Dead or Alive 5 Collector’s Edition Looks Like This

By Ishaan . July 3, 2012 . 8:30am

Dead or Alive 5 will have a GameStop-exclusive collector’s edition, which will come with a hardcover art book, swimsuit costumes for every female character in the game, a poster, and a soundtrack CD. The contents of the collector’s edition will be enclosed in an embossed steel case. Here’s what it all looks like:

Dead or Alive 5 will be released on September 25th in North America for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The Dead or Alive 5 collector’s edition will cost $80.

glad it comes with the the regular game case, not a huge fan of steel cases.

    • Repede91

Couldn’t agree more I don’t like having odd sized cases on my shelf.

But hey I already preordered the CE last week.

    • MrKappa

That was the difference between the CE or regular for me. I hate when games come in some cardboard sleeve or in the CE case and then they are glued in.

    will it come to canada?
or just R1 copy of the collector’s edition will be another US exclusive, just like Ni No Kuni?

  • Perona

    “GameStop-exclusive”
    Welp, that’s one collector’s edition I won’t be getting.

    • Anime10121

Ikr, why do so many publishers forget Amazon :(

      • OneOkami

Just like a 1st party invests in exclusives for their hardware, I’d bet Gamestop invests in these exclusives to get people to buy from them. It doesn’t really benefit a publisher to limit the availability of the products unless they were being compensated for it.

        • Anime10121

Probably true, but sadly, I just love Amazon for so many reasons (no tax, release date delivery, price matches, low price guarantees, etc etc) and I could go on and on about why I love them, but I wont.  I’m just sad to see when so many publishers opt for Gamestop as their ONLY CE shop.

  • Cephrien

..is that seriously the box art?

    Come /on/

  • Herok♞

I like it, its simple and wont offend someone who looks at.

  • Anime10121

Wait, so that image of half of Kasumi’s face and her neck is SERIOUSLY the box art?  Ugh what the heck were they thinking, I’d much rather just have a pure black boxart with the DOA 5 logo on it.  Thats a pathetic excuse for a box art if I’ve ever seen one.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Really? Looks quite stylish in my opinion. Although I thought that was Hitomi’s face.

      • Anime10121

It’s unique, I’ll give you that, but it seems kinda lazy to slap that on a cover and call it done.  That was the first piece of art revealed when the game was announced (before the games new art style was shown) and for promotional art it did a terrific job, it gave a sense of the changes without actually showing her full face.  But as a full fledged box art for a game, that cover’s a big no no, especially if you’re trying to attract a broader audience.

As I said earlier, if you didnt know what the series was and went into a Walmart where they still lock games up in cages, most people would simply look over it because it looks to vague and shows no direction in what type of game it may be.

Oh and on the face thing, I’m just guessing its Kasumi because she’s kinda the Dead or Alive main girl.  With that new art style and Kasumi and Hitomi looking so different in the face I cant really discern which one it is either, I’m just sticking with my assumption that its Kasumi because she’s Dead or Alive’s poster child.

        • GibbRS

I have a feeling it might be a new character not revealed yet.  It doesn’t look like Kasumi to me.  It could be Hitomi, tho.

For DOA4 they had Kokoro by her self on one of the covers (perhaps the slip cover, I forget).

edit: and DOA3 had some covers with just Christie on it. If history repeats itself, this may be a new character on the DOA5 box.

          • Anime10121

All true I forgot all about the previous games and their new character reveals on the front.  According to the leaked character list, we are supposed to be getting a new chick in this game, so maybe it is her.

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

I love how it looks, definetely getting it.

  • revenent hell

well I for one like the box art,if I saw it sitting on a shelf I would probably grab it since I like simple yet pretty so it would stand out to me. I just wish they would give this to Amazon as well im not a very big fan of gamestop so I try to limit my purchases there and normally I go the Amazon rout…

    • GibbRS

Agreed.  I like this type of boxart more than what they had for DOA4, a super cluttered collage of characters.

  • http://www.geekrevolt.com/ DeShaun Zollicoffer

I like the box art, but it doesn’t do a fighting game any justice. People who never heard of the series will have no idea what genre the game belongs to without flipping over the box. The cover should have two of the characters fighting.

    • Anime10121

Exactly, it makes it even worse in places like Walmart that still has their games locked up in cages.  No one would know what the game was without prior knowledge of the series, and even then, the box art isnt really screaming Kasumi, as much as it is nose, lips, and neck the game.

      • http://www.geekrevolt.com/ DeShaun Zollicoffer

Yeah, it’s weird. It would work great with a game like Heavy Rain, but it’s terrible for a fighting game.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ty-Austin/100002154794093 Ty Austin

Games like Final Fantasy XIII had simple covers, I think companies just let the title say most of it.  Sure, FF has been around forever, but DOA has been around for quite some time too.  A simple cover can spark interest and further investigation I suppose? I definitely see where you’re coming from though.

The worst you could do would be to use an ugly cover back in the 90′s that had absolutely no relevance to the game whatsoever. They either put a macho guy with big guns, or a sexy scantly clad woman on the cover.  I missed out on Mobile Light Force for quite some time because the horrible cover completely desensitized me.

    • raymk

Yeah this I love the box art but for a fighting game…wth!  I think this is final as well so yep hopefully word of mouth can carry this game through.

    • feloniousmax

The fact that in order to see the genre you have to flip box over is an asset. Anyone that knows fighting games at least knows of the series, that person wondering what that half faced box is all about may have never played a fighting game and still decide to check it out. Think it’s one of the best covers I’ve seen on a game.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/ArPeeGeePlaythroughs Kaspian

Not quite what I was expecting.  Figured it would be an image of some of the characters or just the logo.  Not something “obviously” targeted toward nose and collar bone fetishists. :p

    • GibbRS

Collarbones are all the rage now.*

*obscure anime reference for my favorite episode of Kyou no 5 no 2

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Touche Gamestop, you win this time (Shakes First). lol

  • Tee Niitris

I’ll avoid making any witty or elaborate comment and just say I don’t like the box art.

At least you get the regular case for the CE.

    • Manny Being Manny

The Lips box art is the exact reason I’m getting the special edition. Not that I don’t like Lips, but… it just looks weird for a box art.

  • Closet_Ninja

I wonder if there will be other character covers cause that would be cool. I’d so get an Ayane or Hitomi one over Kasumi

    • KuroiKen

      Ayane brofist!

  • Nitraion

Looks like kasumi is main model this time….
I remember Tina wants to be model on DOA 2 but bass not approve Lol

  • AnimusVox

The boxart is very simplistic, but I really like it for some reason.

    • Testsubject909

In and of itself, I enjoy the simplistic look.

With the mentality that this is supposed to represent a fighting game, and supposed to represent Dead or Alive 5.

      I find it… misplaced.

  • AFatHouseCat

As a print designer I like it, I think it’s far better than most of the alternative NA covers we get. I don’t know what their previous covers have been in the States because this isn’t a fighting game I play or follow, but the fact that this cover got me to click on a game I don’t follow says it does work for some people :)

  • Jake_Indiman

Sigh….I bought the Ninja Gaiden III collector’s edition. Now I am compelled to buy this…

    • Testsubject909

Well… Think of it this way.

Do you regret having purchased Ninja Gaiden 3 collector’s edition?

  • RaikageV

Whoa, so that’ll really be the boxart?!

  • KK

Pretty weak limited edition for $80. And yet again, here we go with more costume DLC. Thanks Capc…I mean Tecmo. So $20 more and I’m getting a poster that’s probably folded up and not worth looking at but once, some DLC that’s worth like $5, an “art” book that probably features more text and character profiles than actual art, a tin box that is unconventional and doesn’t fit on a shelf with the rest of my games and a soundtrack. The soundtrack is the only worthwhile thing in this bundle. Pass.

  • http://www.facebook.com/remy.lanslots Remy Lanslots

No. I say no to a cover that shows half a face. Same happened with Tomb Raider: Underworld. This Dead or Alive 5 cover looks hideous! I really hope that the European version will have a better cover for the game…

  • TheDarkEmpress

The tin and CD look retarded…what is this…Nascar?

    • Testsubject909

I was wondering who else was completely confused by the design of the metal casing…

The actual case is par for the course, fanservice just a different form of it.

But that metal case… Just looking at it, what would that be? Bomberman 5?

  • Jiikae

I actually love the cover. It doesn’t scream “this is a fighting game” but it does scream “this looks interesting”. It’s a stylish, simplistic, clean cover. I like it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ty-Austin/100002154794093 Ty Austin

I’m a really big fan of simple covers, I really like this one.  The recent Final Fantasy XIII covers come to mind as well.

Is that picture of Kasumi the poster?  Honestly, I was really hoping that the box art would have been the poster.

  • Crimson_Cloud

The cover is full of sweat. ^^
I like the look of it, but unfortunately the international costs will be so high that I can almost buy two copies. Hope some European SE pops up but… I doubt it…

    • Izludicus

I’ve preordered it in the uk so it’s surely available in euroland.

      • Crimson_Cloud

You’re right, I just saw it on sendit.com. Preorder done!

  • Sakurazaki

I see a lot of complaints about the box art, but is that really it?

It still has “RP” on it… It could be a placeholder.

    • nothing956

If you look between the RP rating and the Team Ninja logo it says package not final.

      • Sakurazaki

Ahh, thanks for pointing that out. Reassured myself.

Hurts to see people complain when the answer is right there. Still, it could be the lips cover, but I doubt it.

  • LynxAmali

    I WANT THAT POSTER.

    Confirmed for Pre-ordering the CE.

    TO EB GAMES!

    Next Weekend.
