Resident Evil Creator Teases His New Game With Creepy Concept Art

Resident Evil creator, Shinji Mikami, runs a studio called Tango Gameworks, which is owned by ZeniMax Media. ZeniMax also own two very prominent game developers in the west—Bethesda Softworks (The Elder Scrolls) and id Software (Doom).

Last night, early reports indicated that Mikami and Tango are developing a new survival horror game, codenamed Zwei. Curiously, Bethesda are helping out with the development of this game, and today, Tango put up a teaser site for Zwei with a message from the studio and from Mikami himself. Here’s what it says:

“Our latest project’s codename is "Zwei" and it is a survival horror game.

“The above image is a collage of different environments we put together for this announcement and is intended to give a feel for the tone and the direction the production is taking. (However, neither the code name nor the image is intended to tell you exactly what is in the game.)

“As a master of the ‘survival horror’ genre, Shinji Mikami is committed to making a game that is the realization of pure survival horror, an experience which he defines as one that pushes the limits of fear and exhilaration. He and his team at Tango are committed to attaining this vision.”

  • That picture looks like he posing for some kind of music album.

I’m getting excited already. Here’s hoping he shows the new Silent Hill devs how it’s done; Downpour was a step in the right direction, but they’re still not quite getting it.

EDIT: Oh and yes, I know he’s responsible for Resident Evil, not Silent Hill, but RE pretty threw its horror out the window around the time a midget Napoleon was squeaking at me from a throneroom in the middle of Not-Spain, so it falls to Silent Hill to be the major horror player these days.

As a longtime fan of the Resident Evil series I can’t wait to see how this turns out. I’m going to get Resident Evil 6 for sure but I hope this new game has less of an emphasis on action and more on survival horror.

  • i trust you
Shinji Mikami i m still playing Resident evil 4 HD on my Ps3 !

    Great concept art
    hopes really high

  • Draculoid

Very intriguing, Can’t wait to see more. Very creepy concept art indeed.

  • I hope you get to play a helpless vulnerable character with NO combat skills at all and whatever terrifying creatures that’s in the game to be creatively scary. No jump scares but full terrifying experience that makes your pound through out and has you constantly breathing fast.

    Nothing camp or action-based but a HORROR…!

Thanks to God Hand and Vanquish, I became a fan of Shinji Mikami. I’m really looking forward to this game.

Also hoping that this won’t be the last game he would direct. I remember him mentioning that he would only act as a director in one game and would focus more in mentoring the younger staff and running the company after that.

  • Nitraion

Lol DAT pose and quote XD

  • I’m very interested to see where this will go. Cannot wait to actually start getting news on this one.

I would like to see a game where you constantly feel like your walking through one of those creepy message board stories, a touch of impending (but avoidable) doom, a dash of eldrich influence, and a pinch of life and death’s twilight. You know, a game that instils that same uneasy feeling you get when you glance out of your bedroom window at night and peer into the darkness and let your mind quickly mull over what could be lurking far off in the blackness… or lurking outside under the window, waiting for you to turn away so that it can continue peering at you. Judging by those areas (as long as they keep realistic lighting) this seems to be coming close to that.

Intriguing. Shinji Mikami has yet to release a game I didn’t enjoy, and even if I am not a big fan of horror… I am still pretty interested in what might come from a fusion between him and Bethesda.

Now all I’m wondering is WHO from Bethesda he’s working with. You say Bethesda and your thoughts immediately go to Elder Scrolls, but there’s no guarantee he’s working with high profile people from the company…

    • thebanditking

Honestly I hope its no one from the Elder team because simply from a technical stand point Bethesda is one of the worst companies this gen (imo of course). They truly define the “Ship it now, patch it later” mentality that is ruining the industry. Weather you like their games or not there is little arguing this with Fallout and Skyrim being perfect examples.

  • Fanboys_Everywhere

Can’t wait for this. It looks like how it sounds & doesn’t have tanks & helicopters in every screen shot.
    This , SkullGirls & a new platforming hero(ine).
Finally people can turn away from the obsolete & over-saturated Capcom now that there are clearly better experiences out there for their general consumer base.

  • And suddenly, we get another Survival Horror which relies on pure shooting.

  • thebanditking

I’m going to limit my excitement until I see more. That said I will undoubtedly be disappointed by this on some level because its not the proper Resident Evil sequel I have been dying for after REmake and Zero…

  • Solomon_Kano

I’m interested to see where he takes this. The concept art certainly looks good, but that doesn’t mean much in the end.

  • i am praying for the return of survival horror like we knew it. i miss it sooooooooo much. i just wana real survival and real horror together im getting tired of playing the siren series over and over :)

  • Wait what? I thought Mikami was working with Platinum Games.
