New Super Mario Bros. 2 Trailer Is Golden

By Ishaan . June 5, 2012 . 11:42am

New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo 3DS is littered with gold coins. These coins are left behind by enemies, rain down from overhead pipes, and special gold pipes transport you into coin-filled caverns, too. With this new focus on gold coins, the game will record all the coins you collect throughout.

Additionally, gold rings turn enemies into special golden variants and a Gold Flower item gives you the ability to turn anything in your path into gold coins. Nintendo also confirmed the return of the Tanooki suit for this game.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be released on August 19th in North America. You can view a trailer for the game above.

  • Does this not make the game even easier? You could have close to infinite lives by the 3rd world. As if the “New” mario series wasn’t easy enough.

    • Lives haven’t mattered in Mario for some time, it’s more of a nostalgia thing now.

    • Suicunesol

Maybe they’ll make the game harder because you’ll have more lives to expend. Who knows. Maybe you have to use the coins to buy stuff. Who knows? Maybe you lose coins as quickly as you gain them? We don’t know enough yet, but I think the massive number of coins isn’t there to make it easier. There’s something else.

    • Exkaiser

You could have over a hundred lives by world 3-1 in SMB, too.

  • Anime10121

Somebody at Nintendo LOVES coins!  Looks like 99 1ups by level 2 at that rate.

  • Mario: -throws coins everywhere- I make it rain, I make it rain on them h**s.

  • Code

    You know who loves coins too? Wario. I would have been far more impressed if this was New Super Wario Land trailer >wA<;

  • Why isn’t Nintendo calling this Mario 4? Making an entirely new game and calling it New [insert old version of mario] is just stupid.

I don’t know, I was really looking forward to New Super Mario Bros. 2, but this whole coins approach has honestly swiped some of that away. I mean, the concept is interesting, yes, but when it’s the whole focus of the game, it’s a bit overwhelming.

I feel like it wouldn’t be very fun when I’m trying to play through a level, stomping on enemies, and I have to collect this huge amount of coins, again, and again.

It would feel like somewhat of a chore, and I wouldn’t want that. I think it would have been best if this were the highlight of a mode that you unlock after beating all the worlds, or collecting star coins, maybe even a world. I don’t know if I’ll enjoy it after a while.

Regardless, I’m not counting it out out, and I’m still looking forward to it, but I’m a bit cautious, I suppose.

Same here. Unless that I can trade X number of coins for nintendo coins then I don’t see the point. Anyway, I’ll probably will end to buy the game

  • Mario is so cash.

  • ipatz

I’m sick of flag poles. Why doesn’t Miyamoto try to be creative & original again?

    • Herok ♞

He is no longer in charge of Mario.

  • hawk222

Wait, I thought this said “Mario Bros.,” not “Wario Bros.”

  • Göran Isacson

I wonder if coins still give lives, or if they will take that away and just make this game about collecting coins for other purposes than extra lives. At any rate, Marios newfound Midas-hunger sure won’t make Wario stop shelling out cheap games in order to outcompete his nemesis in riches anytime soon… man, when did MARIO become the symbol of greed instead of Wario…

It looks like 100 coins = 1 up still applies to this game from what I can see in the trailer. Sort of wish that would lead to some real nasty levels, but I’m not too hopeful. :( The challenge mode does sound nice though. Although I agree with Code up above. This would have worked so much better if it were a Wario game. I love Wario too. I want to see more of him.

  • boundries_san

The concept for this game looks really fun.^^

However I hope this wont cause the game to be too easy.

And while this is maybe a stupid dream, wario as villain this time?

  • s07195

    O-oh dear me!
    *gets crushed by falling coins*
