By Ishaan . June 22, 2012 . 9:00am

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers on the Nintendo 3DS has one major upgrade over the old Sega Saturn version of the game—full voice-acting. New footage of the game demonstrates this, exploration of two different dungeons, and some story sequences as well. Take a look at it below:

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers will be released for the Nintendo 3DS on August 30th.

I heard Hasegawa from Gintama in the first video~

  • KuroiKen

    Wow, the voices sound great.
Well, everything’s fine with me, no regrets about pre-ordering it.

  • malek86

I see they have greatly increased the battle speed. That’s not bad. In the original game they were very slow. Although, they do seem a bit too fast here.

Why not remake the game with 3D enemies since this is on a 3DS? Take advantage of the systems design points..Otherwise why not just PSP then…

    • cj_iwakura

The game already had nifty 3D effects on the Saturn. The spells come at the player. It’s a very cool effect.

If they use the 3DS appropriately, it’ll look great.

      • Joseph Santee

Oh yeah, I forgot about that little detail with the battle animations! :D The possibilities make me VERY VERY EXCITED.

  • SetzerGabbiani

I would have liked at least a bit more optimization of the dungeons for the 3DS, and the animated sprites of Strange Journey since it looks like they are using enemy art from that game, but whatever.  Buying this anyway if/when it gets a localization.

My gut tells me this was probably meant for the original DS.

    • cj_iwakura

Soul Hackers does have animated sprites. And you’re mixed up, Strange Journey took the art from Soul Hackers. SH came way before SJ.

      • Barrylocke89

I do see what he means though. SJ looks made for the DS, while the port-i-ness of Soul Hackers seems to be pretty apparent.

Mind you, I don’t care too much. Its new for the west, and apparently one of the best Megaten games that’s yet to have a localization or patch made for it.

      • SetzerGabbiani

I was never mixed up about the timeline of the games; I’m aware of SH’s age. However, SJ uses animated versions of SH’s sprite-work (swinging back and forth and up and down do not count). I’m saying that the game could have used SJ’s updated assets for this port. They updated the UI, so why not go the distance and make some other cosmetic improvements for superior tech?

  • MrRobbyM

It looks like a straight up port of a DS version. Just pointing it out.

    • Adrián Alucard

       its a saturn/psx port

      • MrRobbyM

I got that, it just looks like it could of been a DS game.

        • cj_iwakura

The dungeons in this game are some of the nicest R&D1 have ever done.

        • Nah, DS won’t be able to fit Soul Hackers, the PSx version was 2 CD big and the 3DS version is basically PSX version with added stuff.

  • Roberto Armando Iraheta

I think I’m ready for another good FP dungeon crawl.

  •  Everything looks as awesome as it should, I’m super ready for this!

  • Lol Cigar smoking sunglass dude appear out of nowhere!
1st person dungeon crawling…..Well maybe a change is oky once a while…. (got used to Persona and DeSu style) I was expecting a good battle background instead of a mist….But otherwise it play lk DeSu. So I tk tht u can bring six members/demons w/h you?

    •  Yeah pretty much that’s how it was in the old games, you would have a six party team, it be all “Wizardry” and yeah.  You should try Strange Journey to get used to it (and also being a pretty good game)

  • revenent hell

I could kinda care less about any 3d effect,I normally dont care for gimmicky stuff like that anyways….so can we just get an announcment about it being localised please? I just want this game with every fiber in meh soul,or whats left of it.

  • darkfox1

And of course this game looks like it’s gonna have godlike battle music and such as with most if not every Megaten game. :DDDDD Hope they localize this and SMT IV. May not be related but I want Project X Zone as well. Aghhhhhh let’s see what the future brings. this is a remix of Soul Hacker’s normal battle theme, done by the doujin group Hellion Sounds. It’s such a badass remix!

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

    Atlus, please localize this!

  • Joseph Santee

    The voice acting is EXCELLENTE!

    My god, I can’t wait.

  • So I recently got to Strange Journey’s final boss (though I’ve yet to beat it), I bought Devil Survivor 2, which is every bit as awesome as its prequel, I’m planning on buying all Persona games on my Vita when I get the money (I never owned a Sony system before, see), and now there’s Soul Hackers and SMT IV coming for the 3DS.

And Etrian Odyssey IV is looking absolutely gorgeous as well.

Atlus… Buying your games is such a hassle. I should arrange it so that all my pocket money goes to you automatically, because if it’s going to you anyway, I might as well save time that’s better spent playing the wonderful games you just /keep on giving/ to us gamers. <3

Edit: I figured I might as well say something useful, so I'll ask if someone knows what the difference between Yen and Macca is in this game. I've never seen Yen get used in any SMT games (though I've really only played three of them), and you can see how much money you have during battles as well. Is it that important? Can you buy temporary upgrades or something during battles?

Is Yen the money, and Macca the energy in this game? I'm quite curious, really.

Also, I can't be the only one who thought the blue part of the party members' HP bars was their MP. ^^; Confused me to no end when I saw their MP drop to 0, while nothing was deducted from the bar itself. I hope the game will surprise me when I'm playing it, as well – though with this being an SMT game, I have no doubts it will.

    • revenent hell

Yen has been used in some SMT games but I think it becomes nill when “the demon world” takes over for one example. Macca is typically demon money I want to say so im thinking for this game Yen may be the “outside world money” and Macca might be used inside the “computer  world” But this is just a theory of mine since ive never played the game befor. It might even be whats used to recruit demons in the game?
