Wii U Will Support Two Wii U GamePads At Once [Update]

At E3 last year, there was some concern regarding whether Nintendo’s Wii U console would support more than one of the system’s tablet-style GamePads at once.

Today, at their E3 media briefing, Nintendo confirmed that it will, but that during E3, they will focus on single GamePad games. Additionally, connecting two GamePads will cause the framerate to half from 60fps to 30fps.

Apparently the framerate will be halved to 30 when two pads are connected. I guess their bandwidth is already saturated enough.

Oh well, at least it’s a way to do multiplayer.

    • That’s a bummer.

Kinda sucks, but we can live with that.

However the Wii U goes up to 5 players so 5 players can’t all use the Wii U GamePad? Only 2 Wii U GamePads per console, not 5?

      • malek86

        Yeah, I guess so.

This also means they’ll sell the gamepad separately… I wonder how much it will cost.

        • Christopher Nunes

Hopefully not too expensive, but I believe we’re going to get one when we buy the console.

Though in the Rayman Legends trailer, weren’t there three guys using the Wii U GamePad for the game? I could be wrong.

          • malek86

Nope, it was in fact just one guy. The others were using Pro pads.

          • Christopher Nunes

            I see.

What, the gamepads don’t have their own compute hardware?  Colour me all sorts of surprised.  I figured they were just being obstinate rather than making awful hardware design decisions…

  • Well I like that there is multiple pads however… wow cutting FPS? That sucks. Other than that that is cool.

What games will run at 60 fps anyway?

  • eilegz

very bad news… if they cant handle this i have doubts of UE4 rumor for the wiiU,sigh its gonna be dated experience that the difference between xbox360 and ps3 vs wiiu its minimal =/

  • I am okay with locked 30fps, only time I complain is constant framerate problems.
Is this only for local since it is two contrablets on one console?  I imagine people care more for online.
