Tekken Producer Says Namco Bandai Asking For Paid DLC, But He Will Resist

By Ishaan . July 9, 2012 . 11:01am

Tekken series producer, Katsuhiro Harada, maintains that he doesn’t plan to include paid character DLC in any future Tekken games. Speaking with Eurogamer, Harada states: "I’ve been saying that, at least for Tekken, regarding techniques, characters and stages, these three things won’t be charged for, even if they are DLC."

Harada said the same thing at Namco Bandai’s Gamers Day event back in April.

While some DLC may be on the disc in order to avoid issues related to download times, Harada says it shouldn’t matter if the DLC is free. However, Harada’s bosses at Namco Bandai do ask him about paid DLC frequently, he admits. For this reason, Harada says, paid DLC will likely be offered, but only in the form of extraneous items that aren’t vital to enjoying the game, such as music from previous Tekken soundtracks or past ending movies.

Back during Gamer Day, Harada mentioned another possible DLC item—costumes. “There are some, you know, very eccentric people out there on Twitter that are asking for bikini bottoms for Lee Chaolan or something like that,” he said at that event, in reference to Tekken Tag Tournament 2 requests. “That’s a very specific request that’s not originally in our plan. We might charge money for that.”

Harada feels rather strongly about the subject of paid DLC. What if he were forced to include paid characters, however? He states: "If I was given the choice to include paid DLC or quit Namco, I would maybe quit… Or maybe I would just say: "Get someone else to deal with this’."

Hr also reveals something interesting about Namco Bandai’s work policy, when asked if he ever feels overworked like his friend, Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono, who recently suffered a collapse under his workload.

"We have a company policy called Refresh Week," Harada shares. "It’s four weeks throughout the year when we have to go home early. And I’m feeling stressed out just trying to do that! As far as vacation days go, I can only take one or two off all year. Having four weeks throughout the year where I can’t do any overtime is quite difficult."

"So I’m kind of worried I’ll be next,” Harada says, referring to Ono’s collapse.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I’d totally pay for bikini bottoms

  • Well, I won’t say no to Ling Xiaoyu’s pink dress from Tekken 4…

  • SirRichard

What can you say, really? Between this and the response to whiny fans, the man has a big pair of brass balls. In this day and age, actively saying and doing stuff like this, he’s awesome as all hell.

I haven’t played Tekken in years, I think it’s about time I started again.

  • amagidyne

Geez, this guy. This will be my first Tekken game since the third one.

  • eilegz

its nice to see that some developers and big name figure like harada stick to its own philosophy and approach and to resist publishers greedy draconian and anti consumer practice.

I will like to buy tekken tag 2

  • VenerableSage

Props to Harada. Seriously. In a world where EVERYONE seems to want to nickle-and-dime their faithful customers to make another quick buck (either via DLC or continuous sequels), it’s nice to see someone standing up and saying no.

Honestly, I’d love to see more producers and directors start acting like this. The suits at all of these corporations are the ones causing the problems, not them. I mean, how much do you really think that Kojima *wants* to work on another Metal Gear instead of something else? Probably not that much (but still just enough since it is his baby), but the suits keep telling him to make new ones.

If only Odashima would have stood up to Namco about Soulcalibur V… *sigh*

  • Tales_of_Master

That’s it, I’m defiantly getting Tekken Tag 2. I didn’t plan on buying it originally, but Harada is just too awesome to turn one of his games down.

  • Oni123

finally someone who feels the same way about DLC as me ^^

  •  “I’ve been saying that, at least for Tekken, regarding techniques,
characters and stages, these three things won’t be charged for, even if
    they are DLC.”

I still give mad props to Harada for his own philosophy. Though he could have other additions like customization items charged for. At least that makes more sense than characters and stages, plus it will get NB off his back.

  • Samurai_Heart

Thumbs up to Harada, we all know how much Namco-Bandai loves their paid DLC “cough” Tales/Soul Calibur Games “cough” =p. It’s time like these the fans of Tekken can be proud of both the series and all involved with the game =). Must say the game is looking very good.

  • pho_Enix

Katsuhiro Harada is a god amongst men.

  • Now all he needs to do, is bring Tekken X Street Fighter with him to Tokyo Game Show 2012 this September… ;)

    • Anime10121

I cannot wait for that, hopefully that comes next, and then Tekken 7!

      • Me neither. Despite what everyone says, I am still enjoying Street Fighter X Tekken, and I will surely buy the DLC characters later this month, but deep down, I’m really waiting to see how Tekken X Street Fighter turns out.

I just hope, though, that Sakura and Juri will be in the game… I love those girls in Street Fighter-games, and I am very curious about how they would look with realistic character models…

And I’m interested in seeing how Harada-san and his team worked Hadoukens, Tatsumaki Sempu Kyaku’s and the like into the Tekken-engine… ;)

  • Model_M

    Stand your ground Harada!

  • XypherCode

    Good guy :D

  • GotoHell

Considering Paid DLC over at Namco Bandai games is usually just Disc-Locked Content, i’d say he’s made the right decision.

  •  supporting tekken from now onjk, i always did

  • Harada-san, you’re such a boss. I’d gladly pick up some paid DLC if Namco forces it upon you. I love supporting your work, I’ve done so for the past 17 years and will continue to do so in the future!

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    Stay strong, Harada!!

  • SLick123456789111

    Stay classy Harada.

  • epy

You’re Batman in the corrupt Gotham City that is today’s gaming industry.

    •  He is not the producer the industry needs, but what it deserves. (Isn’t it the other way around?)

  • Hoshi星

Our hero: Katsuhiro “I won’t charge customers with on-disc paid DLC” Harada

    • Kitestwinblades

      “Hero Katsuhiro”
I like the sounds of that XD

  • I have only one thing I would say to Harada about this…

    No, really, YOU’RE AWESOME SIR!
    *starts to workship*

  • MrRobbyM

    Go go go!

  • thaKingRocka

I like the cut of your jib, Katsuhiro. … Son, how would you like to head up production of every game from here on out?

  • Jonathan Keycross

I would pay for a DLC named “Harada´s well deserved paid vacations”.

  • What a bro.

  • Guest

Namco probably heavily insists based on how much $ they make with Idolmaster DLC

    • Speedo Redempteur

      or Tales of DLC
      Or Soul Calibur Dlc
      or ridge racer Dlc
      or …

  • Sakurazaki

I wouldn’t start praising results just yet. I admire his spunk, but I hope he can keep it. If he’s got good rep in the company, he’ll do fine. Maybe he can make something else paid content. I dunno, I just don’t see the higher ups in Bamco leaving DLC behind; at least in this current time.

If he doesn’t keep his spunk, his resistance could mean bad juju for him. What will you do then?

Also, proof that some DLC aren’t decisions made by the people some of us tend to put our blame on. It’s their bosses, lol.

  • Mago Iichi

Harada proving once again that he’s a certified beast.

  • XiaomuArisu

Just readed the comments and realized that he is the Elvis of gaming.XD
    Does he have groupies?

    • Testsubject909

I’m not sure I’d call him the Elvis of gaming.

edit: But it does seem like he does have groupies.

  • Victoria [Rokuso3]

Finally, someone important in videogame industry who seems to hate DLCs. This man is awesome.

  • Solomon_Kano

Further proof that Harada is awesome.

  • ThomasTruong

    “bikini bottoms for Lee Chaolan”

    *Thumbs up*

    • Göran Isacson

Just a thumbs up? You don’t mean “Tuu fingahs?”

      • ThomasTruong

Thought I was being edgy and obscure enough with the ending references, but you took it a step further, good show.

        • Göran Isacson

I try~. Besides, it is an ending that’s… very hard to forget.

  • Luna Kazemaru

Not that I have a issue with DLC Harada is proving himself to be a complete bada** in my eyes lol.

  • MrJechgo

Damn, Harada sure is a fighter himself, that’s quite an impressive display or resolve and discipline here.

  • Hours

I guess I’m one of those eccentric people that want speedos for characters like Lee. XD

I’d gladly pay for that DLC.

    • Fair warning: I give no kindness to pretty boys with speedos. xD

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

Now I’m worried for Harada. He’s done so much to make these games great and I admire ones of the few Japanese developers (like Ono and Kojima) can speak openly.

Lee’s bikini bottoms. Does Harada mean Lee’s ending in Tekken 5 when was wearing a speedo? Oh no.

    • He’s referring to the banana hammocks that Lee and Heihachi are wearing in that ending, yes.

  • Natat

Why is Harada such a badass!? dayum!

  • Valtiel Ikari

for his courage and awesome badassery, I salute you, Harada-san!

  • Testsubject909

    *scrolls down, scrolls back up*

Well… seems everyone’s already said what needed to be said.
I just hope he’s not the next to go (reference to Ono here).

And with that said *Goes on a like clicking spree*

  • heartless141

One badass man. Eff the system! :D

  • miyamoto

Tell them where to stick it, Harada san!

  • Shadowman

Yes! Capcom can learn a little from Harada. Cause this did is the Boss

  • Give him some love on twitter!

  • splintered

Harada deserves my money. Yes, I put that right. He DESERVES it.

    • M’iau M’iaut

In that pic it looks like he’s going to take it, even if he didn’t deserve it.

      • PoweredByHentai

He could wear a BOSS t-shirt (Minami-ke reference) and we’d still give him money.

  • What kind of topsy turvy world are we living in where Namco is sticking up for consumers and Atlus is shafting them?

  • Nitraion

“If I was given the choice to include paid DLC or quit Namco, I would maybe quit… Or maybe I would just say: “Get someone else to deal with this’.”
I maybe not really like Tekken game but this quote is a boss….

  • Rolling Guy

You sir, you are my hero. He seriously needs some encouragement on twitter. Not just requests and shit.

Though bikinis for the female characters do sound enticing. But I don’t really want Tekken to be Soul Calibur.

  • Hinataharem

    Control F: Capcom

    No results.

I am so proud of all of you.

  • Kitestwinblades

This wins Game of the Year in my book by default.
Not “Officially” of course, and I still need to play it… but the development of the game REALLY puts the consumers and fans first. Not just by content, but by giving us a real break on our wallets. Not being DLC abusive is about as awesome as when operation rainfall started. Someone doing something different and trying to give people what they want- no matter what. No Paid-DLC and Localization are two of my favorite Titles to see on Siliconera X3  Thanks Harada. Somewhere out there… Someone is getting the new Heihachi hair just for you.

I cant wait to play it and hope this has the smoothest possible release :3

  • Tee Niitris

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 = Win

  • Bentan

    fight da powa!!!

  • KyoyaHibari

Good man Harada, stick it to those cheap bastards!

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

While i really love how Harada here keep holding his principal of no bad DLC policies here however if you ask me here, i think while he is pleasing the fans here, he must also remember that his career is also under the bet here.

Well, here i can only hope that Harada will do well here.^^ And can comes out with great Tekken experience here.^^

  • Göran Isacson

I wonder if what Harada is saying is that he wants to work so much that he can’t even bring himself to take a vacation/leave early, or if he feels like he CAN’T go home early due to the vital role he has at being the one man with the spine to stand up to his bosses.
