Rising Star USA Taking Over Marvelous USA Publishing Business

Rising Star USA Taking Over Marvelous USA Publishing Business

There was a time when Marvelous Entertainment (now Marvelous AQL) had a 50% stake in European publisher Rising Star Games. Rising Star was originally established by way of a partnership between Marvelous and Bergsala, a Nordic Nintendo distributor.

In 2010, Marvelous sold their stake in Rising Star to a Japanese company named Intergrow, which handles PC, video and mobile phone games. Despite the change of hands, however, Rising Star retained the rights to continue publishing Marvelous games in European territories, and have continued to do so all this while.

Now, they’re taking over Marvelous USA’s publishing business as well.

Speaking with MCVUK, Rising Star managing director, Martin Defries, says that Rising Star’s recently established North American office was created as the result of an opportunity to take over the U.S. publishing business of Marvelous USA, which is Marvelous’ link to U.S. publishing partnerships.

“We were given an opportunity to take over the US publishing business of our former parent company Marvelous Entertainment, to rebrand that as Rising Star Games Inc and to build a successful subsidiary,” Defries reveals. Defries also shares that Rising Star have partnered with an existing publisher in the U.S., who has “strong roots into the market,” but doesn’t reveal who it is.

Once upon a time, Marvelous USA had a publishing deal with Xseed Games. In 2010, they changed to a licensing model, which meant that Xseed and other publishers would have to bid for rights to license their games. With Rising Star USA now effectively taking over for Marvelous USA, it calls into question whether that licensing model is still in place, and also how this will affect Xseed — which is owned by Marvelous AQL — in the years to come.

Rising Star USA’s very first North American title will be Akai Katana for Xbox 360.

A bow to Denpa no Sekai for the heads up!

Awesome news, usually Marvelous titles find a localization but this is reassuring maybe there’s a better chance of Senran Kagura and Kaio coming out here.

  • Novac

Maybe there is actually a chance we will get the rest of the Legends Of Heroes games.

    • Ladius

This news has nothing to do with that, and could actually further damage the Trails games if XSeed isn’t able to fund SC’s localization because it isn’t able to publish any more Marvelous games thanks to RSG USA (at least they will be able to do GKH, thankfully).

Also, people keep forgetting that XSeed was the only publisher crazy enough to attempt localizing the Trails games, the others simply ran for their lives when they saw how big the scripts were.

      • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

        Umm… about GKH…

        • Ladius

As far as I know GKH’s delay was caused by Vanillaware’s busy schedule, do you think its American rights have been passed to RSG and that XSeed will ultimately get shafted? :(

Maybe I misread the implications of your post, but it would really be horrible to see XSeed treated like this.

      • malek86

If RSG doesn’t care about SC, wouldn’t it be in their best interest to let Xseed work on it? Maybe they can make some money off a license or something.

Granted, that might make it non-convenient for Xseed.

        • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

I think the concern at this point is more about how long MAQL will be willing to fund Xseed’s operations.

        • Ladius

The issue here is that SC’s localization is pretty much lost money for XSeed so far, and at the moment they’re not even sure they will end up releasing the game in any way.

So, if they miss out on easier, more feasible localizations because of RSG USA they will have even less money to spend on Trails, or on other projects for that matter.

          • malek86

That is if you see SC’s localization as a sort of “we are doing it because at this point we have to, even if it means having to eat our profits from other games”, which doesn’t sound all that nice.

          • Ladius

It isn’t nice, but apparently that’s what is going on.

They are translating the biggest jrpg script ever localized without even knowing if they will be able to release the game, when and on which platform, and we’re talking about the sequel of a game that already had an expensive localization and underwhelming sales.

Honestly, I see the fact that they’re still working on it despite those issues as a sign of goodwill on their part, but considering they have to survive as a company they need to have other games to get some cash in the meantime. That’s why I’m worried about the RSG USA situation.

          • malek86

All things considered, if this RSG situation gives them a valid “excuse” to drop SC, that might actually end up being a good thing for them, in the long run.

I mean, the fans won’t fault them for something that is apparently due to outside reasons, and at least they’ll keep their profits.

Sounds cynical? It is. But I really do wonder if localizing SC was a good idea from the start, considering TitS underperformed while this one can’t even be released on PSN. I wouldn’t want Xseed to go down under just because we feel entitled to one game.

  • Raiyu

XSeed is owned by Marvelous? I didn’t know that.

    • CKSqua

They were owned by AQ Interactive. However, Marvelous and AQI merged, which means that XSEED is under their control now.

At any rate, my interpretation is that with the sale and rebranding, Rising Star USA will no longer be linked to Marvelous AQL.

  • Ladius

Ouch, that isn’t the best news for XSeed, I hope this isn’t affecting their business :(

Hm I wonder what this could mean for Natsume and the Harvest Moon/Rune Factory releases.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Ishaan

I asked about that. No change. Those games will continue to be published by Natsume in the U.S. and by Rising Star Games in Europe.

      • puchinri

That seems reasonable but a little unfortunate.

        • http://gloopyeegra.wordpress.com/ Arla

How is it unfortunate? Besides EU version of Rune Factory taking forever to release.

          • puchinri

We still have Natsume handling our localization.
Fantastic job with release dates and preorder bonuses/items. Bad job with translations. . . (among other stuff.)

Xseed and Rising Star USA should merge together.

  • http://eonhack.blogspot.com theclaw

So this is what happened to Marvelous attempting to self-publish in the US… I know I saw their logo on the front of a few box arts, with assistance from Xseed.

  • brian yep

So will it actually be decently active?
The only self-published Marvelous NA thing I can think of was Yuusha 30 XBLA.

  • Somazu

I hope this take over will help speed up the US to EU releases of Harvest moon/Rune factory games as we tend to get them over a year after the US
edit: never mind, natsume handle it in the US so it most likely wont make a difference, although i hope it reduces the release gap between games in each region

    Can anyone say SENRAN KAGURA!?!

    • http://twitter.com/Ale598 Ale598

      Oh hell yes I can.

    • Monkey_T

      Not really.

    • http://twitter.com/SilverCitizen Silver Citizen

That was the first and only game I was thinking about!

    • Darkrise

       Same here.

  • http://twitter.com/Ale598 Ale598

By the way I totally forgot about Half Minute Hero II, I hope it has a better chance of coming out now. :D

I hope Rising Star and Marvelous AQL would finally have a reunion… #inAmerica!

  • darkbartz

Hmmm, does this gives Luminous Arc 3 a slightly bigger chance of being released? …What? I can dream too, y’know…
