’m still going to say my piece about it though, since I did care about this series enough to buy and play SCII-IV, and I loved the series when it was still good.

Enjoy helping degrade what was once a great series, I’ll keep on buying games made by people that care about the series and characters they’re using.

          • OverlordZetta

I would just like to go on the recording saying that I happen to love this series and care very deeply for it, thank you very much.

As for the rest, well, I’m done replying to your rude and childish, not to mention flat out insulting and accusatory, nonsense, so good day to you.

  • Letiumtide

I was just having a discussion the other day about the gaming industry’s fear of putting any woman above the age of 30 in any real central role and if they are, they’re usually evil.

As somebody who’s just passing my mid-20s I’m noticing that my age group as a woman is becoming less and less accessible.  I doubt this is something that will ever change, but I can’t pretend that it doesn’t miff me a little (not continually, just sometimes).

    • OverlordZetta

Well, to be a little fair, Sophitia was probably at least AROUND 30 before they finally gave her the boot. She’d been a mother for… all of the games? At least since II from what I remember, but given the time period, I suppose she could have been a younger mom.

Not that I really can say I appreciate how they’ve been handling her wardrobe over the years, but still.

And Tira, who is in the game, should be over 30 now since she was in her teens in III/IV as well?

Your point is a good one thugh.

      • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

She was single in the first game. She met Rothion, her husband, after the first game, I believe. It was about Soul Calibur II that Sophitia took on the mother category and Cassandra replaced her in the role of young Greek maiden. Cassandra also completely replaced Sophitia for the arcade version, before Sophitia was added back in for consoles.

  • ShadowWolf

too old to be a ninja?

i hate to use this as a example, but did any of these guys watch Naruto?

did they see the 3rd Hokage fight?

  • OverlordZetta

“After which you retire from active duty and focus on training younger ninjas. While Taki has retired, she’s still watching over Natsu, he adds.”

I don’t mind that. After the initial shock of losing Taki (and after meeting Natsu in-game), I happen to be fond of Natsu, and what’s more, this storyline doesn’t say she’s dead or anything like that. She’s not gone guys. She’s fine. If anything, it means that we’ll see her again in a sequel with an altered, more “mature” fighting style or something, along with other new/returning characters.

In any case: Props to Team Soul for having the balls to do something new and creative, and do something few devs would dare to in fear of risking their fanbase. I hope this pseudo-reboot does fantastically, and we see a Vita spinoff and maybe even SCVI set in this timeskip soon in the years to come, expanding and fleshing things out that this game has just started to delve into. They did a great job, and it was a real treat after the sort-of flop that I felt IV was, and this was just fantastic, and I’m already eager for more.

    • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

You see it as “having balls.” I see it as being dicks.

They could have easily evolved this series without spitting on the past characters. They could have removed the characters by giving them a send-off in Soul Calibur V while introducing their new characters. They deliberately chose to disrespect the past by kicking most old characters out of the roster abruptly and trying to force everyone to accept new ones they didn’t ask for.

As long as Team Soul is going to behave this way, act like characters like Taki are used up old hags that don’t deserve to be respected as anything except background fodder for their precious original characters, I’m not going to buy the series. There are still other series out there that treat their characters and history with more respect, Mortal Kombat being the shining example for fighting games. A complete overhaul that refreshed the series and brought in astounding numbers of new players, and its roster is all characters that were in the series from its first three games, with brand new characters only provided as DLC.

      • OverlordZetta

I call it having balls because that’s exactly what it was. The fact brats like you are running around replying to just about every comment defending it is probably proof of that.

Nothing was spit on, and the timeskip was done extremelly well and tastefully. Amount of content in the story mode aside, which is another issue entirely, this was probably the best thing that could have possibly happened to the series. Another repitition of the same story wouldn’t have done anyone any good, and making a game solely to prepare for the one you really want to make just doesn’t make sense when you can go right into the game you want to make and do so just fine.

Taki may return someday, or maybe she won’t. Either way, this is Soul Calibur as it is now, and hopefully for the future, maybe through to VIII, until we get another timeskip or even change out time periods altogether and be given an entirely new roster and story.

That IS evolution, like it or not.

        • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

Okay, I’ll admit one thing: it does require having balls to be so openly disrespectful to a series when making a sequel.

A time skip is never needed. There is always another, more respectful way to do these things. Daishi chose a disrespectful direction.

You act like a repetition of the same story is inevitable without a time skip, and that’s a ridiculous notion. It’s entirely possible to provide a new story not revolving around the swords, or using the swords in a different way, without kicking out most of the roster to do it.

This is not Soul Calibur. Heck, even Daishi didn’t think this deserved to be called Soul Calibur. His original suggestion to the company was naming it Soul Edge 2, which I’ll admit would have made me more forgiving, but not by much.

As for my response to you down lower, yeah, I accused you of not caring about the series. That’s kind of what happens when you respond to someone’s legitimate gripes about a game with remarks like “cry less” and “Boo freaking hoo,” calling them immature or a “brat.” It breeds a negative impression. You don’t like me saying that you don’t like or respect the series? If you’re going to try to frame my criticism of Soul Calibur V as nothing more than childish, immature whining by someone that simply can’t handle having old characters replaced, then too bad. I responded in kind. I probably should act better than that, but I’ve lost the ability to do so by having it worn down over the years by situations like this one.

  • d19xx

Taki DLC, that’s the real reason….

  • ResidentMetroid

They should just bring back the old characters when they were in their prime. The only reason I didn’t get this game was because Taki wasn’t in it and some old favorites. I know Natsu has Taki’s fighting style but come on, that doesn’t work for me. Its like changing from a brand name cereal to a bootleg imitation cereal.

NOOOOOOOOO T^T Aww, well. She deserves her rest. I shall remember her fighting along with another people. I hope Natsu is awesome as Taki is. :D

  • theoriginaled

I really wish people would just let the series evolve. Does everyone really like playing the same characters over and over and over? I mean. You still have sc4 right? If you want to play as the old cast pop it in!

    • OverlordZetta

Agreed 1000% This is the best thing they could have done.

    • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

There’s a difference between a series evolving, and a series being made into something else completely because a couple guys saw it as an opportunity to force their personal desires into it.

All Daishi had to do was give one more game that gives a nice, big send-off to the characters being removed, while also introducing who will be their replacements at the same time. Provide a final game for Taki to show how awesome she is while also playable, at the same time as introducing Natsu, then next game Taki’s gone and only Natsu remains.

Instead, they just went “lol screw Taki, I want my made up waifu in there, let’s do a 17 year time skip as an excuse to force Taki out of the game.” I have no respect for that attitude, and I certainly don’t want to buy a game created from it.

      • OverlordZetta

I’m pretty sure the only one getting upset about waifus one way or the other here is you, and it’s kind of ridiculous. This is evolution. Yes, they could have made another game for that sole purpose, but that would have just been delaying THIS game even further and would have been a rushjob. This is what they wanted to do, possibly what they NEEDED to do to save the series after IV, and they did it in a pretty damn good way.

If you don’t like it, that’s your own problem, but don’t go assuming things and putting words in peoples’ mouthes like that. You don’t even have the right to not respect them with how childish you’re being.

        • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

Evolution is gradual, not overnight. Evolution would have been slowly phasing Taki out and phasing Natsu in.

All they needed to do to save this series was make sure the gameplay is great, and treat the characters better in story mode. If we assumed SCV’s logic was sound, the new Mortal Kombat should have been a critical and financial disaster for repeating the past and using all old characters.

And hey, another remark about me being “childish” because I have a complaint and I’m voicing it. How about that.

      • Bakuryukun

uh…I don’t think that would be to good an idea, seeing as the series moved away from clone characters in SCIII. I’m sad to see Taki go for sure, but Natsu is a fine addition to the roster, and Taki is her master, so she is still going to get her dues, so I gotta say I can’t see the issue.

Besides that, the series has done this before, the change from Soul Blade to Soul Calibur was pretty huge as well, many characters got dropped and/or replaced, so are you saying they disrespected the series there too? I have a hard time believing that since it’s one of the most well loved in the franchise.

That being said even more than Taki, I’m really sad to see Seong Mi-Na go, especially since I’m unsold on Xiba as her and Kilik’s replacement. Oh well, that’s what Character Creation is for.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eugenio-Gil/100000517635083 Eugenio Gil

Funny thing is that was the original idea when they made Soul Calibur. They wanted to bring a new generation and replace the old but in the end all the characters returned except one Li Long. Heck supposebly the reason he didn’t make it was because of some problems implementing the dual nunchaku moveset at the time.

        • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

Taki being her master just makes Taki into background fodder.

And saying having, say, both Natsu and Taki playable in Taki’s send-off was me being fairly generous about the idea of giving Natsu a lead-in; my personal suggestion would have been just introduce that Natsu exists in the game that lets Taki go out with a bang, while making it very very clear that Natsu will be taking her place in the next game.

The change from Soul Blade to Soul Calibur was also a change in name, and likely a change in direction as a whole too (I haven’t played pre-SCII). In addition, that was early in the series. Things are very, very different when a series is starting out. When a series is starting, you don’t have a legacy of games behind a specific character, and you could even do each new installment with a brand new cast or even a brand new world (e.g. Final Fantasy). It’s different from Soul Calibur V, which at this point certain characters had 4-5 games under their belts and stood out as iconic of the series.

Which I mean fine, yeah, I can get wanting to replace those characters to show the series is more than just Sophitia or Taki. But they can still do it by giving those characters one last chance to shine.

Besides, the presence of Ivy, Siegfried and Mitsurugi defeats that argument for me. If this really was about letting the series progress with new characters, none of them would be in the game. Those three, and others, were chosen either because the team liked them, or the team felt they needed to retain the most popular old characters to keep people buying the game. If the philosophy is “this series is more than its most iconic or popular characters,” then in theory Ivy and her boobs should be gone more than anyone else, since she’s the first character anyone thinks about when this series gets mentioned.

      • http://shinsua.deviantart.com/ Shinsua

Alright, I really need to ask this, because otherwise it will just bug me and cause me to read the rest of your posts in a rather urked and unfair manner:

If the timeskip had been handled differently, how would you feel about just that- a timeskip?
Rather than the timeskip being Soul Calibur V in itself, what if it had started with the events that took place before those 17 years? The war that seemed to wage, and the destined battle that at long last took place between Siegfried and Nightmare concluded as the premise of the beginning of the story. Not some simple cinematic introduction to SCV’s story mode, but the premise of the first few “missions” of it.
As the feud finishes, and the victor stands tall, the curtain falls, and the next scenario takes place that 17 years in the future.
Taki’s retired, training new ninja. Setsuka’s set down her sword, her master not avenged, but her spirit settled. Zasalamel, killed once more by Soul Edge and Soul Calibur, but once more born into the world, still in youth. ( Though, I don’t know why he wouldn’t be playable; there are other characters younger than 17. ) Yun Seong… gone for whatever reason… Seong-Mina… gone for whatever reason… *wink*
What if all of those characters had received, no matter how “crappy” each cinematic or stilled picture and semi-literate text might be, a reason for disappearing after the skip?

        What would you then think?

        • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

I’d still feel the same way.

A time skip is a lazy excuse to justify a “new direction.” When used at its best, it’s merely an annoying roundabout way to effect change that could have been done just as fine without it in the hands of someone that actually knows what they’re doing. When used at its worst, like this game, it’s an excuse to throw away 75% of the roster, most of which is full of perfectly fine characters just requiring better representation, just so the people doing the project can shove their own creations in there as replacements so they can feel like they’re being “creative” and “unique.”

I did think of one very, VERY rare case where a time skip is actually justified: modern day settings. Specifically, I’m thinking about the Parasite Eve series, though Resident Evil would fit the bill too if there was a gap in time. If Parasite Eve 3 or something like it is ever made (3rd Birthday doesn’t count, it’s the exact opposite of everything Parasite Eve and Aya Brea), it would make sense to jump to present day, since the core of the series’ setting is seeing the game’s events happening as if they can take place in our everyday lives.

          • http://shinsua.deviantart.com/ Shinsua

Heh… I see… Can’t really say I’ve ever once heard of someone thinking of a timeskip as something like that… But, if a skip were to occur in Resident Evil that caused a character or characters that seemed relevant to the plot to either disappear, die, or become unable to perform- you would feel the same detest, no?

Oh, and if it marks any interest for you at all, Setsuka herself may not be in V, but her style still is and is available for create a soul.

          • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

I would be fine with a character being retired as long as they were treated with great respect for their tenure with the series, in short.

      • http://shinsua.deviantart.com/ Shinsua

I’d also like to add that Ivy’s still in the game because she’s immortal. She also has a standing in the story as possibly the most powerful alchemist at the time. Her alchemic ability also plays a role with the two spirit swords.

        • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

Ivy is only immortal because this team decided to make her immortal to have an excuse to keep her around as playable.

If you can claim Ivy can be immortal, then any woman, or any character for that matter, can be made immortal and kept in the series forever. Sophitia? Soul Edge altered her body so it will never age. Taki? Her ninja training or her daggers keep her body in peak physical form. Ivy? Alchemy. And Sophitia and Taki have at LEAST as much standing in the story as Ivy, if not much, much more. Yet another of a long list of reasons Daishi’s decisions here are ass.

          • http://shinsua.deviantart.com/ Shinsua

Just want to note that Ivy stopped aging in Soul Calibur II.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Idk what you are talk about honestly because you don’t have to remove old cast members to evolve the game at all. Story wise sure but you can still have them in the game arcade wise. Blazblue killed off Nu-13 yet she is till in the game just in an unlimited version of lamba she is somewhat of a copy in paste but still is there for the fans of nu to play as. I think that’s the point that people getting at.

Edit: I also find it hard to believe that people are saying this is evolution. Yet Ivy is still in the game aswell as a number of others.

      • OverlordZetta

BlazBlue isn’t over a decade old either, nor does it have as nearly as large a cast of playable characters, not to mention that if it DOESN’T kill off at least one character with how their storyline is developing, they’ll have lost all credibility as writers anyway. Plus, BlazBlue was in the middle of a plot – it had no NEED to evolve. Soul Calibur concludes its story practically with each game. It DID need some kind of evolution, drastic or otherwise, and this was a pretty tasteful, well done one.

Plus, in Nu’s case… Nu and Lambda are kind of the same person, so that didn’t exactly change much. I won’t get into BB talk, but really, that’s just a bad example all around.

        • Luna Kazemaru

leaving the blazblue plot aside I still have to state my point is the reasons for it story wise is fine but arcade mode as in where story doesn’t matter at all is iffy very iffy. I can understand if the timeline in development was short sure but I can understand why people disappointed they cut out characters that they liked claiming that they are evolving the game. Games can evolve while keeping fan favs in the game MK does it aswell as SF.Not against making a good story but its just my 2 cents.

      • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

Not to mention both that Nu was the boss character for Calamity Trigger, it was the first game in the series, and Continuum Shift highly suggests Nu will return.

Blazblue’s also a very respectable fighting game, though on a personal level I’m miffed that Kokonoe got passed over as playable in favor of Makoto and Platinum. Especially Platinum. Platinum is the first and only character to date I’ve flat out hated because of the character herself. Still, people have different tastes, so meh.

Platinum getting in before Kokonoe is one of those few cases where I feel I overreacted. I’m still willing to get the next main game though even if Kokonoe still isn’t playable. I just wish she was.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eugenio-Gil/100000517635083 Eugenio Gil

Why would anyone want to play SC4? Plus wasn’t SCIII the last game that had all of the cast… a pity they never released the Arcade Edition of SCIII for consoles :’(

      • OverlordZetta

IV has mostly everyone, I believe? I can’t think of anyone offhand who got cut out from III to IV except for all of the custom fighting styles that cut out, which was a travesty in and of itself. I’d need to double check, though, it’s been a while.

      • http://twitter.com/salarta salarta

I found SC4 disappointing as well, mostly because there was no actual story mode, but I’d definitely say it’s better than how SC5 is shaping up to be. At least SC4 had that bit of respect of including the characters that are important to the series’ past.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IB6XWGVQOD2XCH4ER7NYKK2A2M Shuyai

does Soul calibur actually have story plot? i alway think of it as setting or excuse for fight

    • OverlordZetta

It does, actually. You couldn’t really tell in IV, but earlier games definitely shone with the single player story experience. V has a pretty good story, length and whatnot, but it only focuses on two characters, with the rest just being there as characters in the plot as opposed to having their own story mode.

This is preferable to, say, how IV handled things, with cookie cutter story modes consisting of four fights or something and virtually no depth at all, but older games had arcade modes with endings for each characters and then story modes in addition to that – V has neither.

It’s as if with the addition of online, the need to have a deep single player went down drastically.

      • http://twitter.com/TimeSage Kevin Lazar

Half of them weren’t even in the plot. Lizardman, Yoshimitsu, Mitsurugi, Hilde, Cervantes, Ezio, Dampirre, Raphael, Algol and Kilik don’t even appear (Though being secret charcters those last two have an excuse, as does Dampire, being DLC, and Ezio does as well since he’s a guest) while Viola and Edgemaster appear but don’t fight.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

You’ve never played Soul Edge or any of the three Soul Calibur games before IV then. The story in Soul Calibur was always the best part.

  • 128bitigor

This is some lame excuse to replace one of the most badass characters in the game with some crappy Gyaru derivative. Ivy with a bust like this should have a serious back problems at this stage.

I have no interest in SC5 any more, after the stellar 2 the series plunged down in terms of gameplay. Definitely going to pass on this one.

That is probably the least funny thing I have ever, ever seen on this site.

  • Nemesis_Dawn

I see so much arguing about whether or not the timeskip was a good idea or not. I just find it funny that with all that debate, they didn’t take the time to develop every character enough to determine whether or not it was worth it. With no individual endings, the game could take place the day after IV or a thousand years later for everybody but the three characters it touches on in story mode. The timeskip literally means nothing for anyone but Sophitita’s children and Zwei.

  • xxx128

First of all pixels dont age. And second i just want to play a good game. A deep game. A fighting game with deep play mechanics. Ok wrong address….
Any way taki was a somewhat fun character. Sorting her out because of !age” sounds pretty stupid to me. She will probably back as DLC. Greedy bastards…

  • protofox

after fighting natsu repeatedly i want taki back. taki had class, she was mature a great body even if its pixels..but this natsu..she thinks shes all that and the type of cocky little teenage girl i wanted to walk up to in high school and just slap the crap out of her. which by the way i do quite often when i gotta fight her online. ughh… shes in my top 3 most annoying and disliked characters in a franchise.

  • thebanditking

Why do I get the impression that the underlying truth to his comment is Taki would be too old to be attractive anymore. I find this ridiculous, but its fairly common in games and Japan anymore, with characters getting younger and younger while their designs are just as revealing. I am just glad they left Mitsurugi and Siegfried in as they are my favorites. As I have gotten older I want games characters to do the same.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/6BHXSH6OJHJLCTQXXTQ7V2TON4 Kyle D

This was the first game I purchased for my PlayStation 3 a few days ago. I absolutely LOVE the Soul series. It is one of my favorites. But I was largely disappointed by the characters in this game. Now, I agree with the person that is stating that removing key characters like Setsuka, Taki, Sophitia, Cassandra, etc. is a bit harsh. I feel it takes away from the series. Not because they make the game what it is, but because a lot of fans love these characters. The last Soul game I owned (and still do) is SC III. I loved every character. On the other hand, I agree that the Soul series needed a change. The repetitive, “Destroy the sword.” story was getting tedious and worn out. But I also agree with having the original cast in the beginning of the game. Have the good characters be in a final showdown-like war against those working to spread evil. But have the story end up time-skipping 17 years into the future and introduce the new characters. Each character needs a gentle and subtle fade out of the series. However, this isn’t what was done. Instead Taki fans, Sophitia fans, Cassandra fans, Amy fans, etc. are left to ask, “Where did they go? Are they dead? Are they coming back?” People need closure, per se, to be okay with the removal of integral and well-known characters that we have grown so attached to throughout the series. I know I was a bit disappointed to see Taki, Setsuka, Amy, Xianghua, etc. removed. So hopefully, the next game gives its fan that necessary closure.
