PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Welcomes Tekken’s Heihachi Mishima

By Ishaan . July 6, 2012 . 6:53pm

Sony have announced two more playable characters for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale—Heihachi Mishima from the Tekken series, and Sony’s own Toro Inoue, one of the two Sony mascot cats. Take a look at trailers for both characters below:

Sony say that Heihachi excels in close-range combat, while Toro can switch between close-quarters and ranged forms. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will be released on October 23rd for the PlayStation 3. The game is also headed to the PlayStation Vita.

    aha, yeah.

  • http://twitter.com/shinigamitwin kingofe3

I was hoping for Jin or Kazuya, but Heihachi is all right.

  • Muffum

As weird of a thing as this is to complain about…

The aesthetics and sound design of the actual fighting are really unsatisfying. I’m judging this game as I would the Super Smash Bros. games or Anarchy Reigns: a fun game to play with friends and mess around. In both of those games, you can really see and hear when a powerful hit connects. Here, though? The sound effects are so weak and nigh inaudible, and the attacks always seem like they’re hitting air, whether or not they connect.

    • http://twitter.com/ifarah12 Gren

and how you need finishers to kill.

I would’ve enjoyed this game more if it was just a straight up Smash clone.

      • Guest

I wouldn’t. Ringing out is cheap

    • Nemesis_Dawn

I would have just preferred good ol’ fashioned life bars.

    • British_Otaku

      Agreed.

It seems like something silly to grade a game on but even the sounds (from contact, from the character or from hitting the air) you hear as you hit, jump and such add a huge amount to the game’s atmosphere and experience.

I would hope this is just a poorly made trailer which dropped that audio as I was amped for Sonic’s Brawl debut video due largely to hearing the clatter of Sonic’s steps, the nostalgic sound of him jumping, springing or stopping aside from hitting…

It could be a great fanservice game overall but it would feel hollow if sound clips are looped too often or you can’t really “feel” a hit. I may be understanding how people can find an issue with how guns sounds in a video game or movie now.

      • Grant

Going off what I played at E3, the game is quite lack luster. The controls are very simple and most people didn’t grasp how to play. Once you get used to thing, you realize that most people bunch together, which just makes it an easy win. On my first try I went 14 : 2 with Parappa and it was quite far from satisfying.

  • Roberto Armando Iraheta

As much as I like Hei, he’s such a lame choice. Where’s Crash or Spyro?

    • Yamaneko22

Sir Daniel Fortesque demands to be in this game >_<

      • Roberto Armando Iraheta

If anyone even remembers Medievil… :’(

Take that back, you! (-`д´- 。)

In the hands of Activision :<
      Hopefully they reach a deal.

  • finalheart9323

OMG Toro I want the game now and a Toro Plushie

  • Ben Sylvia

These 2 are pretty meh for me.  Can’t wait to see who they reveal at Comic Con next week.

  • Zonic505

Neat to see Toro plays dramatically different from his SFxTK appearance. I also enjoy the fact that Heihachi can summon Kuma and a rocket that suddenly has the opponents tied up & launches them into space.

Also, wooo, Parappa stage. Please tell me Chop Chop Master Onion sings in the background while I fight.

Update: I just realized, Heihachi’s LV3 is actually a reference to his ending in Tekken 5. Now it totally makes sense.

  • DuskSharkEX

I choose Heihachi as my main.

  • Tom_Phoenix

Finally, an appropriate addition to the roster! Tekken was one of the big titles on the PlayStation, so Heihachi’s inclusion makes a whole lot of sense.

Hopefully, we will see A LOT more additions of this kind in the future.

  • Spirit Macardi

I could think of several Namco characters more deserving of a spot in this game.

Plus, all the Tekken characters have already been in no less than two crossovers recently. Quit hogging the limelight and give someone else a shot.

Sweet, now give me my precious Croc and Solid Snake and we will call it a first Day Purchase ! :D

    • ThomasTruong

Croc, now that’s a name I have not heard in a long time.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Altin-Bujupaj/1157167838 Altin Bujupaj

Looks like someone missed out Tekken 3.

  • kevinposta

    What a nice looking fangame!

  • KyoyaHibari

    o.O Heihachi…wow, caught me off guard…

  • MrRobbyM

    Nice.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q6NXXGMO5XNSMJ64NIHYHFP56A Vince

Huh? Didn’t knew Heihachi could strap other people in a rocket too and send them in outer space like he always do to his son and grandson…

  • Nemesis_Dawn

This is another game that the more I hear, the less enthused about it I am. There definitely should have been a Tekken rep, but Heihachi has been used in so many crossovers, he has no meaning anymore. At this point, I’m expecting the FF representative to be Vaan or someone lame like that.

    • Yuri Kennedy

besides STxT, what other crossover that he’s in ?

      • Guest

As MAO stated, Soul Calibur II (PS2 version), Namco x Capcom, Smash Court.

And I’m willing to bet he’ll show up in Project X Zone

  • ZEROthefirst

This game seems kind of interesting to me, but for the most part I have no intentions of actually getting it. Unless it turns out to be good or at least a decent deterant until SSB4 comes out.

  • http://twitter.com/mao2222222 MAO

Wasn’t that interested before, but now I am. Looking forward to use Toro to beat up Kratos! :D Also, I hope they add in characters from Ape Escape, Hot Shots Golf and Jumping Flash, and more third party game characters.

  • http://twitter.com/mao2222222 MAO

Soul Calibur II (PS2 version), Namco x Capcom, Smash Court. I guess they could put in Kazuya or Jin, but Heihachi is pretty much the face of Tekken, so…

Edit: Sorry, this was supposed to be a reply to Yuri Kennedy, but I don’t know how it ended up here LOL.

  • Guest

Toro & Heihachi = effort to pull in Japanese gamers interests.

All they need now is Cloud

  • Domii

Now we’re talking Sony, keep it up. As much as I like the western Sony mascots, I love the Japanese characters of playstation history much more. So keep them coming Sony.

  • SaberSaurus

    Waiting for Sephiroth =/

    • Roberto Armando Iraheta

      No. Just no.

    • kupomogli

Not my favorite Final Fantasy by far, but I think when it comes down to it, Cloud and Sephiroth are the two most memorable characters in Playstation history, and outside of the original Final Fantasy classes, the two most memorable characters in the entire series.  Not only are they in Dissidia as well as their original game, but Cloud and Sephir… Elmdor are in Final Fantasy Tactics, too.

    • Nemesis_Dawn

It would make total sense for him or Cloud to be in it.

Which is why I worry they’ll go with Vaan or one of the Cids or something.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000405678458 Franco Bär

     I’m waiting for an Atlus character… Demi-fiend maybe…

  • kupomogli

Oh yeah.  I called it.  Toro the Sony Cat.   Heihachi is a nice addition.  I was really hoping for Paul or Law though.  Just as memorable and more favored.  Bryan Fury is my favorite, so would have definitely rather had him but he’s not one of the original characters.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Mc-Devitt/100002626261475 Stephen Mc Devitt

It’s good see Heihachi in and his instant kill being a shout-out his Tekken 5 ending but the sound effects when he hits opponents sound weak and un-Tekken-like.

Let’s hope for more Sony characters like Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Captain Qwark, a Chimera from Resistance, Cole McGrath, Kevin Butler, Lightning Farron and Solid Snake (or Big Boss from Peace Walker).

Let’s hope for cutscenes as well between certain fighters like Daxter trying to hit on Lightning. “I do love a woman in uniform. Wanna bark some orders at me? Woof woof!”

    • Göran Isacson

Have to admit, you got a point with the sound-effects: they’re not sounding too impressive right now. Still, that could probably change the further the game gets in its development.

  • ivanchu77

Maining Heihachi for sure, so glad that he is the one representing the tekken side

  • Mister_Nep

I never knew Toro had a last name. Does Kuro have one as well?

    • http://twitter.com/mao2222222 MAO

Toro was adopted by the owner of Inoue Sushi restaurant, hence the last name. The owner named him “Toro” because he loves eating toro (tuna belly).

As for Kuro, he’s a stray cat so he doesn’t have a last name.

      • Mister_Nep

I see. Thank ya kindly for the info.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Heihachi huh? Don’t know here but i am hoping for others lol. Maybe like Kuma should be a better choice.

At least Toro is a nice choice there considering it is so cute.^^ Now, the problem i had is the attack contact sounds there. It sounds so fake? And i kinda kills my feeling there.T_T

    • Yamaneko22

How about Gon? He was only present in Tekken 3 and would fit well into such a game;)

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Ohh that would also be nice here.^^ However seeing Gon is promoted quite heavily for its own game on 3DS, i am not really sure that Gon is going to be a good choice there.^^

      • Grant

Gon was a manga character that appeared in Tekken 3 for whatever reason. Due to this I really couldn’t see why they would track down the rights of such a niche character.

  • Nitraion

    Yeah Toro…:3
    I call Yuri/uru and Snakeeeee!!!!!

    • http://twitter.com/mao2222222 MAO

If they add Yuri or Karin I’ll buy 2 copies!!

      • Nitraion

But before that i wanted they improve fighting animation the best animation so far is Toro lol….

  • Kitestwinblades

Now we’re going somewhere. Parappa was like one of the only things that had my attention at first but just because of who he his rather than the way he was represented. This on the other hand is pretty wicked! Toro looks like a REALLY fun character and his expression are still as silly as ever. Heihachi is character I’m very familiar with so I cant wait to see how his style transfers in this game. Pretty nice super animation too.

Sending Kratos into the space… I’m sure that’s going to be hilarious xD

  • Strain42

Not the biggest fan of Heihachi simply because in my eyes half of the fun of a fighting game like this is playing as characters who aren’t usually in fighting games. But I see he has a lot of support, so I understand why they decided to go with this.

Toro was a pretty fun announcement. I doubt I’ll main him, but watching his video here, he’ll certainly be kept on my radar.

  • Anime10121

    Bought and bought!

Though honestly I was already sold on the first trailer, a Sony Smash Bros with 1rst party and 3rd party (PS icons) characters, they couldnt go wrong (although I am disappointed that the only way to kill people are through specials but alas).

Sony already has my money through my Amazon Preorder:P

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

They are already putting in 3rd party characters to bolster their roster? Sony are you even trying?

    • Brandonmkii

Tekken was at the forefront if the early PS1 days, and for a while was Sony exclusive. I don’t see the problem with Heihachi being there.

      • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

Oh I understand that, Tekken 3 might as well have been published by Sony, but I am just kinda sick of Tekken characters being stuck where ever people cant put them.

  • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

    I approve this!

    Needs moar 3rd party characters!

  • Enigma_XIV

I really hope there’s more characters.

  • Asura

It looks like an even slower version of Brawl, although without the nearly-no-hitstun’d airdodges.

Still, just watching it play out, it looks so sluggish. I can’t see how people who worked on actual fighters are behind this, as it appears to be pure brawler.

  • Göran Isacson

Heihachi is a pretty nice draw, especially with his Tekken 5-finisher, but Toro… I dunno, he could be fun but he’s not doing anything for me. I didn’t even know this mascot existed until I saw him in Street Fighter X Tekken, so… yeah. Not the most exciting announcement to me, so I’ll be holding my thumbs for cooler things in the future.

  • eliel

cool announcement excited for Heihachi! but still w8in for Gitarooman to be announced :D

  • Keitaro004

That’s the first time I’ve seen Toro so… dangerous
