Pokédex 3D Pro Will Contain Info On Every Single Pokémon

By Ishaan . May 15, 2012 . 7:39am

Nintendo will release Pokémon Black/White 2 in North America and Europe sometime this fall, and that’s also when they’ll release Pokédex 3D Pro, an advanced version of the free Pokédex 3D app on the Nintendo eShop. Unlike Pokédex 3D, however, Pro will be a paid app.

There’s a good reason for this. Pokédex 3D Pro will contain entries every single Pokémon with the ability to sort and compare, sort and rank them, as well as details on what moves and abilities they can learn in six different languages. AR functions from the original Pokédex 3D will return, too, with the ability to take pictures of your Pokémon in the real world.

Additionally, instead of having to unlock new Pokémon entries like in Pokédex 3D, they’ll all be unlocked from the start in the Pro version. Nintendo haven’t announced a price for Pokédex 3D Pro yet, but we’ll keep our ears open for when they do.

  • Oh good, it’s about time something like this is coming out.  Having everything unlocked from the beginning makes up for having to pay for it.

    • aoihana

I think detailing every single Pokémon is what truly makes up for paying for it! (◕‿◕✿)

      • AuraGuyChris

        Or the six languages.

  • James Beatty

What i’m most excited about is that the pokedex 3D probably shows how the next pokemon game will look like on the 3DS. I imagine they will use these models for the game to keep dev costs lower

    • aoihana

Yeah, it wouldn’t make any sense to start from scratch! What kind of
Pokémon game do you think these models will be utilized for, or what game would you like to see them in?

Personally, I’d love to see a Pokémon Snap, or Pokémon Stadium. That’d be awesome! (◕‿◕✿)

      • Christopher Nunes

        Pokemon Snap 2 please!

And maybe a true 3D Pokemon Adventure game where you can customize your Player Character! Come on Nintendo, try it just once! I love playing Pokemon in 2D with 3D effects, but take the Pokemon Colosseum style and expanded!

It’s a great idea and worth a try!

      • Solomon_Kano

Honestly, I hope they keep sprites in the main series and just make them look better with each entry. Keep that core in the RPG games, and give us a Snap 2 and Stadium 3 for 3DS! It’d be perfect!

        • You pretty much summed up my feelings on this perfectly. ^_^

    • maybe a side game or something but theywill still be using sprites for most things

  • aoihana

Ah ~ that’s awesome! I always wanted a complete Pokédex, because I wasn’t familiar with most Pokémon in Pokédex 3D. I’m pretty much more G1, honestly. The newest Pokémon I know of are in the Cynoquil era! (*^ワ^*)

    • Anime10121

Yep thats the same way I was before Black and White, the farthest I had played was Gold and Silver (which is still my favorite btw), I had bought Diamond when it released but got bored after getting my first badge.

You really need to try B&W if you get a chance as they are quite awesome.

      • aoihana

The only Pokémon games I really played were Blue and Emerald. Yeah, definitely. I read that B&W are amazing games. Which is your favorite, Black or White? I think White has a more interesting Legendary. (◕‿◕✿)

        • Anime10121

I only played White because they are pretty much the same game (barring a few regional differences) and because as you said, I found White’s Pokemon more interesting (and it had far more of my favorite returning Pokemon endgame).

But Im gonna go for Black 2 when it releases so I can try the other side as well:)

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

Made a Pokemon trainer sprite of you :3

  • malek86

I don’t think they’ll do it because people will pay for this anyway, but it would be nice if, for example, they gave out codes to download it for free with every first print copy of Pokemon B/W 2. Or some kind of similar promotion.

  • Anime10121

Maybe they are FINALLY prepping a major graphical revolution for the series on its first 3DS entry.  I see no other reason to create full 3D renditions of each and every Pokemon so far.  I hope to see great things (now that Black and White have brought me back in the Pokemon fold) in it’s first mainline entry on the 3DS.

    • this has nothing to do with gamefreak………they kep saying they lovethe sprite style and there is still so much more they can do with it

      • TomSkylark

I really don’t buy that argument from them anymore–the sprites for 5th Gen looked like hell. They were extremely dithered and the animations certainly didn’t make up for it.

If they want to take the time to make beautiful sprites for 6th Gen, then by all means they should stick with sprites. But the results have been inconsistent at best.At this point I’d much prefer 3D models since we know the hardware limitations are certainly out the window by now (and probably were for the previous generation–it was likely more of a memory problem since the larger DS cards, IIRC, didn’t come out until later, and were probably expensive for a while).

        • Rpgnut

           no way sprites are going

      • komiko12

I just wish that the sprites were done better. You see the enemy Pokemon sprite is good but your Pokemon looks kind of pixelated or something.

  • Shadowman

I really wish they make another Pokemon Colosseum for the 3DS

  • So all from gens 1-5 will be unlocked when you buy it? It kinda takes out the fun the free version has but I did hear some people weren’t able to complete it because it stopped giving them new Pokemon everyday. Oh well I want a cute little Charmander standing on my hand :)

  • boundries_san

Ohhhh at last Eevee and all its evolution in my hand now.^^

  • takopako

now they have all the 3d sprites that they need for my pokemon 3d coliseum game!

  • Wait, so there will now be nice, shiny, and usable models for each and every Pokemon?

Yeah, no bloody excuses remain now. We’d best see these put to use in the next full on Pokemon game. >:|

    • Solomon_Kano

Well, now that brings into question how they’ll go about animating battles.

Will they look like they do now, just with polygons instead? Will they add more motion to battles? What about the world outside of battles?

I’d like to think that they intend for the next gen of Pokemon to use 3D and BW2 is just a buffer so they can answer all of those questions, but I could also see them being wary of such a drastic change. After all, beyond battles, the series has been moving more and more into a cel-shaded polygonal aesthetic with each entry. I don’t see them suddenly abandoning that for 3DS rather than expanding on it.

      • What I would imagine and expect (from the scenario I’m describing here) would be something pretty much identical to Pokemon Stadium as far as battles are concerned.

They’re spending all this time and money (salaries for the artists) now to develop full 3d models with animations for every Pokemon to date. For one, it seems way too good and costly of an asset pool to simply use only on an updated eShop Pokedex. Second, I think everyone can agree that a handheld Pokemon that finally used Stadium/Colosseum level graphics would definitely boost sales of the 3DS.

        • Solomon_Kano

“Second, I think everyone can agree that a handheld Pokemon that finally used Stadium/Colosseum level graphics would definitely boost sales of the 3DS.”

I’m doubtful of that. Any new Pokemon RPG would boost 3DS sales independent of if it looked like an extension of the DP/BW style or if it looked like Stadium. Everything you said prior is a very real possibility, that though? Yea, that really would have no factual basis, it’s just not a “definite” thing at all. It certainly -could-, but we’ve no way to prove it would do any different than the 3DS seeing a sprite-based Pokemon game.

As for the assets going to this Pokedex, I agree that it seems a bit too good to just be going to this little eShop app. Though, that could perhaps be because they’re developing other non-mainline games with this new style (the AR game, for one, looks to be using these models). This could be a sign for the main series, or it could be for another spin-off. I’d say at this point we probably do have an equal chance at both. Well, either way, I’m interested to see where they take this.

          • Perhaps some bad word choice there, but I didn’t take that as trying to claim or “prove” such as factual basis. =P If you took it as such, my apologies for bad wording.

Working off personal experience, I know a lot of peeps who enjoyed Pokemon at one point and are tired of it for one reason or another. Sure Pokemon in general would be a system seller, but something as monumental as finally having Pokemon -stadium/Colosseum/revolution- on a Nintendo handheld seems like it’d draw said peeps back into Pokemon. (As opposed to just yet another sprite based Pokemon) It’s a lot more wow factor to draw people in, much like terrible Michael Bay movies.

Sure yet another Pokemon title (as we all expect with B&W2) would be a 3DS system seller. I’m merely saying that (again, off of anecdotal experience speaking with fans of the series) I would expect a new battle system with 3D visuals to generate a LOT more hype, and a lot more attention thus drawing in even more crowds than the tried and true fans.

          • Solomon_Kano

            Oh ok, my bad.

I agree that having a Stadium/Colosseum game could be huge for a handheld, but I don’t think the main series’ seeing a visual change would do much. I guess we’ll find out if it happens though.

A new battle system though, now THAT would bring hype. A lot of people likely fell off Pokemon over time for the same reason people complain about shooters — beyond aesthetics, the games don’t change too much. A new battle system would probably be bigger than anything else they could do with the series.

  • TomSkylark

This is cool and all, but the problem remains that you can’t suspend DS games in order to launch the Pokedex, so you’ll still have to play on your DS with the 3DS serving as your Pokedex. It’s not a big deal, really, but it seems like something of a design flaw for what could have been a really streamlined way to play…

    • Yup. I always thought it was really unfortunate that they weren’t able to find a solution to this issue. They’re finally cashing in on the idea of offering their own, official detailed Pokémon guide, but if you can’t view it while playing, it sort of defeats the purpose.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Hoenn 3DS Remake better use these models  or like everyone else want a *Pokemon Colosseum 3*

    • Solomon_Kano

Honestly, I’d want a Hoenn remake to just get upgraded sprite art. I just loved the look of that gen, it was perfect to me.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

who knows they might make it where you can make your own trainer

        • Solomon_Kano

As my favorite gen, it also had my favorite design for the MC so… no dice lol.

          Brendan >>>

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

aww but come on you rather play with a per made MC then your self? * Brendan *Emerald* is my fave design too*

          • Solomon_Kano

In this gen? Yes. I’d be more than happy to make my own trainer in the next Pokemon gen, but I’d always take the original trainer in a remake.

  • When they said Black & White 2 i said eh…i’d rather have a 3DS one, i’d rather have a new games, blah blah.

And then every week they release more info, tie ins, Best Wishes 2 (cartoon) is coming.  I can’t take it.  MUST BUY POKEMON.  MUST COLLECT.

  • Christopher Nunes

    Gotta Catch ‘Em All! Pokemon!

Yes, the ultimate Pokedex in the palm of my hand and worth every penny for it! I wonder how much it’s going to cost! This is going to be awesome!

  • rurin

I hope you don’t have to pay to unlock any…

    • Solomon_Kano

      From the article:

“Pro will be a paid app.”

“Additionally, instead of having to unlock new Pokémon entries like in Pokédex 3D, they’ll all be unlocked from the start in the Pro version.”

      • rurin

Sorry >.< I read it wrong

        • Solomon_Kano

No problem, we all miss things every now and then.

  • Solomon_Kano

I honestly hope this isn’t a preview of where the series is heading visually. Not because it looks bad or anything, but because I’ve always loved the series’ sprite-work.

I do hope this leads to another game for 3DS though like, I dunno, maybe a… Snap 2? A Stadium 3 (I mean come on, look at it: Stadium 3. On 3DS. Stadium 3DS!)? Snap 2 could be especially cool with 3DS’ AR, so I just really hope this doesn’t say anything of the main games.

  • Unless they update the app again after this paid version, it’ll be somewhat useless next gen depending on how many new pokemon are created, if any.

  • Go2hell66

i know they’re a lot of die hard pokemon fanatics out there but how likely is it that people are actually going to pay for this app, most of this info can already be found elsewhere. it really should have just been an update to the original app
