Watch Pokémon Black & White 2’s Animated Intro In English

By Ishaan . August 8, 2012 . 5:58pm

Remember the awesome Pokémon Black/White 2 anime opening video that we saw a few months ago? Nintendo shared the English-dubbed version of it today. Take a look at the video below:

Pokémon Black/White 2 will be released for the Nintendo DS on October 7th in North America and on October 12th in Europe. Alongside it, Nintendo will release Pokémon Dream Radar for the 3DS, and will follow with Pokédex 3D Pro a month later. See this post for details of those games.

I don’t remember the girl protag sequence in the video released before…

    •  I’m pretty sure it was released a few days, if not on the day of the release of the games, but she was included in the trailer.
Might’ve been the actual commercial release.

  • yoUNg_grOUp568

I thought the rival was going to pop into super saiyan when he said, “I’m going to unleash my rage”

    btw the dub is terrible.

    • LynxAmali

It’s a Pokemon USA dub most likely. Don’t be surprised.

Still stand by my opinion that the 4Kids dub(when they had it) was better.

      • $733987

Do you mean the original dubs? The ones with the Brock that could actually sing, but sang badly on purpose. If so, then I agree.

        • LynxAmali

Yeah. The dub that was going on from the start up until the end of Hoenn but before the Battle Frontier. Y’know, the one with Veronica Taylor.

          This dub – (See Link)

          • andref

Are you referring to the moment before Ash’s voice actor changed in the dub because after that happened I stopped watching it

          • LynxAmali

I’ve tried but I can’t get into it now.
Half the voices just.. are meh. (Though I do like TR’s new VA’s and the supporting cast.) Having Ash with a VA that’s not Veronica Taylor’s just weird though.

          • miju

Thanks it’s not like I was planning on being happy tonight anyway.

          • LynxAmali

Twas the only scene I could find.
            S-Sorry? ;_;

  • Archenyte

The voices are pretty good. I don’t remember the female MC being in the video though.

    • MrRobbyM

I thought the voices were pretty terrible, but I expected that. It’s Pokemon anime.

  • SirRichard

Once more with feeling: why isn’t the actual show like this? I would seriously start watching again if it was like this.

Also a little thing; I’m honestly preferring the Pokémon not saying their own names and just growling/roaring/squawking/what have you instead, it just sounds less…silly, I suppose. Would make an exception for Pikachu, at least.

    • $733987

I totally disagree. If the actual show becomes something like this after 15 years, I would call it a sellout. Those who want a darker show, watch digimon.

Ditto for the voice of the Pokemon, i.e not calling out their own names. No offense to you, of course. :D I understand why people would want changes. But that kind of change is as bad as the Teenage Alien Ninja Turtles, to me anyway. Besides, the ongoing Pokemon Best Wishes TV series is no longer a mindless kid show with no sub plot, even though the main plot is still Ash fighting gyms. Team Rocket are no longer just used for silly gags. Try reading some summaries and see if you like it.

tl;dr The show has become more plot-oriented, but remains fun with lots of rival guest-stars.

      • andref

I agree randomly watching an episode and seeing jessie and james actually carrying out a robbery with precision and skill without alerting alarms and guards is so wrong but it felt like I was seeing totally different people like we first saw them in the original series so long ago before they became idiotic, pikachu obsessed thieves.

        • $733987

Best Wishes doesn’t have team rocket in every episodes anymore. They only get a few minutes of screen time every few episodes where they set up for the larger over-arcing plot. And when the episode features them, they are anything but silly. No more “team rocket blasting off again”. Things have changed a lot for them ever since Giovanni’s return. Please at least watch one of team rocket arc from Best Wishes. Might I recommend episode 59-60, “Stopping the Rage of Legends”. Watch it in subs if you must, which is how I watch it.

      • LynxAmali

I’d say the battle scenes in the anime need more work.

The reason I don’t watch it that much anymore is because it’s gotten tedious. Some of the filler is good. I was a huge fan of the Pokemon Ranger episodes and the Chronicles episodes but the battles really do need more work put in. The only decent ones are the gym’s or the mass battle/ tournament episodes.

        • $733987

Best Wishes has more tournaments where the main characters goes up against their rivals. Each of the 3 main characters have at least 1 rival, and rival guest stars are pretty common. I guess that kind of change is good. Also, you have to watch that episode where Ash went up against Roxie for his 8th gym badge from a month ago. That whole battle was a treat to watch. Roxie allowed Ash to battle her 3 pokemons with his 6 pokemons, and Roxie K.O all his pokemon except one. Not to mention she uses Koffing. Sweetness. :p

      •  Because the series is stale and the story on the Pokemon Special Manga and Black/White is pretty good.  Its not like pokemon being a bit dark like those would be a sellout, noone would be surprised.  They don’t have to change pokemon though, they could just do a Pokemon Special Animated Series and Everyone wins

        • $733987

The annual movie should quench your thirst for something akin to the Pokemon Special. I would love a pokemon special anime series too (especially since I have all the books up till Platinum arc on my shelf), but not at the cost of losing the main character every season. Remember how many people “voiced their disagreement” when Brock was removed from Best Wishes? In my opinion, the best arcs were the Yellow arc and the Fire Red/Leaf Green arc. Lots of guest stars that I’m familiar with.

The reason all pokemon anime must be canon to the tv series is because if you have two different series, you will split your audience. Both series will compete with each other and everyone lose. It’s the same reason as to why they cancel a perfectly good Avengers series so that they can start a new Movieverse Avengers series, or why there can never be a Doctor Who movie with a new Doctor and reboot storyline that’s not the same as the tv series. And why cancel the current series? It’s good enough right now. Just because the target audience from 15 years ago, i.e you and me, grew up, doesn’t mean the show has to change to suit our new taste. The target audience is still there.

    • You should try the Pokemon Special manga.

      • OatMatadoQuatro

I agree with Gren. Even the creator of Pokemon favorited Pokemon Special as the best adaptation of the game series. The story is well carried and it is even violent. (Trainers are beaten up in battles, Pokemon die, etc)

    • Renaldi Saputra

one sentence: pokemon anime sucks alot.. (not mentioning the movies)

      simple as that

  • MrRobbyM

  • Leanaa

I feel like the voices don’t match with the characters. It seems odd.

    • AuraGuyChris

      You’re not the only one.

BTW, the rival was apparently voiced by Sean Schemmel(?).

  • I thought the dub was pretty decent, excluding that scientist dude’s impressive voice. He’s freakin’ Crispin Freeman, so he doesn’t count, lol

The Mei sequence was a nice add-in, as well.

    • Corless? He was better than Mei and Bianca. BLEH

    • Curan_Altea

Crispin Freeman has done some pretty good dub work. Have you never played the .hack//games?

      • AuraGuyChris

Well, I know he’s the former FRICKIN’ BADASS OVERLORD.

      • I meant excluding as in, he’s a well known va. I probably worded it wrong. I fixed it.

  • The only bad line, imo. LOL

  • Spirit Macardi

    Crispin Freeman! :D

Though darn, they dubbed something Poke’Mon related and didn’t include Dan Green? That’s just about inexcusable.

Well, at least the dub was pretty good. While I can’t say for sure, I think the main male trainer was voiced by Spike Spencer. Certainly sounds a bit like his Shinji voice.

  • kelsniff

funimation please dont touch pokemon again. the dub is already horrible

    • ParaChomp

It wasn’t Funimation, it was Pokemon USA, the same team the currently dubs the anime (atrociously).

      • hawk222

I think a Funimation-produced Pokemon anime could actually be really good!

        • Spirit Macardi

I want Ash voiced by Colleen Clinkenbeard :D

    • Spirit Macardi

If you’re going to trash a dubbing company, at least get the one you’re trashing right.

      • kelsniff

You know what even if it isnt Funimation those are their voice actors. All I’m saying is in comparison to the japanese one its horrible.

        • Spirit Macardi

Umm, most of Funimation’s VAs live in Texas. This was an LA dub (obvious since Crispin Freeman is in it), and the only Funi actors who live there are Vic Mignogna, Todd Haberkorn, and Travis Willingham, none of whom are in this.

          • Actually this is a New York dub, you can tell from lisa ortiz being involved. Crispin Freeman used to do work with them in the 90s so they probably phoned him in.

  • Zetsomaru

N’s voice sounded WAAY better in my head.

  • I will catch them all…..again! =P

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

N…..voice sounds so wrong here lol. Maybe i am just spoiled so much by Hiroshi Kamiya here.^_^

  • Xapth

I might be in the minority here but watching this just reminds me how I’m so sick of Ash and his eternally youthful 10-year-old self!

I don’t know if it’s the high quality animation or just the change of faces, but I can’t help wishing the show was like this. Although, I liked the show during the first few seasons.

On another note, I totally imagined Cheren with a voice like Negi from Naruto / Hubert from Tales of Graces (Steve Staley).

    •  Actually ur not, most people would rather have the series like this or the manga…Ash was fine in the beginning but he’s over stayed his welcome

  • zferolie

You know, I love pokemon and all… but if the games ACTUALLY played like this opening…. they would be the best games ever.

  • What am i Striving for!!!!4!!!

  • I would be so hyped for this game if i had never learned that Red(along with many other people) can only have pokemon up to level 50.

Didn’t play black and white 1 won’t play 2.The way they named it reminded me of that second game with lightning anyway and that rubs me the wrong way…

    Iris is cute though!

  • Hoshi星

Most badass line ever. You know what I’m talking about

  • XypherCode

They should really officially release Mei’s version of the trailer. I heard they were giving that short away at a retailer in japan.

    • agumike (けんじ)

       They did re-release the trailer.

      • XypherCode

        really? where? :))

        • agumike (けんじ)

Sadly, i could never find it on youtube, but i found it on Nico, so cant really help there, sorry :x

  • Why is it that N sounded like old-school James to me?

  • rinalicat

I really enjoyed this! My only criticisms were I disliked Hugh and N’s voices; they kinda…bugged me. Hugh’s voice sounded too deep for him (a guy voicing him is great BUT I think Hugh needs to have a higher pitched voice) and was I the only one who heard a hint of an accent with N’s voice? Again, it’s fine BUT I’d prefer it a bit stronger…maybe a different actor?

Ah! I DUNNO WHO TO PICK AS MY STARTER! I could go with Tepig again (I WOULD CALL HIM “BACON 2”!) but I’m really tempted to choose Snivy just to go against my usual starters (I’m either water or fire). AAAAAAH! I HATE DECISIONS!!

  • Internet is Crash

It was a bad decision for me to transfer all my 4th gens to my Black

  • RaikageV

    Black Hyperbeam, huh?

And the dub was actually good, I don’t get you people.

    • Renaldi Saputra

in japan it’s named somehting like hakai blahblahblah.. which could mean… destroying laser ray

      • RaikageV

Posting a translation would have made sense if it had something like kuro(i) in it’s name but it hasn’t.
Hyperbeams were always white/yellow/orange. Imo black just doesn’t fit. It makes it seem more like it was a darkness type attack.

        • hawk222

I agree! I was wondering why their Hyper Beams were black/purple. Despite the fact that it looked cool, I was expecting and still expect golden beams from Hyper Beams.

  • Abhishek Posooa

I think I’ll never like english voices :S
Japanese ones are much more, how can I say, kind of natural.

    • Krisi92

That’s probably because you have no idea about what natural Japanese speech is like.

      • Ha-ha! I watch mostly subbed anime so I’m use to Japanese voices, but if something is available in English that’s the version I go for. It’s so much easier to enjoy something when you don’t have to read subtitles.

        • Krisi92

Yeah, but then again, that’s just “acted” Japanese as well, so you wouldn’t know what natural Japanese is like. :)

      •  In this case, it’s actually probably because the Japanese version of this trailer used all very talented and famous voice actors. Where as the English version is a much more shoddy job. Also, anything that is dubbed over the original is bound sound less natural, regardless of the language.

        • Tien Ron

Japanese people dont sound like that in japan, even more those voice tend to be very over the top

  • Loukas Stamatakis

anyone here thinks that protect was overused in this trailer?

  • Loukas Stamatakis

anyone else thinks that protect was overused in this trailer?

  • Go2hell66

when the hell did pokemon become so badass?

    • I’m thinking the exact same thing, I don’t know how many people are in my situation, but I dropped off from Pokemon after the first season of the anime, and the release of the original gameboy games (Red and Blue version).  So it’s really shocking to see how different the franchise has changed.

It looks good though, it has sort of a naruto-vibe going for it.

      • Anime10121

Do not be fooled, this is only a 6-minute “ova” they put together for the releases of Black/White version 2.  While this does indeed look awesome, the original show is nowhere near this.  While I admit I was a fan of the anime for far longer (watched all the way to the infamous voice changes), but after Johto is when I pretty much stopped caring.  I loved the original trio (Ash, Misty, and Brock) but the story was already starting to show signs of stagnation.

While it started out as a show with characters that grew each episode, had signs of love interest (major chemistry between Ash and Misty), a lot of forshadowing about Giovanni and Team rocket, and a clear goal in sight, it basically became essentially a reboot with each games release, Ash would basically “forget” all of the training Pikachu got and he would be weak as crap at the start of each season, getting whooped by weak wild pokemon.

I’ve watched some of the eps of Black and White and it seems to be the same thing, just more of the same.  The show never grew up with it’s audience, and it’s simply become a marketing tool aimed to get people to buy the games, toys, accessories, etc.

How I would LOVE for this to be an actual show and for the Pokemon Company to FINALLY change up the formula a bit, I think it would be too good to be true after all this time :(

        • Well that’s… deceiving, thanks for the heads up, I might still check out the manga that people below us are talking about.

  • Somazu

Pokémon: Now with Goku(sean schemmel) as everyone

  • AdventureTimeFinn

Where is Porygon? With that warning in the beginning I was expecting him to show.
Jokes aside one of the best Pokemon trailers. I wish the anime was this good.

  • tha_Chiller

Why isn’t this the cartoon instead u_u? Ash could go die for all I care

  • Levin_Scorpius

Why can’t this replace the show? It actually has what looks like good production values! That and Ash and all his terrible in-competencies is no where in sight.

Cheren’s voice though doesn’t really feel right for him though, Elesa’s sounds a bit off as well, and the translation definitely could use some work (some of the lines are worded awkwardly).

  • RaikageV

I just checked the Japanese version and I was right: this version IS longer than the “original”. The scene with the girl fighting wasn’t in there.

  • Just Tim

Out of amusement, I foresee this intro vid  into getting an abridged treatment.

  • KnightBlazer

Pokemon is getting cereal all of a sudden o.O

    Also Corless.

  • protofox

    • Just Tim

Well duh, the ongoing pattern on the main game timeline-based regional tournaments:

Gen I: Kanto: Sweet 16 (Once)
Gen II & III: Johto & Hoenn: Elite 8 (Twice)
Gen IV: Sinnoh: Final 4 (1st time)

With this given pattern in the show, Ash will reach the Final Four 2 more times in Gen. V & VI.

  • this needs to be a thing it would redem the pokemon show
