The Last Blade From SNK Cuts To Wii Virtual Console

By Ishaan . June 7, 2012 . 9:15am

After taking a long sabbatical, the Wii Virtual Console appears have returned to work these past few weeks. This week saw the release of another Virtual Console title: The Last Blade, an SNK fighting game for the Neo Geo. Similar to Samurai Shodown, you fight using weapons, but The Last Blade lets you select “Power” or “Speed” styles for every fighter. The game costs 900 Wii Points ($9).

Meanwhile, on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console, we get Prince of Persia for the Game Boy Color. This game costs $5.

On the Nintendo eShop front, there’s one new game and one demo—Shin’en’s Art of Balance Touch for $7, and a free demo for Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes.

Finally, DSiWare sees two new releases this week as well—Cat Frenzy and Curling Super Championship. You can read about those here and here.

AWESOME I NEVER PLAYED last blade before

  • The Last Blade is such a great fighting game. Well, from a fun standpoint at least. I used to play it daily as a kid on my Neo Geo Pocket Color (as one of the five people in the world who owned one, apparently). It’d be pretty awesome if they did a port to the 3DS eshop, but that’s probably hoping for way too much.

Last Blade is fantastic. Hope the second game also makes it to the VC.

cool, was wondering if last blade was ever going to come to the us on either VC or PSN

Pretty much my favorite weapon based 2-D fighter. Daisuke Ishiwatari of Guilty Gear fame worked on this early in his career, and rumor has it he did such a good job he was trusted to direct the GG series afterward. Check it out if you wanna see the guy’s roots.

  • Maybe i should get a Wii (of course i would, just poor) because i think SNK forgot about their Neo Geo Station on Psn which makes me sad when i see one of my favorite fighters and i can’t play it 3;

  • The bloody fights reminds me of Guilty Gear

Actually, Part of the ”neo blood team”  that developed last blade later went to arc system works to create the first guilty gear
      (including daisuke)

Echoing all the other comments, this is a GREAT game.  Perhaps my favorite Neo Geo fighter, and as a real Neo fighting game fanatic I don’t say that lightly.  It’s up there with the best of the system – Garou, KoF’98, etc.  And even though the sequel is good, I like LB1 better – particularly the mood of all the amazing backgrounds, and the speed/power system just feels a little more satisfying in LB1 for some reason.

I’ll be buying this again in a third format, already have the Neo cart and the Japanese PS2 Last Blade collection.  But I like the convenience of having it on the TV that my Wii is hooked up to, and the Wii VC ports are pretty spot on.

Hey SNK, port this thing to PS3/PSP Neo Geo Station and I’ll buy it yet again.

    Not The Last Blade 2?
Oh well, still a great game.

Is this for US only? Because oh man, would I ever like me to play some Last Blade. One of the coolest games that old arcade had ever housed, I tell ya.

VC is going to have a lot of love here.^^
