Sonic Adventure 2 Dashes To XBLA And PSN This Fall

By Ishaan . July 16, 2012 . 11:30am

This past weekend at the San Diego Comic-Con, Sega announced a version of Sonic Adventure 2 for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, scheduled for release this fall. No PC version has been announced thus far.

While no further details regarding Sonic Adventure 2 for XBLA and PSN were announced at Comic-Con, an accidental leak via the Xbox Live Marketplace website last month indicated that this game will be an HD update with offline multiplayer and online leaderboards.

The original Sonic Adventure was released for Xbox Live Arcade in 2010.

psn! (then realizes there talking about for ps3) :(

will this be the sa2 battle version? is chao garden intact?

    • Nee Nee

If chao garden’s taken out I ain’t even touching this.

      • Xapth

They left Chao in the Sonic Adventure XBLA/PSN releases, I think we’ll be safe!

As for those Big the Cat cameos… only time will tell.

      • SLick123456789111

        Lol

  • malek86

I can’t wait to be rolling around at the speed of sound.

The GC version just doesn’t cut it anymore on the HDTV… not to mention I really don’t like that joypad.

Also, unlike other people, I actually liked the Tails/Eggman parts too. So that’s two thirds of the game being good for me. The hunting parts, eh. Nothing is perfect.

    • MrRobbyM

      Wait.
What? People hated the Tails and Eggman parts? I mean, I was ignorant
to the internet back then but I found them to be some of the most
enjoyable parts of the game. The only parts I disliked were the kart
racing levels. The drifting controls were whack, yo.

By hunting parts, do you mean Knucles/Rougue levels?

      • British_Otaku

On forums, there were debates on whether you can appreciate Sonic Unleashed as “half of it” is bad, some retorts were on the lines of SA2 was “two thirds bad”.

Character segmented gameplay with the non-Sonicish parts being weak is never going to go too well.

      • malek86

The Knux/Rouge levels are serviceable in-story, but not when I had to try and get Rank A in all of them.

The driving levels were annoying, but there’s only two in the whole game so I didn’t really care.

        • MrRobbyM

I agree with you there. Those were frustrating times.

    • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

I”m the other way.  I found the Treasure Hunting to be my favorite and shooting to be the boring one. I liked Gamma’s gameplay but without the time limit the levels are more dragged out.

      • AnimeRemix

I feel the same way you feel about the Treasure Hunting and Shooting stages. I really found Treasure Hunting to just be extremely fun…

        • MrRobbyM

Now that I think about it, I think half the reason I found the treasure hunting levels to be so fun was because they all had some of the best music in the game. Security Hall is so freakin’ catchy and memorable for me.

  • MrRobbyM

About time. The life of Chaos is behind me but I may delve into it again if appropriately priced.

This also better be the GC version. This doesn’t exist to me if it isn’t.

  • ZEROthefirst

Hell yes!!! I wish I could transfer my chao’s over from my gamecube but this is still good news for me and a first day purchase :D

  • omeganeko

i hope it will have online multi player battle.

    • akeboshi

If they got online leaderboards why wouldn’t they add online multiplayer?

  • NeoAthanasius

“I got places to go, gotta follow my rainbow!”

  • DuskSharkEX

Who wants to escape from the city again?

    • MrRobbyM

Honestly, it’s my most played level in any game ever. I wouldn’t mind playing through it again :)

      • DuskSharkEX

It’s my favorite song in the game!

    • https://twitter.com/kcgst Karu

I will , just like in those gamecube days my friend *-*

    • Chow

As much as I want you all to follow me and set me free.

  • Xapth

Those masters of secrecy over at Sega kept this hidden so well!

This is probably one of my favorite games of all time, I hope the cutscenes are properly synced in this release (everyone talked over each other in the Gamecube version!)

They’re not re-recording or anything, I hope. I need Ryan Drummond and co. for the additional nostalgia factor.

Of course, now I’m going to see the Chao and wonder why they ever stopped featuring them after this game. I wonder if we’ll ever get that Sonic Adventure 3 someday…

    • British_Otaku

Typically HD remakes have the bare minimum amount of work done for them, meaning that the soundtrack (and voice work) is left alone unless there is a contract issue which isn’t the case for voices in my experience. No rerecording most likely, would be cool if they had an option to listen to a performance from the current voices, just because I said so.

Sonic Adventure 3 is a demand I see oh too often… It can be seen as even Sonic Unleashed as I quote Yoshihisa Hashimoto:

“As a development team, we originally started off this project planning to create Sonic Adventure 3. In our minds, this game will have more in common with the older Sonic Adventure series. It has no relation to Sonic The Hedgehog (the 360/PS3 game) or Sonic and the Secret Rings.”

So it is probably better if you ask for an open 3D platforming Sonic game (Heroes, Shadow, 06) with a city sandbox setting (Sonic 06 or Sonic World Adventure/Sonic Unleashed), with a series of optional characters who function differently (06).

I don’t believe in names when there have been so many sequels with elements in common. Perhaps, when there has only been few sequels which miss the point or don’t run down the same road… You don’t see people asking for a Zelda III, you see people asking for something like Zelda II.

      • Xapth

I knew Sonic Unleashed started off early in development as Sonic Adventure 3, but the end result is quite different from the Adventure titles in terms of actual gameplay.

The movement in the daytime stages felt more restricted than the platforming in the older titles. The nighttime stages may have been 3D platforming, but the gameplay was very slow. In addition, the limited cast of characters was another differential from the Adventure titles (regardless of whether or not they were playable)

Of course, when this game WAS still being developed as Sonic Adventure 3, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and Amy were all planned to be playable. Once it became Unleashed though, they were all scrapped. I’d say the hub world was the most apparent “Adventure” element still retained in the final game.

I enjoyed the game, but it certainly didn’t feel like the Sonic Adventure 3 I was looking for. The closest game we’ve had to SA3 in terms of gameplay and story was Sonic 06. Unfortunately, the critical reception to that game is also the most likely reason we haven’t seen any more titles that play like the Adventure titles.

Now that Sega’s last few Sonic titles have been generally well-received (Unleashed, Colors, Generations), the chances of seeing a Sonic Adventure 3 that builds on the gameplay from SA & SA2 would seem slim. That being said, Sega itself knows that there’s a bit of a divide between the fans of it’s Sonic fanbase. It’s going to be a tough job pleasing everyone, and there will probably be some fans who are stuck in their nostalgia and hate on everything that isn’t exactly like the games they used to love. We’ll just have to wait and see where they go with it now.

I’ll probably still enjoy whatever it is anyways. I’ve been playing Sonic since the Genesis era, and my favorite Sonic game of all time is Sonic 3/Knuckles, but I still loved the heck out of the Sonic Adventure games. The only game I’m not too fond of is, surprisingly, Colors. It’s a great game, just not one of my favorite Sonic experiences.

As for whether or not they should call the next grand Sonic title Sonic Adventure 3, that’s up to them. The power in a name depends on the franchise. In something like Sonic, I think calling the game SA3 would be the smarter decision, since it would let the fans know “Hey, this is our next grand Sonic Adventure! You fans who liked the older games, you’re gonna love this one!”

I just want my chao back.

HD chaos! I already know what that looks like thanks to emulation but I’ll be buying this anyways. Emulation does not like Wild Canyon.

    Oddly enough despite a preference for 2D Sonic, this is my favorite Sonic game >w<; Maaan I remember having a great time with the Gamecube version, slowly working through it getting all the emblems. Sure I know the game has most of the quirks that's plagued 3D Sonic, but something about it as a whole just made it work  for me u3u;

  • LETS PRAY FOR LOCALIZATION

I may not a big Sonic fan but i am very glad with this news since i really liked sonic adventure 1(PC) and SA2 never saw a PC/PS2 release.. but now with its release on PSN i can finally enjoy the sequel :D

  • ddh819

Was the first Sonic Adventure on PSN an “HD remake” also? just wondering if this is going to be widescreen or upscaled but same aspect ratio.

    • SLick123456789111

I think they’ll upscale it but you’ll still have the bars on each side of the screen.
If that happens to be the case , the little they could do is put some art on the bars so it doesn’t look so bland like in the SA1 PSN/XBLA game.

      • Kefkiroth

I hope not. It doesn’t hurt to add widescreen support (the PS3/360 could more than handle it). If they’re advertising this as an HD remake, it should be widescreen (like a lot of HD remakes I’ve played).

    • Kefkiroth

The first SA1 was a straight up port, purple bars on the side… it was just terrible. I hope they won’t do that for SA2 (since they’re saying it’s HD).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000172099718 Dominic Hunter

This is great, but how much will it cost? I’m just really not into rebuying old games I already own these days, no mater how much they bump up the resolution. For people who never got to play it though, this is an awesome opportunity!

  • Chris Downes

This is so amazing! I freaking loved the GCN version! I wish I could transfer over the chao garden since I spent quite a bit of time in there (no life haha) But this is really cool, wonder when it comes out.

  • TheFoolArcana

    I-I don’t know if I wanna suffer through the Knuckles/Rouge levels again…

    • OatMatadoQuatro

Knuckle’s levels in his first appearances were much better

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

Oh come on they’re not bad, only certain levels (Knuckle’s Aquatic Mine and Rogue’s Prison one which i can’t remember right now)

    • Kefkiroth

I thought they were kind of fun, when I was a kid anyways… Just think about the HD graphics and not the strange gameplay when going through those levels I guess…

    • Zonic505

I didn’t mind them until you got into space (& that prison level w/ Rouge. & Aquatic Mine, despite the sweet music). Ugh, those levels were so big, it was annoying.

  • Mister_Nep

I need to finish Sonic Adventure before this comes out. Very eager to get this game.

I think the best part was the reveal trailer showing that Sega (THE MASTERS OF SECRECY!) has a sense of humor.

Time to prepare my body for Chao breeding again.^^

  • Kefkiroth

I’m the weirdo who prefers the 3D Adventure games despite growing up with 2D Sonics. I just think that the 3D Sonic levels felt a lot more vibrant and engaging than the 2D Sonic levels (Just look at City Escape and Crazy Gadget).
Plus you had a bigger field-of-view so you didn’t have to run in to spikes/enemies randomly when playing the levels for the first time.

  • http://takopako.tumblr.com takopako

OMG. THIS IS ONE OF MY TOP 10 GAMES. WILL GET.
