The Amazing Spider Man Lead Designer Promises Free Roaming, Side Missions

Activision’s next Spider-Man title is The Amazing Spider-Man, which ties into the upcoming movie of the same name starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. The game is being developed by Beenox, who previously developed Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Spider-Man: Edge of Time. Up above is the very first in-game screenshot of the title.

The Amazing Spider-Man takes place after the events of the movie, and will be a free-roaming game set in Manhattan, with the inclusion of side missions for the player to discover.

Replying to a fan query, the title’s lead game designer confirmed over Facebook: “Our game brings back free-roaming in Manhattan, where you guys will be able to swing around and discover a variety of side missions, challenges and mini-games in addition to the main storyline.”

Meanwhile, the game’s art director shares that The Amazing Spider-Man game is being developed with a more “realistic” mindset than previous Spider-Man titles.

“We approached the villains and many aspects of this game with a more ‘realistic’ mindset,” he writes on Facebook. “The game features exciting new interpretations of fan-favorite Super Villains, and all-new villains created specifically for the game. We’ll reveal them in the upcoming months!”

The Amazing Spider-Man will be released this summer on the Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 3, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS. You can watch a trailer for the game here.

so those robots in the trailer are supposed to be “more realistic?”

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

      It’s all relative!

    • z_merquise

Robots!? You mean like the one in this video?

      YEAH YEAH YEAAAAAHHH WOW!!
      YEAH YEAH YEAAAAAAAHHHHH WWWOOOOOOOWWW!!!

      • aoihana

I thought you were going nuts! (*^ワ^*)

        That was awesome, thanks! (◕‿◕✿)

      • Gatchaman1

imagine if that was a secret bonus unlock? That’d be awesome

  • http://nocturneadagio.blogspot.com/ LainaLain

I hope this is one is as great as they’re making it sound. Usually, games that are based off of movies suck, but maybe this one won’t.

  • kupomogli

People like Marvel Ultimate Alliance, but overall I think the only good Marvel game that Activision has developed has been X Men Origins Wolverine.  Despite the crappy graphics and that the game dragged on a bit long, the combat, although never really expanding, was fun from the beginning to the end.

I don’t know if free roaming will work…

    • aoihana

      Why do you think that?

I haven’t played a Spider-Man game since the PSX days and the most recent one I’ve played was Spider-Man: The Movie on PS2. I thought the free roaming was awesome! (◕‿◕✿)

Then I’m told that in the newer Spider-Man games, you could actually go down on the streets and not die. (*^ワ^*)

      • Gatchaman1

         Play Ultimate Spider-Man 2

        • LynxAmali

           ……….

There is no Ultimate Spider Man 2. There is Ultimate. There was no sequel. -_-

Which is sad. Considering that was the best Spidey game next to Spider Man 2.

          • Gatchaman1

             oops

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, I’ve been wishing they’d do a sequel to that forever. I actually preferred it to Spider-Man 2. It was everything I loved about 2 and then some. Playable Venom story>>>

          • http://twitter.com/Zufield Zufield

So does that mean we’ll be playing as Miles Morales in the sequel?

            Sign me the hell up.

          • Solomon_Kano

@twitter-60931763:disqus That would certainly be interesting. If the game were a direct sequel that wouldn’t work, but otherwise that’d be freakin awesome.

  • Crimson_Cloud

I doubt we will get a Spiderman 2 treatment. There is a hope…

  • aoihana

“Our game brings back free-roaming in Manhattan, where you guys will be able to swing around and discover a variety of side missions, challenges and mini-games in addition to the main storyline.”

I suspected as much, but it’s great to have confirmation free-roaming will be a feature. That’s just awesome, I love to explore, so I’m definitely much more interested. (^v^)

Looking great so far, I’m excited, anyway! (◕‿◕✿)

  • SolNeko

hope they dont screw this up like every other spiderman game after spiderman 2 and ultimate spiderman

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

I prefer we’d have less and less “distractions” than in Spiderman 2.

      • Solomon_Kano

Yea, those happened a bit too frequently. I’d say that Ult. Spider-Man pretty much fixed that though. I thought so, at least.

Give me those Symbiotes! Venom is fine, but Carnage needs some love!

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Do we want more symbiotes already?! They’re kind of overused, don’t you think? We just had Web of Shadows, after all…

I feel like every time they shove Venom into another Spider-Man game forcefully, it makes it feel a little less special. I still remember how being able to play in the black suit was such a huge deal back in the days of the Activision PS1 games…

      • Solomon_Kano

If they can do the symbiotes successfully, I’d be all for it. Otherwise, I agree that they should probably leave that alone after Web of Shadows.

        Monster Ock on PS1>>>

        • aoihana

I loved the PS1 games! I remember playing them so much! I don’t remember which level, or game, rather, but there was one where you infiltrate into a lab, or office, or something! (^v^)

Anyway, yeah, sorry, I just got a surge of nostalgia. (*^ワ^*)

          • Solomon_Kano

It’s cool. That (if you’re talking about the first one) was my favorite Spider-Man game, so every now and then that nostalgia hits me too lol.

There were 2 of them, but I’d assume you’re talking about the first one. I played little of the 2nd one but, from what I played of it, there seemed to be more outdoor parts than in the first one so if you were infiltrating an office…

            This level perhaps?

          • aoihana

Oh ~ Yeah! I remember that now! Freaking Scorpion! (。>。<。)

You know, I still have my PS1, I think I should replay it sometime!

I only played a short demo of Spider-Man 2, it came with a magazine, if I remember correctly! I played it so much, and I was a bit careless, back then, honestly. I remember when it got so scratched up, I couldn’t play it anymore. I was very sad! (´_`。)

I think I was real traumatized by that because I now treat my games like they were gold plated. (*^ワ^*)

          • Solomon_Kano

@aoihana:disqus Ha. Yea, all of my old games are still playable but seeing how scratched they got certainly encouraged me to treat them better moving forward.

I don’t have my PS1 anymore, but I’ve been meaning to buy this game for ages. Thankfully, PS1 games can be played through my PS3, so I’ll probably still get it.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Office is definitely the first one. It was the bank if I recall correctly? There was a bank heist and you had to enter through the ventilation shafts…

          • aoihana

Yeah! I remember the ventilation, which is what lead me to think infiltration. (*^ワ^*)

        • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Oh man, Monster Ock was great. That was a fantastic way to end the game.

On that note, I loved how much variety there was in that first PS1 game. Remember the chase levels with the helicopters and the SWAT team shooting at you? That was fantastic. :)

          • Solomon_Kano

Ahhh. Yea, that’s why it continues to be my favorite Spider-Man game. The helicopter part was so memorable to me. Above even the variety in the missions, I loved the variety in the level designs. Going from the Bugle to the sewers to that building infested with symbiotes. It was awesome.

Makes me kinda wish Activision would let Treyarch try their hand at another Spidey game.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

Yeah, what I wouldn’t give for another really solid Spider-Man game. I guess part of the reason that first game was so cohesive was because it was more or less based off the 90s cartoon, which itself was great. It gave them a reliable art direction/world to fall back on.

Games are kind of the last bastion of hope for me as far as Spider-Man goes these days. I know Marvel needs to keep selling books, but lately, it’s like everything they do to Spider-Man is terrible. The One More Day story with the marriage retcon was the final straw for me. I just couldn’t take any more after that.

After that, I figured I’d just keep reading Ultimate Spider-Man. And I did… until they went and did a real number on that recently, too.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christopher-Carmona/100000347329518 Christopher Carmona

I wasn’t interested in Web of Shadows. Carnage barely gets recognition aside from that silly Edge of Time game. Shriek and the others too. Despite being overused, they’re still fan-favorites. The other villains never really had much appeal for me.

        • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

I agree about Carnage. He’s definitely underused. The only game in which the other, more minor symbiotes got any exposure was Separation Anxiety and Maximum Carnage. Never played MC, but Separation Anxiety was great. :)

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christopher-Carmona/100000347329518 Christopher Carmona

Yeah, it was a great game. The Lizard could use some love, too. >:

  • ZBaksh386

    Can’t wait to see more.

  • Solomon_Kano

Booo for more realism and YAYYYYYY for free-roaming.

I wasn’t feeling the giant robot in the trailer so, if that’s their idea of a more “realistic” approach then, well… screw that.

  • neetyneety

    Free-roaming? SOLD! (who doesn’t love free-roaming?)
