Yes, Square Enix’s Sleeping Dogs Is True Crime: Hong Kong

By Ishaan . February 8, 2012 . 9:00am

Yesterday, Square Enix announced a new title — Sleeping Dogs — slated for release on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. We suspected this game might be the title formerly called True Crime: Hong Kong, and it turns out that it is.

Set in Hong Kong, Sleeping Dogs has you playing as Wei Shen, an undercover cop attempting to take down the Hong Kong triads from the inside. Last year, we shared pages from the game’s script, which give a good idea of the tone of its story.

Sleeping Dogs is being developed by United Front Games in partnership with Square Enix London Studios. Prior to being picked up by Square Enix, True Crime: Hong Kong was cancelled by Activision. While Square picked up the rights to the game itself, they didn’t buy the rights to the True Crime brand, which is why the game has a different title now.

Square Enix will release Sleeping Dogs in the second half of 2012. You can watch a new live-action announcement trailer for the game above.

Oh wow I loved True Crime: Streets of LA, that one was awesome! Good times! ヽ(*≧ω≦)ノ

I thought True Crime: Hong Kong was dead! That’s nice to hear! (◕‿◕✿)

True Crime: NY was kinda better :3

      • aoihana

I played NY, too, but I don’t know, I couldn’t get into it, for some reason. It was still fun to play it from time to time, but I don’t think I did ever beat it! (◕‿◕✿)

HOLY CRAP. I think I recognize that karaoke place at the end over there! Anyway, that trailer feels like a Hong Kong action movie to me – and I think that’s exactly what it was going for. It’s crazy their going THIS far for an announcement trailer. Well made.

I wonder how they’re going emulate the claustrophobia of Hong Kong. Everything’s really condensed, but in a good way. It’s a tough thing to make happen in a game, where you need enough room for gameplay to happen. It’s going to be real interesting.

Yeah, really intense and gritty trailer.. I’ve been always scared by those Hong Kong triad brawls w/ knive and cleaver CQC, up close and personal *.*..   Not that I’m picky or anything, I don’t know why Capcom kept calling RE6 takes place in China instead of saying it specifically takes place in the city of HK, to put more emphasis on the claustrophobic factor.. This is like rated M Shenmue or something :)

    Joking aside, cool trailer :D

Fan-damn-tastic. Though the series has never been great, it’s still had a lot of potential and True Crime: Hong Kong sounded great. Then Activision decided to be jerks… But now Sqaure Enix have done something awesome.

Looks like it goes back on my radar and now time to save up

  • MrRobbyM

I hope this is a good representation of what the gameplay will be like. If so, I’m sold.

The graphics look like real life!

    • Quang Anh Chu

      It’s actually real…

  • caleb1993

If this game is anywhere close to what this trailer was, I know I’ll love it. I definitely found my game for the summer (if it does actually release then). Cannot wait at all.

Yep, the game environment feels like Hong Kong to me with all those brutal moments.. I expect Square-Enix London to butcher the game(is that a pun?) and make it too western… The voice acting has some Cantonese being spoken with right accent.. I also lol’ed at some of the cantonese dialogues…

For once, SE did something right…

  • ShadowWolf

    Fonzie be praised!

  • s07195

I suddenly don’t feel like going out at night. Ever again.
But really, the trailer is quite realistic-looking, and the Cantonese sounds authentic, so I’m hyped. It’ll be interesting to see which parts of HK will be playable…hopefully not where I live. =S

P.S. The line ‘Let him go’ in the trailer isn’t quite accurate (though the general meaning is clear), it should be ‘Let go of my boss’.

    damn definitely got me interested!!!!

can’t wait for the gameplay videos to start rolling ^^
