Tales of Xillia For West To Have Same Content As Japan, Including DLC

By Ishaan . July 20, 2012 . 12:00pm

Speaking with the PlayStation blog, Tales series producer, Hideo Baba, once again reiterates that he hopes to bring more Tales titles to the west in the future.

“Given the current resources assigned to the Tales of series team, I am always trying to find ways to assign staff members to work on a Western localized title as well as a new game for Japan when possible,” Baba shares.

“However, the team’s main objective is to create new titles for Japan first, and unfortunately staff resources are not always available. Moving forward, I would really like to assemble teams to release as many of the main Tales of games overseas as possible.”

Speaking to Tales of Xillia, Baba says that the game’s new art style is the result of a desire to reach new fans while keeping the old ones around. This carries over to the game’s characters as well. For example, Milla is designed to be a strong female character that women can look up to.

As far as content goes, there will be no differences between the Japanese and overseas versions of Tales of Xillia. This holds true for downloadable content as well.

Tales of Xillia will be released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3.

  • Does that mean we’ll finally get some [email protected] costumes?

    • The [email protected] set and the Star Driver set are the ones I’m looking forward to… in case it is true.

      • Guest

Didnt Graces have Code Geass outfits in Japan? The U.S. didnt get those right?  Or was it this game?

        • Graces f had the Code Geass costumes, but yes we didn’t get it cause of obvious license stuff.

    • keithmaxx

If Baba’s statement is to be taken at face value, then… yes.
I’ll take that with a pinch of salt due to licensing issues, though.

    • LynxAmali

I’d much rather get the games.

  • Whoo hoo! So no one’s getting shafted in anyway. Great news.

  • AoNoise

Well, I wasn’t expecting a director’s cut or anything, so this bodes well.

Maybe it’s just me, but I found the costumes this time around pretty damn awesome; to the point where I don’t feel like changing them (except for Leiah’s, because fudge it…).

So! I’m getting Leiah’s school costume :D and Milla’s because, well… just look at it.
And with the money I’ll save from all the other costumes I have no interest in picking… buy ALL the atachments! :DD

  • ZEROthefirst

Nice, now just give me Innocence R too >:D

    • I believe Baba said in another interview that they don’t have any current plans to localize Innocence R.

      • MrRobbyM

I expected that. I mean Vita sales, not a console Tales game. People couldn’t honestly get their hopes up for Innocence R could they?

        • Tom_Phoenix

Plus, at least there is a fan translation of the original Innocence, so it could be worse.

        • Beyond that, it looks terrible, so I would imagine that factored in as well. It really does look like they took an early PSP game and tossed it onto Vita.

          • MrRobbyM

That too. It looks more like a slightly updated port of a DS game if you ask me.

          • Anime10121

which is exactly what it is, an update of an old DS game that didnt have much substance to begin with, which was why one of the “benefits” of the Vita game was more story.

        • Guest

           Tales of Abyss?

          • MrRobbyM

What about it? It’s a game previously localized to there wouldn’t be much work to do. Besides that and my other reasons I mentioned above, Abyss looks like a much better game.

          • Anime10121

Trust me when I say it most definitely is, Abyss is BY FAR the superior title, which is understandable considering it was originally a console title that much like Xillia, was an anniversary title (celebrating the series 10th anniversary)!  I’ve played Innocence, and it wasnt that great to begin with, though it would be nice to have some incentive to purchase a Vita, I still dont know if ToI would be enough.

  • MrRobbyM

“Baba says that the game’s new art style is the result of a desire to reach new fans while keeping the old ones around. This carries over to the game’s characters as well”
The character designs are nice and dandy but the environments are a bit…meh. Not that I can talk since I haven’t played the game. I’m talking about all the screenshots and trailers released. They’re a bit bland compared to older Tales games, especially Graces. But eh, maybe it’ll be different when I play the game?

Forgot to mention, I’m happy we’ll be getting the DLC as long as it’s not for outrageous prices. I mean, they don’t expect to actually sell much in the west if they price it too high, right?

    • Anime10121

Tales of Graces F costume prices ($4 a costume) say Hi.  Although at this point, I’m just glad to get the game, and I’ll probably buy a few of the high priced DLC just to show support :)

      • MrRobbyM

$4 bucks a set or for one individual costume?

        • Anime10121

          Per individual costume!

          I know, crazy huh.

          • MrRobbyM

Ouch. $4 is kind overpriced for a simple costume. I’m surprised they usually cost more.

          • James Smith

4$ still seems like a lot to me. There’s a whole science to pricing and non scarce, freely distributable bonus features such as costumes have very versatile pricing possibilities.
They could be released on 4$ but reduced to 2$ later, or they could have temporary sales for 1.50$ every now and then.
Research over pricing in steam shows how complicated the subject can be and that creative smart tactics can increase profits by reducing prices temporarily and driving hesitant potential buyers that drastically increase sales volumes.

          • Guest

Check out Namco’s [email protected]’s DLC outfit prices..

          • I think the $4 costumes were the ones that added extra battle tracks (and also character stat buffs). They did just more than make the character look pretty.

  • Tales_of_Master

It’s a good time to be a Tales fan :D But a bad time to be a FF fan :P All in all, good to hear Baba himself stating his desire to bring as much Tales to the west as possible. I think people are really being harsh with Namco, since they’ve been doing a good job of localizing their games as of late. Now I’m only hoping for Innocence R, Project X Zone and JJBA All-Star Battle to be localized. Don’t disappoint me Namco.

  • Anime10121

Good to know we will be getting all the DLC this time!  But then again, this one didnt have anywhere near the amount of licensed costumes as Graces did (Code Geass, Hatsune Miku, Toro,.Hack, Idolmaster, etc.) did it?

  • Guest

I wish he’d finally address the reason we never got Tales of Vesperia for PS3

    • MrRobbyM

Yeah, I know we’re not going to get it, but I’d at least like to know why.

    • LynxAmali

It’s called an exclusive. Not that hard of a concept.

Do people honestly not get that?

Japan Exclusive Laws = / = North American Exclusive Laws.

I’m glad that ScamDai isn’t EA.

      • Guest

Sorry to rain on your parade but a rep at Namco long ago refuted that rumor

        • LynxAmali

What the hell’s that got to do with anything?

So having “Only on Xbox 360” on the cover is a rumor?

Because I’m pretty suuuuree my copy has that exact same wording on it.

          • Guest

umm….no. The issue was there was a rumor that someone reportedly from Namco, once reported to a journalist once that the reason Vesperia PS3 did not come to the U.S./EU was because “it was an XBOX 360 exclusive”. Later, upon hearing of such rumor, Namco made an official announcement that it was not the case.

They are aware that fans want to see Tales of Vesperia PS3 localized, and the uproar created by the rumor stating that Microsoft paid for the Tales of Vesperia exclusivity on X360. They once again deny that exclusivity, stating they asked about every 6 months for Bandai Namco Japan to let them localize, but with no success.

    • Redsumo

It’s been stated before that the reason PS3 Vesperia was not released in the west was because Microsoft paid to keep it exclusive here.

      • LightZero

Um…no. You got your facts twisted thanks to some employee who isn’t even a higher up. They didn’t bring it over simply because Namdai Japan didn’t see it as a good investment. Let be honest here ports always sell worst than the original. This game is a 4 years old port. Not many people in the west like buying the same game twice. Tales already sale like crap in the west with the exception of 3 games which are ironically non-Sony titles. Namdai are better off releasing new games hence why Xillia and Graces got localize instead. If Xillia does well enough in their eyes then Xillia 2 will be next.

Another thing do you honest think MS cares enough for a niche game to pay for exclusivity when there are far more popular games out there?

  • He didn’t mention the possibility of Vesperia PS3 localisation… But nevertheless,  I’m happy to hear this…

Edit: Yes, I know it’s not gonna happen… So stop reminding me already….

    • MrRobbyM

      It’s not going to happen.

      • Yes… that’s a sad fact…

    • malek86

The sooner people stop thinking about it, the better. Let’s just focus on the future now, shall we?

    • Would be nice if Innocence R got localized at the least.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I thought he already a number of times that they had no plan briging that title here?

    • DS23

Vesperia PS3 is NOT happening. Let it go.

      • LustEnvy

PS3 Vesperia Vita port, LET’S GO.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

    Preorder costumes, here I come!

  • A “strong female character” that likes skin-tight tops and short skirts, eh?

Anyway, this is great news, and I’m glad Baba seems to want more Tales games released overseas!

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, all Strong Female Character in Fire Emblem wears “Very” short skirst too there.^^

  • Start saving your pennies! 150 dollars of DLC costumes is headed our way!

    • Triplicity

Came here to say this, heh. Some people think that Graces had a lot of DLC outfits… They just don’t know, man.

    • I am honestly scared for what the next gen is going to offer in terms of pricing for DLC.  This gen is the worst when things like DLC costing more than the game itself are allowed.  Companies like Capcom trying to squeeze as much out of gamers as possible.  I am starting to believe PC gaming is where its at. PC gaming is starting to look cheaper in the long run and the graphics will always be ahead of the coming next-gen consoles.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

Wow, seriously? $150? Maybe I’ll buy a few and wait for some on sale, but damn!

  • James Smith

Nice, and if it includes all costumes then it’s super nice.
Looks like they are trying to bring the fans the best product they can.
We will see if such initiatives pay well in the sales figures. I sure hope they do.

And that last comment is a bit worrying. I’m cool with the art style they tried in Xillia but what kind of changes are they planning in the future? I hope they don’t go too far to get a bigger piece of the market like so many others have done.
Still trying to get over Ninja Gaiden 3.

    • Guest

Xillia 2. Heard of it? Looks good.

  • Nirun Rangraengjit

No difference? So we’ll be getting the Ayumi Hamasaki CD bunny costume for Milla as well as the Star Driver and Idolmaster costumes? I doubt that considering we didn’t get the Idolmaster, Code Geass, Miku, Haseo, and Toro costumes for Graces F.

    • AuraGuyChris

I’m pretty sure they forgot to add one single “but!” in there. D:

  • Boy I’m not holding my breath, but I hope that includes the Star Driver costumes as well!

  • Nicolas Vasquez

i think some people have to realize supporting the game is buying it, buying dlc its support publishers to monetize any possible aspect of the game, sure customes are not a big deal, but are still a good incentive.

    • LynxAmali

       Not really, no.

By buying DLC, you are still supporting the publisher.

And anyway; most of the DLC Xillia got, if I’m not mistaken, was optional costumes and the like so they aren’t really mandatory.

      • Nicolas Vasquez

did you even read my post before your answer? and publishers did just fine before this DLC boom, wich is fueled by people that think they need to buy overprived DLC to show support, if you have the money and want it, i dont have any problem with that, most of us work hard for money so we can expend it in whatever we want, but if you say thats to show support thats just wrong.

        • LynxAmali

From what I understood of your post, I got that you were basically saying that the money the company get’s from DLC doesn’t go to them.

          And geez.

No need to get your panties in a wad over a single post.

        • Lynx did read what you said, it was just pretty poorly written. Even I can’t really understand where you’re coming from on this subject.

  • Alphabet Soup

I am excited to play Milla’s path for just the reason he mentioned.  Tales has churned out some decent female characters, so it’s going to be interesting to see how they handle a “strong” female as a protagonist.  Worst case scenario, she dyes her hair pink and punches Jude.  :) (Kidding, kidding…don’t beat me up, Lightning!)

  • kroufonz

by same content i hope they mean we also get japanese voice, and by All DLC hope it mean stardriver and [email protected] are included!

then again its scamco, why do i keep on dreaming:P

    • MrRobbyM

Could you refrain from calling Bamco any rude names please? I don’t want you to frighten them and risk going back into their cave where localizations have no place in the world.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

        Typical Tales Fans.T_T

    • I don’t understand why people call them “scamco”. Have they actually conned you out of money?

      • Guest

True. Capcom and EA & Activision are indeed worse in that regard… Namco, in regards to Tales & [email protected] DLC, just give you a crapload of content, mostly superficial (so you never feel like you aren’t getting something you paid for (SFXT), but with questionable pricing (Ido[email protected] DLC ranging upwards to over $1000 for everything) that’s not exactly forced onto you anyway…

        • MrRobbyM

Well, for Bamco, it’s like we expect that out of them and most of the DLC is just superficial as you said.

      • LightZero

The Vesperia 360 situation is one example. Some of the content that was in the PS3 version was already on disc and was discovered by hackers. They overpriced their costumes. Hell they even put in less costumes in Xillia just to get a quick buck from gullible fans that was naive enough to support them with the DLC for Vesperia PS3 and Graces F. They know that they could get away with hence less in game costumes. They aren’t as bad as Capcom but they aren’t saints either.

        • That’s very poor reasoning to justify calling them “scamco”.  I’ve bought costume DLC for Graces f not solely because they’re just costumes, but for two reasons: it added more to the game such as character stat boosts and additional battle music, and I’d like to support the Tales series in the west with my money.  Was I scammed?  No, and neither was anyone else that has bought costume DLC.

    • Elemiel

      Never change Tales fanbase. >_>

  • Revorse

I dunno why, but I had thought they would pull an Abyss and give us more. Either way I should just be glad we’re even getting the game. As for localization I still think they could hiring some freelance translators and then buy their work and touch it up. That could save some time cause some fans start translating games the moment they’re out.

    • As I understand it, The extra content we got for Abyss was already on disk but was dummied out for some reason.

    • Blaze Townsend

Here’s one of the reasons they may not like the idea of freelance translators. In the event that a poor release is made, due to poor translation or implementation, the company would face bad publicity if they pointed at singular sources that extend outside of their company and in turn, their control. It is more likely that they would hire a team of their own, to dedicate resources for consistent release, and in fact, some of those people would likely be contractors as stated, but no longer considered “freelance” in nature due to their association. It is better to admit failure, then to point to someone else for said failure. Also having a team of people can help with productivity, and thus cost less for the company. This does not mean that they would not work with someone already in the process of translating script, only that they would not benefit from keeping said person at arms length.

  • Hideo Baba thank you for sparing a thought for those of us who truly love your games and work.

  • Darkrise

Well as long as the school costumes are available then I’m happy. I just hope we don’t have to wait too long for Xillia to be released in NA.

  • As long as a mister “Filthierich” is still at Namco America, I’m pretty sure there will always be difficulty in bringing the Tales games to the U.S. at least.

    • MrRobbyM

What’s his deal? Does he try to burn Tales games when people aren’t looking or something?

      • It just seems like he doesn’t actually care about the Tales series.

        • MrRobbyM

I’m not on twitter all that much but from what I see, you’re right. He’s retweeted a few positive Tales tweets but I don’t even see the Xillia localization announcement. Bah.

          • It’s mostly about Tekken… and last I checked Tekken wasn’t that great of a fighting game to begin with.

          • MrRobbyM

Yup :/ No sight of Xilla announcement yet a link to the new Tekken Tag trailer. I also agree with you. DoA5 looks like a much more fun game :)

          • When was the last you checked, 1998?

          • We all know Virtua Fighter is where it’s at.

          • Nitraion

Gotta agree he is a Tekken maniac lol
            look at tweeter picture….

        • Elemiel

Some guy on the Xillia board posted this: “From the people I
talked to from Namco, nobody wants to deal with the Tales fans on a
community level anymore. I had a representative flat out tell me that
Rich eventually was ditching questions about Tales at E3 because of the
          behavior they have been showing.”

          • Judging from some comment threads I’ve seen here before, I don’t blame him.  Maybe they should hire someone that actually does care about Tales though…

          • Anime10121

But it IS completely understandable though.  Hell I LOVE Tales, but if I had to deal with the whiny and unappreciative fan-base on a day to day basis and still retain my professionalism, I’d probably have to resort to killing kittens every day to retain my sanity.

This fanbase has some of the most unappreciative and disrespectful fans I’ve ever seen, especially considering this is a series that has never done gangbusters in the west (Symphonia was a fluke, it wasnt even THAT good for a Tales game), we should be thankful and appreciate any game that’s localized, yet all they do is complain about not having “dual-audio” or threatening that if a game doesnt have this-or-that, or if their favorite game is localized, they wont support the series anymore.

Yeah, I dont think I’d wanna deal with this fanbase either.

          • SirTeffy

A community manager is supposed to build the communities for franchises, build hype, and yes, deal with the whiny, entitled members of the community. That’s not to say he can’t VENT about them, but still, he refuses to do his job, which is build brand recognition for ALL of Namco Bandai’s family of games. THIS INCLUDES TALES. And the Bandai-property Warriors games, which he ALSO ignores.

Hearing that he literally refused to speak about the Tales series at E3 makes me wonder why he hasn’t been fired from his position yet, he’s quite honestly the worst CM I’ve dealt with, worse even than Seth Killian.

        • I’m grateful to have Hollie handling the announcements here, but I can definitely understand why Rich’s acting like that. For a “fan”base that speaks loud, they sure make a lot of empty promises. Maybe wise up a bit and we’ll see an attitude change.

    • Go2hell66

what does fithierich do at namco, i thought he was just involved with tekken side of thing 0_-

      • I think he’s supposed to be a PR guy.

        • SirTeffy

“Supposed” to be is right – he gave nearly NO coverage to Graces, and then mentioned there was a Tales announcement coming this week… and failed to make any further announcements. Not even a linkback to HollieB’s announcement (The Namco PR rep in Europe, who IS a tales fan).

Essentially he ONLY covers the fighter franchises for Namco, constantly tweeting about Soul Calibur up through Graces’s launch, and Tekken Tag 2 instead of Xillia’s announcement.

          • Yeah see, he needs to not be their PR guy anymore.

  • Luna Kazemaru

Yeah we get everything that japanese version go but lets complain about the dlc the very things we ask for!! My god you all will never be happy i wounder why they are even taking the time to even release the games in the west again if its not going to be cryin about something

    • MrRobbyM

If you;re referring to my comment, I wasn’t complaining as much as I was saying that I hope the outrageous prices don’t get localized *ba-dum tsssh*

      • Luna Kazemaru

Not your comment the other comments i noticed

        • Steven Lamphere

I think the main reason there are complaints (though not for this games explicitly) is that with Graces F we did not get all of the DLC, which is odd since all DLC is actually already on the disc that download is just the code which unlocks it on the physical disc. I admit I was a little angry over the fact that they did not bring over the Haseo costume (as I love .dotHack) nor the Code Geass which was actually known and somewhat popular in the west. Idol Masters I understand more since the west would have no idea what they are but the fact remains the information was already on the disc and you are buying costumes anyhow; why wouldn’t you release all of it? It would only give the fans another chance to buy more for the game they like to play.

Okay rant over and all, that I believe is one of the problems, the other is price. I am one of the few who could care less that it is $4 a costume. Tales of isn’t Final Fantasy, they don’t have an established profit in the west. They need every bit of profit that they can get so I don’t mind spending the money on the game. Then again people are complaining because they don’t realize that if Namco doesn’t get a good enough profit from localization sells they won’t release over here. Which brings me to my earlier point, if monetary gain is the prime objective and the information is already on the disc then you should not take it out just because you are sending it somewhere else. If it has to deal with another anime/game and it is already in the game, then trademarking is not the issue at hand.

          O-O I wrote too much…. ^-^;

  • Yes!

  • Enigma_XIV

Yay I really wanted the Tales and Star Driver Costumes! :D

  • MrJechgo

New art style to please new fans ? O…k…

Still look the same to me: same designs for the same 2 artists, same eyes, same look, same everything. The only thing new is the graphics that are smoother and next-gen.

I do praise that Xillia added a female protagonist equally as important as Jude. If they really want to knock the ball outta the park though, I’d like to get a main Tales game with a main female character only, as in no choice; this new female leand will become as important as Cless, Lloyd, Yuri, Luke and such. I have nothing against Milla, because splitting the importance in half kinda ruins the impact a bit.

In short, give me an equivalent of Terra or Lightning for the Tales series. Milla doesn’t count, because she actually share the main role with Jude. I’m talking about a single lead character that would be a lady.

    • Milla is every bit as important as Luke and Yuri, in terms of role. Yes, Milla and Jude are sharing the main character slot, but they are actually sharing the Main Male Character and Main Female Character spot because if you play the game, you know who is the mama of the two. The direction, the goal and the drive of the plot is primarily guided by Milla, with Jude contributing.

      • MrJechgo

Well, that begs the questions why wasn’t Milla made the sole main character, instead of having her share the spotlight with Jude ? Would have fans showed reserve to play as a woman most of the time, as players tend to use the main character for most of the game ? Is there some kind of mysogyny amongst Tales fans about having a female main character ?

I’m just saying that for a main character, she gets 50% for the glory because the other half is going to Jude. Personally, after hearing and reading reviews, why wouldn’t I want to pick Milla as my character, if Jude’s almost a bystander ? (Personal reason: I’d play Jude to being with, and then Milla on a new game+ after buying stuff at the Grade Shop, because spellcasters can be a pain to play on a frist playthrough.)

As for the “main female character spot”, that kinda never happened in a Tales game, because they were mostly overshadowed by the main male characters:

Phantasia: Mint ? Nope, Cless gets the glory.
Destiny: Rutee ? Nuh-uh, Stahn stands in.
Eternia: Farah ? No, Reid gets it.
Destiny 2: Reala ? No, but you wished… after seeing Kyle’s “resolve”.
Symphonia: Colette ? Nada, Lloyd is the hero here.
Rebirth: Claire ? No, she’s not even playable and Veigue does all the work.
Legendia: Chloe ? Not much, Senel leads the way.
Abyss: Tear ? Nope, Luke gets the focus here.
Tempest: Rubia ? No, this is mostly about Caius.
Innocence: Illia ? Nuh-uh, Ruca is the hero here.
Vesperia: Estelle ? No… do I really need to explain about Yuri’s case here ?
Hearts: Kohak/Amber ? Not much, because Shing does it all.
Graces: Sophie ? Kinda of hard to decide, because she is, but Asbel takes matters into his own hands.
Xillia: Milla ? YES, A THOUSAND TIMES YES ! But why isn’t SHE the main character ? I mean, there’s little difference between one side or the other, so they could have just made the player starts as Milla and stick with her the whole time.

On a sidenote, the whole “different experience” with 2 PCs is just poorly executed in Xillia. We’re talking about like 25% of the game that is different for each character. In a REAL game with such a feature, one can expect a good 60 if not 85% of character-specific content. To me, that’s one more reason to question why Milla isn’t the sole main character, and that’s why I’m asking for a Tales game with just one main character that would be a female.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Because their main focus here is to create new experience using two MC rather than female MC?

        • Astrid Huang

They already explained before that they want 2 main characters for Xillia to celebrate the 15th anniversary.

Though you can tell even by the screenshot above that Milla is the leading character. Jude is only following her everywhere.

    • Ladius

I think the differences in terms of character design are immediately apparent if you compare even a single in game screenshot from Graces f to Xillia’s ones. Not saying that Graces f is bad in terms of art direction (I loved it), but there’s a reason if the fanbase has been debating this change in art direction since Xillia’s announcement.

    • LightZero

Technically wasn’t even the MC in FFXIII. The story revolved around Vanille and Fang. In FFVI there was an ensemble cast. You could argue that Terra was the MC in the WoB, but Celes was most certainly the MC in the WoR.

I actually like that there is a choice. It allows those who prefer to play as a boy or girl to have their options. Even then Millia is more of a leader than Jude. She is more of a MC than this child.

    • But Lightning is a terrible character.

  • Niermyico

    *dances* Star Driver! Lets gooo!!

  • PoweredByHentai

The Star Driver costume shall be mine!

    • xXDGFXx

Millia in a school uniform <3

  • Andar

I’m sold. Day 1 preorder for me. Not that there was any doubt, really.

If they actually sell the costumes in packs for a reasonable price like any typical developer would, they might sell some. But if it’s four dollars per costume again… count me out.

    • heartless141

which typical developer are you talking about?

      • SBKJAZZ

As much as a ripoff as they are, even Capcom’s packs of five character costumes for six bucks are a much better deal than four dollars for a single costume.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, while i agree 4 dollar is hell expensives, you should also know that this case is different as many of the game costume is taken from other anime and some of them is not even released outside Japan.

That could make the license to be more pricey there and in the end, Bamco will need to price the DLC more expensive

  • animeftw999

its not gonna be sold in bundle packs
    Idol-masters costumes :3

  • As much of a ripoff the costumes are I’m just glad we’re getting it at all.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, it is not ripoff there lol. Considering the game experience would not decrease at all even without the costume there and you are given choice to buy them or not.

      • I’m playing Symphonia right now and all the costumes are right there on the disc, blatant money grab that desperate fans will fall for which will make them do it again and again.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

But that time, they never really put a lot focus such as anime costumes there like this one.

And they also gives you certain costumes inside the game there. It is just some extra costumes will need to be bought by you there.

        • raymk

At that time things didn’t cost that much either and we weren’t in a recession as big as now.  Vesperia had more in game costumes than symphonia yet they still made more down the line and had 2 costume sets on disk that were dlc.

    • Ladius

I really don’t get the issue with Tales costumes, frankly. Tales was one of the few jrpg series with multiple in game costumes to begin with, and that isn’t going to change considering Tales of Xillia’s in game costumes and especially its attachments (in that regard, Xillia has far more customization options than previous games).

Compared to other series that use dlcs not only for aesthetic, harmless contents like costumes (think about additional characters, events, dungeons or endings), Tales is still one of the best, not to mention Tales games are so packed in terms of contents that you will get your money’s worth even if you completely ignore dlcs.

      • LightZero

Xillia has less costumes than some of the previous localize Tales games. The game only has 3 costumes. Vesperia had a lot of costume in-game plus DLC. Graces F had less costumes but at least every character got one or two different outfits. This isn’t the case with Xillia. Namdai saw that they could get away with DLC thanks to Vesperia PS3 and Graces F so they put in less costume in order to get people money. If it was any other series I wouldn’t care that much but this is a blatant attempt to swindle more money from people by Namdai. The costume aren’t even cheap at that.

        • Arrei

Don’t be so quick to judge them – remember that they had to cut out two certain planned side events – a spa area and a throwback fun area. Sounds like prime candidates for costume events that were unfortunately cut out along with the areas themselves, don’t they?

Xillia 2 will be the decider, I think. If there once again are very few costumes, then we definitely have Namco exploiting fans for DLC money, and I personally will not be a happy camper, since having costumes is something we expect. If there are costume events again, on the other hand, then either Xillia 1’s costumes were a result of time constraints after all or they listened to fan criticism.

(Also it’s four costumes, not three)

          • Ladius

It should be noted that Innocence R came out after Xillia, and has a good number of in-game costumes.

Also, Namco would be “exploiting” fans if they added dlcs characters, events, endings and made you pay more for important gameplaynarrative elements, costumes are completely unnecessary aesthetic extras that were almost a Tales exclusive in the jrpg genre in the first place.

          • Arrei

Good point on Innocence R, but I must disagree on costumes being “completely unnecessary”. Costumes have always been rewards for sidequests and mini-games, which means more content, and their inclusion has come to be expected as part of the Tales package, as part of the reason fans love the series.

        • Ladius

Xillia has more customization attachments than the rest of the series and four in game costumes, in fact you could end up having far more dress-up options for your Xillia characters than in other Tales games despite the lower number of costumes.

Also, dlc costumes are the absolute norm this gen, and there are games with costume menus that are used only with dlc without a single in game costume to speak of… attacking Tales is rather silly when Namco is using dlcs in the most harmless way possible compared to the rest of the industry.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Man, everytime i went into Tales thread here, there will always be people complaining here.T_T

Can people just be happy here hat at least we are going to get this game and costumes’s DLC? And This game never forced you guys to buy the DLC too so it should not be a problem at all.

  • Go2hell66

Those star driver costumes are mine!

    • Solomon_Kano

It has Star Driver costumes!? Now I’m even excited for the DLC lol.

  • I love default costume for every game, I didn’t even change clothes in Resonance of Fate.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, it is kinda unfair comparing to RoF here lol. Considering RoF defult costume is on entirely different level.

    • Nitraion

I guess i like RoF barbie change lol

  • Nitraion

Hmm word “SAME” in dictionary okay?
    I little disappointed ToG:F don’t get HAseo,Idol master and Miku costume….

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, lets hope this time, “Same” is indeed the same here there.^^

  • Zoozbuh

This might be the first Tales game that I really get into.. For some reason I haven’t really been a fan of the series, but idk- this one might convert me? I’ve heard from people who imported it that it’s a LOT better than Graces F…

    • Ladius

They’re very different games, but don’t dismiss Graces f just because Xillia has been announced – it’s a fantastic game with one of the best action battle systems ever conceived, a likeable cast and tons of contents to keep you playing for 120+ hours. Easily the best traditional jrpg localized on PS3 so far, imho.

    • LightZero

Actually most people who imported prefer Graces F over Xillia especially since it has more content and it’s a longer game.

  • Freud_Hater

Oh, certainly, Milla is a very strong female protagonist… But she dresses up like a whore.

Not that I have an actual problem with that, it’s just that… well, it’s harder to see her as a ‘strong’ character when prostitutes wear more clothes than she does.

Glad to see DLC’s coming to our continent again =D

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Lol, many female characters wear worse than her there lol. Remember Tifa from FF7?^^

      • LightZero

Not really. You don’t see Tifa wearing just a bra (I wish) and a mini-skirt. She’s well covered. Millia dressed like a hooker. That was the first thing I notice last year. She even has hooker boots. What Tifa wear is acceptable if you were to go out with her. Millia on the other hand would attract the wrong attention.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

From the two images i don’t see what you just mention there though.

Both wears mini skirt for sure. Wearing just bra? Does Millia did there in the artwork there???

And since when boots had so called Hooker boots there? If some female use the boots there, they are hooker??? Not to mention, at least Millia boots there cover her some of her thighs there compared to Tifa who shows everything there.

Pliz, both of them are the more less the same here. If you said you can accept Tifa outfit, please at be fair here considering, Tifa there had almost the exact same style there. Even both of them there shows their belly button.

          • Nitraion

            Both are hooker
            *smoke cigarate*
Lolz just stop this hooker bussiness i think he just your usual not satisfied tales fan

        • Ladius

Sorry, but a comparison between the two characters’ official artworks shows they are almost exactly the same in terms of clothing.

Also, I think the whole “she would attract the wrong attention” thing is rather appalling even in real life (a girl should be able to dress as she sees fit without be considered responsbile for some males’ misguided reactions and without be compared to a whorehookeretc), let alone in the context of an anime-style fictional character living in a fantasy world.

      • Mike Pureka

While it’s true that many female characters dress worse, it doesn’t mean she couldn’t dress BETTER.  Let’s face it – it’s a ridiculous outfit to think about going into a swordfight in.  Also, she looks totally awesome in her Stahn costume.

I’m sure I’ll like her, but the outfit is kinda offputting.  Not in a “she’s obviously a slut” sort of way (WTF, people) but in an “Oh god, clearly designed for fanservice” sort of way.

        • Anime10121

I always love it when the females are the only ones people mention that wear “unsuitable” clothes for fighting.  Squall (and his fashionable attire) Luke fon Fabre (with his perfectly exposed gut), Tidus (exposing everything but his gut and his arms), and Nathan Drake (with his perfectly half tucked shirts) all say hi.  They may wear small peices of armor, but nowhere near the amount that would be “suitable” for combat.

Females are not the only video game characters that wear “unfit” clothing for their situations.  There are plenty of male characters who are designed to look the artist’s interpretation of “good”.  They are FICTIONAL fantasy characters, the women aren’t going to be raped for looking “fanservicy” or like “whores” (as some put it), just like the men arent going to be stabbed or shot in the many shirt/armorless parts on their bodies.

In short, they are not real, so why should the artist be forced to limit themselves to what would be “funtional” in the real world, instead of simply what they themselves want to design.  These are fictional worlds that dont have to limit themselves to what “works in reality.

          • Mike Pureka

I’m not asking for everyone to armor up, but all of those outfits are at least outfits you can move around in without fear of indecent exposure.  I appreciate it when ALL my characters look like they are wearing something that could function in and it annoys me when they don’t.   I don’t care if they want to show off their abs, or wear something with no back in it, because, when you get right down to it, it’s CLOTHES, not armor (Bikini armor, or the Prince Medion Exposed Sternum Special is another issue), but really. A miniskirt? For serious?

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well if this, i can accept here but well, Tales girl one way or another has always been fanservice character here. Whats wrong with that lol.^^

I mean almost all jrpg especially Fire Emblem there, the girls never wear a real battle clothes there.

    • Nitraion

Lol ditto straight to the point… XD
you just like hubert comment about cheria clothes

    • Ladius

Nothing against you, but I think that devaluing a female character’s potential strength and comparing her to a whore as soon as she isn’t dressed like a nun or a business woman is far more sexist than any skimpy outfit developers could invent to pander their audience (not that Mira’s clothes are particularly problematic – she is dressed almost the same as Tifa, if not more).

    • Kevi Johnson-el

      she dress anime to me

    • Astrid Huang

I can assure you she doesn’t act like a whore. In fact, far from that.

  • Damn, I already bought all the costumes for the Japanese version….now I gotta buy them AGAIN.

  • Ladius

After Graces f’s awesomeness I’m ready to see the evolution brought to the series by Xillia, I’m really happy that they are still localizing new games despite Graces’ disappointing sales.

  • Solomon_Kano

Cool. I still need to hop on Graces, so I’ll definitely have something to keep me busy until this comes out. I’m really glad to see Namco continuing to support the series in the west despite sales not being terrific.

  • Astrid Huang

I was hoping that Xillia english would be just like Abyss english (Abyss english got a few additional contents).

I was hoping at least there would be 1-2 additional costumes for each characters just like graces F, and also cameo battle at arena.. then I would have absolutely no complaints.

Either way, I’m still grateful they decided to localize. So, whatever happens I’m still going to buy Xillia. Now I’m praying for decent voice acting for Xillia, just like what they did with Vesperia and Graces F!

    • Natat

Yeah, but I think it’s a bit different, maybe? I mean IIRC Abyss’ new artes were in the japanese disc too, but weren’t finished so to speak, so they finished them and put them in the English game. However new costumes or cameo battle would be completely new things, so I doubt Bamco would add them in the NA disc.
I won’t lie though, I would totally love a cameo battle in Xillia…
