BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Introduces The Overdrive System, Other Changes

By Ishaan . August 6, 2012 . 10:00am

Arc System Works have begun releasing more information on BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, which they announced this past weekend at their BlueFes 2012 event. As previously reported, Chrono Phantasma will have three new characters, new moves for the game’s returning characters, and new costumes as well. You can watch a trailer for it here.

Among the changes to this new revision is something called the Overdrive system. The Overdrive system replaces Gold Bursts, and grants character-specific benefits. Overdrives are activated by pressing all four attack buttons at once. A list of Overdrive effects for the various characters can be found on

Additionally, Arc System Works have also released a PDF file with an extensive list of move and system changes that have been implemented in BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma. You can download this here (in Japanese) and find details translated by fans—take with a grain of salt—in Shoryuken’s report. New moves in the PDF are marked in pink, while changed moves are in blue.

Keep in mind that the build of Chrono Phantasma these are from isn’t final. Location testing for the game began in Japan today, and BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma is planned for an arcade release in Japan this winter.

    Persona 4 Arena tomorrow…

    • Luna Kazemaru

And that has to do with BB?

      • It’s also a fighting game. It’s also made by Arc System works. It has blazblue reference palettes for all the characters.

Yeah, you’re right. That guy is an idiot. P4A has absolutely no relevance to blazblue.

        • Luna Kazemaru

Lol someones mad? All I did was ask him why is he posting that here when he could just post it in OT. Try harder next time ok.

          • I’m pretty sure you’re the upset one. Somebody was simply stating that they were excited for a game that is made by the same people, is the same genre, references the game series that is the subject of this post, also uses hand-drawn sprites, is a 4 button fighter, and I could go on.
They’re super similar and you were just being a bitch to that guy because you probably like blazblue and don’t care about persona. That’s fine. You can still respect people though.

          • Luna Kazemaru

No I’m into P4:A aswell I still find it funny you are saying I’m upset when you are the one who came at me upset lol. Refer to my last comment anyway GG.

        • Fidelis

It really doesn’t besides a shared genre and dev studio and if you’re using sarcasm, that’s not as much in common as you make it out to be.

          • “It really doesn’t except for the reasons you just listed”

Your argument is “Yeah it has things in common but not enough to impress me”

          • Fidelis

More like “Yeah they have things in common, but they aren’t the same thing”

P4A has similarities to BB but that doesn’t mean that P4A’s release has anything to do with details of a BB sequel.

Tota’s post was irrelevant to the article, and Luna pointed it out. There is no issue here.
Also, on the topic of “respect”, the snark in your initial response to Luna far outweighed Luna’s…nonexistant snark.

    Noel <3

  • MrKappa

Probably would of been more on topic of the picture was of one of the in game screens showing the new burst icon rather than Noel…

Sad thing is though we won’t see a videos because they have prohibited people from taking them…

    • Luna Kazemaru

unless they somehow get the split second of it from the PV…

      • MrKappa

I derped on my entire post but for that last part I meant to say that people at the location test have already reported that they can’t take pictures or videos.

    • cj_iwakura

People will still be getting videos, make no mistake.

  • andref

Wait isn’t that system from guilty gear though it was only used for their instant kill attacks but those were taken out for the last release. Wonder if it will work the same way and missing will lose the ability to use special attacks

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    I want guilty gear back!!!!!!!!

    •  Just wait…its not like they threw it away (especially since they got it back) stop whining and enjoy what you got

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        Sol-badguy does not approve

    • MrJechgo

Toshimichi Mori said in an interview that he’d like to work on a new Guilty Gear title, hopefully with Daisuke Ishiwatari, after he’s done with BlazBlue… which I hope that this game is the last one, before I think that the story could wrap it up nicely with just one more game (this game) instead of two.

Oh, he also said taht he’d like to make a Guilty Gear vs BlazBlue game at some point, which would be AWESOME !

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        Now that would be awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Luna Kazemaru

Oh great we got spam bots

  • “As previously reported, Chrono Phantasma will have three new characters, new moves for the game’s returning characters, and new costumes as well.”

Costumes?! why does everyone keep using the plural for this, only Noel is different and people wanna say OH tsubaki is different…its just a color palette.
But yeah interested to see how this works with BlazBlue and other new stuff

    •  LOL Arcsys better get to the point before people start arguing about why or why not new costume should even be here.

      Oh wait…

    • Luna Kazemaru

I’m starting to think they may change down the line so i guess thats why?

    • cj_iwakura

Tsubaki has new moves too, and she has her evil look, which is awesome. I main her, so bonus.

      •  yeah everyone has new moves and stuff (and also being a Tsubaki Player 8D) but i mean visually, she’s not really different , just black which you could easily put her in the other games though i think her hair is pink with it >.> <.<

      • Tsubaki players unite? =D

But like Wayne said, she just has a color palette. Nothing to signify her change. At least give her a mask since she can’t “see.”

    • Go2hell66

Just speculation here but i think v13 and mu 12 will come back with new costumes, guess we”ll have to wait and see

      • Rishtopher

Dunno about Mu, since Noel is back to being Noel. But Nu maybe. She rebuilt herself at the end.

        • I think Mu will come back as the Imperator(if they let her fight in this games console version) that way they’d keep mu’s fighting style.

as for why I said Imperator, it just seems like the only way I can see her fighting and since shes this immensly powerful being and one of the main antagonists she should fight(make a good boss battle)

EDIT:Just so you understand I mean The Iperator adopts Mu’s style of fighting, nothing else(except maybe final boss of this game)Diden’t know if I explained that well so I just wanted to clarify
this is only a theory(not even that, just slight hope)

          • Rishtopher

Personally, I’d like the Imperator to play differently, but the idea of her being a new Mu is really cool too. I’m really hoping the new Nu/Mu will get different outfits since they both technically died. Also Noel gets a new one, so why not them? Or Jin for that matter, seeing as he’s not in the NOL anymore.

      • True i heard about that, kinda interested on how she will look if any different
Edit: Friend thinks it might be the “thing” at the end of the trailer because of what Hazama said…sadface >w>

  • SRK:

Amane’s drive attacks turn his cloth into a drill, into which he can use to attack his opponent.

I can see the AmaneXIku Nagae crossover fanart happening right now!

    • Solomon_Kano

My first thought was Rose from SF.

  • The Overdrive system, eh? That’s a nice way of shaking things up. I’d like to see how it all works out with the already established drive abilities.

  • Tee Niitris

“The Overdrive system replaces Gold Bursts, and grants character-specific benefits.”

You see, this is why I can’t get into BlazBlue on a serious level; it seems like nobody plays by the same rules. I understand making characters unique, but come on. :(

Anyway, I hope ArcSys isn’t finished revamping the sprites. Noel’s new sprite-set looks good; I’d love to see her older one return as an alternate. I’d also love to see some of the other characters have these small sprite changes too.

    • XiaomuArisu

       Ryu,Evil Ryu,Ken,Dan,Sakura,Gouken,(shin)Akuma,Oni
8 characters who play almost the same. And people complain about unique playstiles.XD
BTW I like SF but when they showed us Evil Ryu and Oni in the arcade edition I wasnt impressed.

      • Tee Niitris

I wasn’t impressed either, but that’s not what I meant.

I meant that their nuances (like Tager being unable to dash, although that one is understandable). Then there’s exclusive gauges for some characters and other stuff (I don’t know that much so don’t take it too seriously), it just seems overwhelming. But I’m sure it’s not as complicated as it appears.

        • Rishtopher

You can just take your time to learn a character. That’s kinda the point and main draw of BB. There’s other games if it’s not your thing though. I think KOF is good for having a lot of characters handle the same, but still be unique? I’m not sure though, I’ve never played KOF.

        • XiaomuArisu

You could test every character till you find one you like.
Or like Rishtopher said try other games Tekken,Persona,DOA,Kof,Skullgirls etc.The fighting genre is exploding!KOF and SKullgirls have demos so you could try them out…if you want so many games so little time…

    • 猫 黒

So you want a fighting game where you have one character reskinned 50 times?  I’m not really a fighting game person, but I think having 12 characters who are all truly unique and fully fleshed out would be a lot better.

      • Tee Niitris

I guess I didn’t explain myself well enough. I meant that… the characters already have different weapons, with different powers, giving them different move properties, allowing for very different playstlyes, which is all good. Giving them different attributes for a universal gameplay mechanic seemed a tad bit excessive to me.

Maybe it sounded like I was complaining; I appreciate the lengths ArcSys goes to make there characters as different as possible. I’m all for varied characters but that thought gave me a “too much of a good thing” reaction.

  • …Oh lord, my nose! Quick, someone help me stop the blood!

Seriously though, I couldn’t be more exited for this. Arc Systems has always made fighting games that are incredibly fun even for people like me, who don’t like competitive gaming, because they pack in so much single-player content.

  • AceWildCard

haven’t been on siliconera for awhile then I hear this <3

  • Solomon_Kano

This is sounding effing great. Can’t wait to play it. Well, P4A should be good in the meanwhile.

  • Wagnaria

  • Vadim Merzhey

    Noel started looking somewhat naked.

  • I hope there is a Vita port of it
