Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Gets A Manga Series Of Its Own

By Ishaan . May 28, 2012 . 8:30am

Atlus are expanding Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor to other forms of media outside of games. The latest issue of Kodansha’s Monthly Shounen Sirius magazine debuted a Devil Survivor manga based on the first game this past weekend.

The story and art work for the Devil Survivor manga series are being worked on by Satoru Matsuba, although Suzuhito Yasuda is still credited for the original character designs.

Like the game version, the Devil Survivor manga takes place in Tokyo, during a demon invasion, and follows the young group that sets out to fight it.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor was originally published by Atlus for the Nintendo DS. Last year, Atlus released an updated version of the game for the Nintendo 3DS, titled Devil Survivor: Overclocked. A sequel, Devil Survivor 2, exists on the Nintendo DS as well.

and i will be reading it!

  • The character design is looking better than expected. But I will still read it and buy it!

  • Victoria [Rokuso3]

Atlus: “OMG. Even Siliconera SMT fans are sick of Persona 4. What can we do…? Wait. We still own Devil Survivor!!”

BTW, now speaking seriously, it’s quite weird that the manga is from Devil Survivor 1, and not of the newer sequel.

    • I’m not sick of it o_O

    • Bruno Cesar

DS2 already has a manga by Nagato Sagaki.

    • Sal

According to Wikipedia, DeSu 2 already has a manga.

    • Well, I am sick of P4.

And Devil Survivor is really, really good, although I am not a huge fan of it’s artstyle.

    • Yes, DeSu2 has a manga, but design wise, DeSu1 design looks closer to Suzuhito Yasuda design.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Whyyy can’t Suzuhito Yasuda ever do the art for the manga? Same thing happened with Digimon!
Ah well…I’m still happy for this.

    • Maybe he have a tight schedule? Or he can’t draw demons and digimon?

      • cj_iwakura

He is just a character artist, the demons are still credited to Kaneko, and someone else did the Septentriones in DS2.

        • boundries_san

The author of Bokurano did thhe Septentriones.^^

    • I agree, wish he was doing the manga himself.  Either way, if you really want a manga of his, Yozakura Quartet is decent.

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

Whoa. Didn’t even know about that – I’ll check it out. Thanks.

      • M’iau M’iaut

I like YQ in how it handles the trope ‘normal’ human surrounded by his monster harem. When the reveal about ‘what is really going on’ happens, YQ handles what could be otherwise seen as trolling on the part of the author surprisingly well.

  • My favorite game ever as a manga?  No complaints (expect for the obligatory “localize it” one).  This also makes my dream of Studio Brain’s Base doing an anime of Devil Survivor just a tad more possible.  Life is good.

  • Keyanf

So the DeSu 1 MC will finally get a name?

And after all this time of using Simon “Digger” Starlo.

    • Herok ♞

They could find some way to avoid giving him a name.

      • LynxAmali

         Go with the universal “Heero.”

        See what I did there?

        Okay. Shutting up now.

        • boundries_san

U mean…. Mission failed. *Self Destruct*?

          • LynxAmali

            That was the joke.

            And it being pronounced Hero.

        • Herok ♞

Wow you actually made me guffaw with that comment.

        • Fun Fact: DS2 MC name is Hiro Kageyama.

    • Vivian Mai

His name is Kazuya in the manga. I forgot his family name, though interestingly enough, Naoya isn’t introduced with Kazuya’s family name, unlike in the game…

  • KHSoraKeyBlade

I’m still waiting for the games to come to Europe……

  • Related, MC Manga name is Minegiki Kazuya IIRC.

DeSu2 MC is Kageyama Hiro by the way.

  • I only give them names when they don’t have any. After that, the name I use is the official for me (dont care about the anime/manga after that) but if it has one I don’t change it (like P2, Tatsuya)

  • No No

I just recently started playing this too, currently addicted to it.

  • SirRichard

At least it isn’t Persona 4 again.

Atlus seem intent on getting their money’s worth out of their games now, must be on a particularly good popularity kick lately.

  • Roberto Armando Iraheta

    Man, Atlus wants that money.

  • AzureNova

    Yes, yes and more yes!

  • AuraGuyChris

Is Yuzu going to have some sort of whining close to “I want to get outta here” in every page?

    • Don’t be so negative. Think “YooHoo” and “Otakuro” or “Atsubro”.

  • Hm, I like this.

  • boundries_san

    Bishonen DS launched!!!!

  • I’m okay with this, the game is heaps of fun. Looking forward to read this manga!

  • i iz interested in what da battle scenez will look like considerin’ dey is first person with no animations in da gamez.

    • In the DS2 manga TUTORIAL FIGHT, they use pipes to attack the demons. And after tht, the way the demons attack is similar to tht of those of Pokemon and Persona anime.

  • Oh good, something other than Persona 4 getting something. It’s kinda funny. To this day, I wish they actually did a Persona 2 anime based off of the anime trailer that went with Eternal Punishment. …However, I don’t think it would feel the same if you have the animators of today rather than back then. Had a different tone with the artwork.

…Hell, even a proper Shin Megami Tensei anime (well, besides Megami Tensei and Devil Children) would be pretty sweet.

  • I wonder which ending will be the one chosen for this story though. There are just too many interesting paths to take in the story.

  • neetyneety

So many of these “at least they’re not going with P4 again” comments… Isn’t anyone else just excited for a manga of one of the best games to grace the DS?

EDIT: lol, should have scrolled down first. Well, anyway, glad that some people are actually looking forward to this.

  • BTW, anyone seen any scans of how this manga looks?  I have googled devil survivor manga, but I am pretty sure what I am seeing are doujinshis.  At least, I hope they are.

    • A month late but here ya go (its in chinese)–>

      • Thanks much my friend!  It was even more awesome, since I wasn’t expecting an answer after all this time.  Thank you thank you!

      • But, oh my gosh….that looks awful.  Man, they should have had Suzuhito draw this.  Oh well, I am still very interested in it, even though a US release is probably not very likely.  Guess that is one more motivation for me to keep working on my Japanese.

  • Maia Kasoya

You don’t know how happy I was when I learned of this.
I hope the protagonist gets a badass name, like the Persona protagonists did.

  • Oh yay! I’m so glad a game that’s not Persona 4 is getting some attention. xD I love P4, seriously I do, but man, let’s give it a rest. >.>

Regarding the manga, I’m super happy! Devil Survivor was a really good game, and it definitely deserves more. I wonder what they named the hero… I would really like to have an “official” name for him, lol. And I hope they do Atsuro’s path. He was my absolute favorite character, and I think he had one of the best endings. :3

  • Nickienator

    His name should’ve been Abel.
