Phantasy Star Online 2 Producer Teases Open Beta Features

By Ishaan . May 3, 2012 . 1:31pm

Phantasy Star Online 2 producer, Satoshi Sakai, recently held another fan briefing presentation, where he outlined a few details regarding the game’s upcoming open beta test. While Sakai wouldn’t say when the open beta would begin, he did tease some of the newly-added features players would find.

For starters, the open beta will allow you to level up to level 30. For level 20+ characters, there will be a hard mode of some sort. Additionally, Planet Liliipa will see a new desert-themed area (above) for the open beta. This new field will be entirely covered in sand and contain the remains of old structures that were used to collect resources from the planet at one time. Story quests will be added to the open beta, too.

Sakai also teased a few additional features for the full version of the game. The official release will come with 8 weapon types, but more will be added as time goes on. Responding to a fan asking for the inclusion of Double Sabers, Sakai confirmed that those would be added. A Knuckle weapon category was confirmed as well.

We’ll keep our eyes and ears open for when Sega announce open beta dates for Phantasy Star Online 2. The game’s official release is still expected early this summer.

  • Xbox360 beta version please. Oh and an xbox360 release.

    Okay just an idea.

    • Luna Kazemaru

       Sega: lol nope.avi

    •  Yeah, because that worked out *so well* for PSU

    •  let’s face it, that would bomb too hard to justify even the thought. . .

    • Nope, I don’t think so. Sega needs to make money.

  • DanteJones

The closed beta was pretty fun, so I’m definitely looking forward to the open one!

    • Luna Kazemaru

you mean close beta was laggy and had a load of D/C’s

      • DanteJones

Don’t think I ever got disconnected randomly, though there was lag in the lobbies if you joined rooms that were pretty close to being full.

        • Luna Kazemaru

I was on ship two so yeah but I did get a few d/c’s I think like 2 or 3 times and my internet was fine so yeah I think it was just random because they did extend the beta because of the lag and d/c’s.

          • DanteJones

Yeah, I remember one day in particular (April 26th or 27th I think?) they had to take the servers down for maintenance the entire day for whatever reason. Also: Ship 2 room 20 was where all the cool kids hung out. :D

          • I envy you both. I was on Ship 4 because of /vg/. Worst mistake ever man. I found one good fellow in that ship and 100 Members in a team which was run by 4-7 Players that didnt even commit anything sensible for the team.

  • Luna Kazemaru

Lol You must be new here if you honestly thought I was hating on the game and I’d watch what you type here kid.

    So yeah…

  • Anyone got any idea how strong your PC has to be to run this?

    • Theres a benchmark tool. Do a search for it on this website and you should find it easy.

      • ddh819

will you need a graphics card? i only have a laptop with intel integrated graphics.

        •  probably cause most aren’t built for truly intense graphics

  • “A Knuckle weapon category was confirmed as well”

  • AokiShizuku

    Double sabers?!

I hope they release a version for the 3ds. About how many years after PSU was released did Phantasy Star Portable come out?
