In Resident Evil 6, Ada Wong Works For "Neo-Umbrella"

By Ishaan . June 4, 2012 . 12:36pm

Wesker may be dead and gone, but Umbrella apparently aren’t. A new trailer for Resident Evil 6 not only gives a better look at Leon and his new partner, Helena, but also Sherry Birkin, Jake Muller, and Ada Wong, who’s seen speaking to someone who seems to be affiliated with an organization calling itself “Neo-Umbrella”. Watch the trailer below:

Resident Evil 6 will be released on October 2nd for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. A PC release will follow at a later date.

    Dat short hair.

Ada actually manages to look even hotter.

I’m tired of these motha f*in zombies on this motha f*in plane

  • And Capcom continues to be fail.

Still not touching this game unless Capcom adds Jill and Claire as major and playable characters. Capcom is touting this as the biggest game of a Resident Evil anniversary, yet they’re purposely excluding the two most important female characters of the entire series and focusing only on the old male protagonists. That’s treatment I refuse to accept, and given how Jill and Claire as well as female characters in general were treated in RE5 and RE:Degeneration, I still come away from all this thinking the current Resident Evil team is sexist.

Even this game implies it; all the female characters are mere support for the male character leads, with the sole exception of Ada, who’s only allowed to be outside that dynamic because she’s a villain the men will get to kill or otherwise subdue. Though more likely, there will be a male villain character revealed later that Ada spends the whole game serving under.

    • So the female HAS to be the lead character. SEXIST!

      • More like the female characters have to be treated as equals to the male characters.

RE6 could’ve paired Leon with Claire and Chris with Jill, and called their campaigns as such to note they’re equals in their respective campaigns (as opposed to just the “Leon campaign” or the “Chris campaign” and leaving their names off). Alternately, RE6 could’ve had Jill and Claire have their own campaign, whether as partners or separately. The Resident Evil team deliberately chose to make Chris, Leon and Wesker Jr as the “main” characters of all three campaigns while completely excluding Jill and Claire AND making the characters that tag along with those three into mere support.

I suspect the only reason Chris has a male partner instead of a female one is because if all three men had female partners, this problem with how the current team sees and treats female characters would be even more glaring. “See, we gave one of the men a male partner instead of a female one! We can’t be sexist if one of the campaigns has a man acting as support for another man!” Though I’d argue that just makes the sexism even more obvious, since instead of providing a female protagonist with a male supporting character as counterbalance, Capcom’s “solution” is to have one less woman in the game.

though I understand your points believe me I do.
I do think that you’re going to a bit of an extreme.

you seem to be thinking that there is some underlying message beneath everything even when there is none.

there is no male dominance or female subversion into the game.

I totally love the characters Claire and Jill. they had their games and they have their stories. and believe me, what I would kill for a game with Claire as a main character again.

don’t look for something that isn’t there.
sometimes there really isn’t something between the lines.

don’t think that just because the heroes are guys it’s immediately a sexist game with sexist people in sexist mindset. you presuming negative biases to people and I believe that is unfair. all people should be treated fairly. I understand you concerns, but your case does not fit unto this situation.

          • rebecasunao

It may not be sexist, but she/he has a point: most games have male main characters and/or tell men’s stories.

          • I’d continue with a discussion with you, but since my original comments have been effectively censored by someone abusing the flag function, I see no point. I’m right, someone out there that can’t defend their own stance had to censor my stance with an abuse of the flag function, those comments likely aren’t going to be brought back for viewing by a mod (no offense to the mods, just going by how they’ve always been left as flagged in the past), etc.

No point in even entertaining the idea of me potentially being wrong if someone out there is this terrified over me being right.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Flags are one thing we are going to try and be a bit more active about. Please remember that when it specifically says flagged for review, that is an automatic thing and not done by a mod.

While I see nothing against site rules regards your underlying arguments, continually commenting on the flagging does. I will do the best to keep up, but as you note, flags have become more popular lately than likes.

          • I see… in that case, sorry for my hasty statements and a bit of overreaction on my part with my last couple comments in this article. And thank you for taking care of this case and for planning to keep on top of faulty flags as best you can (I do realize that given there will be a lot of comments, it may be hard to keep up with them all). :)

        • …or maybe the developers are gay. HOMOPHOBE!

          • rebecasunao

You should try to make a point instead of just poking fun.

          • The point is implicit.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Slurs are unacceptable in any manner, please refrain from them in the future.

      • Neat, someone is abusing the flag function yet again. Not necessarily the person I’m replying to to be able to post this comment, but someone out there nonetheless.

So I’m going to interpret my being flagged as proof that I’m right. Capcom’s treatment of the female characters in comparison to the men, making the women serve as mere support or as villains, and outright excluding Jill and Claire from the most important anniversary game despite their high importance to the series, are all proof that Capcom is sexist.

Also that whoever flagged my comments can’t refute my claim in any way whatsoever, so being the desperate fanboy they are, flagged it so they could censor that point from being seen by anyone. Typical sort of thing to do when a person can’t actually refute a point but is afraid of other people seeing it.

Edit: Also, I had at least 10 Likes from other users for my original comment before the flag abuser came into play. Making that clear for posterity sake, since it’s a good gauge of other people feeling the same way in one thing or another I said in that comment.

        • Recettear is a sexist game because there is a female lead and she makes men risk their lives in dungeons full of monsters so she can loot items for her shop without giving anything to them.
Skull Girls is a sexist game because there are no men whatsoever.
Assassins Creed III: Liberation is a sexist game because they put a female lead instead of Ezio.
I can go on all night…
I don’t know why they didn’t include Jill and Clare in the game. I also don’t know why they didn’t include Barry, Carlos, Billy, Rebecca, etc. But I think it’s irrelevant, if the story they want to tell only includes the characters they chose, so be it, as long as the game is fun (in the end, that’s what really matters).
          I was joking btw.

      • M’iau M’iaut

Know this has become a hot button topic here lately, but please do (now that it is back up) take the time to review Salarta’s post. Having them as major and playable characters in a game with multiple playable characters, does not require them to be the central focused character.

        • I know what she meant, I was implying that it’s irrelevant whether the main character is a boy, a girl or a monster.

  • Solomon_Kano

This is looking great. The demo from MS’ conference was pretty sweet.

  • Complete Global Saturation?

  • Zertan

    Looks at first Pic.

    Hey, Ada found the Tesseract!
    I mean Pandora’s box!

Yeah I’m just messing around, but.

Why does Neo-Umbrella communicate thought cubes?
I bet it’s troublesome trying to keep that inside one’s pocket.

  • konsama

    Dat Ada…

The game looks great, it’s a shame it looks there’s nowhere to see Jill and Claire, considering this game looks like a real biological apocalypse it would be fitting to see EVERY important character that survived so far, Rebecca chambers, Barry, etc… But that’s just me dreaming.

    • Yeah, the big problem with this game is Capcom set it up as their “main anniversary game,” and set up a huge event that you would realistically expect everyone from the past might become involved… and yet they decided to completely exclude even Jill and Claire for no good reason. They pretty much wasted a golden opportunity, and something very appropriate for such an anniversary game, because they want to fawn over Chris and Leon almost exclusively.

The team doesn’t seem to really care either, given they screwed up the ending to RE5 pretty bad and yet they refuse to redo it or even just “add on” to it to make the ending feel more complete and proper.

If I had to choose just one thing the Resident Evil team, or even Capcom as a whole, needs to learn from Bioware, it’s genuinely listening to fan feedback.

      • konsama

Girls DLC will be sure to come out later. You should know Capcom by now or expect that by now.

Well for anniversary thing i would have loved way more to see Resident Evil outbreak and File 2 for 360/PS3 with XBL/PSN online mode, that would have been the best thing in ages.

  • CrimsonalCore

Ada looks quite sexy there~ And if there’s a new symbol of Neo-Umbrella, I’d like to see it. owo

  • Ada wong working for Neo-Umbrella:( no she should work and help Leon :(

  • Jonathan Keycross

I like the way how many characters work “together” in the same plot, putting aside the “X character should´ve been in this game instead of Y”.

It´s funny how the bad guys are so focused in using bio-weapons for everything, even hijacking a plane when a bomb in the cockpit would´ve been a better idea. Then again I guess the idea is to demonstrate the terror of such weapons, but still…

Also, all the information given regarding the plot makes me doubt more and more that this game is a prequel instead of a sequel.

  • AzureNova

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees! Wow, this one just looks so damn good! And it’s coming out in my birthday month too =^_^=

  • SirRichard

You know what? Fine. The series has been covertly taking the piss since 4, I don’t see why it should stop being silly now.

  • venomryu

that it i have had it with thees mother f## zombies on this mother f### plane

HOLY… I’M SPEECHLESS!! This trailer gave me goosebumps… yes, I’m serious.

  • M’iau M’iaut

Not quite sure where you see whining in a post supportive of the title. Please remember the rules.

    • Rohan Viajar

hmm.. though I see that Adam is subjected to #4/#5 because everybody does have the right to not like a game. and Adam was not open enough to merely accept another’s idea.

you (m’iau) are wrong in the fact that Sir Richard was not supportive of the title as you claim his comment to be (though he doesn’t have to be) but his comment is rather a mere saying of  “this sucks” in plain terms. that would be breaking rule #4/#5 because one it is a “snarky” comment. second by his comment, he is indirectly mocking those that like the game.

(side note: their opinions are their own and I am not trying to bash them. I am merely pointing out that you are defending one person and attacking another who both can be seen at fault)

I’m sorry if this was presented harshly. I was just trying to produce constructive criticism by saying that you should look into both sides before making a judgement. If by chance I am wrong then feel free to disagree with me. This is the only statement I will say pertaining to this issue.

      • M’iau M’iaut

As I read the original post, it states that while Neo (New)-Umbrella may seem a name lacking creativity, the aura of the series is not what it was prior to 4. Richard is accepting of these changes to the point that ‘silly’ things won’t keep him from enjoying the title.

Snark for the sake of being mean is what we don’t want to see happen here. Poking thoughtful fun at a title or oneself is not such a bad thing.

      • SirRichard

@twitter-18438021:disqus & @facebook-523617958:disqus You don’t get UK vernacular at all, do you? To take the piss isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s to joke around and have fun. I like the series, I like the game, don’t go putting words in my mouth. And “Stop your whining”? Seriously?

I don’t see how it’s mocking the series and its fans either, do you honestly think squeaky voiced midget Napoleon or “Your right hand comes off?” were meant to be taken seriously?

        • Rohan Viajar

ahh I see. as to my last statement, sorry that I was wrong.

        • Shows us that we shouldn’t use any UK vernacular in a site populated by Americans and others.

        • M’iau M’iaut

I catch @kaishou:disqus and other of my UK twitter friends in the reverse all the time. Keep the vernaculars please; we can deal with minor misunderstandings, and it really does bring the community together.

One does not slip into such phrasings unless they are comfortable doing so.

So, “organization” is Neo-Umbrella eh? Let’s see how Ada backstab them this time.

  • Juuu

Very Hollywood, very cinematic. I feel like this has some similarities to Asura’s Wrath, if anything, given how much “watching” we seem to be doing, for lack of a better word. It looks good, because there’s apparently gameplay to go along with it…However, I worry a little bit about the abundance of characters and POVs we seem to have to play from. I worry the plot will jump too much and be too tough to follow. However, the opposite is always possible-it could tie up a LOT of loose ends.

All in all, if that IS the route they’re taking, I’d like to see Claire, at least, possibly Jill too back for an out-and-out grand finale that brings the series closure. Capcom appears to be putting EVERYTHING into this sequel, and if that’s the case, I’d like the series to end on such a note. We can have spinoffs and sequels forever, but the fanbase only appears to be more divided as that goes on. So, if Capcom is REALLY doing what they appear to be doing in terms of creating a “blockbuster” of a game that seeks to have a huge climax, do it and tie it all up for good. Release some DLC episodes so we can see what happens to EVERYBODY [Actual, well thought out ones. The RE5 DLC was pretty good, and as such, I can get behind it] and make them affordable and able to be stand-alones, sort of like Infamous: Festival of Blood, and give the series fans what they want and what they deserve. I’d rather it end like that then the series quietly fade away into obscurity or live on as a literal zombie that isn’t sure what it wants to do and nobody wants anything to do with. o:

The plane scene in the dark could be REALLY terrifying if done right, btw. C’mon, Capcom, don’t let us down.

  • AnimusVox

    Ada looks good <3

  • enorka miho

I was still very hype for it.. Very action packed indeed… The drama looks awesome! And again I will still buy the game.. Just that I cant help but feeling disappointed when the weapons get too powerful and I do not have my R1+L1 or O+X QTE… the thumb-stick QTE trigger is just.. too… lame.. sigh..  What is seen cannot be unseen.. :(

  • I just pooped my pants a little this is so incredible

  • ZBaksh386

neo-umbrella is a stupid title but i’m so excited.

  • Setsuryuu

Haha, “Neo-Umbrella”? Serious? Man, I’ve been away for too long. xD But that trailer looks good! REALLY good! Specially the part concerning to Ada! xD (is she a proper villain now then?). Hmmm, for some reason that seemed more story-heavy than a regular RE too, I like that.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

I miss Ada’s sexy red dress. A tear shall be shed. ='(

In other news: Resident Evil 6: A Michael Bay film. I guess “survival action” is here to stay. Even Dead Space 3 is heading in that direction. =/

  • Did I hear Ali Hillis there?? I hope so, she is awesome!!!

As a person who started with Resident Evil 4, I don’t mind action at all but I dislike the Las Plagas and Majini because they’re plain ugly, I know zombies are ugly too but they look better to me. I’m really happy because Leon’s in this game being my favorite character along with Ada. Speaking of her I hope she won’t die in this game and was actually a good person >.<

It'll be awesome if in Resident Evil or non-numbered title we get to play her, Jill and Claire.

Anyways, I'm really excited for this game. I hope the game is big and had a long playtime, 15 hours would be cool.

  • ProfoundBadness

Great. Now Resident Evil has just turned into another cover-based, cinematic heavy third person shooter with an emphasis on total action rather than trying to scare or unnerve the player. They shouldn’t have kept developing these games without Mikami. After 4, it’s going further and further downhill. Worse still is that the major gaming population will no doubt buy into the hype of explosions, jump cuts and cutscenes/QTEs rather than thinking about how this is just turning into a generic title with the Resident Evil name.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Downhill? Most of the comments say otherwise. Its hyped because its turning out for the most part to be a good game RE wasn’t even scarey in the first place and in turns of plot it lowers the so called ‘scare factor’ because every knows about the virus this would have happen to the game anyway due to the plot alone.

      • ProfoundBadness

RE wasn’t scary? So I was just imagining it when even taking out a few zombies in a corridor could make me panic? Or when the swarm of infected villagers crowding the house in RE 4 had my heart pumping? This game seems to entirely deal away with what made 1-4 great, the fact that you always feel threatened. It seems to follow the RE 5 philosophy of ‘we’ll line ’em up, you just take ’em down’. Evidenced by the fact you also get into straight up fire fights. You can say the plot was leading to this, but there’s no reason to abandon the core feeling of the first 4 games. Call it a good game if you like, but just wait, it’s gonna turn out to be the same kind of cover-based third person shooter with an obnoxious amount of QTEs. I guarantee it.

  • Göran Isacson

    Neo Umbrella.

That any organization would even ironically name itself that after all that Umbrella’s done is just… wow. And that goatee-villain. THAT GOATEE-VILLAIN. I don’t think it’s possible to get more unambiguously evil if he spent every scene killing a newborn baby animal. In the first scene, he’s just casually strangling a kitten. In the second scene he’s in, he’s kicking a puppy. In the third he’s setting fire to newborn turtle batch, and yet everyone around him goes “Oh Leon don’t be ridiculous he’s a man in a high position, he CAN’T be a bad person!”.

Ah well. Big dumb blockbuster is big and dumb and will probably move millions. I never cared enough about Resident Evil to fight it’s growing ludicrousness, but to those who do… you have my condolences, and my respect. You may just be screaming into the empty night, but you will be remembered for at least making your voices heard.

  • Rei Fal’Cie Sanchez

Considering Claire’s last game was RECVX and that was 12 years ago and Jill’s RE3 (13 years ago) I just can’t understand why Capcom keeps introducing new female characters instead of re-using the stablished and loved previous female protagonists… Claire is my favorite RE female character and i’ve been waiting 12 years for Capcom to give her another game. I’m talking numbered series here because frankly the rest is passable at best.
