New Super Mario Bros. 2 Lets You Collect 1 Million Coins

By Ishaan . June 22, 2012 . 12:01pm

New Super Mario Bros. 2 emphasizes collecting coins. There are different ways to increase the number of coins you gather as you run through a stage, including a gold ring that converts all enemies to gold, which yield gold upon defeat. Another item, the gold block makes gold coins pop out of Mario’s head.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 also has a Coin Rush mode, which we’ve reported on before. In Coin Rush, you play three randomly selected stages and try to collect as many coins as you can. The game keeps track of all the coins you collect across all its modes, and Nintendo say that you can hit the million mark if you play well enough.

As previously reported, New Super Mario Bros. 2 will have local co-op multiplayer across the entire game and DLC in the form of extra Coin Rush stages. It’s scheduled for release on August 19th in the U.S. and you can read our hands-on impressions here.

I hope I can find someone to play Co-op with.

    Challenge accepted, good sir!

  • Collect a million coins, unlock Wario!
Or maybe not, Nintendo doesn’t like unlockable characters in this series. T__T

    • Well Luigi was unlockable in the first New Super Mario Bros. (Not REALLY unlockable though since you could get him before you even beat the game with gamefaqs)

  • In before a flood of Tak Fuji jokes

    • I was very tempted, actually…

I’m still a bit disappointed that there wont be any online multiplayer, something I was actually expecting Nintendo to implement this time around. Unless I happen to run into a fellow Japanese 3DS companion by chance, I’ll be locked out of local co-op, so that’s really unfortunate.

That said, I’m starting to pick up a bit of excitement for New Super Mario Bros., and this Coin Rush is exactly what I had in mind, a separate mode that emphasized on coins, not the whole game itself.

Regardless, it still looks fun, and I’m sure a lot of people will enjoy and have fun with this mode! (◕‿◕✿)

they really should have added online,4 player’s   and you could play as your mii’s

Perhaps it’s just me, but while watching the trailer I thought that there was an emphasis on coins in both the normal game and coin rush, just that coin rush kept track of your total coins and whatnot.

I’m fervently hoping that’s not true, though.

Ah, yes, the whole game emphasizes on coins, not just Coin Rush. Sorry for the confusion, I meant that I would have preferred if the emphasis on coins was a separate mode, like Coin Rush, for example, rather than being the premise of the whole game. I’m not exactly fond of the coins approach in New Super Mario Bros. 2.

Sorry wasnt a fan of the NEW super Mario games but, the Wii-U one looks epic

I swear, every time I think of this game & the fact it’s all about collecting gold coins, I think of this song:

Also, *does Dr. Evil finger gesture* One MILLLIIIOOON Coins.
