Ragnarok Odyssey Gets Its First Set Of English Screenshots

By Ishaan . July 12, 2012 . 11:01am

Xseed have released the first English screenshots of Ragnarok Odyssey for the PlayStation Vita. The game, developed by Grandia developer, Game Arts, is set in an original world inspired by the universe of popular MMORPG, Ragnarok Online.

In Ragnarok Odyssey, human beings discover the Isolated Land, hidden behind the Thousand Year Mountains, which are said to be impossible for even a flying dragon to cross. When the mountains come crumbling down, they free the giants within the Isolated Land, who begin invading human territory.

Ragnarok Odyssey lets you create a customized character and choose from six job classes—Sword Warrior, Hunter, Hammersmith, Assassin, Mage, and Cleric. Character customization options include gender, facial features, accessories and so on.

Ragnarok Odyssey will be available sometime this summer in North America. The game will have online multiplayer co-op for up to four players.

    Isn’t that Hatsuu’s character?

    •  Yupp it absolutely seems that way, judging from Hatsuu’s character drawing and various tweets it’s definitely the one. xD

    • Hatsuu

Yup! That’s me! I wish I had time to take screenshots of the badass “Gunner” outfit. I’ve been running around feeling like I’m in a western for the last day or so, hahaha.

      • PoweredByHentai

Will the DLCs be brought over as well?

  • RaikageV

Is a release in Europe also planned?
If not, I’d probably buy the American version, but still..

  • Already pre-ordered, so anxious.

  • Syltique

    Getting this day one.

And I’m kind of shocked by the dialogue in that first screenshot.  Pretty harsh!

  • xavier axol

day one purchase!! but i do have a question. even though monster hunter and ragnarok are two very different games, they do look like it plays the same. so would you say that odyssey is better than mh3g? (i’m ignorant so i need more info. on odyssey)

    • Syltique

Here’s a video showing a lot of gameplay.  It’s just from the demo, but you get a good idea of how one of the classes plays at the very beginning.

It looks like there is fairly fluid combat, with even some air combos like devil may cry thrown in.  This doesn’t show any of the other classes, and I think there are at least 6.  It also doesn’t show multi-player, but it gives you an idea of what the game looks like.

Basically, looks like a fun, quality hack and slash game to keep people occupied until Soul Sacrifice and Phantasy Star Online 2 in 2013.

      • xavier axol

i actually remember this guy, he has lot’s of ps vita vibs. it was because of him that i bought my vita the first day it came out, he did a better job than sony in promoting the thing (the best looking hanheld of all times). it does look great! probably better then 3g and it seen rather fun to play. how is the story mode? how long it is? and i hope that people give this a chance. the vita really deserve this kind of game and with time , may be (if sony goes all out ) the vita will be come the power house of rpgs. :-)

        • PoweredByHentai

I’m not sure if there’s even much of a story in RO but the satisfying combat was really what made me like it.

As an archer/hunter, I usually play somewhat conservatively by picking things off before it gets too close to me.  But I can always just get up close and personal and slaughter things like that Gun-Kata demonstration in the Equilibrium movie.

          • xavier axol

well i got mh freedom unite 2 and i like the costumization, but the maintenances and paced makes it really hard for me sometimes (i played for about 7hours and i still take very easy quest, where i still get the same stuff and i don’t advance at all). i really like what i’m hearing about odassey, so i guess that going solo won’t be a problem?

          • PoweredByHentai

Going solo is not a problem.  I’m playing as an archer and basically dominated most of the mobs.  Some mobs are definitely more difficult than others but the options available to you make dealing with them a lot less painful than MH.  PSO2, for example, lets me decide how I want to deal with monsters on my various quests, which is both good and makes the game go by faster.

          • Syltique

Damn, now I need to watch Equilibrium again.

          • PoweredByHentai

            Such a good movie.  XD

          • Zal_Yagun

Controls basically like God Eater combined with the combo system from dynasty warriors, this is what Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce could have been if they didn’t use 6 as a basis .

That being said, with what time i spent on the JP demo, the combat is best in the genre.

only thing that I think can top it is either a hunter game made by Platinum or Pre-NGIII Team Ninja.

          • PoweredByHentai

It is amazing what a simple but well-designed combat system can bring to the table.  :D

      • PoweredByHentai

The classes that I am aware of are:
        -Ninja (pre-order DLC)

There might be more classes via DLC so that is always something to look out for.

        • Syltique

Very cool.  I’m sure I’ll have to give them all a go.

As far as DLC, I don’t know.  XSEED doesn’t seem to always get the DLC stuff since they’re still a pretty small operation.  They didn’t bring over any of the Sumioni free DLC as far as I know.  It may have been out of their hands too, so who knows.

          • PoweredByHentai

Yeah, I have no idea about the DLC stuff and whether those will come over or not.

    • PoweredByHentai

The differences really come down to gameplay/combat.

MH has a slower, more deliberate approach to combat whereas RO’s combat is fast paced.  Both punish you very severely for making mistakes but RO felt more forgiving because the fast pacing means it is somewhat faster to get out of a mess.

In MH, if you get cornered or surrounded, breaking out of that contain is difficult and involves taking a number of stun locking hits.  You have to manually aim and time your attacks since there is no “target lock-on” feature (don’t know if that was finally included in Tri but I highly doubt it).  You also usually don’t know how much health a monster has left so the only clues you have are changes in the monster’s behavior.  Once the monster dies, you have to harvest its carcass before it fades into oblivion.  Combat in MH isn’t flashy and can feel kind of mechanical when you have to do it deliberately again and again on your quest for items that let you forge ever better gear.

In RO, breaking out of a contain is very easy since you can air dash your way out of a mess.  You can choose to manually aim your attacks like in MH or you can choose to focus on one target at a time via the lock-on system.  Unlike MH, you can see how much health the monsters have, which makes discriminating between monsters much easier.  I’ve personally come to love the lock-on system because it means that I can keep track of that one enemy that I’ve been pummeling with my arrows and still dodge the other enemies of the same type.  Once the enemies die, their carcasses are harvested automatically, so the more you kill, the more you collect automatically.  Combat in RO can be as mechanical or as flashy as you want.  That option to let me chain my attacks into a nice fancy combo on an enemy is not only awesome to behold and execute, it is sometimes necessary depending on the circumstances.

Another difference between MH and RO is the whole maintenance aspect.  MH is very nitpicky about maintenance.  RO, not so much simply because the Ragnarok Online universe never really dealt with it in the first place.  Where MH requires you to consume various potions and meats to uber or boost your stats, RO lets you customize your boosts/stats via the cards you insert into your equipment.  Want that knockback resistance?  Put that card into any slot on your gear, just remember to retrieve your cards when you need to switch equipment.

I guess what I like most about Ragnarok Odyssey is that it gives me options to how I want to approach a problem.  I can play it hardcore a la Monster Hunter style or I can simplify my life and use the lock-on features and fancy combo system.

Honestly, in terms of combat, RO’s fast pacing is more similar to Phantasy Star Online 2’s fast pace action.

      • xavier axol

that sounds music to my hears ( fast paced and fancy combos) and the fact that those are more similar to phantasy star ( which is a series that i love and actually finish) i’m thrill about this!! thanks for the info. and your time.

p.s. i’m so happy that i would hug you, but that would be awkward. ;-)

        • PoweredByHentai

One other thing I forgot to mention is that if you’re playing as an archer, you might want to take to the air from time to time and abuse that temporary hover-while-you-attack-from-the-air ability.  It makes you feel like a real badass.

It is also one of the reasons why I brought up PSO2.

      • Exkaiser

        Tri-G for the 3DS featured a lock-on function.

I don’t think it lets you lock onto individual breakable parts (like, say, Lord of Arcana), just keeps the view centered on the target.

“Where MH requires you to consume various potions and meats to uber or boost your stats, RO lets you customize your boosts/stats via the cards you insert into your equipment.”
Er, like the armor gem system in MonHun? Of course, Odyssey is getting it from RO, but it’s the same concept.

        • PoweredByHentai

Ah, they finally added such a feature.  That is something that really helps with gameplay and general stress management.

R.Online has been around longer though and those cards aren’t just for utility purposes since they retain their “cute” images. Those cards are really what made Ragnarok Online an interesting game.

          ADDED 2:
I totally forgot to mention that Ragnarok’s card system tend to be very combat-heavy effects. Like deal +50% damage to demi-human type monsters or reduce damage from certain types or classes of monsters.

  • XSEED!!! Take our money!!! Here in Europe as well!!!
I don’t even have a vita yet but I’ll definitely buy the game as soon as it’s released! Thank you, thank you so much! >/////<

  • jujubee88

Whaa? [GOT Season 2 on HBO spoiler next line blow!!!]

The plot sounds kinda like the ending of “Game of Thrones” seasons 2 when those things came out of nowhere after “resting” for years or w/e! XD

    [/End spoiler]

Game looks awesome thanks for the PR, Sili and Ishaan. I mean it! I was on the boarder of not buying this game since I have a butt ton of priorities (and I am not just messaging my own ego writing that). Now, this is a LOCK. I am buying this game for the VITA come hell or high water! ^_^

  • Oh wow! That does look much better than I expected. I definitely want to check it out now. Especially since it has coop.

  • …I think I am going to cry from joy (●´⌓`●)

    • JazzyMan123

According to certain sources, for America, June to September.

      • Nitraion

        Ok i hope its august…

        • PoweredByHentai

Amazon still has it listed for August.

  • HatsyaSouji

I wanna wear a Novice outfit for my would-be avatar.

  • Nikolai Sumcad

I cannot wait  to play this online with people!

  • Christopher Nunes

Can’t wait! I’ve pre-order the game already, and it looks great so far!

Are there any dual-wielding twin sword classes in the game?

    • PoweredByHentai

The Assassin class technically uses Katars, which are the “twin sword” weapons of the Ragnarok Online universe.

I don’t recall if Assassins can equip two of those one-handed swords or not because that was definitely an ability that was unique to the Assassin class in Ragnarok Online.

Here’s a video of someone showing you the Assassin class and giving you a quick run through of the town:

      • Christopher Nunes

Hopefully the Assassin class has the dual swords, otherwise I might go with a “samurai”-like class.

        Thank you for the video!

        • PoweredByHentai

Yeah, I haven’t tried my luck with the Assassin class yet because I know for sure that I won’t play any other classes after I switch to it.  As it is, I’m really happy with my Archer play because of the really fancy combos you can pull with it.  For example, you can use a power attack on an enemy to launch it into the air and then plug it full of arrows while you’re still on the ground.

You can also perform kills from the air, which are just as flashy as ground-based kills.

As simple as the combat is, you’ll realize that this game is as much about killing with style.  It might not seem like much but man it feels GOOD to kill things like a boss.

          • Christopher Nunes

Sounds cool! Can’t wait to play this game! ^_^

      •  Yeah, Assassins can use two one-handed weapons in the MMO. Can be two knifes, one-handed swords, one-handed axes, or a shield. They could also have one weapon and bare hand the other.

Would be interesting to see how this affects this game if they decided to include it. I seen many powerful damage dealers in the MMO who based their attacks solely on having different combination of weapons to switch between.

        • PoweredByHentai

Yeah, my main class in Ragnarok Online is almost always the Assassin.  With Ragnarok Odyssey though, I want to at least give the other classes a chance before I settle on the Assassin again.  That’s why I currently don’t know if Odyssey’s Assassin class can use single weapons or not.

I do have to warn you though, the Archer class will give you a God complex.  XD

          •  Not sure if I’ll get this on release or not (depending if there is another code to get gear in Ro =p ) When I do though, I’ll be playing either Smith or Cleric since there is no Monk class on this one.

If the Archer class needs arrows on this one I understand they having some advantage of range or maybe a bit extra damage. I’ll try it out first to see how it plays but not likely to be my main.

    • PoweredByHentai

Here’s a video with Assassin gameplay:

He’s not using the lock-on feature though.  The lock-on feature is amazingly helpful if you are a ranged character like an archer or mage but it is most useful for discriminating between which enemies you have attacked and which enemies are still at full health.

I say this because you will get surrounded by enemies very often and breaking out of an encirclement or contain is easy but taking out all the annoying small fries first tends to be a higher priority than taking out the dangerous-looking ones.

      • Exkaiser

Looking at his other Ragnarok Odyssey videos, the game looks pretty good.

        • PoweredByHentai

Some of the accessories like the Kitty Band give me a huge nostalgia factor, largely because my female Assassin in Ragnarok Online usually wore a Kitty Band.  Either that or she wears a Sakkat (straw hat) like this one:

          • Exkaiser

I wonder if the Pirate Bandana or the Hot-Blooded Headband are in this game. They’re what my monk always wore.

Of course, monks aren’t in this game, but maybe we’ll get them in the sequel. It seemed to do well enough to warrant one. They’d fit perfectly, they were already a combo-centric class in the original RO!

          • PoweredByHentai

Well, the Ninja and apparently the Gunner classes are DLC classes.  It is entirely possible that there are more classes that I haven’t seen because I haven’t checked its Japanese PS Store page in so long.

As for the head accessories, Pirate Bandanna might be in the game.  I’ll try to keep an eye out for it as I progress through the game.

          • Exkaiser

I looked into it, and it seems the Ninja preorder is actually a costume of the ninja class, not a playable class.

Likewise, some of the DLCs are Novice and Super Novice outfits.

          • PoweredByHentai

Ah, that’s what I get for not switching my Vita’s account to my Japanese account.  Oh well.

I looked up some of those costumes you mentioned and yeah, they look pretty nice actually.  That ninja costume will be the death of me.  That’s going to go on my Assassin and I will not be able to play any other classes once that happens.  XD

  • Draparde

i should preorder this game!…i forgot it was comming out anytime soon to be honest lol

  • oh! i cant wait for english version

  • wer can i buy this english version?
