Bethesda Celebrate 20 Years Of Wolfenstein 3D With Free Browser Version

By Ishaan . May 9, 2012 . 8:30am

To celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary, Bethesda have released a free-to-play browser version of Wolfenstein 3D, widely considered to be the game that first popularized the first-person shooter genre. You can access the game here. The browser version contains all three of the original episodes.

Additionally, id Software co-founder, John Carmack, has released a developer diary of sorts, where he discusses the development of the game while playing through a portion of this. You can watch the developer video above.

While I somehow managed to miss Doom in spite of the fact that I’ve been a PC gamer my entire life, I (fortunately) did not miss Wolfenstein 3D. While it is quite rough around the edges by today’s standards, it’s still a classic that ended up introducing many people (including myself) to the FPS genre.

Having said that, it also makes me kind of sad watching this, since it reminds me of a time when there was a lot more variety in the genre. Back in the day, there were plenty of FPS games that emphasised exploration and reflex-based gameplay. While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with linear and/or semi-realistic shooters, it’s still disappointing that a genre that has shown so much variety in the past is now limited to those types of games.

Haha yeah I remember when we had to install the game on our 3.5 disk drive, and having to “call” Id to order the other episodes which were then mailed to your house.  haha good times

For those wanting a non-online version, today it’s also available on Steam for 75% off, as well as the other games in the series (except the most recent one).

  • Remind me of great old time.

The iOS version (maybe ipad only) is also free right now, I just snagged it a few minutes ago. ^__^
