Award-winning videogame scribe, Rhianna Pratchet, is penning the story for the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, Crystal Dynamics revealed today.

In the past, Pratchet has worked on games such as Mirror’s Edge, Heavenly Sword and the Overlord series among others.

“Seldom do we get the opportunity to re-imagine and reinvent a legend, so getting my narrative hands on Miss Croft was a once-in-a-life-time opportunity,” Pratchet said. “It was going back to the genesis of videogame action heroines and exploring how to make such an iconic character meaningful and relatable for gamers today.”

Tomb Raider re-tells the origins of series protagonist, Lara Croft, placing her on an island inhabited by mercenaries where she has to fend for herself, following a shipwreck. The game will be released on March 5th, 2013.

Her pose for her wikipedia page is pretty sophisticated and edgy. I cant wait to see how this game turns out. If now the rape isshu can just be left alone so that game can really shine in pre release medias and what nots.

Yet another reason for a day 1 buy

Mirror’s Edge had a pretty decent story stacked on top of the otherwise awesome acrobatic first person platformer.

Looking forward to Tomb Raider, have been for a while.

Is this a recent thing or are they just announcing it? Because the story seems like something that has already been there for awhile… I wonder if it’s going through a major re-write with a female author to shake off the whole rape-is-moe thing.

It is likely that she was always (at least as long as we have seen videos or story bits) writing it and just got a timed reveal to hype the game towards launch like the voice actor was.

The only thing a female writer can do for the potential rape is ensure some who are certain that males can only write in a situation like that to weaken and sexualize a female character for a male audience.

I’ll be blunt and say that I never found Overlord to be particularly funny or witty. It was a good game, but the script was somewhat generic.

I haven’t played the other games though. Maybe she’s better with the serious stuff?

Her track record isn’t the most impressive around, but I don’t remember any of the games she’s worked on (that I’ve played) being particularly badly written, so there’s hope.

The dialogue in Prince of Persia 08 was pretty great.

      • SirRichard

Eh, I didn’t particularly like it. It wasn’t bad, though, certainly above a lot of games’ attempts at dialogue, but it annoyed me a lot. Might’ve been the voice actors, though.

Being a fan of the original series, I was really excited about this game. Then I watched the trailers and read a couple of articles and I completely lost interest in it. I’m not quite giving up on it yet and I hope something will make me change my mind about this game, but all that unnecessary violence (which I find quite disturbing) did really put me off.

Oh man, having played Mirror’s Edge and Heavenly Sword recently that’s not really a good thing. The stories were pretty damn terrible. I’m older now though so I’m guess I’m just finally noticing how terrible video game stories are in general. It’s why I enjoy my simple fanservice games. Cringe-worthy dialogue and attempts to be serious and epic that fall flat are worse than blatant sex imo.

Anyways, it’s easy enough to enjoy games with bad stories so it’s not that big a deal. I’m liking what I’ve seen of this game so far. I hope it doesn’t disappoint when released.

She’s Terry Pratchett’s (author of the Discworld series, F.I.Y) daughter so, if she inherited at least some of her father’s talent and inspiration we can expect great writing.

  • badmoogle

I loved Mirror’s Edge but its story was mediocre at best IMO.

Well I dont have much to say about the story per say but I dont see why people realy get upset with Lara being “victimised” I guess. Most rich people are seriously catered to and under normal circumstances wouldnt do so well under wich this game is based so I can see why they would make her whiney, weak, ect ect its showing the tale of her becoming strong and a fighter and that normally dosent happen easilly.
    Hard times build a person.

Does it really matter what they come up with? Kind of hard to get invested in something that gets “rebooted” as often as this.

I haven’t played most of the games she wrote in, & this is kinda related, but does anybody know if they (EA DICE) have any plans to make another Mirror’s Edge? Maybe I missed the news if they did or didn’t. One of my favorite 1st person games this gen.
