Psychonauts Developers Turn To Kickstarter To Fund Classic Adventure Game

Psychonauts and Brutal Legend developer, Double Fine, have started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a classic point-and-click adventure game. Development of the title will be headed up by Double Fine founder, Tim Schafer (Grim Fandango (above), Day of the Tentacle).

The Kickstarter goal for the project is $400,000. So far, fans have managed to collectively contribute about $100,000. Once the goal is reached, development of the game will be carried out over a period of 6-8 months.

Contributors will have exclusive viewing rights to a monthly video documentation of the game’s development process, as well as an opportunity to beta-test the game. Once development ends, they’ll get a free copy of the game, as well as other rewards detailed on the Kickstarter page.

As of now, the game, tentatively titled Double Fine Adventure, has only been announced for a PC release via Steam, but other platforms such as iPad might be a possibility, considering Double Fine say they will use “modern touch technology”.

Seems like this is what they decided to do, Notch will probably donate. Sounds much better than him doing it alone.

       But… but I wanted Psychonauts…

    people, donate money…….like now.

I really dislike how he abandoned PC and now only comes back to PC once he finds out that people were willing to pay for his games in the first place. I’ll buy it when it’s released probably because the idea of a beta for an adventure game is a bit silly, but I love Ron Gilbert so I’ll just wait it out.

Donate. DONATE. I mean, seriously, for only $15, you get a Steam code for the full game when it’s released and access to the beta.

I like Double Fine, but I don’t play PC games. I’d contribute if it were going to come out for something I’d actually own. Even the Vita would be enough.

They’re already at $320,000, it’s incredible! I wonder if they’ll really keep the kickstarter up for an entire month. XD

I guess it’s like pre-ordering the game before it is in development.

Donate, get free game. Buying, if you ask me

Wow, they are almost there. In one day. That’s incredible.

This is gonna be awesome. I’ve given $15, just because it’s Tim Schafer. I mean, a point and click game by Tim Schafer. What else do I need to know? I may not always like his gameplay ideas, but the writing in his games is never anything short of awesome.

I’m guessing this campaign started yesterday (but I just learned about this 2 minutes ago) and it’s already over $440k. I’m still gonna contribute, but I see this campaign raising way more than double (maybe even triple) of what they originally wanted. o_0

This game will need TF2 hats if we were to get the beta on steam.

  • PinkEggsandHam

Wow. It seems they achieved double their goal already.

This kickstarter site seems like something that localization companies could get behind. Instead of negotiating with Japanese companies about the risks of a Western market, why not let the fans vote?

Better yet, they could use kickstarters to get more goodies into limited editions (figmas maybe?).

    • ShadowWolf

      ‘reads it’

      my god………your on to something!

Xseed! Atlus! Aksys Games! NIS America!

for those games your not sure you want to take a risk on, DO WHAT HE JUST SAID!

Speaking in which, how bout’ that HD remastered Psychonaunts? There’s like no excuse for the pace at which things are coming out on PSN (like me missing Psychonaunts the first time around lol). You could even put the original on there.

I think we need a article on why PSN is going so slow with bringing things to the network. I mean PS1 is getting there(Come Onnn~ Legend of the dragoon XD) but they introduced that PS2 classic thing ages ago and I think we have like 12 or 15 titles that half or worth buying atm. A lot of people must be planning HD remakes or something :<
