New Super Mario Bros. 2 Was Almost Called “New Super Mario Bros. Gold”

By Ishaan . July 27, 2012 . 10:00am

Before Nintendo decided on the title of New Super Mario Bros. 2, they were considering calling it something elseNew Super Mario Gold. This idea was considered for two reasons, the first being that the game’s focus is on collecting as many gold coins as possible. It has up to 1 million coins to collect.

The other reason was that the development team for 2 felt immensely pressured by the release of Super Mario 3D Land, developed by a different group, which has a lot of elements from classic Mario games in it as well. The development team for New Super Mario Bros. 2 weren’t sure they’d be able to deliver on a “classic” Mario game that would be able to outdo 3D Land.

Ultimately, the game was decided to be worthy of a “2” in the title once the team felt they’d reached the quality bar they were aiming for, and managed to include more stages than in New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be released on August 19th in North America.

Should have been called Wario Land 3DS or Wario World 3DS. Mario is nowhere near as obsessed with gold as Wario is.

And a shame he is probably not unlockable.

Gold would probably be more fitting than anything else, given how in love with the colour the game is, though I guess 2 is simpler.

Two New Super Mario Bros. games within months of each other, I wonder how that will turn out? They’re on different platforms, at least, that’ll certainly help, but I’m not sure if I’m going to get both.

A portable SP experience, and an experience to be shared with 3-4 other people will be enough for me to get both. :)  (Fortunately months will be enough of a buffer between both games)

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

They should have just called it “Super Mario Gold” imo and marketed on the collecting of the coins while giving us the side scrolling experience instead the sequel move.

I personally love 3D land and not a die hard fan of the “new Super Mario Bros” – to me it is turnoff.

To be completely honest, i think they are starting to become CoD in terms if releases. A few weks ago i remember someone at Nintendo saying that “gamers ask for too much.” However thats not entirely true. Yes some gamers are greedy little pricks. However we have been asking for a new StarFox and/or F-Zero. Not ANOTHER Mario platformer. Im not saying the games are low quality or anything, but its starting to become a little much. Arent we getting 3 new Mario games this year alone? With 2 of them being from the same series? :

1 is a pseudo-3D Mario, 1 is a (mostly) SP experience, the other is a multiplayer 4-player experience as well as an SP experience.  Those are 3 entirely different ways to play, compared to CoD’s gameplay.  Nintendo is no Activision.

I said i meant in terms of the amount of releases. I never said the quality of the games is kept the same. Mario DOES improve itself with every new title. But honestly i’d prefer a new StarFox or F-Zero…

We also got a new game from a series that has been dead for 20 years so Nintendo does listen to fans.

You have to remember the Mario-verse massively varies from game to game. They put Mario on a lot of titles, as his name is practically synonymous with Nintendo by now, but what we call a “Mario game” could be a classic side-scrolling platformer, or a side-scroller with greatly different mechanics like Yoshi’s Island, or a wacky sports spin-off, or a racing game, or a 3D platformer, or an RPG, and more.

I don’t love the New Super Mario Bros. series as much as the 3D games, but it’s also important to keep in mind the New series itself was a return to classic 2D gameplay after many years of not making any.

I don’t know. Considering 2D Mario fans had to wait 14 YEARS for both a new console and handheld entry, I don’t think they’ve exactly been spoiled in terms of number of releases.

    • LittleMofreaky

Every NSMB game is totally different from the last. You’re seriously complaining that Nintendo is giving you too much Mario.

      • https://www.facebook.com/mike.degroodt Mike de Groodt

you can never have enough mario :P

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

Its actually more frequent than that. CoD comes out with a game every November and although annoying and I don’t like those games. Now we are getting 2 to 3 Mario games every year if this keeps up :/

New Super Mario Bros is trial and error to me.  NSMB DS was bland to
me.  Wii I loved, nothing too different from the DS game but the level
design and powerups were more fun.  NSMB2 I think will be fun I
certainly like the collection goal and I love that Mario can actually
    fly unlike Mario 3D Land’s version…

Hopefully Nintendo finally captures the spirit of the classics without
trying too hard to regurgitate the staples and gameplay.  Mario is on
top of the genre food chain, they need to shake things up.  Hopefully
    NSMB2 and U does that.

  • Archenyte

It’s good to hear that they’re adding more stages than the last 2 NSMBs.

  • Jirin

I thought the coin thing was just a challenge run, collecting tons of coins is actually a major feature of the main gameplay?

I wouldn’t worry too much about competing with Super Mario 3d Land.  The controls are clunkier than any other Mario game, the depth perception is iffy even with the 3d, and the challenge levels are all half assed rehashes of earlier levels.

  • LittleMofreaky

that name would have been waaaaay too long

    • http://ggftw.com/forum/ Monkey_T

Compared to other Japanese titles, not really.

      • LittleMofreaky

It’s still not a good name.

        • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

I like more words rather than more numbers but, thats just me.

          • LittleMofreaky

            yuck

      • komiko12

Well, they could put in many words since they can be written in just a few kanji.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

“More Stages” Thats all i need to here.^_^ My main concern with all Mario game is that they are kinda too short for me here.T_T I completed 3D Land twice for 5 stars(Miss my shiny because wanted to try the new White Tanuki Suit.T_T) and shiny 5 stars in only 30+ hours there.

If they can make this game much longer, i would surely get this game Day one lol.^_^
