Next Tales Of Game Asks Would You Destroy The World For A Girl?

By Spencer . May 15, 2012 . 10:40pm

talesxTales series producer Hideo Baba spoke to Famitsu about the next Tales of title ahead of the game’s reveal. The next Tales game will be a "mothership" or core game in the series.

While other Tales games have a fantasy feel with swords and magic, this Tales game will have a modern feel to it. Baba assures fans the game will play like other Tales titles and considers this a challenge to take the Tales series to the "next stage."

The game’s tagline is – "Are you prepared to destroy the world for the sake of a girl?" Baba elaborated saying this phrase is key to the story and gameplay. Like other Tales titles the next Tales game is set in a new world.

Baba also said other Tales titles are in development at Namco Bandai, but didn’t offer any other details. The next Tales of game will be revealed on June 2.

  • Code

    NOO Namcooo what have you done, your giving Tales fans the chance to destroy us alll >AA<;

    • Yikes.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Say there wouldn’t be much of a game if our answer was ‘no’.

  • takopako

    that sounds super epic!!!

  • The big questions being: How hot is she for this to be worth it?

  • Alexander Aubert

  • Shadowman

I don’t know. Is she pretty?

  • M’iau M’iaut

Only if she’s a cute loli.

  • Go2hell66

    if she’s really hot…

btw why does this remind me of sands of destruction

  • So excited for this one! June 2nd can’t come any faster! I still say it’s Tales of Xillia 2 though :P

  • I have played to save the world because my sword master is a psycho, saved the world because a God like angel kid thing was lonely then saved it again…sorta because of weird demon stuff etc etc…Yeah I think I’ll step it up myself and destroy it this time dood.

  • kashiwaba

Please Bamco PS3 and Yes f**k the world if she s hot :P.

  • Haha! So those modern-like concept pictures weren’t a bluff. Even the next theme feels modern. Glad to see Baba trying something different, now I’m very curious as to what’s going to be revealed…minus the “for a girl part,” cuz every story like this always has a young girl as the subject matter from what I’ve seen.

  • Nitraion

    Karma time….
is this Tales with chance to be villain?

    •  “To be an anti-hero,” you mean? Yuri already took that title.

      Or anti-villain, whichever comes first.

      • LustEnvy

Sure, but the overall theme of Vesperia wasn’t dark enough for the EPICOSITY that is Yuri.

        •  Yuri would probably make an epic Dark Souls character if Vesperia was overall dark. lol

      • Nitraion

Hmm maybe like kira deathnote minus he is straight not gay ._.

  • Would I destroy the world for a girl? I don’t think there’s a girl in the entire universe worth saving if it costs the existence of the entire planet. I’m sorry but there’s no kitty-cat that’s worth that much trouble lol.

I know that guys normally think with the head downstairs, but my partner and I are pretty much on the same page right now xD.

    • Ben Sylvia

      Well, depends on the world.

      Is it a sucky world?
Am I constantly being screwed over by “The Man”?
      Is it a veritable paradise?
      Somewhere in between?

      •  That depends on the individual’s view since for another person, the world is acceptable and decent. Besides that, what the hell will be left after if you save the girl but destroy the world? Nothing but anarchy and a De-evolution of society. Sure, you saved a life. A life. But one person’s life doesn’t equally balance out the weight of the billions of lives of other people. o.o

  • M’iau M’iaut

Hoping this might end up as some sort of homage to the greatness that was Tales of Symphonia. The theme certainly brings back memories.

    • Worm88

-yes….i feel like they did this already with symphonia…

  • No. Never. Where would you enjoy her companionship if the world was literally destroyed? And what if she didn’t want you after all that effort? Come on Japan. This is pretty easy question to answer.

    •  And yet, they always use a “clever” tactic or two to get around this question or resolve it like it was a no brainer.

  • Guys… it’s a Tales game.  It’s gonna end with one of those “we’ll find a way to save you AND the world!!!”, and then they find a way, and then the girl and the world are saved.

    •  That’s….A predictable yet dull kind of ending. o.o Well, that’s Tales for ya sometimes.

    • Then doesn’t that make this “tagline” pointless, since we all know what’s gonna happen?

Worst yet, that we almost know the entire plot of a game that hasn’t even been revealed?

      • You must have graduated from Killjoke University.

        • Sarcasm is not so easily implied on the internet anyways, so go figure. *shrugs*

    • Im pretty certain one of the Tales game had a sort of bittersweet ending.

      • puchinri

Destiny did. And Eternia, from the sound of it (to an extent, anyway).
But I don’t know how many of the more recent ones have had a bittersweet ending.

        • I can’t really remember what the endings of Destiny or Eternia entailed but Xillia’s ending is more what i was thinking.

          • puchinri

Well, there was always at least that one character you couldn’t save, and some people’s situations were a bit messed up. But from what I remember and know, it wasn’t a terribly dark ending overall.

I haven’t completely watched Xillia’s ending, I’ll have to get around to that.

    • puchinri

Sadly, that’s probably true. It’s not the saving both part that’d be a shame either, but how it might be shown.

  • Fayharn

This “girl” must have something to do with sacrificing her to save the world or any other typical method we see in RPG…

Anyway, just hope the storyline will be something extraordinary.

  • LustEnvy

Needs to have an FFVI moment, where the world IS destroyed, and you have to make amends for your decision to let it happen. A darker Tales… I’m ALL for it.

  • PoweredByHentai

Yes I would and gladly, too.

    • M’iau M’iaut

But what if there’s no guarantee the new world will have hentai in it?

      • PoweredByHentai

As the destroyer of the old world, I believe that I have at least some right in shaping the new world as I see fit.  :P

        • icecoffemix

Then how about “would you destroy all hentai in the world and all its current and future author/artist for the sake of a girl?”

          • PoweredByHentai

Sure, again, I just destroy this world and then shape the next world as I see fit.  Priorities, man, I got it.  :D

          • icecoffemix

No man, I mean without the power to shape it, you’re not the decision maker during the process.

          • PoweredByHentai

I am the one destroying the world for one girl.  I’m pretty sure that I can get my way with things.

          • icecoffemix

lol if only it were that convenient, they wouldn’t say it destroy then.

But I hope we’d get to be a villain or an anti-hero, then again, this is Tales after all, I don’t think they will stray far from the formula unless they really mean it with the “next stage”.

          • raymk

By power I think he means that them being the only 2 people alive he can have kids and shape the world how he wants it through them.

  • Setsuna ♥

So around June 2th we’ll find out if its worth it or not, I like darker stories so hopefully this falls under that category.

  • Only if she’s Pascal.

    •  If it’s Judith, I wouldn’t have it any other way. But then again, she’d hate for doing this.

    • CirnoLakes

Chest is a little big for my tastes. But I like her personality.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

    Hell yes

  • Hoshi星

“Are you prepared to destroy the world for the sake of a girl?”

I don’t really want to. I pretty much want to live a normal life and play some video games.

That aside, I’m hyped to find out on which console it’ll be on.

  • Destroy the world for a girl?! It’s not worth it! There’s gotta be another way.

Looking forward to the title, the story, the characters, and the Mystic Artes!

  • Ben Sylvia

    How attractive is she?
What is my relationship to her?
What kind of personality does she have?
Do I get to wield some awesome weapons, make stuff explode in fire, and fight dragons and stuff in the process?
edit: and do I get a funny midget side kick who makes snide remarks at the expense of others?

Sounds interesting… looking forward to it~~

  • It would be nice if it were a darker story. Not saying Tales is the only series that does it, but I’m tired of saving the world with sugar and rainbows.

  • …Kill the girl and save the world?

Or save the girl and the world goes to heck?

    No other choice?

Then MajinKen reason in the face and save both~!

    • To be quite honest, the way you said it made it sound like Symphonia

      • Well, more like on the TTGL side. Hehe.

  • Depends, is it going to come stateside or will this drop off my radar like every other tales games because the west is horrifically neglected. I think anyone getting excited over this before it’s even confirmed for a western release is stupid, as I’m not holding my breath.

    • Setsuna ♥

      Importers say otherwise

  • Loving it already, that theme is much more appealing than Xillia’s was ~

    • Scoops Skywalker

you do realize the next title IS XILLIA right?

      • Not for me, I import my games more often that not. I could care less about a localization of that incomplete excuse for a Tales game.

If this receives a localization I’ll buy it– even if I own a Japanese copy; which is highly likely. Tales of Xillia however? Meh, played it, didn’t like it… it’s soooo not worth my time anymore.

        • andre.fobbe

Hmm… I was actually looking forward to playing Xillia. Right now, I’ve only played Tales of Vesperia and Tales of Graces f, and I must say I very much prefer Tales of Vesperia. How would you compare Xillia to the two aforementioned, and what exactly is it that bugs you so much regarding Xillia (without spoilers, please)?

          • Xillia is made by the team which made Vesperia. I’m playing through it right now, and while I haven’t seen the full scope of the story, game mechanics and interfaces are noticeably updated from Vesperia. If you liked V, I don’t see why you wouldn’t like X.

As for the statements regarding the game’s “incomplete” status, I’m going to reserve judgement until I’ve completed it. Some say the game is a bit short, but there are apparently two storylines to play through, so that’s probably why. But make no mistake: It’s still a really good game as far as the battle system and user convenience are concerned.

          • Actually, Xillia was a collaborative effort between both teams. Since right before it’s development began both teams were dissolved into one.

Vesperia’s team handled the battle system, and ToS2’s director handled the story. Everything else was an all hands on deck type thing, since they were now one solid team– which makes me wonder why– with some many people having worked on it, does this game feel so incomplete?

          • It lacks elements that most Tales games have. My gripes right now would be:
limited in-game costumes, no cameo fights, limited artes, side quests don’t feel rewarding, and the story feels rushed.

The overworld areas; for the most part, look like fast redesigns of each other. I mean, overall, the game feels rushed incomplete. (At least the towns are well designed)

Most won’t agree, but when playing through, I couldn’t help but feel that there was a lot missing from the game. A lot of things that have become staples for the series– they were just flat out gone, left out.

I own Vesperia.. heck, it was my first tales game. I have also played the original Graces and Graces F. I love those games a lot. But Xillia is lacking a lot… I definitely enjoy playing ToV on my PS3 moreso than Xillia. That’s for darn sure.

What I played, I thoroughly enjoyed– when I put my complaints aside. And it’s a good game in it’s own right.. but with that feeling of emptiness it had while playing, I just don’t think it’s good enough when compared to other Tales games.

Don’t get me wrong, I could give you a page-full of things that I LOVED about Xillia. The shop leveling system, the varying monsters, non-overworld dungeons, the battle music, editable accessories, and the graphics style just to name a few.

But that list is nothing in compared to how incomplete the game feels to me. So unless we miraculously are given more in a possible localization, I won’t be giving Namdai my money. =/

For me… they struck out with Xillia, they delivered something that holds up to only a few of the series strong points, and delivered an incomplete experience.

That’s why I have decided to move on past Xillia, and look forward to this next game. I’m hoping they can make right everything they did wrong with Xillia– and then some.

  • Emiya Kiritsugu

    • Setsuna ♥

I find this comment especially funny given Kiritsugu’s character and mindset (for those who watch/played Fate Zero).

      • icecoffemix

Huh? How do you “play” Fate/Zero?

        • Christian J. Prokop

          with your hands, carefully

          • neocatzon

flip through the pages. Its fun

        • MrKappa

He probably thought it was a game like FS/N rather than a novel.

          • andre.fobbe

Well, it should have been a game instead of FS/N. It’s far more interesting than Shirou’s masochism and awkward love life.

          • amagidyne

Huh? How do you “play” FS/N?

          • MrKappa

Well I never said you could “play” it if you want to be technical, but regardless of that fact it is still classified as a game.
Though I am sure you only jest.

    • LOL We’ve found the right person to say that wholeheartedly.

    • boundries_san

Lol to think that come from Emiya Kiritsugu char here.

Well, i will answer the opposite then. YES!!!(Shot me!!!)

    • KyoyaHibari

      Episode 19, nuff said ;D

  • I’ve wanted to destroy the world all along~ So I guess you can throw in the girl. Two birds with a stone.

… is what I hope one of the Tales’ villain/anti-heroes will say. Imagine what kind of world would be worth destroying, right?

  • Zenkito

Sounds interesting! Destroying the “World” could mean anything, like: destroying a neighbouring planet/world, not necessarily the one you inhabit. Either way I’ll be looking forward to it!

  • Bros before… hm.  Not sure if I’m allowed to finish that thought here.   Anyway my answer is “no.”  Maybe they’ll let you choose in this game?  I’d like to see that.

  • World includes many many chicks
Why should I destroy that for the sake of 1 chick ?

    • boundries_san

Hmm if the one chick u have is the best of all chick in the world, u will still choose the world here?

    • Jirin

Are we talking about some cynical sexual conquest like half the responses are or are we talking about protecting individual freedoms on principle like they do on Star Trek?

      • raymk

Principles are overrated you didn’t know, that’s why he didn’t reply back.

        • Jirin

I disagree, but that’s not a debate for this context.

Would you kill people for a sexual conquest, and would you take major risks to protect individual freedoms are two very distinct questions with very different answers.

There are plenty of reasons he may not have replied back.  Maybe he has nothing to add, maybe he hasn’t read it yet.  Maybe you’re right.  Any of those reasons to not reply back are more valid than replying back just to troll someone.

  • yesyes, i alrdy knew that women were evil.

  • Hm is 1 girl worth saving over billions of lives? Well if the world hates me already and I hate it then yeah Id go with the girl we would probably live in focelos or something.

  • The age-old dilemma every male RPG protagonist has to make. My answer will be decided on whether the woman in question has healing artes or not. Always in need of a competent healer in a party when I’m venturing off to save the world.

    • Christian J. Prokop

dedicated healers is a trend that needs to phase out, but that’s just me being sick of needing to haul the cleric around.

      • But then it wouldn’t be a JRPG! And we wouldn’t be presented by a heart-wrenching decision to destroy the world over a girl! We need the archetypes!

        • Christian J. Prokop

My issues with the term “JRPG” notwithstanding, I think its high time alot of the archetypes in RPGs period need to be shrugged off or at least reexamined. Personally, I’ve had more than enough of tradition for tradition’s sake.

          • You’d probably have a better chance of archetypes being re-examined rather than simply being discarded. I think most people would observe that characterisations of RPGs are getting a little stagnant, even lacklustre, but you’ll mostly find no matter what changes are made, someone is bound to be made unhappy.

My failed attempts at sarcasm aside, admittedly I’m sick to death of carrying the healers around; even more so if they act as the morality pet for the hero.

  • MrKappa

My goodness I hope this does not mean the main character will be like Jude.
I”ll instantly knock a few points off this game if the main character is like a puppy swooning all over a girl with no regard to anything else. And if he ends up like one of those hot blooded generic shounen heroes who really will say something along the lines of wanting to destroy the world for one single girl then I will throw my hands up in defeat.

    • leadintea

I’m in full agreement with you, but this is a Tales Of game so my expectations are very low.

    •  I see a small tantrum in your near future, sir.

  • puchinri

I can’t decide whether or not I get to destroy the world for the sake of a guy?
(Then again, my boyfriend is a super villain, and I would sit back and let him wreak havoc.)

Can I be a girl and make this decision? Or do I have to be a guy? . . .Again.

This concept might go really well. Or~. It could go in a terribly predictable manner and be a bit of a disappointment. Well, even if the story and premise aren’t great, I hope the setting and characters are a lot of fun. ♥

    • It’s unfortunate, but I can’t recall a Tales game that allows you to change the main character’s gender.  This one might be different, though I’m guessing it’ll still be a girl you’re trying to take care of.  I’m not sure how many people would really object to a homosexual relationship being featured, but I suppose it would still work just fine.

It could work, though, without going that route.  All we have is a screenshot of the characters and the tagline yet it is assumed to be a romantic relationship.  It’s a strong bond, obviously, but not the only one.  It could be a relative, or perhaps a girl that has a close relationship to a friend or lover of the main character.  The main character could be a knight or a bodyguard that takes their mission WAY too seriously.  Maybe somebody with a pathological desire to keep their promises.

My expectations are admittedly low–the cynic in me is expecting to see a teenager shouting “I WILL PROTECT YOU” for 40 odd hours, but Bamco could really surprise us here.

(Geez, that was a bit long for me.)

      • puchinri

Yeah, it is a shame. They usually have fun female characters that are almost important as the male lead too, so I’m sure the option of a gender change or finally have a female lead would be handled well by them. It would actually be refreshing if you could be a female lead and still be that strongly tied to the girl.

Oh, there’s a screenshot? I need to go do some hunting. >u<
I'm actually hoping that it isn't a romantic relationship. It would be nice for the main pairing in the game to not be romantic for once.

Yeah, honestly, I'm not sure I'm expecting much. And heck, the lower our expectations are, the better chance of not being disappointed maybe? Unless it really does go as bad as we think.

[Heh, I much appreciated that you didn't (seem to) mind typing all that.]

  • CirnoLakes

I don’t know if making Tales modern is “taking it to the next stage” as much as it is just taking it away from its roots. Look at Final Fantasy, the more modern and sci-fi they got, the worse the series got. And how Hideo Baba said they were going to focus on the series’ strengths. This doesn’t seem like that. This seems like taking the series away from what people have loved about it.

If they wanted to “take the series to the next stage”, there are all sorts of better ways. For instance, Graces traded the world map for a small, but detailed in between trails and things. But one could argue that the world map actually had more due to the locations in the world map that weren’t towns. Taking things to the next level, could be to bring back the world map, but to have a lot more locations, or even do the over the top like Western RPG makers are doing and make the world one gigantic detailed world map/lack of world map. At the very least, taking it to the “next stage” doesn’t mean futurizing it, it would more mean making improvements on some levels to the land over past titles.

There’s nothing about futurization that would improve Tales. And this seems to be the exact same mistake that Final Fantasy made. Final Fantasy went to the future in terms of settings, but went backwards in terms of gameplay and what made Final Fantasy good. There are a plethora of things that would help take Tales to the “next level” and improve upon previous installments. None of them have anything to do with futurizing Tales.

    • ChocolateBar999

       Spoken like a true fantard

    • thebanditking

Tales……….SPACE! lol I’m sure this new game will turn out just fine, the early art looks slightly steam punk/industrial.

      • Jirin

        Tales in space?

I liked it better the first time…when it was called Star Ocean.

    • SerendipityX

FF went backwards in regards to gameplay? Have to disagree there. Gameplay was pretty much the same all the way up to XII. And FFXIII took already simple gameplay and made it even simpler. Truth is Square actually went forward by trying a very different approach with gameplay, story problems aside.

  • Christian J. Prokop

“Are you prepared to destroy the world for the sake of a girl?”

Well, its not the worst thing i’ve done in an RPG…

  • idofgrahf

I think a better theme would have been something along the lines of my life for yours. Self sacrifice is more believable than destroying the entire world for some girl. Funny, given the worlds isn’t his to destroy in the first place. I hope they pull it off well, given than any reasonable man would let the chick die so everyone else may live.

  • hopefully the maincharacter is more like Yuri with a hinge on craziness for a girl

  • amagidyne

But if the world is destroyed, there is no way the girl will survive after you’ve saved her, rendering the whole exercise meaningless. And don’t give me that “what if it’s a different world?” line, because in that case the tagline is being dishonest. It says “the world”, not “a world”. I guess there’s a possibility that destroying it will create a new world, but that raises so many more questions. Will the new world have other people in it? Will I be creating them?

Or maybe I’m reading too much into it. At least they didn’t call it a “maybe saving a girl and dooming the world details forthcoming on what that’s supposed to mean RPG”.

    • CirnoLakes

I’m thinking that neither is going to end instantly at the decision. And that’s it is more like the plotline in Symphonia(and to a lesser degree, Vesperia). That you can choose between a girl you like dying now or soon, or the planet dying much sooner in the long run.

In most cases the party has of course opted for a third option and have struggled to save both until the very end and they’re run out of options. Perhaps they’re planning, in this case, to make things not so hopeful.

      • amagidyne

Oh yeah, that makes a lot more sense. I doubt Tales is going to go “dark”, though.

        • keithmaxx

Who knows, it might be the “next stage” that Baba-san is talking about. Also, it would be prime time to mature the theme up a bit, seeing as how most of the more recent ones appealed to more romanticist themes (though Xillia had its own dark parts, but they were mostly over-emotional, IMO).

          I’m ready for you, Bubba!

    •  Ehh, in the end they will end up saving the world instead, believe me.

  • ………yes.

    • C.C.

  • KuroiKen

    …somehow I feel I won’t be playing it.
Not the kind of storyline Team Destiny would make a game about. Though, IF I’m wrong and they will – I’ll be glad to take ’em up on that.

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

The Teams were disbanded after Tales of Graces F was completely so this game, like Xillia, will have people from both teams developing.

      • KuroiKen

They never really were after their respective games(Destiny/Symphonia) releases. I mean that the base team of developers are those who made Graces, Destiny, Rebirth, Destiny 2 etc., so the gameplay would be something decent, not that outdated classic that I see in Vesperia, Xillia, and also Abyss and Symphonia. The characters would be decent as well.

        • raymk

The characters being decent in an team destiny game outside of tales of destiny? lol.  Graces has some of the worst characters ever and the artstyle of that game is well not that good.  While Vesperia and symphonia games may have an outdated gameplay style their style is kind of outdated as well.  The c.c stuff has been used for awhile as well.
You’re right though team destiny does do gameplay better but that’s it and tales is tales the combat is still what seems to draw people to every game.  You also called xillia combat crap but team destiny helped with that combat system.

  • Wafflenaut

If this proposed “girl” is alright with me sacrificing a world for her, then she’s not a girl worth sacrificing a world for.

  • boundries_san

“Are you prepared to destroy the world for the sake of a girl?”

Soo….. This is the exact opposite of Emiya Kiritsugu i see. The one who will kill even his beloved to save the masses.

This sounds interesting.^^ Can’t wait for more info here.

  • AceWildCard

Call me a tales of’ whore but hearing another tales of game is in the work makes me …>insert clever remark< Such great news, tales games never leave me disappointed they always remind me why I should have never bought Star ocean the last hope… Now then if only I can take final fantasy 13-2 and star ocean 4 perform a transmutation and some how pray that I can dualize/synthesize a copy of Xillia translated, I'm sure a lot of folks here would be happy ;D

One can infer that with the gravity of the matter at hand, the strongest possible relation between you and the girl would be a love interest. If it were family they wouldn’t say it so ambiguously like this.

Also, this is Tales we’re talking about.

      • That’s fine. I was just wondering if the original wording had been more explicit. You’re probably right but I think we’re allowed to consider other possibilities. ;)

    • RaikageV

      Like in Code Geass.

      • Oh, that wasn’t one of the stories I was thinking of actually but that’s quite a good one too.

        • icecoffemix

And everybody outside and inside the universe heavily suspect Lelouch unhealthy obsession with his sister in the process. :p

  • Ed

No woman in the world is worth that much

  • Definitely not, but history has proven that men do it all the time for the mysterious species called “women”~

  • icecoffemix

Heh, this somehow made me think of evangelion.

  • Nemesis_Dawn

Hmmm…destroying the world for a girl you love? Modern setting?

Wow. I didn’t realize that Final Fantasy XIII-3 was actually going to be a Tales crossover title where you play as Caius.
    I keed. I keed.

Actually, this sounds interesting. It’d be nice if we saw this West, but I think the Western fanbase failed on the Graces F test, so I doubt it.

  • KotaroInugami

If she’s hot enough I would destroy the world twice. I don’t even need to think about it.

  • Tales of Destruction lol. Seriously didn’t Sands of Destruction already kind of did this plot with Morte and Kyrie?

  •  Definitely excited. Keep ’em coming, Baba-san!

  • riceisnice

Haven’t they used this plot before? (Tales of symphonia)

    • RaikageV

Except that they didn’t destroy the world, nor intended to do so.
Lloyd wanted to save both, Colette and the world(s).

    •  No because that wasn’t the beginning plot of ToS, and you weren’t destorying the world, you were saving it.  Besides if you played ToS, then you know that doing the certain thing to save the world wasn’t really saving it anyway

    • Jirin

No, they used it in Vesperia.

  • Souji Tendou

No I’m not. I rather destroy the girl rather than destroy the world. Tired of hearing the same “If you can’t save one person you can’t save the world” phrase over and over again.

    •  They never said it was that phrase for this and what is wrong with it

      • Souji Tendou

I know they haven’t said it but there’s a chance that phrase will make it into the game. What’s wrong with it? Hmmm, let’s just say I’m just being realistic about that matter. I know for sure that if one wants to obtain something, one must sacrifice other thing.

    • Crimson_Cloud

Meh, why should I sacrifice a girl that I love for sake of others? They will be happy and I will feel despair? Mankind is a rotten bitch anyway so I would rather choose a lovable companion. Of course it still depends if she is worth it though…

      • Souji Tendou

You definitely don’t have a soul of a true hero, young Padawan. :p

        • Crimson_Cloud

Haha, you know I’ve always played with a light side. Let me try how does the dark one feel for once. ;)

  • Save the chick, destroy the world. (=.=||||)

Well, would lk to see if its as modern lookinh as FFvs13.

    • thebanditking

Pass on that, Tales needs to retain its look. You don’t need FF13 graphics to have a mature modern story or characters.

      • Perhaps I should rephrase my statement: I would lk to see how they portray the modern feel for the setting. They can use back the anime look.

  • thebanditking

I love how in my mind I’m excited to see this new Tales game and am all hyped for the reveal, only to snap back to reality and realize I’m still waiting for Xillia lol. Oh Namco.

  • “Are you prepared to destroy the world for the sake of a girl?”
    As long as she’s not a loli….
Well, loli aside, I hope there will be romance between the main hero and heroine just like TO Destiny 2 (the one that never get localized)

    • boundries_san

      “As long as she’s not a loli….”

OBJECTION!!!!It should be as long as she is loli!!!

  • KingGunblader

I’m wondering how much this new setting will affect gameplay. Will we still have artes? Or some machinated variation thereof? :P

  • It’s gonna be called “Tales of Destruction” and in the end the main character is going to save the world and the girl.

Also, Celsius will transform into a motorcicle.

  • Darkrise

Depends on what kind of girl, if she’s a b!tch then no. Though I’ll accept yandere. =)

    • I’m pretty certain a Yandere would do the destroying perfectly fine all on their own. And how don’t Yanderes constitute “bitch” in your eyes?

  • new Tales of game; awesome

    still want Xillia though lol

  • Victoria [Rokuso3]

If you really destroy the world, it will be great. But everyone knows that at the end, both will be saved and the main character will be the hero for ages.

  • Luis Camargo

Please release on the PS3 so I can import it !
While you’re at it. Namco, I want Xillia in English !

  • “Would you destroy the world for a girl”? Feels like he just stole this theme from Radiant Stories.  Now back to the question.  It depends do i somehow live in a destroyed world.  IF yes, next would be if the girl is hot.  if she is but also a [email protected]  at the same time, then I would rather the world live.  >:]

  • CrimsonalCore

Destroy the world for a girl? Sound like a love story there, but… If you ask me, I believe she don’t want you to destroy the world just to save her since there are many innocent lives, animals, etc., the world she lives in, and she loves.

Of course you may be in love because she’s the world in your eyes that you live in… I’d save her, but destroying the world… I’m not sure about that. v,v This game should be interesting, though.

  • Jonathan Keycross

“Do it, destroy the world or the girl dies!”
“Sorry, but I barely know her and well it´s billions of lives at stake…so, yeah…”
More than the tagline, I´m more interested in the modern setting.
    16 days…

  • Domii

“Are you prepared to destroy the world for the sake of a girl?”

If the girl is a 12 year old dressed up like a stripper just like most recent JRPGs? Than yeah I will destroy the world………..right along with her. Now if she’s a grown woman who happens to look good, then that’s another story.

  • Jirin

If Tales is moving in a more grownup direction, awesome.  Want.  Namco, either PS3 it, or promise to localize.

Depends what he means ‘Destroy the world for a girl’.  Literally destroy the world because a cute girl told you to?  Or is it some more ethical dilemma like, people are trying to destroy this girl to save the world but you think she deserves to live?

Knowing Tales, probably the latter.  Some situation where you are putting the world in danger to protect a girl’s life.  Cause you kinda already did that in Vesperia.

  • E15

If she’s hawt I’ll destroy the world, the moon and the rest of the solar system.
My world domination plot aside, I hope we do get to destroy it for the sake of the plot.

  • Brandon001

I’d destroy the world if it meant MORE DAMN LOCALIZATIONS

    • But if you destroyed the world, there wouldn’t be any more localizations.

      • Niermyico

It’s a good thing he didn’t specify which world to destroy. ;)

  • Niermyico

Can I still destroy the world without having the girl involve? I’m liking the sound of destroying and world and such.

  • WingsOfEternity

So Richter is the main character of this game?

  • Palmer Nyako

plots where a hero has to do something for some chick is hella old and needs to be removed.
can these writers get good rofl?
“omg idk why jrpgs are dying, omg.”
i don’t understand how these writers can force the same story lines over and over and get mad when their products don’t sell as much as they would like.
gamers have been saving random chicks since 1981.seriously, can we get a new plot?

  • For some girl? Nah…maybe for a man though.

  • Solomon_Kano

Sounds cliche, but I do so love destroying the world…

  • My answer: “Let’s see some concept art first…”

  • kazehiro_himura

Heck… Caius would… the guy from World Destruction would too…

  • So, modern Tales? Sign me up already.

I’m fully expecting the main character to be using a baseball bat or some other form of sports equipment.

  • Göran Isacson

Well good mister writer, that depends. Is she a villain who wishes to conquer the world? Maybe- it depends on how charismatic she is. Is she a frail maiden who needs my help to get out of bed, eat breakfast, fight enemies, make her life-decisions BUT she’s got some kind of horrific power that can destroy the world if left unchecked, and your question is meant metaphorically like “will you fight to protect this helpless little waif even if the whole world is trying to off her for it’s own protection”, and if I choose to do so she will ask me NOT to because she’s such a sacrifical little bint?

Then no, Tales of-studio. No, I will not. Quote the Bard:
“If you game got problems I feel bad for you son
I juggle 99 quests but a Mary Sue ain’t one.”

    •  This is the best comment I have ever read, just for the last bit.

      • Göran Isacson

Thank you, I must admit however that it took me some time to come up with the finisher. I was thinking of just including the original lyrics but then I thought they were too unimaginative, and that I could probably put some RPG-ish spin on them.

On a serious note I DO hope the game won’t go down this highly clicheed route, but… welp. These are mostly unoriginal and derivative times, so hoping for the best and expecting the worst is probably the best tactic here.

        •  Lead females in Tales games are always a 50/50 proposition.  For every Tear or Rutee, who are actually (reasonably) capable, you’ve got a Colette (GOD I HATE HER) or a Shirley, who should basically abandoned to whatever sad fate awaits them.

  • …..wot? destroy a world for a female? Why would da boyz an’ i do dat for a female? we’d rather do it for one o’ doez ice cream thingz.

Humie Translator Robot:……..i think he just said he’d rather do it for a klondike bar. that being said, that’s not surprising, as orks are asexual and reproduce through spores…………they are essentially space mushrooms.

  • Like the modern idea, but the tagline isn’t convincing me. I’m pretty sure “girl you like is world destroying evil” has been done in JRPGs, but I will wait for more info and hope there’s more to it.  Come on, Baba, don’t let me down!

  • Nicolas Vasquez

that reminds me of scrapped princess.

  • Elemiel

If it’s a girl the MC met 4 seconds ago…. NO.

  • Chiupon

it’s probably been said already, but…
    “Tales of the Generic”.
I can’t imagine this is going to go anywhere creative. No scenario, even if the main character is a girl destroying the world for her sister or mom can make this not sound generic.

Tales of stopped at Vesperia for me.

    • fuzziinator

      learn to smile?

    •  Huh?

I mean, the Tales of series has never been known for it’s originality, but Vesperia was no more original than any other game in the series.  Why is that one special to you?

  • “Would you destroy the world for a girl?” So the next protagonist is Nier?

  • KyoyaHibari

Destroying the world would mean the destruction of Namimori High, like hell that will happen! I’ll bite her to death…

  • zaedaus

finally some romance story oriented, and also please make a protagonist that isn’t your typical shounen dude who shout “i will protect you” all the time

    • Chiupon

      He will be.

  • Childhood crush? Yes. No exceptions.

  • Historiata

    #Song of Saya

  • I’m excited by the possibility of a more modern setting in a Tales-style game.  Maybe a gun-wielding protagonist?  But the tagline does sound amazingly cliche.  In fact it sounds exactly like the plot of two or three other games in this same series.  Kind of leads me to believe that there’s more to it than it seems.  The Tales games have been doing better of late, so I’m gonna have hope.

  • No! What is one life weighed against the entire world? Let her die!

  • oh look a jrpg with an excessively emo main character and a ludicrous emotionally driven premise I couldn’t care less about, I’m totally going to throw away 60 bucks I could use to make a fire on this.

  • I would… for my current girl.

    *Chorus: Aaaaaaaaaaaaw*
