Sleeping Dogs Outsells New Super Mario Bros. 2 At U.K. Launch

By Ishaan . August 20, 2012 . 9:16am

Square Enix/United Front’s Hong Kong crime drama, Sleeping Dogs, and Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros. 2 were both released on the same day in Europe—August 17th.

While New Super Mario Bros. 2 opened at the #2 spot on the weekly U.K. games charts provided by Chart Track, the game’s first week sales at retail were actually beaten by Sleeping Dogs, which managed to grab the #1 spot.

Of course, it needs to be noted that Sleeping Dogs is a multi-platform game available on three different platforms (PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3), while New Super Mario Bros. 2 is only available on the Nintendo 3DS.

Regardless, that’s a nice piece of news to hear about a new I.P. like Sleeping Dogs, which was cancelled under its original publisher, Activision, back when the game was titled True Crime: Hong Kong. Following its cancellation, Square Enix picked the game up, and allowed developer, United Front Games, to complete development.

I was going to pass on this game until I saw the Shenmue parody. I really couldn’t help but agree that this game is probably the closest that we can get to a Shenmue sequel.

“Do you know someone who speaks Chinese?”
      “I found a mirror”
      “I’m looking for a job”

and the Dreamcast QTE prompts, priceless :)  Yeah, this is as close as it gets for a Shenmue 3.. brought back memories, the epic music.. I love how Ryo Hazuki kicks someone’s ass while being so polite :) (actually he sounds more like a boy scout in the Eng dub)

Hooray for Sleeping Dogs.  The research really pays off, and cool live action promo too.. If Sega nor Yu Suzuki want to conclude the epic Shenmue story, let United Front handle it..

Wait, what?  Similar (in any sense) to Shenmue and I’ve been ignoring it?!  Crap. >_<  Okay, just need to rebudget for a while; I don't need THAT many meals a day…

        • Aoshi00

Well, Shenmue 2 did have Ryo fighting hoodlums in Hong Kong :)  This is kinda like a grittier ver.. but this parody is gold :)  This might drop soon though if it’s like Deus Ex, so if you’re not in that much a hurry to play, could wait a little or until black friday, my backlog is huge *.*..

i’m glad I was a part of getting sleeping dogs to that number 1 spot this week xD. in all honesty I’m glad Mario didn’t take number 1 spot. it definitely makes a change for once xD don’t get me wrong I love the Mario games but they’re not exactly stretching the 3DS limits with the games. Super Mario 3D land, was pretty bad imo. levels were easy, the pace you ran at was so slow and if you did manage to do bad you got a power up that lasted the whole level and it made you invincible to damage. I just hope the devs get more creative with the Mario series. it seems like they’re just going for sequels now (Mario galaxy 2, NSM2, the Wii U one looks nothing more than a sequel to the wii one) whilst I do like the nostalgic aspect of the ’2D’ ones, the level designs always felt very basic just with pretty backgrounds.

onto sleeping dogs though, at first I felt it wasn’t anything special combat wise, it felt repetitive…I had already assumed it was gonna be like a GTA type game, where the  story is sub-par. the graphics were okay, blocky here and there but it had some really nice visual effects, and plus I don’t really give much of a damn about graphics as long as the game plays fine then i’m happy. anyway, then I started to realise, it’s not meant to be a game all about just fighting and what not. The story got extremely interesting and sucked me in. I was definitely impressed with the story, a couple times I was in suspense wondering what was gonna happen next. with the various types of story missions it also kept the gameplay fresh and creative imo. even now I’m still happy slamming someone’s head in a car door. whether their innocent or not, wait what?

My god this game is so good I love it!

Activision way to drop the ball :Kappa:

Good to see a new IP outselling Super Mario Rehash.

The problem is that this always happens, ask me in about 3 months and we’ll see where those two are at.

If history shows anything, the results are likely to be very different.

NSMB2 is… a lot more fun than I expected.  I kinda feel like the weird marketing focus on “there’s LOTS OF COINS” gives the wrong impression.  Game is still some of the most rock solid level design around, maybe the best of the three NSMB games.  It’s not really a new formula, but it’s still a very well made game.

Sleeping Dogs is pretty damn good too though.  I can be happy that both are selling well, no need to choose one or the other.  Only bad thing that this string of good releases all in such a short time (P4 Arena, Sleeping Dogs, Darksiders 2, NSMB2, Dust: An Elysian Tale) is making it hard for me to play them all as much as I’d like!

Haha, oh wow, the Square Enix exec who first brought up the idea of buying the game must be feeling pretty smug right about now, and I’m sure United Front are stoked that their second chance paid off!

Square Enix Europe have really been at the top of their game with these collaborative projects these last few years. Batman: Arkham Asylum, Just Cause, Sleeping Dogs, Heroes of Ruin.

(Last one isn’t great from what I can tell, but it certainly was ambitious.)

  • enorka miho

Lol.. Thats what I call in your face! But who can blame activision? All they really want is the blockbuster FPS game… Truth be told their creativity got killed by COD a very long time ago.. Oh well, who cares aye?!

This is exciting.  Makes me happy.

I love sleeping dogs so far. I’m glad that it is doing well. I love the radio stations :)

    Lets put this in perspective.

New super mario bros 2 sold more.

If you compare it averaging out the platforms

    its not even close

The difference is, NSMB2 will still be in the top 20 next year.

  • Solomon_Kano

Multiplatform or no, it outsold a Mario game. That’s nice for most games, so it’s incredible for a project that nearly bit the dust.

    Activision… lol.

  • Iris Miracle

    It’s a great game, try it. :D
