This Is Persona 4: Golden’s New Opening Movie By Madhouse

By Ishaan . May 24, 2012 . 10:00am

You may recall that animation studio, Madhouse, known for producing the Death Note and Marvel Anime shows, created a new opening movie for Persona 4: Golden. Atlus showed the new opening for the updated PlayStation Vita game today, and you can watch it below:

  • Lightthrower

I prefer the original intro :-(

    •  I second this.

    • XiaomuArisu

       I like it….no,really!
I dont see it as better or worse but as a different opening with a different song. And dont forget you dont need to watch it to play the game and the first opening could be still there.

      • I support this…. even though its a bit SHAFT.

  • Shadowman

Dang. Yosuke now how to dance with that trash can.

  • leadintea

No thanks. The music sucks and the video is trippy as all hell. The only thing I really liked was Naoto’s dancing.

    • RmanX1000

Naoto put on a hat while turning…. Thats, dancing?

  • rebecasunao

The song isn’t as catchy and powerful as the original… Too bad.

The movie intro is really well done and pretty, even though that dancing thing is kind of awkward (especially Chie’s humping).

    • AuraGuyChris

And the studio suddenly taking a liking to Yosuke’s “one scene wonder” with the trashcan on him.

  • Of course I like the original opening the best. But man, the dancing is great. LOOKIT YU’S MOVES.

  • Aww I like this opening but the feel is completely different from the original

  • I think this is horrible, really. Might be the worst persona opening I saw IMO. I think the original intro reflect in a better way the main themes in Persona 4.

  • DuskSharkEX

…I like how the opening also showed…what happened on 7/10 in the game.

  • To be quite honest, I’m just not really feeling it with this intro, it doesn’t feel very…Persona. If that makes sense. =/

  • Well, I never thought I’d dislike something for Persona 4…well aside from the anime’s version of the King’s Game, but this is actually pretty irritating. Not the epic intro I was expecting after playing through P2:IS and P3P. That’s disappointing. That’s not going to prevent me from getting the game. It’s just going to prevent me from watching the intro over and over.

  • Zero_Destiny

Ha Ha Ha Ha This is great Madhouse, I love it. It’s really colorful and fun. I wanna see Hunter x Hunter get some Opening animations like this for Greed Island (if they cover Greed Island that is). The only thing that made me really stop for a second is Teddie’s name being Kuma, I wonder if Atlus USA will just leave it as is or if they’ll have an alternate version or something. Ether way it’s fine by me.

  • XxDestinyXx

WAY too light and cheery of an opening for this game. I could see it if this was some cheap High School dating sim… but were talking about PERSONA here.
I have seen fan-made openings on Youtuibe better than this garbage.

  • Nyandroid

What the hell!? This looks like a mockery of the awesomeness of Persona 4. ._.

  • At first I was like, LOL THEY’RE DANCING
Then I was like, WHY IS THIS SO IRRITATING

  • Sevyne

That was terrible…I want the old intro back.

  • Closet_Ninja

well that made me dizzy with all those colours

  • Zertan

    This is skip-able right?

  • MrKappa

Boy oh boy, Persona fans are the pickiest bunch I have ever seen in regards to RPGs.
Complaints about the P4U cover and then this too. It wasn’t all that bad you know. Just look at Kanji and that two step.

  • I would’ve liked to have the choice of having a female protagonist like they did with the reP3 but eh~ Whatever~

  • klkAlexar

Why are they dancing? Because someone died? Eh, this looks cheap and I hate the music.

  • AuraGuyChris

Are we sure that this isn’t a Nico Nico Douga video?

  • canarinta

Okay so Hanamura is dancing with a garbage bin?

    • RmanX1000

Referencing when he crashed into a garbage can. Oh, btw: SPOILERS: HE CRASHES INTO A GARBAGE CAN.

      • canarinta

Oh yeah, from the game. Wait, did they do the trashcan bit in the series?

        • RmanX1000

          *facepalm* just Persona 4…

    • Hiimdaisy and strain42 portrayal of dat scene is equally funny.

  • Juan Barreto

this opening doesnt have the “persona” feeling at all ,its horrible

    • im…not liking this at all the original was way better

  • Oh MY SHAFT! The original one is already a bit of SHAFT-ty….. Wht thing r the animators smoking? Not tht I complain.

  • Dyne

They are calling him Hero? did his mom and dad call him that as they knew he do big things for the world?

    • f you think taht awesome/lol/WTH/anything, how ’bout Emperor on the dragon peak (Ryugamine Mikado)?

  • MonsieurEek

I think images of neon-colored corpses set to bouncy music does actually kinda capture the tone of Persona.

  • Yuzh

    New hippie generation

    • Beautiful Daisy ♥

This is what Teddie/Kuma sees when he’s tripping… ^_^ lol

  • kazehiro_himura

    Too many colors… weird dance…
    Nonetheless the song is nice.
Creepy… this is the first Persona that I absolutely dont wanna play… the original is enough for me… give us a sequel Atlus and stop with the remakes and ports… where’s the new Raidou? Digital Devil Saga? Persona 5?
I am the only one that think’s that Atlus has been slacking at this gen? Only one game for the consoles…. and “tons” of “remakes” on the portables… Nippon Ichi and Gust, for comparison sake, are making one game after another…

    • Yuzh

nope you are not the only one.

    • RmanX1000

Persona 5 WAS announced to be in full on development mode back in August so calm your pants down sir.

    • amagidyne

As that other guy said, they’re working on P5. I doubt the core Persona team put too much time into The Golden, since everything in it is either small (snowmen, a new character, etc) or easily delegated (mini-games, bicycles).

While I want more details on P5 (and a new Raidou, because that would be awesome), I’m not sure what you’re expecting them to do. This is only one team, and it took them three years to go from P4 to Catherine. The rest of Atlus is making other stuff, like the three Trauma Center games that still do exist on the Wii.

Also.. NIS? So far, what have they made on the home consoles this gen? Disgaea 3 and 4? Unless you mean portable games, in which case yeah, they’ve been releasing a lot.

      • kazehiro_himura

I am expecting new games… expecting they to be as awesome as they were in the PS2.

For me Catherine was an Epic Fail, a dumb game that could have been made for cellphones (Yeah I also hate Heavy Rain).

While Atlus has only made Catherine… and two Trauma Center games, the rest were for portables…

Also honestly while I have both Trauma Center games… where is the JRPG’s for my PS3, 360 or Wii?

I was expecting that Atlus would be like Gust, one new game after another, Atelier Rorona, Totori, Meruru and now Ayesha.

Yeah… is just me whining… and waiting for a new SMT…

    • Look, DDS is over.

      Get over it.

      • kazehiro_himura

        Not really.

Prequels and spin off or even something online with co-op (like Imagine) would be great.

        • There was a prequel game for DDS released only in Japan for cellphones. Don’t know much about it.

But it’s best to leave the DDS games untouched. Those games span such a terrific experience (although I didn’t like the story that much in DDS2).

  • All those colours !!! I think I am still seeing so much rainbows…

Not bad, but I liked the older one more as well.

  • Guest

    What is this…..only in Japan……(._.;)

    • XiaomuArisu

       Think positiv!
Thanks to “Only in japan”you got EtnaXD

      • Guest

    • Micheal, isn the game confirmed 4 US release?

      • Guest

        That’s not what I meant.

        • The cover? Maybe the eng ver is more epic?

  • Freud_Hater

I hope this is some kind of… extra opening, not the one that plays every time. The original is far better.

  • canarinta

    Rewatching it, now I’m curious:

What’s with that weird dance? CHIE THAT’S NOT EVEN DANCING.
    Hero? That’s kinda lame.
    most importantly…..

  • Hinataharem

You could get diabetes from that opening.

Nonetheless, I liked it. I dunno what everyone is getting so huffy over.

  • RmanX1000

*sigh* oh you guys and your bitching… Im starting to think this game will have as bad a fanbase as FF7’s fanbase. And thats BAD lemme tell you. Just appreciate the swag dancing that just loops one dance move a few times.

    • cj_iwakura

Tall claim, there’s not nearly as many Persona fans, not by half. Also not as big a divide in the FF community. SMT is getting real fractured lately.

    • LynxAmali

Then clearly you haven’t met the Sonic fanbase.

      Dear god.

      • RmanX1000

You’re replying to the only sane Sonic fanboy left.

  • Guest

Oh my, this is delicious! (✿‐^▽^‐✿)/
    *Dances with them*

    • Guest

  • Love the detail about Rise being the only one that actually “dances”. Hero/Souji/Yu is just a walk with swag on, Yosuke is playing with the garbage can, Kanji is just walkinh with style, Chie and Yukiko is just moving with style, Naoto is another walking with style and Teddie is awkward robot dance.

    Fun stuff.

  • Christine Bainbridge

Happy fun murder times for everyone!!!!!
    … oh wait

  • SupaPhly

    I actually like it
you could still probably watch the old intro, they had the old intro in persona 3 portable and persona 2 portable

  • kool_cid414

As a fan of the series and even more so a fan of the music (FREAKING LOVE SHOJI MEGURO!)I like the song on it’s own but it doesn’t have the feeling and passion that I get from the other songs of the series. I think I’ve said this before but I never even heard of the Persona series until I happened across the opening for Persona 3 and after wiping away the tears (I cry when I hear good music sue me) I fell in love with the game and got it immediately  and fell in love the game all over again. The case was similar with 4’s opening which in my opinion wasn’t as good as p3’s opening was still a really good song and I really enjoyed the stylized imagery. In this one while I liked the dancing and the music for the most part it just didn’t have the passion I felt from the other openings. I may have been the animation studio which I think is different from the original  but it just didn’t have the feel of a persona game like some said earlier. In my opinion a good opening can make or break a game tv show or anime for me. I can tell how much I’m going to like the show by watching the opening. I just didn’t feel the passion that the series has always provided from the openings. That being said if this song was on a different series or anime I wouldn’t mind it.

  • SetzerGabbiani

    I like it.

  • Beautiful Daisy ♥
Just posting this for a little comparison ^_^
I like the original opening a little bit better because it is so smooth and catchy… but I can’t bring myself to hate this one either.  It’s a bit goofier and it blasts the pyschodelics to the max, but there’s something undeniably likable about it XD lol

    • Niermyico

I mean really, they needed something better to top California Potato Powers. :P

  • Oi, Don’t change wot ain’t broken!

  • Niermyico

I like the song and the opening by itself, but come on. Even Persona3 FES’s OP was better than the first version.

Heck, Id be totally fine with them using the second opening from Persona 4 The Animation.

    • Sevyne

Hell yeah! I loved the intro for the animation.

the new into for The Golden just seems more fitting for ending credits.

  • I rather the intro of Persona 3 than this. The former is more cyberpunkish as oppose to the latter’s quirky/surreal style.

  • Guest

lol Chie needs to stop right now. That doesn’t look right in the slightest.

  • heartless141

What can I say? Not bad, but not hip enough tO be a persona’s OP
    The pv is cool though

  • vileBrenman

Nooooooooo! they should have used that make history song they have in the trailers. I don’t care that that’s the battle song honestly that would have been sooo mush better than harmonicas. The Video was great though like a persona 4 acid trip but I really wish that make history was the open and not this blandish background music. Ok part of this song is ok in the middle but the end is awkward. i really wish it was make history that song screams p4 and is catchy

  • vileBrenman

  • Jahmere Durham

(Sigh) “Goes back to PS3 to finish p4”

  • Rohan Viajar

they’re probably gonna have both OP’s (this one and the old one) on the game. Just like they did for P3 FES.

  • This opening is so trippy. Like Madhouse took some LSD before deciding what to do with it.

  • WilliamJasper

    I’m gonna love this game.

  • LynxAmali

    Trippy animation.

Not bad. I got a chuckle out of Naoto.

As for the song itself, meh. Not bad, not too great.

  • ZBaksh386

it has a strange charm to it.

  • Michael Joseph

I like the feel of the new intro, but of course the old intro will be in the game too.  Persona 4 was supposed to be a more upbeat game in the first place when it was being conceived, hence the yellow or golden color scheme to the original P4 game on the ps2.

This new intro just gives more emphasis on its brighter themes. (yosuke trashcan, teddy, scooters, etc.)

  • Rogerrmark

Meanwhile, Persona 2:Eternal Punishment continues to sell horrible in Japan, because it’s not ”Otaku” enough.

  • Rogerrmark

    I’m not saying I won’t buy P4 Golden,though.

  • Asura

Persona intros have since P3 and P4 been defined by being hip, there’s no going back. I want the hip back. This ain’t hip.

  • PoweredByHentai

As I watched the video and saw Naoto dancing, I couldn’t help but think of Strongbad Email’s “techno” song.

Now, replace the “Dancing Robots” with “Dancing Naoto”.  XD

  • to all you whinny little brats that need to grow up and learn to like stuff instead of bashing it i am going to buy this no matter what but first i need a psvita >_>

    • Guest

That’s nice…..but saying “whinny little brats” isn’t helping. I think that wasn’t even necessary. Just because some people has a different opinion towards the opening or whatever of P4G doesn’t really mean that they won’t buy it (which basically is the only thing that matters IMO. Whether they buy it or not). Picky as they may be, remember that they’re still Persona fans. :)

      •  true but a fan will never be picky about stuff i mean i played 3 and 4 and then 1 and 2 and every time people bash at the ops

        • haqua

“A fan will never be picky about stuff”.
W – what? Fans will always be picky. Of course, the good fans stick with the game/company ’till the very end regardless of what they’re being picky about, but, still.

          •  i guess you got to a point but i mean if people  bash the ops all the time they try to get it there way not what the company wants tho and i am loyal fan of atlus

          • So, since I disliked the Opening, but am still completely willing to purchase, day 1 to be exact, P4:G, I’m not supporting the company. Many of us are just stating our opinions on the new opening. The opening does not define the entirety of the game. It’s only what shows up before the game and is easily skipped. Doing that does not make someone less of a fan or support Atlus less. It just means there’s something that is disliked.

I have yet to see a comment from someone saying that they won’t purchase the game due to the new opening. So, liking the new opening does not make someone a better/more loyal fan than someone who does not.

        • AuraGuyChris

“a fan will never be picky about stuff”

I’d like to see the happy place you think you come from.

        • Zertan

Wow. and I thought being called not a fan of Spider-man’s because of disliking One More Day was bad.  You manage to up it.

    • TheSquishyTanker

Whinny? Like, the sound a horse makes?

  • Clifford Michael

Hate the opening, but it’s not gonna stop me from buying this. The main reason I even bought a PS Vita.

  • 4shiki

I love it very much! Bravo, Madhouse.

  • haqua

This opening is the best opening because of Yu.
And to everyone who doesn’t like this opening, pretend this video is the opening instead, okay?

P1PSP theme song, but, who cares ~

    • well i am buying this no matter what

    • Guest

Yes. The dance of a true “King”. XD

      • Guest

…..Oh, I see what you did there. XD

    •  yeah that true but people need to stop complaining about every thing  about games oh it not pretty graphics or oh the Gameplay  sucks

  • Alexander Aubert

i love it, i love the song.
the opening make me happy :)

  • Not bad.

  • thundergodCN

Screw the murders, just wanna dance

  • Vadim Merzhey

Yu’s and Naoto’s dances were the best

  • takopako

i love the cute songs and the cute dances. openings with dancing anime characters win. and that is that.

  • Brandon001

love it, MC Broke it downnnnnnnn

    everybody broke it dowwnnnnn

    looks awesome

  • amagidyne

+1 for not using “Yuu Narukami”
+1 for not using “Souji Seta”
-1 for seemingly random use of symbols
+/-0 because the headphone jack on my laptop is broken and I can’t turn the speakers up too high without waking my girlfriend
+1 for making me think that it would make sense if you could take LSD in a Persona game (it really would)
-1 for throwing his glasses into the air (that’s a terrible idea, especially if it’s supposed to be symbolic!)
+0.5 for the symbols not actually being random and -0.5 for being kind of cheap-looking.

I guess it’s a net positive. What I can hear of the intro isn’t anywhere near as good as the original song, but it would be unfair to judge it by the tinny, faint sound of my laptop. Not really sure why it matters if it isn’t as good as the original OP. I’m sure they’ll include that one too.

    • ThatGuy3190_7

When he threw his glasses in the air, well, I’m going to consider it as a spoiler since he does do that at a specific part of the game’s storyline.

  • ThatBlackGuy

pretty nice opening still prefer the original but this one is growing on me.

  • DHInc

Welcome to the 70’s! Persona Style.

  • Aoshi00

I don’t think the new intro is that bad.. and it’s not really meant to be compared to the original, instead it ‘s more complimentary or an alternative fun take, the Yousuke trash can dancing is priceless :)!  I assume those who are getting P4 Golden are mostly people who have played the original on the PS2 and watched the anime?  I don’t think this humorous and stylishly funky opening is meant for 1st time players, even though there might be some.. as a fan I just thought it’s fun.. great dancing animation, Kudos to Madhouse.

BTW, anyone know what happened to the Vita case/accessory?  It seems to be sold out everywhere, on Amazon Jpn (there’s a marketplace seller listing) or elsewhere like AmiAmi, YesAsia even took down the item.. I kinda regret I didn’t pre-order it when I had the chance..

    • amagidyne

A lot of it won’t make sense without playing the game, like the rabbit popping up in Kanji’s bit. Was that in the anime? I never got around to watching much more than an episode of it.

  • This is a REALLY weird musical/visual cross… ME GUSTA!

  • Xerain

It’s better than the P3 FES OP.  Hopefully they will include a remastered version of the original OP as well, though I can understand the difficulties in updating it for the wide screen format.

  • THE RETURN OF THE SWAG DANCES. In all seriousness though, Rise’s dance had me  bleeding all over my keyboard from my nose.

  • Am I on acid?? Its so colorful… O_O

  • DDanny

Looks like a rainbow got aborted all over the place
Here’s hoping Soul Hackers opening is not a random disaster like this

  • The older one was better. Now all they´ve done is show of the scooter and ski scenes. Basically just showing of the new things from the old version.

Mad House, why you so freaking bad nowadays? You were good once.

  • Deep Eyes

OMG! I love it! Love the song, love the animation, love Rise and Naoto! *-*…. I want to play it so bad >_<…

  • Original is way better, imo.

  • neetyneety

Just looking at the thumbnail I can tell it’s going to be… BEAR-Y PSYCHEDELIC. (yes, the bear pun was necessary)

EDIT: Ok, after actually watching it, here are my thoughts: Song is good, but I thought the first one was catchier and better, animation is also quite nice, it’s just that I feel the intro itself doesn’t quite reflect on the themes of the game. All in all, I found it to be delightfully strange (if that makes any sense).

  • …Is it just me, or did I see a peeled banana during Yosuke’s dancing and a Pink Bunny in Kanji’s dancing?

    • You r not the only one bro. *Pass LSD to Kaito*

  • OOC song aside, must say it’s an amusing watch.

Didn’t know Mayumi Yamano, Saki Konishi and King Moron are in it as well danci…

    Oh, wait.

    They’re DEAD.

…Who wants to talk about murders? :D

    • Uhm….. Did someone say SPOILERS ALERT!?

…………..Guys?GUYS!? I think we really sh- *YOU R NOT MEEEEEE*=.=

      •  It’s symbolic.

  • Yuri

    Someone tell Chie that kicking around in the air is NOT dancing. -_-;

  • AceWildCard

    Well that was certainly something.

  • Xeawn

I…kinda hate the new theme song…and I feel bad because I don’t know that I’ve ever not liked a Shoji Meguro song…

I hope they kept the original opening in also like with P3Portable

  • keithmaxx

What in the world was that? I think I just lost interest in it altogether…

What has been seen… cannot be unseen. O.o

  • I will say all my comments in one post!!!
    1. PSYCHEDELIC DUDE HEHEHE………2. Is this a tribute to Michael Jackson?
    3. P1 Serious, P2 Serious, P3 Serious, P4 Seriously WTF!!!!!
    4. Love the music it’s really relaxing +1 to Shoji again!!!
    5. What ever you say the MC still cool!
    6. I will say this over and over!!! Bring the Persona Collection to the PS3/Xbox 360 NOW!!!!

    That is all thank you….

  • Victoria [Rokuso3]

  • It’s quite interesting (and sad too) that the intro focuses way too much on the “new features” and kinda makes you forget that the game is actually about a murder mystery.

And the music…is horrendous. Not saying P3/P4 (or the PSP remake of P1, geez) had perfect music, but Persona shouldn’t have J-pop music. It’s just not right, damn.

    • Altritter

…But the old opening of the game IS J-Pop, as well as the battle theme, as WELL as the themes that play while you’re wandering around. There was plenty of it in Persona 3, too! I don’t want to sound insulting but this is the most inane thing I’ve seen all week since J-Pop has been a part of these games for a while now.

      • cj_iwakura

It had more melody to it, though.  Especially the visuals, they told a story. Not just dancing.

        • Altritter

I have no idea why your reply doesn’t address any of the things I actually said, but I wasn’t saying that the old one wasn’t better (I do prefer it) but to say “Persona shouldn’t have J-pop music” was the statement that got me.

    •  Persona without catchy J-Pop is like Final Fantasy without chocobos. It’s one of the best parts of the game. But if you hate it that much, you can just mute it.

      • So, you’re saying that Persona 2 isn’t Persona at all?

    • isfuturebright

From P3 and on they decided to go more pop to make the franchise more easy to get in to.

  • KOTheWorld

Suddenly I feel the urge to dance alongside them

  • Meh. Not really digging this opening.

  • vivaluis59

I was really excited when i saw this article, yet I am very disappointed. The music was “meh”. The characters dancing animation was horrendous, and the lack of meaning was a let down. Well still going to get it, but just something that didn’t live up to it expectations I guess.

EDIT: watch in HD it makes a difference, that dancing does look smoother but at the same time still not really liking it.

  • My friends are disappointed in this, and the more I think about it, so am I.

The music was just too weird this time to be cool, and I expected MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more from Madhouse, the animators of Redline and Hellsing. Let’s hope the original is also here.

  • I like the original better. The harmonica makes me think of Roseanne, and the cast really needs some dance lessons…

  • Alexander Aubert

maybe atlus is hiding P4G opening somewhere

  • Okay, I love the original opening to bits and pieces but….this one has the main characters dancing. DANCING.

  • Go2hell66

    lol omg the swag

have to say i also prefer the original but damn this is pretty cool in its own right

  • I am disappoint…
But it’s not like I’m going to be playing this anyway.
Atlus, it wouldn’t kill you to give us the option of playing as a female character.
