Unchained Blades Let Loose This Spring

By Spencer . May 4, 2012 . 11:00am

001If you’re itching for a first person dungeon crawler and dig anime artwork check out Unchained Blades. Xseed picked up the title from Furyu and localized the scenario designed by Grandia creator Takashi Hino. Lunar leader Toshio Akashi is the game’s director and Shining series artist pako created Fang, the haughty protagonist in Unchained Blades.

Each lead character was drawn by a different artist. Toshiyuki Kubooka (Lunar series), Kumichi Yoshizuki (Someday’s Dreamers), Shinichiro Otsuka (Summon Night), Sunaho Tobe (Hexyz Force), and Kazushi Hagiwara (Bastard!!) contributed character designs.

Unchained Blades will have English voiceovers. Xseed will release Unchianed Blades as a digital download this spring for Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Portable via the Nintendo eShop and PlayStation Network, respectively.

    Um, isn’t Spring almost over?

    • SirRichard

I guess it’ll be in the middle of May, maybe? Bit weird to be using “Spring 2012” on the 4th of May, regardless.

      • Ryos

Spring can technically be as late as June 20.  Obviously I’m hoping a bit closer to tomorrow. :P

        • Auragar

          lol Wow. xD

    • That’s what I was thinking.

  • COME ON ! I rather import the game than pay full price for s digital only copy!!

    • Why? So you can play it in a language you don’t understand, simply so you can have the box? Sure, go for it.

      • Luna Kazemaru

         Let his tears flow

    • Hraesvelgr

      Go import it, then.

  • dragoon_slayer12

Can’t wait for this. Definitely getting the 3ds version just for the 3D and the bottom screen as the map (less on screen clutter)

  • The game looks really interesting so I’ll make sure to fetch it off PSN when it comes out. I haven’t been keeping up with news of this game though, has a price for it been announced yet~?

  • usagi_san

Yes, yes and one more for good measure… YES!!! Can’t wait to pick this up for the 3DS. I’ve been meaning to get into a dungeon crawler recently.

  • malek86

Uhm… not sure if I should just plunge for the PSN version, or wait for the european eShop version. The PSN one gets me immediate access, dithering and a bigger screen. The eShop one gets me waiting an indefinite amount of time, no dithering, and maybe some 3D.

I guess I might wait if Xseed says they have some plans to publish the game in the european store in the near future, otherwise I might just get the PSP one.

  • Fang looks like an older Toma http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100731214245/shining/images/thumb/d/d6/SFexaToma_hero.jpg/360px-SFexaToma_hero.jpg

Which, upon reading the article, makes perfect sense.

  • Julien_N

I was also wondering whether the game would be released for the EU eShop…Had XSEED already published anything here in digital format? Or maybe RSG could pick the game for a retail release, but I am dreaming…

    • malek86

We do have some Xseed games on PSN here, courtesy of Ghostlight.

      • Ladius

Trails in the Sky was brought over by Ghostlight, and other XSeed games have been published by RSG in Europe, but XSeed has also published some games on the EU PSN directly, like the Ys games or Corpse Party.

I think they went on record to say that their current process for European release is 1) Try to find a local partner 2) If there isn’t timeno one is interestedother reasons just publish it yourself. NISA is doing the same, considering all their recent PSP games have followed the same pattern. It would be wonderful if Aksys and Atlus USA started doing the same.

        • malek86

As interesting an idea it is, I wonder why they can’t just publish it themselves all the time. Most of those games end up not being translated in any language other than english anyway, so it doesn’t seem like they require a lot of work.

I understand they need partners for physical releases, but for digital releases they could try and just do the job themselves. Would probably save time.

As for Atlus USA, I think they are already doing it? Persona PSP was like that, I seem to remember.

          • Ladius

Yeah, Atlus did it for Persona 1, but then stopped bringing games directly to the EU PSN, and that store is still missing out on a ton of their PSP games (their DS lineup is even less represented in Europe, for that matter).

I can understand them not bothering to bring a Crimson Gem Saga-level title because they think it’s too niche, but I found it rather incredible that they waited for Ghostlight to bring Persona 3 Portable on the EU PSN, considering how big that game is.

          • malek86

I think it would be pretty bad for their business deals if they published the game on PSN and then handed another company only the physical release rights.

Still not sure why they didn’t at least publish those games that never got a physical release here (such as the Sting games).

    • SirRichard

On the eShop? No, but then not many people have bothered with the eShop outside Nintendo themselves.

On the PSN, XSEED have been surprisingly active on the European side of things, even getting Corpse Party to us within a few weeks of the US release and for a fairly reasonable price of £12 to boot. They also got all the Ys games they’ve handled to us as well, which was very nice of them, and were better about the pricing than others I could name (‘sup, NISA).

      • Julien_N

I am more interested in the 3DS version because I don’t have a PSP (as of now) and because the map is on the bottom screen. But yes, the eShop is not as packed with games as the PSN.

  • Prinnydoom

Looks pretty cool not a fan of first person anything but ill give it a go

  • Anime10121

    Dont know if want :-/

Love some of the art but the game mechanics look almost as dated as Dragon Quest 1.  Maybe its just that I dont like Dungeon Crawlers that much, and also dislike the fact that its First Person.

Depending on price though I may still jump in, if only to support XSEED so that they can finish the Trails in the Sky series.

  • TenRX

I played when it came a year ago, not so attractive for an dungeon crawler rpg.

  • SetzerGabbiani

This looks like it will tide me over until EO IV is announced for localization.

  • ok, might give it a try because it looks interesting.

  • is it just me or this looks like SMT+Tales..

    • Just looks like an animu dungeon crawler with FFX’s Sphere Grid to me.

  • Auragar

Looks interesting and I will be getting it but the question is which system 3DS or Vita since I am almost certain it will be compatible with Vita. If not then… there is my answer 3DS. xD

    • I thought all PSP digital downloads are compatible with the Vita?

      • Auragar

I don’t think ALL of them are. Unless they have changed that since launch?

        • Quinton Rivera

You are correct. Only 9 out of the 17 digital PSP games I have will work at the moment. The most perplexing part is that NONE the “Welcome Back” games from last year are currently playable on a Vita.

          • SirTeffy

LittleBigPlanet PSP is compatible. I have it on my Vita right now!

          • Quinton Rivera

That’s odd. It’s not on the list. I guess they may have not updated it. But then again, there are some compatibile games that aren’t on the list like Maverick Hunter X and Valkyria Chronicles 2.

Here is said list for those interested: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/02/09/how-to-download-psp-titles-to-ps-vita/

          • Auragar

Hmm… makes me wonder if it will work. lol If not I have my 3DS. SO no big deal really.

    • Darrel Daley

I would pick 3DS. It just seems like it would offer more like 3D and bottom screen(hopefully as a map).

  • Kitestwinblades

First person view, a map of surrounding enemies, battle system that reminds me of the dragon quest/warrior, and a sphere grid. Definitely picking this one up!
The fox girl interests me a bit too :3

  • whoa! Look at da list o’ humiez makin’ dis game!

Grandia creata, Lunar lead, Shining artist! I fink me an’ da boyz might just get dis.

  • TheBlackKnight3

I skipped on Sumioni but I’ll definitely be picking this up. Spring release sounds weird though, isn’t that a little early? It’s already May.

  • scratchbach

Don’t usually like dungeon crawlers, but this does look pretty great, and I’m really interested in all of the different character designs. Plus, there’s a serious lack of RPGs on my 3DS, and I always feel a little guilty if I don’t support the miracle workers over at XSEED, so this is gonna be a day one buy for me.

  • lol near immortal powers.

  • Nyandroid

YES! YES! YES! I can’t WAIT for this!! :D
What are the differences going to be between PSP and 3DS? Anything? Anyone know?

    • Zero_Destiny

I know that on the PSP version you can toggle the map on the main screen to be big or small while on the 3DS version the top screen is the action and the bottom screen is the map. I always thought that was nice to have. I liked the map being on a separate screen a lot in Strange Journey. Other then that I think the aspect ratios might be a little bit different given the screen sizes, but don’t quote me on that.

Siliconera had an article on it a while ago, I still remember it. lol

      • Nyandroid

Alright! Thanks for this! I don’t much like having a map right in front of me, myself. Just a little bit annoying! Think Ill be going with the 3DS on this one!

        • Zero_Destiny

          Oh my God Hiro!!! :D

Lunar 2 is one of my all time favorite games.  <3 I approve of this new avatar.

I'm picking up the 3DS version myself for two reasons. The first is because the Map on the bottom screen, like I said I like it better when the map is on a separate screen instead of being in the way. The second is because I have high hopes for the full retail game downloads on the 3DS. So yeah I wanna test it out and see just how well Nintendo can pull it off.

          • Nyandroid

I love BOTH of the Lunar games! X3 Though the second is by far my favorite! XD

I just found this on photobucket! :D
Right now I’m digging through all the fanart on deviantart!
So disappointed with zerochan. Barely even knows Lunar exists! >_<

  • SMT style dungeon crawler?

    I would say sold if not because I don’t hv a 3DS/PSP…..

  • neetyneety

Oh yes, even more dungeon crawling goodness. Now I hope Atlus makes some sort of sequel/updated port of Strange Journey and then announce localization for Etrian Odyssey IV and my life will be complete. Oh yeah, Soul Hackers too!

  • jc0111

This spring… we’re already in May, shouldn’t they announce the date at that point ?

  • CrimsonalCore

This Spring? You mean around next week or after! Otherwise Summer is approaching fast. :S

Good thing I saved up my money for some good game, like this one. >w>

  • That looks pretty freaking sweet, especially for a eshop download!

  • Alexandra Cordes

E….english voice-overs? NOOOOOOOOooooooo! Dual-audio? Please…? I’ll never understand why they give games english voice overs when it already costs a lot to localize the games in the first place. Plus… original voices are usually best. T_T

    • Luna Kazemaru

Because YOU KNOW there are some people that like to hear the game in their own language. And this thread is 3 weeks old >.>

      • Alexandra Cordes

Who cares how old it is?
