New Final Fantasy X Will Be An HD Remaster, Not A Remake

New Final Fantasy X Will Be An HD Remaster, Not A Remake

In September 2011, Square Enix announced at Sony’s PlayStation Vita conference that they would release Final Fantasy X for the Vita and PlayStation 3, to celebrate the game’s 10th anniversary. At the time, we referred to the game as a “remake”.

This isn’t quite the case. Final Fantasy X will not be a remake, it will be an HD Remaster, similar to other PlayStation 2 titles (the Metal Gear Solid and Devil May Cry games, for instance) that have been given high-definition PlayStation 3 ports in recent times.

Taiwanese website, Gamer, got the news at the 2012 Taipei Game Show straight from Square Enix’s Shinji Hashimoto (via FF-Reunion), who told the site: “It’s being developed as an HD Remaster, but the visuals will be much more beautiful than before. Please look forward to it!”

Prior to this, Final Fantasy X producer, Yoshinori Kitase, told M! Games magazine in Germany that Final Fantasy X for Vita and PlayStation 3 is early in development.

as long as it is the international version which never got a stateside release i am good.

  • Raiu

When FFX was to be a remake, I said “hell yes!! PS3 and Vita!!”
Then this, now to be a HD remaster, “What the!! Okay, I can deal with it.. ”
Let’s just hope that SE don’t get sloppy with this remaster just like the HD remasters of Splinter Cell(terrible framerate)….

    • BadenBadenPrinny

      Oh goddess, I hope not

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=509331050 Kelsley Campbell

I knew it wasn’t going to be a remake. There would have been WAAAAAAYY more hype if it was a remake.

  • Gatchaman1

Realistically in the back of my head I expected this but being that is WAS S-E we’re talking about here who always used to go big in the graphical presentation, I was hoping they’d break the norm and go for broke and to a full remake, so…

    Son I am disappoint. : (

  • Loran Cehack

Why don’t SE just create new games. I don’t get it. I feel like they can create newer titles. With all the time spent remastering games they can just create new ones. Are they out of ideas? Where’s the Final Fantasy Versus XIII they promise us 6 years ago? And I bet it’s not even going to be that great from what trailers we saw. *Sigh* SE needs to be SS again.

    • http://twitter.com/Linka13 Linka

I don’t mind the remakes, myself. And it isn’t like they haven’t made new games in recent years– they’ve been working on FFXIV to improve it. They’re developing Dragon Quest X. FFXIII-2 just came out. There’s that Bravely Default game that looks interesting for the 3DS. Dream Drop Distance is coming. Actually, looking at their list of game releases– just from them, too, there’s a lot more new games recently than ports.

The biggest ports I see are, of course, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy IV, and Final Fantasy X.

I want FFXIII Versus as much as anyone else– heck, I am far more interested in it than XIII, but I think it’s unfair to say that they’re out of ideas for new games– especially when they’re developing games like Bravely Default.

SE is a huge company you know. They have different departments handling different stuff. Versus XIII is a whole different team from those making XIII and the X Remaster and other stuff. They’ve got the manpower to do multiple stuff like this so it really isn’t wasting time. It’s more like buying time.

      • Loran Cehack

They should put all that manpower together and create a really good title that doesn’t have Final Fantasy in it and isn’t filled with 10 hours of cutscenes with near perfect symmetrical proportions. And not worried about how good their sales are. But like you said SE is a huge company. It can’t be helped. But to put your trust in them.

        • http://twitter.com/Xuiz enorka miho

it is easy for you to say when you are not part of the working team.. Manpower does not come in a flick of a hand.. And Sometimes, there are morons who will stop your progress… They just flat out refuse to let you do what is deem right..

Anyway, I see no problem for SE in having to create the most beautifull cutscenes… It is part of FF and also their beauty since the beginning of their fame.. So don’t you dare tell them to take that away!

          • Loran Cehack

            Your right.

    • pockystix

Honestly, this whole big deal they made with the 13th installment is getting really old. . . like, 6 years ago.

XIII was pretty bad, Agito-XIII (type Zero) is ok, but damn annoying, and Versus XIII is pretty much a no show. . . fashionably late to the party. . . or just trying to un-invite itself. And don’t get me started on XIII-2. . . as if we needed more XIII. . .

And what purpose did this serve? FFXIII on it’s own sold well (and cheap at all the used bins in Japan), but all it did; even according to Square, was contribute to the damaging of the Final Fantasy brand name as a whole. And while XIV was atrocious, it wasn’t the sole culprit to the growing apathy gamers had towards Square and to FF’s woes.

Hell, I remember Square going out of their way to market the game here, as NOT being an RPG. . . oh, that’s cute. You spent years, and possibly millions of dollars building the RPG community in the West, struggling until FFVII really broke into the mainstream. And as soon as you have a strong hold of your fans, even after showing that games like FFVIII and X are tolerable to a bunch of them, you say your next FF game is not really an RPG!~

Sometimes it’s a little bittersweet to be a gamer. . . and a fan of RPGs; before they were really all that well liked. God, I remember having to convince people that they were fun, basically getting people to buy Square products. A lot of good that’s done me. . .

But maybe they’ll turn it around with Versus XIII. . . in 2024

      • Loran Cehack

Agreed. I think I should just give up on them. My life is in despair.

  • heartless141

don’t need a remake imo, the game was as good as ICO on the enjoyable aspect. flaws are overshadowed by other good aspect of the game.

  • http://twitter.com/DanijoEX DanijoEX

Ah the heck with it. Whether I get this HD Remaster or the original PS2, it ain’t much difference (other than playing on different systems).

I’ll change my thoughts on it if I choose to.

  • http://twitter.com/AnthonyFoster5 Anthony Foster

So it’s a remaster, but still doesn’t include X-2. Every remastered game this gen comes with at least one other title, but somehow Square is allowed to be the exception to the rule.

    • d19xx

Because FF fans will cough up the dough even when it’s sold separately.

      • BadenBadenPrinny

Not to mention SE is a bad company these days

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

And I thought it was a remake. F*** this s***, I’m going home.

  • http://twitter.com/thesupersakura Kristina Wright

I’m still buying it..FFX wasn’t my first FF but it is definitely one of my favorites.

  • Alex

I’m fine for a hd remaster but i hope it’s not at full price, most hd remaster got 3 games or at least 2 like silent hill, so i really hope to get 10-2 along the 10.
And come on a good reason to sell it would be a complete version, so i want the 2 games with the prologue of the 10-2 who was in radiant historia, plus i want international version of the 2 games with japanese and english voice, this should be the minimum.

    • http://twitter.com/rokuso3 Victoria

I totally agree. Not a remake and only one game? They should include X, X-2 and XII to make it remotely interesting.

  • eilegz

i hope it bundle X-2 and X international edition

  • http://twitter.com/EdgeKun Ed Powell

    And like many before me, all I ask is that it’s the International version. ;_;

  • Bio_liquid

As long as I can get my Dark Aeons, and make it slightly easier to obtain “synth” items you can have all of my Rupees Enix.

    • glemtvapen

Jeez, you suddenly reminded me of the nightmare of dodging 200 lightning strikes in a row…

I do not like to do that again.

      • BadenBadenPrinny

I honestly never bothered to do it, Lulu wasn’t worth the effort

        • glemtvapen

Maybe. But I was a completionist back then and if I ever pick this up, I may do so again for nostalgia’s sake.

  • http://twitter.com/mimiko_kupo Mimiko ♥

As a remaster, I would mind if they added some more extra stories on the each other characters. Like, more about the other world. Would also be great to see a cameo of Paine and the other characters from FFX-2 as well. If not, this remaster is just a sad remaster.

    • http://www.facebook.com/juan.m.m.s.mdp Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Remasters aren’t about adding content, just enhancing visuals / sound and sometimes only one of those~.

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

I definitely wouldn’t want this comment to turn into one of these “I told you so” moments but…yeah, it was pretty obvious from the start that a remake was highly unlikely. At least I never got my hopes up for that, I’ve always assumed it was but a simple PS2-PS3 HD port like all the others we’ve been getting.

  • Enma_Kozato

I lost my disk for X right after diving into Sin, so I’ll grab this when it comes Stateside. I can’t wait to hear Suteki Da Ne again.

    • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com Taijutsu-Joshua

Wow. You and I stopped at the same place.

  • jujubee88

I have never completed a “Final Fantasy” title, is “Final Fantasy X” a good start?

    • badmoogle

Yes it is.Each main game stands on its own.

    • kyuketsukimiyu

It depends why you haven’t. If you just haven’t gotten around to it then go ahead and give FFX a shot. But if it is because you hate Square Enix lead males…well…Tidus is one of the worse FF leads (in my opinion anyway)

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1228290322 Elly Honda

Tidus wined a lot, but you can’t lie, that boy got stuff DONE.

        • BadenBadenPrinny

He’s actually my favorite FF protagonist tbh. Then again I was never a fan of the Cloud and Squall types

          • pockystix

I’d say Tidus was the poor man’s Zidane

          • BadenBadenPrinny

Explain, this sounds pretty interesting since I did like Zidane

          • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com Taijutsu-Joshua

Yeah, He and Vaan are two of my favorites, because they were a bit more realistic. Their stories felt ‘coming-of-age’ ish.

    • amagidyne

That depends on what you like. FFX and all the titles since seem to focus on smaller stories. Yes, you have the whole “stop the world from being destroyed due to flamboyant villain” thing, but it takes a backseat to a love story more often than it did in the older games.

All the entries in the series have got that to some extent (well, maybe not the first ones), and FFX isn’t a bad game, I just think there’s more going on in titles like IX, VI and VII.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1228290322 Elly Honda

I believe FFX will be a great start for you!

    • pockystix

if you want a great example of FF, play IX

      it’s 10 bucks on PSN

    • http://twitter.com/AzureCrash Richard Engle

X is actually really, really bad in the story department. The ending made alone made me facepalm so hard that it shook my brain loose.

The battle system is amazing though.

    • http://twitter.com/ifarah12 Gren

The FF fanbase is pretty split so i’d say find out on your own.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

As long as I get the international version it’ll be enough of a reason to go back to it.

  • badmoogle

    Still day one.

  • brian yep

    I doubt it’ll include 10-2.
I get a feeling Square wants people to forget about it.

    • http://theurbanmission.posterous.com Joshua Miller

While I also don’t doubt it won’t include FFX-2, I don’t see why square would want people to forget it about. The game had good reviews (85 Average on metacritic) and sold more than 4 MILLION copies. Plus…it was fun, so there.

  • http://twitter.com/Xuiz enorka miho

Right… I care not of whether its HD or remake.. The only thing the matters allot to me is fix the bug and have their CG cutscenes or movies on par with what we had now.. And I am NOT speaking of the in-game type.. I wanted the full movie type CG.. Super lush and mind blowing!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kevin-Miranda-Salazar/643669155 Kevin Miranda Salazar

I could’ve sworn they said a remake in another interview :/
    Hype -20%

Well I wasn’t expecting a “ZOMG SE, DOO EET WITH XIII GRAPHICS AND RE-DO AAALL THE GAME AGAIN!! :DDD” but I thought it would had graphics updates more or less like what Ninty did with Zelda OoT, basically the same structure with updated 3D models.
But aanyway, I hope they fix some lip syncro in the cutscenes, if this turns out to be the international version (Without X-2 please!) then I’ll buy it once I have the chance! :P

  • http://orangtunes.blogspot.com BIG MAC

Well that was obvious and fine. Now we can make room for that Final Fantasy IX remake lol.

  • Joanna

I like FFX, but I’m going to pass on this. I never buy the same game twice unless it’s a full out remake and even then it’s only for stuff I really like. I love Devil Survivor but I didn’t get Overclocked for the same reason. Great for everyone who hasn’t played it yet or wants it in HD though. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Max-Lestage/100001999473380 Max Lestage

Wow, did the number comments just double in size since yesterday?

  • BadenBadenPrinny

As much as I would have liked a remake IX deserves one a lot more. My dream of them never remaking VII and VIII may still come true

  • BadenBadenPrinny

Honestly, IX was the only good PS1 FF

EDIT: Aw balls, this was meant as a reply

    • pockystix

       it was the best

and it holds up the most. But I wouldn’t say FFVII is bad, just highly overrated.

      • BadenBadenPrinny

Yeah, these days I’d probably say that VII is either mediocre (a step up from bad) or decent

    • http://twitter.com/ifarah12 Gren

IX was definitely my favorite of the 3 but VII was great and VIII was alright.

    • SanoDragoon

One name: Vivi. That should be enough.

  • BadenBadenPrinny

I can definitely see what you mean, X may be my favorite 3D FF but I acknowledge that there certainly are better ff’s out there

EDIT: Same with this one, I’m terribly sorry for this posting mess

  • http://twitter.com/ifarah12 Gren

Now the only reason to get it is if it’s the international version.

  • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com Taijutsu-Joshua

Can someone explain to me the difference from the regular and international versions?

    • gundamfan

international version is has more boss fights such as dark aeons, new sphere grids and other stuff.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tien-Ron/100001474007360 Tien Ron

As far as i remember we got all that, did we not?

  • Ryos

My interest level just went from meh to no, but I didn’t like FFX.

  • Covnam

In what ways were people expecting this to be remade? When I heard the original announcement I always thought that it would be along the lines of the other recent ps2 re-releases, better visual quality, but that’s it. I’m not sure in what way people would want the game changed… It’s not like FF III for the DS where you can remake a 2D sprite game into a more modern 3D game. I suppose if people were unhappy with specific features/gameplay in the game that could be changed, but that would probably just upset those who did like it.
I hope it will be the international version as well, I’d like to play that extra content that never made it to the US.

  • RupanIII

Figured as much, a remake seemed like it would be hard and take a long time. I couldn’t get into X the first time, perhaps I should give it another go.

Back then, I felt like X was implementing some not so great changes to the FF formula. Looking back, seems quaint in the face of what was to come (XIII, XIV, etc.) lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joachim-Varne/1640586412 Joachim Varne

I hope they will sell this budget-priced. HD Remaster or not, PS2 games will only sell if they’re MAX 15$. But knowing Square-Enix, this may not be the case…

  • http://twitter.com/VasiliiHellsing Vasilii Hellsing

Plz at least add New Game+ option. Maybe it’s for good that it’s not remake, don’t want ‘em to Ruinga my favorite game.

And I wonder if by more beautiful visuals he meant that they will just replace LQ char models with HQ models. Still better than nothing or… FINAL FANTASY X with FINAL FANTASY XIII graphics. *keeps dreaming*

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tien-Ron/100001474007360 Tien Ron

well, i hope it it is a *Remaster* i hope it’s a visibly one where you can actually tell the difference, but lets see how it goes
