New Super Mario Bros. 2 Has Full Co-Op, But No Online

By Ishaan . June 7, 2012 . 9:45am

New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the Nintendo 3DS will have full co-op multiplayer, but it won’t be online, Nintendo have revealed. The game will feature Mario and Luigi, and you’ll be able to play through the entire game with a friend if you like.

If you’re playing cooperatively, the game will restrict both players’ movements so they’re both visible on the screen at the same time. The camera will be tied to whichever player is out in front, and the other player will need to keep up.

Nintendo also detailed a new mode—Coin Rush, where you only have a single life, and need to collect as many coins as possible across three levels. Coin Rush stages are the same stages as the game’s regular mode, but there are changes such as 1-UP mushrooms being changed to 50 coins. Coin Rush also lets you share scores with friends via StreetPass.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be released on August 19th.

  • Well, darn. Most of my friends who would be interested in playing this with me live in another city. Oh well, not like not being able to play a Mario game in coop is a big deal.

I still don’t get this, why not just put in online multiplayer…

      Because it is Nintendo?^^

Ah~ I was honestly hoping that it would feature online co-op because I’m not really fond of the coin focus in New Super Mario Bros. 2. I just can’t see it being very fun running around back and forth collecting this huge amount of coins, it feels like a chore, almost.

Though, I thought this whole coin focus in co-op would actually be really fun, trying to collect the most in the group, and it wouldn’t be so overwhelming.

I’m really disappointed that it isn’t online, because it would be fun playing with your 3DS friends, and it’d be convenient, too, to team up virtually at any time with people world wide.

Regardless, I’m still interested, but just not as much, really.

Well if u read their interview on IGN, it seems there will be a coin rush mode where u and ur friend will need to collect 1 MILLION coins with only one life lol.^^

I believe that mode looks very interesting here lol.

That pretty much summed up all my thoughts, thank you.

I’m sure they considered it, but ran into massive latency problems that would be harder to disguise than in say Resident Evil: Revelaitons.

Well easy getting lives up like in Super Mario 3Dland and collecting conis like crazy.
but I’m still a mario fan.

No online = co-op never being used, at least not for me. But that’s fine, I mean COME ON – it’s Mario.

  • I’m just wondering if you need 2 carts to play multiplayer or if you can do it with one cart.

  • boundries_san

Ohh man, screen being restricted is going to be a hell of problem if i played with little sister here lol.^^

She will play slowly while collecting all coins one by one here lol while keep causing me dead as i can’t move forward.^^

A shame there is no online co-op, but all well. I guess that’s another thing that distinguishes NSMB.2 from NSMB.U . That and I agree that there probably was too much lag (I can imagine if the game forces you to stay in the same area as the person playing across the sea). I guess I’m not really disappointed because I’m not much of a multiplayer kind of person. I do play MP from time to time, but I mostly stick to single player.
