Sleeping Dogs Has A Star-Studded Cast Of Actors Lending Their Voices

By Ishaan . July 17, 2012 . 2:40pm

Square Enix Europe and United Front Games didn’t hold back when going out looking for actors to provide voice-over work for Hong Kong crime drama, Sleeping Dogs. Here’s the game’s main cast:

Wei Shen – Will Yun Lee (Die Another Day, Total Recall)

Wei is the main character, an undercover detective infiltrating the triads.

Police Inspector Pendrew – Tom Wilkinson (Batman Begins, The Full Monty)

Assisting Wei to earn the trust of his childhood friend, Jackie Mah.

Jackie Mah – Edison Chen (Internal Affairs, The Dark Knight)

A low-level thug working for the Sun On Yee triad.

Winston Chu – Parry Shen (Better Luck Tomorrow, The New Guy)

Through Jackie, Wei becomes one of Winston’s most trusted lieutenants.

Other supporting cast members include: Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man), Robin Shou (Mortal Kombat), Lucy Liu (Kill Bill, Charlie’s Angels), Kelly Hu (Martial Law) and more. The video above shows some of the actors mentioned here recording their lines for the game.

Sleeping Dogs will be released in North America on August 14th and in Europe on August 17th.

I hope this, and projects like Beyond, help sort of ease the separation between “voice actors” and just “actors.” I can think of MANY a talented stage or screen actor I’d love to have doing more game voice work. I mean, plenty of actors and actresses do voice work for animated films, even Ghibli, so it’d be interesting to hear those voices somewhere else, just as a change of pace. Perhaps some game/anime talent could even cross over into animated film too.

Surely, there are PLENTY of technicalities and contractual things that’ll prevent this from happening on any large scale, but it’s still interesting to hope. c:

I think the main separation is that pretty much all Hollywood actors are union workers, while the types of voice actors who usually appear in games (JYB, Yuri Lowenthal, Steve Blum, anyone from Funimation, etc.) are either non-union or are willing to work for non-union wages. Hence games, much like anime dubbing, tend to go for the purely vocal performers.

It’s certainly not a bad thing overall, but I do agree that it’s nice to see some blending between the two.

This is one of my most anticipated games for this year. Glad they picked a lot of Asian actors and didn’t totally Hollywood white wash it. Hopefully they also speak Cantonese in some scenes too for some authenticity…

    • Bentan

there are some cantonese curse words in it.. diu lei! haha!

I’m not sure why there are some Caucasian actors voicing Asian characters regardless of how sexy Emma Stone sounds. At least the games has James Hong as well, I love that guy in Big Trouble in Little China, Mulan and Balls of Fury.

Hopefully this game will be good, it reminds me of GTAIV and Yakuza only Chinese and more gory.

Emma Stone is playing a Caucasian character and all the Asian characters are being played by Asian people or people of Asian heritage.

Actually there’s at least one Asian character voiced by a caucasian…

For these type of things it always come down to one of two things – authenticity or good (voice) acting. I wouldn’t be surprised if not all the Asian roles are being voiced by Asians. If the game is well-written and the voice actors are good, then I’d be happy.

I agree wholeheartedly… just pointing out that not all Asian characters are voiced by Asian VAs.

I understand. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

    I came @ Emma Stone

  • gimpylee

Wow they actually have Chinese actors play Chinese parts.  It’s like these devs are culturally sensitive or something. I may buy it just to support the fact that they arent using non-chinese actors to speak in ching chong accents as most other games do *cough stranglehold cough*

With all the hands on research and work they did in Hong Kong and the triads and the hundreds of photos they took, it would have been stupid to make it an all white cast in my opinion. They are really taking this project seriously

Really looking forward to this game. Sadly, it’s probably the closest I’ll get to Hong Kong.

  • Dantis

This is an awesome cast list.

    Very cool.

  • z_merquise

Robin Shou? Oh yeah, you mean Liu Kang!

This game looked interesting by the way. Better check this game starting now.

I totally can’t wait for this game! Didn’t know Lucy Liu was in this?! Also, Kelly Hu was Lady Deathstrike in X-Men 2.

Oh, that’s right. I knew I remembered her from somewhere else.

  • BelmontHeir

Edison Chen is a voice actor in this game? As a big Hong Kong movie buff, I’m now officially interested in Sleeping Dogs!

    • Aoshi00

It was a bit funny to see Edison Chen’s Dark Knight appearance last only 1 sec though (the security guard asking Morgan Freeman for his cell when entering the bldg), not sure if that had anything to do w/ his sex video scandal at the time.. I’m not that familiar w/ the new HK actors/singers, but I don’t like him :(..  He wasn’t really from HK but from Canada right.. thought he said he quite the entertainment industry, guess it’s temporary like Tiger Woods, waiting for the heat to die down..

Cool they cast so many Asian actors (but Lucy Liu only speaks Mandarin).. Tom Wilkinson & Emma Stone FTW, love her Gwen Stacy, Bryce Howard’s too :).  Can’t wait for this game.

Hee hee. Yeah… But his canto’s passable enough~! I’m sure he’ll do a great job. Especially as some kind of “lang zai”.

        • Aoshi00

Yeah, he sounds enough like a punk :)  I think he sang rap songs too.. he was in the HK Initial D movie or something.. Jay Chou (Green Hornet) spoke pretty funny but decent Cantonese considering he’s from Taiwan.

          • http://chronotwist.deviantart.com/ JustThisOne

LOL! Yes. Jay Chou’s canto is pretty hilarious. I remember watching the Initial D movie and thinking he was oddly silent.

  • Solomon_Kano

Robin Shou and Lucy Liu? Sweeeeeeet.

  • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

    So good.
I don’t know if this is because Square Enix but Deus Ex Human Revolution also had some Chinese voice even though it’s not much but still.
More games should be like this.
    Hype x Infinity!!!

  • Riian

Oh God, I love Emma Stone. My interest in this game has significantly increased based on her appearance alone.

She is perfect, I tell you.

  • komiko12

Whoa! Why did I not check this one earlier?

    Lucy Liu and Emma Stone!

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Emma Stone? Lucy Liu?? Edison Chen???

Lol, the list of VA there is enough to convince me that this game is a must buy lol.^^

  • ddh819

I saw Parry Shen at a Better Luck Tomorrow screening, he was a nice guy, glad to see he’s in this. and Martial Law was a fun series.

  • KOTheWorld

Emma Stone from The Amazing Spider Man, Kelly Hu from Red Alert 3, Edison Chen and his sex scandals, Lucy Liu from Charlie’s Angels…I’m sold!
